Optoelectronic signal processing for phased-array antennas; Proceedings of the Meeting, Los Angeles, CA, Jan. 12, 13, 1988

Papers are presented on fiber optic links for airborne satellite applications, optoelectronic techniques for broadband switching, and GaAs circuits for a monolithic optical controller. Other topics include the optical processing of covariance matrices for adaptive processors, an optical linear heterodyne matrix-vector processor, and an EHF fiber optic-based array. An adaptive optical signal processing architecture using a signed-digit number system is considered along with microwave fiber optic links for phased arrays.

High speed all optical networks

An inherent problem of conventional point-to-point wide area network (WAN) architectures is that they cannot translate optical transmission bandwidth into comparable user available throughput due to the limiting electronic processing speed of the switching nodes. The first solution to wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) based WAN networks that overcomes this limitation is presented. The proposed Lightnet architecture takes into account the idiosyncrasies of WDM switching/transmission leading to an efficient and pragmatic solution. The Lightnet architecture trades the ample WDM bandwidth for a reduction in the number of processing stages and a simplification of each switching stage, leading to drastically increased effective network throughputs. The principle of the Lightnet architecture is the construction and use of virtual topology networks, embedded in the original network in the wavelength domain. For this construction Lightnets utilize the new concept of lightpaths which constitute the links of the virtual topology. Lightpaths are all-optical, multihop, paths in the network that allow data to be switched through intermediate nodes using high throughput passive optical switches. The use of the virtual topologies and the associated switching design introduce a number of new ideas, which are discussed in detail.

Nonlinear optical properties of organic materials: A theoretical study

Replacement of electronic switching circuits in computing and telecommunication systems with purely optical devices offers the potential for extremely high throughput and compact information processing systems. The potential application of organic materials containing molecules with large nonresonant nonlinear effects in this area have triggered intensive research during the last decade. Interest on this area was due to two facts: (1) that many organic materials show nonlinearities that are orders of magnitude larger than those of conventional inorganic materials such as lithium niobate and potassium dihydrogen phosphate; and (2) that organic materials show much flexibility in terms of molecular designs. Some of the desirable characteristics that these materials should have are that they be transparent to the frequency of the incident laser and its second or third harmonic, that they have a high damage threshold, and, in the case of second-order effects, that their crystal structure or molecular orientation be accentric. Since polymeric assemblages can enhance the nonlinear response of organic molecules severalfold, efforts have been directed toward the synthesis of thin films with interpenetrating lattices of electroactive molecules. The goal of this theoretical investigation is to predict the magnitude of the molecular polarizabilities of organic molecules that could be incorporated into films. These calculations are intended to become a powerful tool to assist material scientists in screening for the best candidates for optical applications. The procedure that was developed for the present calculations is based on the static-field approach, and is a modification to the method developed by Dewar and Stewart, 1984 for calculating molecular linear polarizabilities.

Optically induced bistable states in metal/tunnel-oxide/semiconductor /MTOS/ junctions

A new switching phenomenon in metal-oxide semiconductor tunnel junction has been discovered. With a sufficiently large negative bias applied to the electrode, incident visible light of intensity greater than about 1 microW/sq cm causes the reverse-biased junction to switch from a low-current to a high-current state. It is believed that hot-electron-induced impact ionization provides the positive feedback necessary for switching, and causes the junction to remain in its high-current state after the optical excitation is removed. The junction may be switched back to the low-current state electrically. The basic junction characteristics have been measured, and a simple model for the switching phenomenon has been developed.

Generation of nanosecond THz pulses using a high gain ring resonator with a semiconductor switch

A 250 GHz quasi-optical ring resonator consisting of an input coupler and three mirrors has been designed and tested. A low-loss silicon wafer in the ring provides output coupling of the stored power when irradiated by a pulse from a 532 nm laser. The ring created 5.8 ns, 268 mW output power pulses when excited by a 17 mW, 250 GHz continuously operating input source, achieving a power gain of 16. In a fully tuned ring, higher gain is achievable. If the ring was used with a pulsed input source having a pulse length of several times the fill time, the ring could be used as an efficient pulse compressor with similar high gain. The resonator has a wide range of applications, including, at low power, spectroscopy and, at high power, testing of accelerator structures and materials.

Topological steering of light by nematic vortices and analogy to cosmic strings

Liquid crystals are widely known for their technological uses in displays, electro-optics, photonics and nonlinear optics, but these applications typically rely on defining and switching non-topological spatial patterns of the optical axis. Here, we demonstrate how a liquid crystal’s optical axis patterns with singular vortex lines can robustly steer beams of light. External stimuli, including an electric field and light itself, allow us to reconfigure these unusual light–matter interactions. Here, periodic arrays of vortices obtained by photo-patterning enable the vortex-mediated fission of optical solitons, yielding their lightning-like propagation patterns. Predesigned patterns and spatial trajectories of vortex lines in high-birefringence liquid crystals can steer light into closed loops or even knots. Our vortex lattices might find technological uses in beam steering, telecommunications, virtual reality implementations and anticounterfeiting, as well as possibly offering a model system for probing the interaction of light with defects, including the theoretically predicted, imagination-capturing light-steering action of cosmic strings, elusive defects in cosmology.

This document is a collection of technical reports on research conducted by the participants in the 1993 NASA/ASEE Summer Faculty Fellowship Program at KSC. The basic common objectives of the Program are: to further the professional knowledge of qualified engineering and science faculty members; to stimulate an exchange of ideas between participants and NASA; to enrich and refresh the research and teaching activities of participants' institutions; and to contribute to the research objectives of the NASA centers. 1993 topics include wide band fiber optic communications, a prototype expert/information system for examining environmental risks of KSC activities, alternatives to premise wiring using ATM and microcellular technologies, rack insertion end effector (RIEE) automation, FTIR quantification of industrial hydraulic fluids in perchloroethylene, switch configuration for migration to optical fiber network, and more.

Optical conversion method

An optical pickup comprising an electrooptical device located between two crossed polarizing devices all positioned along a common optical axis is described for switching a TV system between a color mode and a black and white mode. Embodiments in which the electrooptical system is used as a neutral density filter, a selective color filter, or a light shutter as applied to a television camera are described. Where the optical system is used as a selective color filter to produce light beams of alternating color in a field sequential color television system, deactivation of the optical system renders the television a black and white system.

Electro-optic network analyzer

The bandwidth of frequency domain measurement methods of electrical signals has usually been far greater than the bandwidth of time domain methods. The primary limits of the time domain approach have been the 20 to 30 GHz bandwidth limit for electronic waveform acquisition instrumentation, and the lack of usable electrical pulse generators for excitation of a test device. The bandwidth of frequency domain network analysis appears to have reached a plateau of between 100 to 200 GHz, while time domain measurement have improved markedly in both bandwidth and sensitivity with the introduction of the pulsed laser based electro-optic sampling approach. Network analysis or the measurement of device scattering parameters provides information necessary to the design of electronic network such as high frequency amplifiers, mixers, and phase shifter. The bandwidth of frequency domain network analysis is currently being exceeded by the next generations of high frequency transistors and devices. Thus the electro-optic approach is a natural means of extending network analysis into the range above 100 GHz by employing time domain methods. In this approach, a suitable electrical excitation pulse is generated and propagated along a transmission line toward a test device. In the picosecond domain, laser driven photoconductive switches provide a unique method of generating electrical transients. Several materials were studied for generating short electrical pulses using photoconductive switches. The various semiconductive materials tested for photoconductive switching, and the electro-optic measurement technique used to characterize the material performance are described.

Toward lower-diameter large-scale HPC and data center networks with co-packaged optics

We investigate the advantages of using co-packaged optics for building low-diameter, large-scale high-performance computing (HPC) and data center networks. The increased escape bandwidth offered by co-packaged optics can enable high-radix switch implementations of more than 150 switch ports, which can be combined with data rates of up to 400 Gb/s per port. From the network architecture perspective, the key benefits of using co-packaged optics in future fat-tree networks include (a) the ability to implement large-scale topologies of > <#comment/> 11 , 000 end points by eliminating the need for a third switching layer and (b) the ability to provide up to 4 × <#comment/> higher bisection bandwidth compared to existing solutions, reducing at the same time the number of required switch application-specific integrated circuits by > <#comment/> 80 % <#comment/> . From the network operation perspective, both reduced energy consumption and lower packet delays can be achieved since fewer hops are required; i.e., packets need to traverse fewer serializer/deserializer lanes and fewer switch buffers, which reduces the probability of contending with other packets and improves the tolerance of network congestion. The performance of the proposed architecture is evaluated via discrete-event simulations for a wide range of representative HPC synthetic-traffic cases that include both hotspot and non-hotspot scenarios. The simulation results suggest that co-packaged optics form a promising solution to keep up with bandwidth scaling in future networks, while the reduced number of switching layers can lead to significant mean packet delay improvements that start from 30% and reach up to 74% for high-load conditions.

Integration of Ultrawide Bandgap Photoconducting Semiconductor Switches into High-Voltage, High-Current Pulser Systems

In this feasibility study we will evaluate the viability of integrating ultrawide bandgap (UWBG) photoconducting semiconductor switches (PCSS) in high-voltage pulser systems capable of driving low-impedance dynamic loads critical for next-generation accelerator and RF-source applications. The project consisted of developing modelling tools that would inform design of UWBG PCSS packages that could be mounted onto conventional circuit boards. Specifically, we are interested in evaluating the following through simulation software: (1) resistance to electrical breakdown (2) proximity effects due to high-frequency skin effect (3) transient behavior from switching (4) effective transmission of RF signals (5) thermal dynamics of the switch under operation (6) sensitivity to inhomogeneities in optical excitation of the material (7) cross-talk effects from parallel switching structures, and (8) susceptibility of system to damaged components. The project resulted in the development of a special-purpose circuit code that implements photoconductivity physics. This code was used to evaluate objectives 1-6 above, identifying a critical requirement associated with the need for fine control of dopant concentrations in the UWBG material to reach an optimal solution for voltage standoff and laser light responsivity requirements. In addition, we identified that the temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity of this material was typically not well-measured and developed a platform for measuring both the “dark” and “illuminated” conductivity on real physical switches in the lab to better inform our models.

Enhancing the dark-state bistability and thermal stability of zinc dynamic windows with nitrile electrolytes

Reversible metal electrodeposition (RME) for dynamic windows is a promising alternative to traditional electrochromics. We explore the reasons behind the bistability of practical RME dynamic windows under a wide temperature range, i.e., how well they maintain their dark state without external power. While Zn dynamic windows with dimethyl sulfoxide electrolytes exhibit adequate bistability at room temperature, their performance degrades at elevated temperatures due to the presence of small amounts of water. Here, to overcome this problem, we developed a set of Zn nitrile electrolytes. The integrated devices can maintain dark-state bistability over at least 1 month at 85°C with 0.1% transmission using a propionitrile (PrCN) electrolyte. Additionally, the PrCN-based Zn dynamic windows possess high optical contrast, color-neutral switching, and promising cyclability, making Zn RME in nitrile electrolytes a promising solution for achieving robust dynamic windows.

Photostability of Ambient-Processed, Conjugated Polymer Electrochromic Devices Encapsulated by Bioderived Barrier Films

Polymer-based electrochromic devices (ECDs) are a promising technology for enabling low-voltage, disposable displays, yet are currently limited by photo-oxidative bleaching of the active materials. Here, renewable barrier films composed of cellulose and chitin are presented as an alternative to poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) for encapsulating ECDs. To assess barrier film effectiveness, lateral ECDs composed of poly(3,4-propylenedioxythiophene-(CH 2 OEtHx) 2 ) (P(ProDOT)) active layers were constructed and encapsulated with a multilayer barrier consisting of chitin nanofibers and cellulose nanocrystals spray cast onto a cellulose acetate substrate (oxygen transmission rate (OTR) = 29 cm 3 m –2 day –1 ), a commercially available PET film (OTR = 8.5 cm 3 m –2 day –1 ), and a high-performance PET-Al 2 O 3 multilayer barrier film (OTR < 1 cm 3 m –2 day –1 ). The photodegradation of the P(ProDOT) active layer was determined by measuring the evolution of the colorimetric contrast (ΔE*) and switching speeds as a function of light exposure (100 mW cm –2 , AM 1.5 G light). Photodegradation was found to proceed at a similar rate for all encapsulated devices (roughly 10 times more slowly than unencapsulated devices), highlighting the opportunity for replacing petroleum packaging with bioderived barrier films. Analysis of the switching kinetics, the shifts in optical absorbance, and evidence of chemical degradation indicate that both photochemical breakdown of the electrolyte and cross-linking of the P(ProDOT) active material are key drivers for loss of device performance when oxygen flux to the active material is limited. Furthermore, pathways toward better understanding photodegradation are then proposed with sustainability in mind for future ECD design.

Direct time integration of Maxwell's equations in nonlinear dispersive media for propagation and scattering of femtosecond electromagnetic solitons

The initial results for femtosecond electromagnetic soliton propagation and collision obtained from first principles, i.e., by a direct time integration of Maxwell's equations are reported. The time integration efficiently implements linear and nonlinear convolutions for the electric polarization and can take into account such quantum effects as Kerr and Raman interactions. The present approach is robust and should permit the modeling of 2D and 3D optical soliton propagation, scattering, and switching from the full-vector Maxwell's equations.
