Properties of the highly ionized disk and halo gas toward two distant high-latitude stars

Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) intermediate -resolution observations of S III, Si III, Al III, Si IV, C IV, and N V absorption along the sight lines to HD 18100 (l = 217.9 deg, b = -62.7, d = 3.1 kpc, z = -2.8 kpc) and HD 100340 (l = 258.9 deg, b = +61.2 deg, d = 5.3 kpc, z = 4.6 kpc) are presented. These small science aperture spectra have resolutions ranging from 11 to 20 km/s full width at half maximum (FWHM) and S/N from 30 to 65 per diode substep. Strong absorption by moderately and highly ionized gas is seen in each direction. The absorption in the direction of the south Galactic polar region (HD 18100) is kinematically simple, while the absorption in the direction of north Galactic polar region (HD 100304) is kinematically complex. In each case the absorption by the highly ionized gas lies within the velocity range of absorption by neutral and weakly ionized gas. Along each sight line, the velocity dispersion determined from the unsaturated absorption lines increases with the energy required to create each ion. The logarithmic column densities for Al III, Si IV, C IV, and N V are log N(atoms/sq cm = 12.71, 13.10, 13.58, and 12.75 toward HD 18100 and log N = 12.88, 13.31, 13.83, and 13.04 toward HD 100340. Average ionic ratios among these species are very similar along the two sight lines. Differences in profile shape between the absorption for AL II, Si IV, C IV, and N V provide additional support for the claim of Savage, Sembach, & Cardelli (1994) that there exists two types of highly ionized gas in the interstellar medium. One type of highly ionized gas is responsible for the structured Si IV absorption and part of the C IV absorption. In this gas N(C IV)/N(Si IV) approximately 3.0 and N(C IV)/N(N V) greater than 6. The absorption by this gas seems to be associated with some type of self-regulating interface or mixing layer between the warm and hot interstellar medium. The other type of highly ionized gas is responsible for most of the N V absorption, part of the C IV absorption, and has very little associated Si IV absorption. In this gas N(C IV)/N(N V) is approximately 1 to 3. This gas is hot (T greater than 2 x 10(exp 5) K) and may be tracing the cooling gas of supernova (SN) bubbles or a Galactic fountain. The relative mixture of these two types of highly ionized gas varies from one sight line to the next. The two sight lines in this study sample halo gas in the solar neighborhood and have a smaller percentage of the more highly ionized gas than inner Galaxy sight lines.

Advancing energy storage through solubility prediction: leveraging the potential of deep learning

Solubility prediction plays a crucial role in energy storage applications, such as redox flow batteries, because it directly affects the efficiency and reliability. Researchers have developed various methods that utilize quantum calculations and descriptors to predict the aqueous solubilities of organic molecules. Notably, machine learning models based on descriptors have shown promise for solubility prediction. As deep learning tools, graph neural networks (GNNs) have emerged to capture complex structure–property relationships for material property prediction. Specifically, MolGAT, a type of GNN model, was designed to incorporate n-dimensional edge attributes, enabling the modeling of intricacies in molecular graphs and enhancing the prediction capabilities. In a previous study, MolGAT successfully screened 23 467 promising redox-active molecules from a database of over 500 000 compounds, based on redox potential predictions. This study focused on applying the MolGAT model to predict the aqueous solubility (log S) of a broad range of organic compounds, including those previously screened for redox activity. The model was trained on a diverse sample of 8494 organic molecules from AqSolDB and benchmarked against literature data, demonstrating superior accuracy compared with other state of the art graph-based and descriptor-based models. Subsequently, the trained MolGAT model was employed to screen redox-active organic compounds identified in the first phase of high-throughput virtual screening, targeting favorable solubility in energy storage applications. The second round of screening, which considered solubility, yielded 12 332 promising redox-active and soluble organic molecules suitable for use in aqueous redox flow batteries. Thus, the two-phase high-throughput virtual screening approach utilizing MolGAT, specifically trained for redox potential and solubility, is an effective strategy for selecting suitable intrinsically soluble redox-active molecules from extensive databases, potentially advancing energy storage through reliable material development. This indicates that the model is reliable for predicting the solubility of various molecules and provides valuable insights for energy storage, pharmaceutical, environmental, and chemical applications.

A Search for FeH in Hot-Jupiter Atmospheres with High-dispersion Spectroscopy

Most of the molecules detected thus far in exoplanet atmospheres, such as water and CO, are present for a large range of pressures and temperatures. In contrast, metal hydrides exist in much more specific regimes of parameter space, and so can be used as probes of atmospheric conditions. Iron hydride (FeH) is a dominant source of opacity in low-mass stars and brown dwarfs, and evidence for its existence in exoplanets has recently been observed at low resolution. We performed a systematic search of archival CARMENES near-infrared data for signatures of FeH during transits of 12 exoplanets. These planets span a large range of equilibrium temperatures (600 ≲ T eq ≲ 4000 K) and surface gravities (2.5 ≲ logg ≲ 3.5). We did not find a statistically significant FeH signal in any of the atmospheres, but obtained potential low-confidence signals (signal-to-noise ratio ~ 3) in two planets, WASP-33b and MASCARA-2b. Previous modeling of exoplanet atmospheres indicate that the highest volume mixing ratios (VMRs) of 10 -7 to 10 -9 are expected for temperatures between 1800 and 3000 K and log g≳3. The two planets for which we find low-confidence signals are in the regime where strong FeH absorption is expected. We performed injection and recovery tests for each planet and determined that FeH would be detected in every planet for VMRs ≫10 -6 , and could be detected in some planets for VMRs as low as 10 -9.5 . Additional observations are necessary to conclusively detect FeH and assess its role in the temperature structures of hot-Jupiter atmospheres.

Linking Stream Chemistry to Subsurface Redox Architecture

As drinking-water scarcity grows worldwide, we need to improve predictions of the quantity and quality of our water resources. An overarching problem for model improvement is that we do not know the geological structure of aquifers in sufficient detail. In this work, we demonstrate that mineral-water reactions imprint structure in the subsurface that impacts the flow and transport of some chemical species. Specifically, pyrite, a ubiquitous mineral, commonly oxidizes and depletes in the upper layers of the weathering profile in most humid watersheds, only remaining at depths of meters. We hypothesize that variations in concentrations (C) of pyrite-derived sulfate released into rivers as a function of discharge (q) reflect the rate-limiting step and depth of pyrite-oxidizing layers. We found that log C - log q behaviors thus differ in small and large watersheds in the Susquehanna River Basin as well as in selected watersheds in the Western United States. Although coal mining changes pyrite oxidation from closed to open system with respect to O 2 , patterns in stream chemistry as a function of discharge are consistent with deep and shallow pyrite oxidation zones in small and large watersheds respectively. Therefore, understanding the subsurface patterns of mineral reactions and how they affect the architecture of aquifers will elucidate patterns of changing river chemistry and our ability to manage water resources in the future under accelerated land use and climate change.

Line-blanketed model stellar atmospheres applied to Sirius

The primary goal of this analysis is to determine whether the effects of atomic bound-bound transitions on stellar atmospheric structure can be represented well in models. The investigation is based on an approach which is called the method of artificial absorption edges. The method is described, developed, tested, and applied to the problem of fitting a model stellar atmosphere to Sirius. It is shown that the main features of the entire observed spectrum of Sirius can be reproduced to within the observational uncertainty by a blanketed flux-constant model with T sub eff = 9700 K and Log g = 4.26. The profile of H sub gamma is reproduced completely within the standard deviations of the measurements except near line center, where non-LTE effects are expected to be significant. The equivalent width of H sub gamma, the Paschen slope, the Balmer jump, and the absolute flux at 5550 A all agree with the observed values.

Mapping Canopy Damage from Understory Fires in Amazon Forests Using Annual Time Series of Landsat and MODIS Data

Understory fires in Amazon forests alter forest structure, species composition, and the likelihood of future disturbance. The annual extent of fire-damaged forest in Amazonia remains uncertain due to difficulties in separating burning from other types of forest damage in satellite data. We developed a new approach, the Burn Damage and Recovery (BDR) algorithm, to identify fire-related canopy damages using spatial and spectral information from multi-year time series of satellite data. The BDR approach identifies understory fires in intact and logged Amazon forests based on the reduction and recovery of live canopy cover in the years following fire damages and the size and shape of individual understory burn scars. The BDR algorithm was applied to time series of Landsat (1997-2004) and MODIS (2000-2005) data covering one Landsat scene (path/row 226/068) in southern Amazonia and the results were compared to field observations, image-derived burn scars, and independent data on selective logging and deforestation. Landsat resolution was essential for detection of burn scars less than 50 ha, yet these small burns contributed only 12% of all burned forest detected during 1997-2002. MODIS data were suitable for mapping medium (50-500 ha) and large (greater than 500 ha) burn scars that accounted for the majority of all fire-damaged forest in this study. Therefore, moderate resolution satellite data may be suitable to provide estimates of the extent of fire-damaged Amazon forest at a regional scale. In the study region, Landsat-based understory fire damages in 1999 (1508 square kilometers) were an order of magnitude higher than during the 1997-1998 El Nino event (124 square kilometers and 39 square kilometers, respectively), suggesting a different link between climate and understory fires than previously reported for other Amazon regions. The results in this study illustrate the potential to address critical questions concerning climate and fire risk in Amazon forests by applying the BDR algorithm over larger areas and longer image time series.

The delta upsilon = 1 fundamental bands of carbon monoxide in late-type stars

A program was begun to develop the fundamental vibration-rotation bands of CO near 4.7 micron, as a tool to investigate the properties of late type stellar atmospheres. The strong delta v = 1 lines are sensitive probes of the thermal structure of the outer layers, which can be strongly affected by the CO, itself: cooling in the fundamental lines can depress the surface temperature to low values that are in sharp contrast with those derived from chromospheric diagnostics like Ca II K and Mg II k. Cool atmospheric models are being constructed to reproduce observed high resolution CO spectra of several late-type stars. The sensitivity is illustrated of CO LTE spectra to variations in T sub eff, log g, (Fe/H), and isotopic abundances of C and O for a grid of such models. In parallel, the assumptions of LTE line formation are tested using newly available cross sections for translational-to-vibrational energy exchange in collisions of atomic H on CO. In addition, spectra of CO and Ca II K calculated from semi-empirical UV based hot chromospheric models are used to estimate geometrical filling factors for the CO dominated and chromospheric regions on the stellar surface, in the spirit of Ayres' thermal bifurcation scenario.

Coherent gluon radiation: beyond leading-log accuracy

Abstract Results are presented for the medium-induced, soft coherent radiation spectrum for all 2 → 2 partonic channels in QCD, at leading-order inα s but beyond leading logarithmic accuracy. The general formula is valid in the full kinematic range of the underlying process, and reduces to previous results in special cases. The soft gluon radiation spectrum is expressed in terms of thecolor density matrixspecific to each channel, quantifying the entanglement between the color components of the 2 → 2 production amplitude. Beyond the leading logarithm, the spectrum depends explicitly on the off-diagonal elements of this matrix, owing to the soft gluon’s ability to probe the internal color structure of the parton pair.

From the inner to outer Milky Way: a photometric sample of 2.6 million red clump stars

ABSTRACT Large pristine samples of red clump stars are highly sought after given that they are standard candles and give precise distances even at large distances. However, it is difficult to cleanly select red clumps stars because they can have the same Teff and log g as red giant branch stars. Recently, it was shown that the asteroseismic parameters, $\rm {\Delta }$P and $\rm {\Delta \nu }$, which are used to accurately select red clump stars, can be derived from spectra using the change in the surface carbon to nitrogen ratio ([C/N]) caused by mixing during the red giant branch. This change in [C/N] can also impact the spectral energy distribution. In this study, we predict the $\rm {\Delta }$P, $\rm {\Delta \nu }$, Teff, and log g using 2MASS, AllWISE, Gaia, and Pan-STARRS data in order to select a clean sample of red clump stars. We achieve a contamination rate of ∼20 per cent, equivalent to what is achieved when selecting from Teff and log g derived from low-resolution spectra. Finally, we present two red clump samples. One sample has a contamination rate of ∼20 per cent and ∼405 000 red clump stars. The other has a contamination of ∼33 per cent and ∼2.6 million red clump stars that includes ∼75 000 stars at distances >10 kpc. For |b| > 30 deg, we find ∼15 000 stars with contamination rate of ∼9 per cent. The scientific potential of this catalogue for studying the structure and formation history of the Galaxy is vast, given that it includes millions of precise distances to stars in the inner bulge and distant halo where astrometric distances are imprecise.

The ionization structure of the Orion nebula: Infrared line observations and models

Observations of the (O III) 52 and 88 micron lines and the (N III) 57 micron line have been made at 6 positions and the (Ne III) 36 micron line at 4 positions in the Orion Nebula to probe its ionization structure. The measurements, made with a -40" diameter beam, were spaced every 45" in a line south from and including the Trapezium. The wavelength of the (Ne III) line was measured to be 36.013 + or - 0.004 micron. Electron densities and abundance ratios of N(++)/O(++) have been calculated and compared to other radio and optical observations. Detailed one component and two component (bar plus halo) spherical models were calculated for exciting stars with effective temperatures of 37 to 40,000K and log g = 4.0 and 4.5. Both the new infrared observations and the visible line measurements of oxygen and nitrogen require T sub eff approx less than 37,000K. However, the double ionized neon requires a model with T sub eff more than or equal to 39,000K, which is more consistent with that inferred from the radio flux or spectral type. These differences in T sub eff are not due to effects of dust on the stellar radiation field, but are probably due to inaccuracies in the assumed stellar spectrum. The observed N(++)/O(++) ratio is almost twice the N(+)/O(+) ratio. The best fit models give N/H = 8.4 x 10 to the -5 power, O/H = 4.0 x 10 to the -4 power, and Ne/H = 1.3 x 10 to the -4 power. Thus neon and nitrogen are approximately solar, but oxygen is half solar in abundance. From the infrared O(++) lines it is concluded that the ionization bar results from an increase in column depth rather than from a local density enhancement.

The solubility of ErPO 4 and Er speciation in hydrothermal fluids at varying pH and salinity between 350 and 450 °C

The rare earth elements (REE) are important for the green-energy transition and can be incorporated into the REE phosphates, such as xenotime-(Y), which also hosts heavy REE (Tb– Lu). Xenotime-(Y) is a common accessory mineral in metamorphic rocks and a range of mineral deposits where it controls the mobility of heavy REE, however, the impact of high temperature aqueous fluids on the behavior of heavy REE is largely unknown. Thermodynamic modeling can be utilized as a tool to predict the mobility of REE in hydrothermal aqueous fluids, but must be supported by accurate experimental data. Here, we measured the solubility of endmember synthetic xenotime-structured ErPO4 in NaCl-HCl-NaOH-bearing aqueous solutions at 350 °C and water vapor saturation pressure, at 400 and at 450 °C and 500 bar using batch-type Inconel reactors. Erbium speciation was investigated as a function of pH from 2.8 to 8, where Er chloride species are predominant at acidic conditions (pH <3) and Er hydroxyl complexes are predominant at near- neutral to alkaline conditions (pH >3). At pH 7–9, the measured ErPO 4 solubility (-9.8 to -7.5 log m Er ) is up to 2.5 orders of magnitude lower than thermodynamic predictions (-9.4 to -6.7 log m Er ) using existing thermodynamic databases. At pH 2–3, the predicted ErPO 4 solubility is ~0.5 orders of magnitude higher at 350 °C and ~1 order of magnitude lower at 450 °C compared to experimentally measured Er concentrations. The thermodynamic properties of aqueous Er species were therefore revised in this study. The partial molal Gibbs energy of formation (Δ f G 0 T,P ) for aqueous Er hydroxyl and chloride species are optimized using GEMSFITS and the logarithmic formation constants (logβ n ( Cl,OH) ) were derived at each experimental temperature and pressure. The updated thermodynamic properties for Er hydroxyl species (Er(OH) +2 , Er(OH) 2 + , and Er(OH) 3 0 ) show that their stability shifts to more acidic conditions at and below 400 °C. The Er chloride species (ErCl +2 and ErCl 2 + ) show increased stability compared to Er hydroxyl species at temperatures of 450 °C and 0.01 mol/kg NaCl. The updated thermodynamic properties are implemented into the GEM-Selektor modeling package to investigate the mobility of Er in saline hydrothermal fluids in equilibrium with alkaline rocks. Importantly, the updated properties for Er hydroxyl species result in low Er solubility at rock equilibrated pH conditions due to an expanded hydroxyl predominance zone, but lower aqueous complex stability overall, whereas previous models suggest greater stability for aqueous Er species. Furthermore, ErPO 4 solubility increases with decreasing temperature due to the deprotonation of HCl, which increases the acidity of hydrothermal fluids and the availability of Cl - to complex with the REE. These simulations highlight how fluid-rock reaction and temperature affect the mobility of REE in hydrothermal ore-forming systems.

A Butterfly-Accelerated Volume Integral Equation Solver for Broad Permittivity and Large-Scale Electromagnetic Analysis

In this work, a butterfly-accelerated volume integral equation (VIE) solver is proposed for fast and accurate electromagnetic (EM) analysis of scattering from heterogeneous objects. The proposed solver leverages the hierarchical off-diagonal butterfly (HOD-BF) scheme to construct the system matrix and obtain its approximate inverse, used as a preconditioner. Complexity analysis and numerical experiments validate the O(N log 2 N) construction cost of the HOD-BF-compressed system matrix and O(N log 1.5 N) inversion cost for the preconditioner, where N is the number of unknowns in the high-frequency EM scattering problem. For many practical scenarios, the proposed VIE solver requires less memory and computational time to construct the system matrix and obtain its approximate inverse compared to a H matrix-accelerated VIE solver. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed solver have been demonstrated via its application to the EM analysis of large-scale canonical and real-world structures comprising of broad permittivity values and involving millions of unknowns.

Estimation of coarse dead wood stocks in intact and degraded forests in the Brazilian Amazon using airborne lidar

Coarse dead wood is an important component of forest carbon stocks, but it is rarely measured in Amazon forests and is typically excluded from regional forest carbon budgets. Our study is based on line intercept sampling for fallen coarse dead wood conducted along 103 transects with a total length of 48 km matched with forest inventory plots where standing coarse dead wood was measured in the footprints of larger areas of airborne lidar acquisitions. We developed models to relate lidar metrics and Landsat time series variables to coarse dead wood stocks for intact, logged, burned, or logged and burned forests. Canopy characteristics such as gap area produced significant individual relations for logged forests. For total fallen plus standing coarse dead wood (hereafter defined as total coarse dead wood), the relative root mean square error for models with only lidar metrics ranged from 33 % in logged forest to up to 36 % in burned forests. The addition of historical information improved model performance slightly for intact forests (31 % against 35 % relative root mean square error), not justifying the use of a number of disturbance events from historical satellite images (Landsat) with airborne lidar data. Lidar-derived estimates of total coarse dead wood compared favorably with independent ground-based sampling for areas up to several hundred hectares. The relations found between total coarse dead wood and variables quantifying forest structure derived from airborne lidar highlight the opportunity to quantify this important but rarely measured component of forest carbon over large areas in tropical forests.

Reining in Radium for Nuclear Medicine: Extra-Large Chelator Development for an Extra-Large Ion

Targeted α therapy (TAT) of soft-tissue cancers using the α particle-emitting radionuclide 223 Ra holds great potential because of its favorable nuclear properties, adequate availability, and established clinical use for treating metastatic prostate cancer of the bone. Despite these advantages, the use of 223 Ra has been largely overshadowed by other α emitters due to its challenging chelation chemistry. A key criterion that needs to be met for a radionuclide to be used in TAT is its stable attachment to a targeting vector via a bifunctional chelator. The low charge density of Ra 2+ arising from its large ionic radius weakens its electrostatic binding interactions with chelators, leading to insufficient complex stability in vivo. In this study, we synthesized and evaluated macropa-XL as a novel chelator for 223 Ra. It bears a large 21-crown-7 macrocyclic core and two picolinate pendent groups, which we hypothesized would effectively saturate the large coordination sphere of the Ra 2+ ion. The structural chemistry of macropa-XL was first established with the nonradioactive Ba 2+ ion using X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, which revealed the formation of an 11-coordinate complex in a rare anti pendent-arm configuration. Subsequently, the stability constant of the [Ra(macropa-XL)] complex was determined via competitive cation exchange with 223 Ra and 224 Ra radiotracers and compared with that of macropa, the current state-of-the-art chelator for Ra 2+ . A moderate log K ML value of 8.12 was measured for [Ra(macropa-XL)], which is approximately 1.5 log K units lower than the stability constant of [Ra(macropa)]. This relative decrease in Ra 2+ complex stability for macropa-XL versus macropa was further probed using density functional theory calculations. Additionally, macropa-XL was radiolabeled with 223 Ra, and the kinetic stability of the resulting complex was evaluated in human serum. Furthermore, although macropa-XL could effectively bind 223 Ra under mild conditions, the complex appeared to be unstable to transchelation. Collectively, this study sheds additional light on the chelation chemistry of the exotic Ra 2+ ion and contributes to the small, but growing, number of chelator development efforts for 223 Ra-based TAT.

Quantum Multiple Eigenvalue Gaussian filtered Search: an efficient and versatile quantum phase estimation method

Quantum phase estimation is one of the most powerful quantum primitives. This work proposes a new approach for the problem of multiple eigenvalue estimation: Quantum Multiple Eigenvalue Gaussian filtered Search (QMEGS). QMEGS leverages the Hadamard test circuit structure and only requires simple classical postprocessing. QMEGS is the first algorithm to simultaneously satisfy the following two properties: (1) It can achieve the Heisenberg-limited scaling without relying on any spectral gap assumption. (2) With a positive energy gap and additional assumptions on the initial state, QMEGS can estimate all dominant eigenvalues to ϵ accuracy utilizing a significantly reduced circuit depth compared to the standard quantum phase estimation algorithm. In the most favorable scenario, the maximal runtime can be reduced to as low as log(1/ϵ). This implies that QMEGS serves as an efficient and versatile approach, achieving the best-known results for both gapped and gapless systems. Numerical results validate the efficiency of our proposed algorithm in various regimes.
