NeuroCoreX: Brain-Inspired Computing from Code to Circuit

NeuroCoreX is an open-source codebase that enables the implementation of brain-inspired, energy-efficient neuromorphic computing models on FPGA hardware. Designed to support real-time learning, all-to-all neural connectivity, and flexible network architectures, NeuroCoreX offers a hands-on, accessible platform for exploring biologically inspired models of neural computation. It empowers researchers, students, and developers to implement and experiment with adaptive systems—bringing the power of neuromorphic computing to a broader community through a low-cost, scalable, and reconfigurable framework.

Skip-Connected Self-Recurrent Spiking Neural Networks with Joint Intrinsic Parameter and Synaptic Weight Training

As an important class of spiking neural networks (SNNs), recurrent spiking neural networks (RSNNs) possess great computational power and have been widely used for processing sequential data like audio and text. However, most RSNNs suffer from two problems. 1. Due to the lack of architectural guidance, random recurrent connectivity is often adopted, which does not guarantee good performance. 2. Training of RSNNs is in general challenging, bottlenecking achievable model accuracy. To address these problems, we propose a new type of RSNNs called Skip-Connected Self-Recurrent SNNs (ScSr-SNNs). Recurrence in ScSr-SNNs is introduced in a stereotyped manner by adding self-recurrent connections to spiking neurons. The SNNs with self-recurrent connections can realize recurrent behaviors similar to those of more complex RSNNs while the error gradients can be more straightforwardly calculated due to the mostly feedforward nature of the network. The network dynamics is enriched by skip connections between nonadjacent layers. Moreover, we propose a new backpropagation (BP) method called backpropagated intrinsic plasticity (BIP) to further boost the performance of ScSr-SNNs by training intrinsic model parameters. Unlike standard intrinsic plasticity rules that adjust the neuron's intrinsic parameters according to neuronal activity, the proposed BIP method optimizes intrinsic parameters based on the backpropagated error gradient of a well-defined global loss function in addition to synaptic weight training. Here, based on challenging speech, neuromorphic speech, and neuromorphic image datasets, the proposed ScSr-SNNs can boost performance by up to 2.85% compared with other types of RSNNs trained by state-of-the-art BP methods.

Composite Behavior of Nanopore Array Large Memristors

Synthetic nanopores were recently demonstrated with memristive and nonlinear voltage-current behaviors, akin to ion channels in a cell membrane. Such ionic devices are considered a promising candidate for the development of brain-inspired neuromorphic computing techniques. In this work, we show the composite behavior of nanopore-array large memristors, formed with different membrane materials, pore sizes, electrolytes, and device arrangements. Anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes with 5 nm and 20 nm diameter pores and track-etched polycarbonate (PCTE) membranes with 10 nm diameter pores are tested and shown to demonstrate memristive and nonlinear behaviors with approximately 107–1010 pores in parallel when electrolyte concentration across the membranes is asymmetric. Ion diffusion through the large number of channels induces time-dependent electrolyte asymmetry that drives the system through different memristive states. The behaviors of series composite memristors with different configurations are also presented. In addition to helping understand fluidic devices and circuits for neuromorphic computing, the results also shed light on the development of field-assisted ion-selection-membrane filtration techniques as well as the investigations of large neurons and giant synapses. Further work is needed to de-embed parasitic components of the measurement setup to obtain intrinsic large memristor properties.

Dilute Combustion Control Using Spiking Neural Networks

Dilute combustion with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) in spark-ignition engines presents a cost-effective method for achieving higher levels of engine efficiency. At high levels of EGR, however, cycle-to-cycle variability (CCV) of the combustion process is exacerbated by sporadic occurrences of misfires and partial burns. Previous studies have shown that temporal deterministic patterns emerge at such conditions and certain combustion cycles have a significant influence over future events. Due to the complexity of the combustion process and the nature of CCV, harnessing all the deterministic information for control purposes has remained challenging even with physics based 0-D, 1-D, and high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models. In this study, we present a data-driven approach to optimize the combustion process by controlling CCV adjusting the cycle-to-cycle fuel injection quantity. Readily available data from in-cylinder pressure was used to train a spiking neural network (SNN) which learns the optimal way to manage fuel injection in order to reduce CCV while maintaining acceptable levels of fuel consumption. SNNs are particularly well suited for powertrain control applications due to their ability to be deployed on FPGA-based neuromorphic hardware which are small, inexpensive, and have a low power demand. The high-performance computing (HPC) resources of Oak Ridge National Laboratory were used to run an evolutionary-based training approach for choosing the best SNN configuration that minimizes the size of the network while achieving the desired goal. The neuromorphic hardware with the optimized SNN deployed was connected to the rapid prototyping engine control system for real-time control implementation and tested on a single cylinder version of a GM LNF 4-cylinder engine. The results show a significant reduction of CCV with a small percentage of additional fuel used to stabilize the charge.

Hydrogen-induced tunable remanent polarization in a perovskite nickelate

Materials with field-tunable polarization are of broad interest to condensed matter sciences and solid-state device technologies. Here, using hydrogen (H) donor doping, we modify the room temperature metallic phase of a perovskite nickelate NdNiO 3 into an insulating phase with both metastable dipolar polarization and space-charge polarization. We then demonstrate transient negative differential capacitance in thin film capacitors. The space-charge polarization caused by long-range movement and trapping of protons dominates when the electric field exceeds the threshold value. First-principles calculations suggest the polarization originates from the polar structure created by H doping. We find that polarization decays within ~1 second which is an interesting temporal regime for neuromorphic computing hardware design, and we implement the transient characteristics in a neural network to demonstrate unsupervised learning. These discoveries open new avenues for designing ferroelectric materials and electrets using light-ion doping.

Dynamic Stabilization of Metastable States in Triple-Well Ferroelectric Sn 2 P 2 S 6

Polarization dynamics in ferroelectric materials is governed by the effective potential energy landscape of the order parameter. The unique aspect of ferroelectrics compared to many other transitions is the possibility of more than two potential wells, leading to complicated energy landscapes with new fundamental and functional properties. In this work, direct dynamic evidence is revealed of a triple-well potential in the metal thiophosphate Sn 2 P 2 S 6 compound using multivariate scanning probe microscopy combined with theoretical simulations. The key finding is that the metastable zero polarization state can be accessed through a gradual switching process and is stabilized over a broad range of electric fields. Simulations confirm that the observed zero polarization state originates from a kinetic stabilization of the nonpolar state of the triple-well, as opposed to domain walls. Dynamically, the triple-well of Sn 2 P 2 S 6 becomes equivalent to antiferroelectric hysteresis loops. Therefore, this material combines the robust and well-defined domain structure of a proper ferroelectric with dynamic hysteresis loops present in antiferroelectrics. Moreover, the triple-well enhances mem-capacitive effects in Sn 2 P 2 S 6 , which are forbidden for ideal double-well ferroelectrics. These findings provide a path to tunable electronic elements for beyond binary high-density computing devices and neuromorphic circuits based on dynamic properties of the triple-well.

Ultrafast Activation and Tuning of Topological Textures in Ferroelectric Nanostructures

Polar topological textures are recently discovered in ultra–thin ferroelectrics, including stripe, labyrinth, or bubble states. Enabling to shape on–demand, these topologies herein can provide an original platform for potential applications. Here, using first–principle–based calculations, it is shown that THz electric field pulses are an efficient means for generating a plethora of topological states in ultrathin films made by a prototypical ferroelectric system, depending on the characteristics of these pulses and films. Consequently, these ultrafast electrical pulses in ultra–thin ferroelectrics offer key ingredients for mimicking neuronal and synaptic behaviors, including all–optical devices, and open a new avenue for topological objects to neuromorphic systems.

Physical Compact Model for Three-Terminal SONOS Synaptic Circuit Element

A well-posed physics-based compact model for a three-terminal silicon–oxide–nitride–oxide–silicon (SONOS) synaptic circuit element is presented for use by neuromorphic circuit/system engineers. Based on technology computer aided design (TCAD) simulations of a SONOS device, the model contains a nonvolatile memristor with the state variable QM representing the memristor charge under the gate of the three-terminal element. By incorporating the exponential dependence of the memristance on QM and the applied bias V for the gate, the compact model agrees quantitatively with the results from TCAD simulations as well as experimental measurements for the drain current. The compact model is implemented through VerilogA in the circuit simulation package Cadence Spectre and reproduces the experimental training behavior for the source–drain conductance of a SONOS device after applying writing pulses ranging from –12 V to +11 V, with an accuracy higher than 90%.

Self‐Strain Suppression of the Metal‐to‐Insulator Transition in Phase‐Change Oxide Devices

Strongly correlated materials exhibiting phase transitions which can be controlled through external stimuli, such as electric fields, are promising for future computing technologies beyond conventional semiconductor transistors. Devices that take advantage of structural phase transitions have inherent built‐in memory, reminiscent of synapses and neurons, and are thus natural candidates for neuromorphic computing. Of particular interest are phase‐change oxides, which allow for control over the metal‐to‐insulator transition. Here, X‐ray nano‐diffraction structural imaging of micro‐devices fabricated with the archetypal phase‐change material vanadium sesquioxide (V 2 O 3 ) is reported. The devices contain a Ga ion‐irradiated region where the metal‐to‐insulator transition critical temperature is lowered, a useful feature for controlling neuron‐like spiking behavior. Results show that strain, induced by crystal lattice mismatch between the pristine and irradiated material, leads to a suppression of the metal‐to‐insulator‐transition. Suppression occurs within the irradiated region or along its edges, depending on the defect‐distribution and the size of the region. The observed self‐straining effect can extend to other phase‐change oxides and dominate as device dimensions are reduced and become too small to dissipate strain within the irradiated region. The findings are important for phase engineering in phase‐change devices and highlight the necessity to study phase transitions at the nanoscale.

Dual-ion ECRAM as a stable and accurate analog synapse

Electrochemical random-access memory (ECRAM) works by tuning the bulk electronic conductance of functional materials via reversible, electrochemical insertion of ions, resulting in stable analog resistive switching, attractive for analog in-memory and neuromorphic computing. However, achieving fast programming for training and long retention for inference has been elusive. Protonic ECRAM demonstrates fast programming but insufficient retention, while oxygen-based ECRAM with excellent retention requires elevated programming temperatures. Cu-based ECRAM offers a compromise, with an activation energy (E A ) of ≈0.76 eV between protons (E A ≈ 0.4 eV) and oxygen (E A > 1 eV), enabling extensive retention and room temperature programming. Combining Cu 2+ ions with protons to form a dual-ion ECRAM, we demonstrate two distinct switching behaviors: fast switching at ≤5 V, (E A ≈ 0.45 eV) via protons, and nonvolatile, room temperature switching at ≥8 V, with E A ≈ 0.76 eV via Cu 2+ ions. In conclusion, the Cu-based state exhibits a wide conductance range, with excellent retention, low noise, and linear current-voltage behavior, achieving digital-equivalent ImageNet inference accuracy.

Two-dimensional materials for bio-realistic neuronal computing networks

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals materials have found broad utility in a diverse range of applications including electronics, optoelectronics, renewable energy, and quantum information technologies. Meanwhile, exponentially growing digital data coupled with the ubiquity of artificial intelligence algorithms have generated significant interest in edge neuromorphic computing as an alternative to centralized cloud computing. The drive to incorporate neuroscience principles into computing hardware is motivated by the low power consumption, parallel processing, and reconfigurability of the human brain. The diverse library of 2D materials with atomic-level thicknesses, exceptional electrostatic tunability, and integration versatility is particularly well-suited for realizing bio-realistic synaptic and neuronal functionality. Here, we summarize past and present work in this field and outline the frontier challenges that have not yet been overcome. Here we also delineate potential solutions and suggest that the neuroscience principles of criticality and synchrony have the potential to inspire breakthrough applications of 2D materials in neuronal computing networks.

Backpropagation-based learning with local derivative approximation and memory replay in biologically plausible neural systems

When learning, the brain modifies individual synaptic connections to reach a desired behavior. Animal and human brains have been shown to be incredibly capable of learning complex and varied functions across a wide variety of tasks. In recent years, artificial neural networks, inspired by human and animal brains, have shown great capabilities in learning a wide variety of difficult tasks. However, artificial neural networks primarily teach themselves through the use of backpropagation, a learning method which has no clear analogue within the brain. Additionally, Artificial Neural Networks primarily use continuous activation functions, which differ significantly from the spiking neuronal behavior present in the brain. In this paper, we discuss and demonstrate a biologically plausible learning method that approximates backpropagation through two techniques on Spiking Neural Networks. First, we show that the local temporal derivatives that are necessary for backpropagation can be approximately recovered through reconstruction using spike timings. Second, we show that through learning during a sleep phase, inspired by neuroscience research into memory replay, the localized parallel feedback path can learn to approximate the derivative through the forward path weight matrix, thus solving the weight transport problem. Lastly, we demonstrate that the combination of these two methods can approach or exceed the accuracy of backpropagation-based methods for a variety of neuromorphic vision tasks while maintaining biological plausibility.

Spatial Interactions in Hydrogenated Perovskite Nickelate Synaptic Networks

A key aspect of how the brain learns and enables decision-making processes is through synaptic interactions. Electrical transmission and communication in a network of synapses are modulated by extracellular fields generated by ionic chemical gradients. Emulating such spatial interactions in synthetic networks can be of potential use for neuromorphic learning and the hardware implementation of artificial intelligence. Here, in this work, we demonstrate that in a network of hydrogen-doped perovskite nickelate devices, electric bias across a single junction can tune the coupling strength between the neighboring cells. Electrical transport measurements and spatially resolved diffraction and nanoprobe X-ray and scanning microwave impedance spectroscopic studies suggest that graded proton distribution in the inhomogeneous medium of hydrogen-doped nickelate film enables this behavior. We further demonstrate signal integration through the coupling of various junctions.

Integration of CeO 2 -Based Memristor with Vertically Aligned Nanocomposite Thin Film: Enabling Selective Conductive Filament Formation for High-Performance Electronic Synapses

The CeO 2 -based memristor has attracted significant attention due to its intrinsic resistive switching (RS) properties, large on/off ratio, and great plasticity, making it a promising candidate for artificial synapses. However, significant challenges such as high power consumption and poor device reliability hinder its broad application in neuromorphic microchips. To tackle these issues, in this work, we design a novel bilayer (BL) memristor by integrating a CeO 2 -based memristor with a Co-CeO 2 vertically aligned nanocomposite (VAN) layer and compare it with the single layer (SL) memristor. Preliminary electrical testing reveals that the BL memristor offers a reduced set/reset voltage (~67% lower), a higher on/off ratio (~5 × 10 2 ), enhanced device reliability, and improved device-to-device variation compared to the SL memristor. Insight from COMSOL simulation, coupled with microstructural analysis, provides a comprehensive elucidation on how the VAN layer facilitates the selective conductive filament (CF) formation. Subsequently, the plasticity of the BL memristor is evaluated through long-term potentiation/depression (LTP/LTD), paired-pulse facilitation (PPF), and spike-time-dependent plasticity (STDP). The spiking neural network (SNN) built upon the BL memristor achieves remarkable accuracy (~94%) after only 12 iterations, underscoring its potential for high-performance neural networks.

Epitaxial stabilization and oxygen vacancy control of EuNiO 3 thin films

Rare-earth nickelates exhibit valuable behavior for neuromorphic computing at low temperature: Building blocks for biologically inspired microelectronic neurons like electrically driven insulator–metal transitions (IMTs), negative differential resistance, and self-oscillations have been shown up to 230 K for SmNiO 3 and NdNiO 3 . EuNiO 3 raises the IMT far above room temperature (460 K) but high-quality thin films are challenging to synthesize. Here, we explore the epitaxial stabilization of EuNiO 3 using pulsed laser deposition. X-ray diffraction reciprocal space maps, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy show that higher growth temperature (800 °C) reduces oxygen vacancy concentrations in EuNiO 3 . Pseudomorphic EuNiO 3 is demonstrated on both SrLaAlO 4 and NdGaO 3 substrates, and LaNiO 3 buffer layers are incorporated to facilitate future vertical device fabrication. In contrast to bulk thermodynamic predictions, the greater oxidation and crystallinity at higher temperature we observe indicates that epitaxial substrates can stabilize EuNiO 3 at O 2 pressures less than 1 atm.

Ion transport through reconfigurable nanoparticle-surfactant stabilized droplet interface bilayers

Despite their adaptability and mechanical stability, Pickering emulsions based on the interfacial assembly of colloidal particles have not found use in iontronics, since the dense interfacial packing of micron-sized particles precludes functional connectivity between two droplets. In this work, we introduce a chemically reconfigurable droplet interface bilayer (DIB) platform based on the interfacial assembly of nanoparticle-surfactants (NPSs) that enables spontaneous or field-induced formation of ion-conducting nanochannels, eliminating the need of ionophores or nanochannel-forming proteins. These nanoscopic channels emerge from packing defects in the jammed interfacial assemblies of the charged NPSs and support size and charge selective, hysteretic ion transport governed by interfacial electrostatics and dimensional constraints. The NPS-DIBs show short-term and long-term plasticity, hallmarks of neuromorphic behavior, that are mediated by the structural and chemical design of the bilayer. These assemblies establish a versatile, chemically tunable platform that couples soft-matter mechanics with interfacial ionic functionality, offering a robust foundation for soft iontronic systems.

Study of carbon nanotube embedded honey as a resistive switching material

In this paper, natural organic honey embedded with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was studied as a resistive switching material for biodegradable nonvolatile memory in emerging neuromorphic systems. CNTs were dispersed in a honey-water solution with the concentration of 0.2 wt% CNT and 30 wt% honey. The final honey-CNT-water mixture was spin-coated and dried into a thin film sandwiched in between Cu bottom electrode and Al top electrode to form a honey-CNT based resistive switching memory (RSM). Surface morphology, electrical characteristics and current conduction mechanism were investigated. The results show that although CNTs formed agglomerations in the dried honey-CNT film, both switching speed and the stability in SET and RESET process of honey-CNT RSM were improved. The mechanism of current conduction in CNT is governed by Ohm’s law in low-resistance state and the low-voltage range in high-resistance state, but transits to the space charge limited conduction at high voltages approaching the SET voltage.

Imaging of Electrothermal Filament Formation in a Mott Insulator

Resistive switching—the current- and voltage-induced change of electrical resistance—is at the core of memristive devices, which play an essential role in the emerging field of neuromorphic computing. This study is about resistive switching in a Mott insulator, which undergoes a thermally driven metal-to-insulator transition. Two distinct switching mechanisms are reported for such a system: electric-field-driven resistive switching and electrothermal resistive switching. The latter results from an instability caused by Joule heating. Here, we present the visualization of the reversible resistive switching in a planar V 2 O 3 thin-film device using high-resolution wide-field microscopy in combination with electric transport measurements. We investigate the interaction of the electrothermal instability with the strain-induced spontaneous phase separation in the V 2 O 3 thin film at the Mott transition. The photomicrographs show the formation of a narrow metallic filament with a minimum width ≲500 nm. Although the filament formation and the overall shape of the current-voltage characteristics (IVCs) are typical of an electrothermal breakdown, we also observe atypical effects such as oblique filaments, filament splitting, and hysteretic IVCs with sawtoothlike jumps at high currents in the low-resistance regime. We are able to reproduce the experimental results in a numerical model based on a two-dimensional resistor network. This model demonstrates that resistive switching in this case is indeed electrothermal and that the intrinsic heterogeneity is responsible for the atypical effects. This heterogeneity is strongly influenced by strain, thereby establishing a link between switching dynamics and structural properties.
