Nonlinear pattern analysis of ventricular premature beats by mutual information

The frequency of ventricular premature beats (VPBs) has been related to the risk of mortality. However, little is known about the temporal pattern of occurrence of VPBs and its relationship to autonomic activity. Hence, we applied a general correlation measure, mutual information, to quantify how VPBs are generated over time. We also used mutual information to determine the correlation between VPB production and heart rate in order to evaluate effects of autonomic activity on VPB production. We examined twenty subjects with more than 3000 VPBs/day and simulated random time series of VPB occurrence. We found that mutual information values could be used to characterize quantitatively the temporal patterns of VPB generation. Our data suggest that VPB production is not random and VPBs generated with a higher value of mutual information may be more greatly affected by autonomic activity.

Solution and sensitivity analysis of nonlinear equations using a hypercomplex-variable Newton-Raphson method

Here, the classical Newton-Raphson (NR) method for solving nonlinear equations is enhanced in two ways through the use of hypercomplex variables and algebra. In particular, i) the Jacobian is computed in a highly accurate and automated way, and ii) the derivative of the solution to the nonlinear equations is computed with respect to any parameter contained within the system of equations. These advances provide two significant enhancements in that it is straightforward to provide an accurate Jacobian and to construct a reduced order model (ROM) of arbitrary order with respect to any parameter of the system. The ROM can then be used to approximate the solution for other parameter values without requiring additional solutions of the nonlinear equations. Several case studies are presented including 1D and 2D academic examples with fully functioning Python code provided. Additionally, a case of study of the catenary of an elastic cable subject to its own weight and a vertical point load. Derivatives up to 10th order were computed with respect to material, loading, and geometrical parameters. The derivatives were used to generate reduced order models of the cable deformation and reaction forces at its ends with respect to multiple input parameters. Results show that from a single hypercomplex evaluation of the cable under a single vertical point load, it is possible to generate an accurate reduced order model capable of predicting the cable deformation with 1.5 times the load in the opposite direction and with 3.5 times the load in the same direction without resolving the system of equations.

Shaker-structure interaction modeling and analysis for nonlinear force appropriation testing

Nonlinear force appropriation is an extension of its linear counterpart where sinusoidal excitation is applied to a structure with a modal shaker and phase quadrature is achieved between the excitation and response. While a standard practice in modal testing, modal shaker excitation has the potential to alter the dynamics of the structure under test. Previous studies have been conducted to address several concerns, but this work specifically focuses on a shaker-structure interaction phenomenon which arises during the force appropriation testing of a nonlinear structure. Under pure-tone sinusoidal forcing, a nonlinear structure may respond not only at the fundamental harmonic but also potentially at sub- or superharmonics, or it can even produce aperiodic and chaotic motion in certain cases. Shaker-structure interaction occurs when the response physically pushes back against the shaker attachment, producing non-fundamental harmonic content in the force measured by the load cell, even for pure tone voltage input to the shaker. This work develops a model to replicate these physics and investigates their influence on the response of a nonlinear normal mode of the structure. Experimental evidence is first provided that demonstrates the generation of harmonic content in the measured load cell force during a force appropriation test. This interaction is replicated by developing an electromechanical model of a modal shaker attached to a nonlinear, three-mass dynamical system. Several simulated experiments are conducted both with and without the shaker model in order to identify which effects are specifically due to the presence of the shaker. Finally, the results of these simulations are then compared to the undamped nonlinear normal modes of the structure under test to evaluate the influence of shaker-structure interaction on the identified system’s dynamics.

Analysis of nonlinear features associated with radio-frequency sheaths

An analytic study is conducted of nonlinear features that arise when radio-frequency (RF) sheath boundary conditions are solved self-consistently with the electromagnetic fields in a magnetized plasma. An instability associated with RF sheath–plasma interactions is identified and shown to be closely linked with sheath–plasma resonance and the occurrence of multiple solutions. It is proposed that this instability serves as a physical mechanism that enables jumping from one solution branch to another, providing a physical basis for the prediction of an RF sheath hysteresis in the time domain. It is further shown that this instability can lead to non-intuitive features such as spontaneous symmetry breaking in an otherwise completely symmetric problem. In plane-stratified geometry, two analytically solvable examples are considered for the cases of an unbounded half-space and a bounded domain

High-impact dynamic-response analysis of nonlinear structures

Program predicts expected deformations and stresses in nonlinear simple geometric structures subjected to high-impact loading. Technique is based on node-wise predictor-corrector approach and requires moderate computer storage and run time for most problems. Program extends to include physical and geometrical nonlinearities.
