Test of lepton flavor universality in semileptonic 𝐵$^+_𝑐$ meson decays in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV

A measurement of the ratio of branching fractions 𝑅⁢(𝐽/𝜓) =ℬ⁡(𝐵$^+_𝑐$ →𝐽/𝜓⁢𝜏 + ⁢𝜈 𝜏 )/ℬ⁡(𝐵$^+_𝑐$ →𝐽/𝜓⁢𝜇 + ⁢𝜈 𝜇 ) in the 𝐽/𝜓 →𝜇 + ⁢𝜇 − , 𝜏 + →𝜇 + ⁢𝜈 𝜇 ⁢$\bar{𝜈}$ 𝜏 decay channel is presented. This measurement uses a sample of proton-proton collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the CMS experiment in 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 59.7 fb −1 . The measured ratio, 𝑅⁢(𝐽/𝜓) = 0.1⁢7$^{+0.18}_{−0.17}⁢$(stat)$^{+0.21}_{−0.22⁢}$(syst)$^{+0.19}_{−0.18}$⁢(theo) =0.17 ± 0.33, agrees with the value of 0.2582 ± 0.0038 predicted by the standard model, which assumes lepton flavor universality. By testing lepton flavor universality, this measurement is a probe of new physics using 𝐵$^+_𝑐$ mesons, which are currently only produced at the LHC.

Factorization at subleading power and endpoint-divergent convolutions in h → γγ decay

t is by now well known that, at subleading power in scale ratios, factorization theorems for high-energy cross sections and decay amplitudes contain endpoint-divergent convolution integrals. The presence of endpoint divergences hints at a violation of simple scale separation. At the technical level, they indicate an unexpected failure of dimensional regularization and the $\overline{MS}$ subtraction scheme. In this work, we start a detailed discussion of factorization at subleading power within the framework of soft-collinear effective theory. As a concrete example, we factorize the decay amplitude for the radiative Higgs-boson decay h → γγ mediated by a b-quark loop, for which endpoint-divergent convolution integrals require both dimensional and rapidity regulators. We derive a factorization theorem for the decay amplitude in terms of bare Wilson coefficients and operator matrix elements. We show that endpoint divergences caused by rapidity divergences cancel to all orders of perturbation theory, while endpoint divergences that are regularized dimensionally can be removed by rearranging the terms in the factorization theorem. We use our result to resum the leading double-logarithmic corrections of order $α^n_sln^{2n+2}(-M^2_h/m^2_b)$ to the decay amplitude to all orders of perturbation theory.

Kink-antikink scattering in a quantum vacuum

We study kink-antikink scattering in the sine-Gordon model in the presence of interactions with an additional scalar field, ψ, that is in its quantum vacuum. In contrast to the classical scattering, now there is quantum radiation of ψ quanta and the kink-antikink may form bound states that resemble breathers of the sine-Gordon model. We quantify the rate of radiation and map the parameters for which bound states are formed. Even these bound states radiate and decay, and eventually there is a transition into long-lived oscillons.

Electronic spectroscopy and ionization potentials for YbOH and YbOCH 3

The polyatomic molecules YbOH and YbOCH 3 have been recognized as being of potential value for spectroscopic experiments that explore charge-parity and time reversal symmetry violation effects. These measurements require very high precision, which, in turn, will necessitate that the molecules be manipulated at ultra-cold temperatures. Both YbOH and YbOCH 3 have electronic transitions that appear suitable for laser cooling ($\tilde{A}$ 2 Π 1/2 -$\tilde{X}$ 2 Σ + and $\tilde{A}$2E 1/2 -$\tilde{X}$ 2 A 1 , respectively) but the currently available spectroscopic data is not sufficient to determine the extent to which population leaks may compromise the optical cooling processes. A further complication is that the quantum states of interest for these measurements will need to be selectively populated. The $\tilde{A}$-$\tilde{X}$ band systems of both YbOH and YbOCH 3 show evidence of vibronic perturbations, such that there are unassigned vibronic features at energies that are just above the origin bands. Here, in the present study we have recorded spectra for the $\tilde{A}$ 2 Π 1/2 -$\tilde{X}$ 2 Σ + transition of jet-cooled YbOD to facilitate the vibronic assignments. In addition, spectra for the $\tilde{B}$ 2 Σ + - $\tilde{X}$ 2 Σ + transition of YbOH were recorded, establishing the origin band at 20473.8 cm -1 . Previously, the reaction of Yb with CH 3 OH has been used to generate gas-phase YbOCH 3 . As this reaction also yields YbOH, there have been complications in spectroscopic studies of YbOCH 3 due to overlap of the $\tilde{A} -\tilde{X}$ band systems. To identify specific regions of overlap, resonantly enhanced two-photon ionization spectra were recorded using mass-resolved detection of the YbOH + and YbOCH 3 + ions. These data confirmed the overlap of vibronic bands near 17640 and 17680 cm -1 . Two-photon ionization spectroscopy also provided accurate ionization energies of IE(YbOH)=45788(10) and IE(YbOCH 3 )=45283(10) cm -1 . The IE for YbOH is relevant to problems encountered in previous attempts to determine the bond dissociation energy of YbOH + .

φ meson production in ρ + Al, ρ + Au, d + Au , and 3 He + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV

We report small nuclear collisions are mainly sensitive to cold-nuclear-matter effects; however, the collective behavior observed in these collisions shows a hint of hot-nuclear-matter effects. The identified-particle spectra, especially the φ mesons which contain strange and antistrange quarks and have a relatively small hadronic-interaction cross section, are a good tool to study these effects. The PHENIX experiment has measured φ mesons in a specific set of small collision systems p+Al, p+Au, and 3 He+Au, as well as d+Au at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=200 GeV. The transverse-momentum spectra and nuclear-modification factors are presented and compared to theoretical-model predictions. The comparisons with different calculations suggest that quark-gluon plasma may be formed in these small collision systems at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=200 GeV. However, the volume and the lifetime of the produced medium may be insufficient for observing strangeness-enhancement and jet-quenching effects. The comparison with calculations suggests that the main production mechanisms of φ mesons at midrapidity may be different in p+Al versus p/d/ 3 He+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=200 GeV. While thermal quark recombination seems to dominate in p/d/ 3 He+Au collisions, fragmentation seems to be the main production mechanism in p+Al collisions.
