Blockchain-Enabled Cyber-Secure Microgrid Control Using Consensus Algorithm: Preprint

This paper proposes a distributed control method based on a consensus algorithm for distributed energy resources (DERs) using blockchain as a secure communication medium for cyber resilience. Each DER communicates with a local blockchain server that is maintained by the distributed ledger technology to allow for securely sharing local measurements among neighboring assets to achieve the global control objectives, i.e., voltage and frequency regulation as well as accurate power sharing among the DERs, including collective grid-forming capability. To prove that the distributed control can retain system stability under a blockchain-induced variable communication delay, Lyapunov function-based stability analysis is carried out. This paper demonstrates the concept on an 11-bus test case developed in MATLAB Simulink, which has been modified from the IEEE 9-bus test case, to study dynamic operations of the five inverter-based DERs working with a blockchain-induced variable delay. The results validate the superior performance of the proposed control method, compared to heavily compromised operations of the other test cases without the security measure, affected by heavy communication delays and communication interruptions.

A model for the trap-assisted tunneling mechanism in diffused n-p and implanted n(+)-p HgCdTe photodiodes

A theoretical model for the trap-assisted tunneling process in diffused n-on-p and implanted n(+)-on-p HgCdTe photodiodes is presented. The model describes the traps and the trap characteristics: concentration, energy level, and capture cross sections. We have observed that the above two types of diodes differ in the voltage dependence of the trap-assisted tunneling current and dynamic resistance. Our model takes this difference into account and offers an explanation of the phenomenon. The good fit between measured and calculated DC characteristics of the photodiodes (for medium and high reverse bias and for temperatures from 65 to 140 K) supports the validity of the model.

Enabling Seamless Integration of EV Charging Infrastructure with Weak Electric Grids

Widespread adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs) for light, medium, and heavy-duty applications has gained significant interest. Based on ownership and user preferences, light duty and local delivery medium-duty EVs are typically connected to grid distribution networks whereas larger medium duty and heavy-duty EVs are typically connected to distribution or even sub-transmission networks. Challenges with at-scale EVs and charging infrastructure supporting them include interoperability, distribution network upgrades, surge in demand charges, power quality issues, voltage stability, etc. Based on real-world data, steady-state and dynamic assessments of light-duty EV charging with a focus on DC Fast Charging (DCFC) for weak distribution grids is presented. Three main areas of contributions in this paper include - steady state and dynamic power quality measurements and assessments using real world data, transient assessments of light duty EV integration with weak distribution networks (IEEE 13 node feeder system) under grid-connected and microgrid modes, and formulation of an intelligent charging decision algorithm to enable an impact-minimal charging.

Characterization and snubbing of a bidirectional MCT in a resonant ac link converter

The MOS-Controlled Thyristor (MCT) is emerging as a powerful switch that combines the better characteristics of existing power devices. A study of switching stresses on an MCT switch under zero voltage resonant switching is presented. The MCT is used as a bidirectional switch in an ac/ac pulse density modulated inverter for induction motor drive. Current and voltage spikes are observed and analyzed with variations in the timing of the switching. Different snubber circuit configurations are under investigation to minimize the effect of these transients. The results will be extended to study and test the MCT switching in a medium power (5 hp) induction motor drive.

An Experimental Validation of a Revised Paschen's Law Relating to the ESD of Aerospace Vehicle Surfaces

This work seeks to experimentally validate a modified Paschen law which takes into account the effects of electron-ion pair removal between two electrodes within a dynamic gas medium. A test facility has been designed and fabricated in order to create supersonic flow conditions within the test section. Custom designed electrodes are mounted into the test section at desired gap distances. A power supply is utilized to charge the electrodes until discharge occurs. The discharge voltage of the electrode is recorded over a range of pressures within the test section. An operational pressure range is calculated using isentropic flow and normal shock relations at the desired Mach numbers. These values are plotted against the modified Paschen curve as a function of Mach number, electrode gap distance, and pressure as a means of validation.

Method and apparatus for nondestructive testing

High voltage is applied to an arc gap adjacent to a test specimen to develop a succession of high frequency arc discharges. Those high frequency arc discharges generate pulses of ultrasonic energy within the test specimen without requiring the arc discharges to contact that test specimen and without requiring a coupling medium. Those pulses can be used for detection of flaws and measurements of certain properties and stresses within the test specimen.

Unique properties of SBN and their use in a layered optical memory

Holographic storage experiments using crystal Sr(0.75)Ba(0.25)Nb2O6 (SBN 75/25) as a volume-phase holographic medium show that this material is the most sensitive crystalline storage medium yet discovered. An exposure level of 0.003 J/sq cm at 0.488 micron produces a 1% diffraction efficiency in a 5-mm length of crystal. In addition to high recording sensitivity, SBN 75/25 exhibits interesting electric-field induced effects that include electric-field enhanced recording sensitivity and voltage-switchable latent-to-active holographic reconstruction efficiency. These effects are explained in terms of drift and diffusion of photoionized carriers coupled with the nonlinear electrooptic behavior characteristic of this low Curie temperature ferroelectric crystal. A mechanism is proposed that correlates the observed electrically controlled holographic response with the dielectric behavior of the crystal. These interesting effects are used to implement a novel, layered optical memory having no moving parts and having electrical access for writing or reading selected layers.

Electrical and Thermal Characteristics of Lithium-Ion Cells

The 18,650 type lithium ion cells are characterized by a cell resistance of 130 mOmega, capacity of 1.27 Ah at 25 C, and a mid-discharge voltage of 3.6 V. The capacity loss in the 72-hour stand test was 3.39%. The heat dissipation properties were determined by a radiative calorimeter. During charge, initial endothermic cooling and subsequent exothermic cooling beyond 55% state- of-charge were observed. At C/2 rate of discharge (which is considered medium rate), the heat dissipated was 17 mW/cu cm. The heat dissipation profile during discharge is also unique in the presence of a minimum that is different from that observed for Ni-Cd, Ni-MH, and Ni-H2 cells.

Amorphous ZrCl 4 -Based Superionic Conductor as a Cost-Effective Solid Electrolyte for Batteries

Developing highly conductive and cost-effective solid electrolytes is essential for the commercialization of all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs). Zr-based halide electrolytes hold great promise due to their low estimated cost and high oxidation stability. However, the ionic conductivities of most of them are not high enough to enable moderate- and high-rate cycling of ASSBs. Here, fast ion transport is achieved in a group of cost-effective ZrCl 4 -based electrolytes via a design strategy to create highly disordered amorphous structures. Amorphous Li 0.8 ZrCl 4 (SO 4 ) 0.4 , with a low estimated cost of $21 kg –1 , achieves an ionic conductivity of 1.86 mS cm –1 at 25 °C. It also shows a high oxidation limit of 4.5 V vs Li/Li + and good compatibility with high-voltage cathodes, as demonstrated by the stable cycling of ASSBs (73.7% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 1 C). Synchrotron X-ray diffraction, pair distribution function analysis, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy reveal that the outstanding conductivity of these amorphous electrolytes is closely related to their short-range and medium-range ordering, revealing new insights for designing high-performance, cost-effective solid electrolytes.

Helical Covalent Polymers with Unidirectional Ion Channels as Single Lithium-Ion Conducting Electrolytes

Single-ion conducting polymer electrolytes have attracted great attention as safe alternatives to liquid electrolytes in high energy density lithium-ion batteries. Herein, we report the first example of a crystalline anionic helical polymer as a single lithium-ion conducting solid polymer electrolyte (SPE). Single-crystal X-ray analysis shows that the polymer folds into densely packed double helices, with bundles of unidirectional negatively charged channels formed that can facilitate lithium-ion transportation. Such a helical covalent polymer ( HCP) exhibits excellent room temperature lithium-ion conductivity (1.2 x 10 -3 S cm -1 ) in the absence of external lithium salts, a high transference number (0.84), low activation energy (0.14 eV), and a wide electrochemical stability window (0.2-5 V). We found that nonflammable, nonvolatile ionic liquid can serve as a solvating medium and excellent conductivity enhancer (>1000 times increase). These ion-conducting properties are comparable to the best polyethylene oxide-based polymer electrolytes mixed with lithium salts. Finally, we show that the solvated HCP SPE enables the reversible cycling of an all-solid-state cell prepared with a high-voltage NMC 811 cathode. Our study opens up new possibilities for developing next-generation high-performance solid-state electrolytes.

The Effects of Threshold Voltage and Number of Fins per Transistor on the TID Response of GF 12LP Technology

This abstract presents a comprehensive analysis of total ionizing dose (TID) response in GlobalFoundries’ 12LP 12nm bulk FinFET technology using 10keV X-rays. Devices with higher threshold voltages (VTs) demonstrated lower increases in off-state leakage current (IDS,OFF) post-irradiation, highlighting the mitigating role of high VT in TID response. Our data shows that transistors with fewer fins exhibit superior TID resistance, implying lower susceptibility to radiation effects. Our study also probed two bias conditions, "Gate-On" and "Pass-Gate," with the former displaying more severe TID degradation. Interestingly, p-type devices displayed negligible degradation, underscoring their inherent resilience to TID effects. Additionally, medium thick n-type devices echoed the fin-count-dependent TID response observed in other transistor types, further strengthening our findings. These results underscore the importance of strategic transistor selection and design for enhancing the TID resilience of future CMOS FinFET architectures, particularly critical in radiation-intense environments.

Interstellar-gas experiment (A0038)

The objectives of this experiment are to collect and isotopically analyze interstellar gas atoms around the orbit of the Earth for the purpose of obtaining new data relevant to understanding nucleosynthesis, and to study the dynamics of the interstellar wind inside the heliosphere and the isotopic composition of the interstellar medium outside the heliosphere. The experiment hardware will act as a set of simple cameras with high-purity copper-beryllium collecting foils serving as the film. The experiment housing will mount and thermally control the foils, establish the viewing angles and viewing direction, provide baffling to reject ambient neutral particles, provide a voltage grid to reject ionospheric charged particles, sequence collecting foils, control exposure times, and protect the foils from contamination during the deployment and retrieval of the LDEF. After being returned to Earth, the entrapped atoms can be analyzed by mass spectroscopy to determine the relative abundance of the different isotopes of helium and neon. An attempt will also be made to detect argon.

Acoustooptic pulse-echo transducer system

A pulse-echo transducer system which uses an ultrasonic generating element and an optical detection technique is described. The transmitting transducer consists of a concentric ring electrode pattern deposited on a circular, X-cut quartz substrate with a circular hole in the center. The rings are independently pulsed with a sequence high voltage signals phased in such a way that the ultrasonic waves generated by the separate rings superimpose to produce a composite field which is focused at a controllable distance below the surface of the specimen. The amplitude of the field reflected from this focus position is determined by the local reflection coefficient of the medium at the effective focal point. By processing the signals received for a range of ultrasonic transducer array focal lengths, the system can be used to locate and size anomalies within solids and liquids. Applications in both nondestructive evaluation and biomedical scanning are suggested.

Modeling and Simulation of Trapping Mechanisms of Granular Media in Space

This paper describes the modeling and simulation of trapped granular media, within the context of the Granular Imager project. We describe the physics of trapped granular media in space, and the methodologies used to stably confine and shape such a medium using electromagnetic fields. The numerical models have also been validated with results in the literature, obtaining excellent agreement. The results of the numerical tests indicate that it is possible, with structural arrangements of rings and plates at different levels of electrostatic potential, to stably confine one or more charged particles, when driven by voltages that can be modulated in time and space.
