Methods of preparing single-walled carbon nanotube networks

Methods for determining desired doping conditions for a semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotube (s-SWCNT) are provided. One exemplary method includes doping each of a plurality of s-SWCNT networks under a respective set of doping conditions; determining a thermoelectric (TE) power factor as a function of a fractional bleach of an absorption spectrum for the plurality of s-SWCNT networks doped under the respective sets of doping conditions; and using the function to identify one of the TE power factors within a range of the fractional bleach of the absorption spectrum. The identified TE power factor corresponds to the desired doping conditions.

Covalent reinforcement of carbon nanotube assemblies

Disclosed here is a method of fabricating a covalently reinforced carbon nanotube (CNT) assembly. The method includes producing a CNT assembly by pulling entangled CNTs from a CNT array fabricated on a substrate, the CNT assembly including a plurality of CNTs that are aligned; and creating covalent bonding between the CNTs of the CNT assembly by applying a high energy ion irradiation to the CNT assembly.

Optimization of Graphite–SiO blend electrodes for lithium-ion batteries: Stable cycling enabled by single-walled carbon nanotube conductive additive

Lithium-alloying materials are of great interest to improve the gravimetric and volumetric energy density of lithium-ion batteries, though their associated volume fluctuation with cycling often leads to poor cycling performance. Active-inactive alloys and blending alloys with carbon materials are common strategies to accommodate volume fluctuation. Herein we set out to optimize graphite-SiO blend electrode formulations to eliminate rapid capacity fade. Electrodes with highly stable cycling were prepared by simple planetary mixing procedures, enabled by the use of just a fraction of a weight percent of commercial SWCNTs as the only conductive additive, and by the appropriate choice of binder/stabilizing agent. In fact, the use of SWCNTs allowed for graphite-free SiO electrodes with approximately 74% higher volumetric energy density relative to traditional graphite electrodes, and superior capacity retention in coin-type full-cell testing versus NMC532 cathodes.

Deterministic chaos in the self-assembly of β sheet nanotubes from an amphipathic oligopeptide

The self-assembly of designed peptides into filaments and other higher-order structures has been the focus of intense interest because of the potential for creating new biomaterials and biomedical devices. These peptide assemblies have also been used as models for understanding biological processes, such as the pathological formation of amyloid. Here we investigate the assembly of an octapeptide sequence, Ac-FKFEFKFE-NH2, motivated by prior studies that demonstrated that this amphipathic beta strand peptide self-assembled into fibrils and biocompatible hydrogels. Using high-resolution cryoelectron microscopy (cryo-EM), we are able to determine the atomic structure for two different coexisting forms of the fibrils, containing four and five beta sandwich protofilaments, respectively. Surprisingly, the inner walls in both forms are parallel beta sheets, while the outer walls are antiparallel beta sheets. Our results demonstrate the chaotic nature of peptide self-assembly and illustrate the importance of cryo-EM structural analysis to understand the complex phase behavior of these materials at near-atomic resolution.
