Copolyimides With Flexibilizing Groups

Copolymers improved flexibility, processability and melt-flow characteristics. Copolyimide of new type exhibits synergistic improvements in flow properties due to flexibilized diamine-derived units incorported into polymer backbone. Technique produces copolyimides with combination of flexible linkage that cause polymers to exhibit flow properties particularly well suited for use in wide range of products including adhesives, molding resins, laminating resins, dielectric and protective coatings. Improved properties make copolymers especially useful as thermoplastic hot-melt adhesives.

Numerical simulation of convective response to mesoscale forcing

A two-dimensional mesoscale model was used to initialize a two-dimensional cloud model with both mesoscale thermodynamic and dynamic information utilized in the initialization. The Mesoscale-cloud mdoel linkage was used to examine differential convective response due to mesoscale variations for the April 24, 1982 Atmospheric Variability Experiment-Vertical Atmospheric Sounder (AVE-VAS), Case 4. On this day both data analyses and mesoscale model simulations indicated strong variations in thermodynamic and dynamic structure across the panhandle of Texas where a moderately strong convective line formed. Using the cloud model, the current research has shown a preferred area for strong convection to occur due to concomitant mesoscale convergence and mesoscale destabilization of the atmosphere.

Development of passive radiation detectors of improved sensitivity

The future development of a solid track high energy particle detector is discussed. The goal is to improve the sensitivity and lower the threshold of the detector. One most widely used material for such purpose is a plastic commercially known as CR-39. A scheme is presented which involves changing the formula of the monomer, diethylene glycol-bis-allyl carbonate. This is to be accomplished by substituting some heteroatoms for H and substituting sulfur atoms for oxygen in the ether linkages. Use of a new plasticizer to make the etched surface clearer than what has been accomplished as of today is suggested. Possible improvement in acquiring better tracks and increasing the ratio of V sub T/V sub B was planned. This is to be accomplished by changing the composition of the etchants, etching time, and etching temperature.

An evaluation of Turbo Prolog with an emphasis on its application to the development of expert systems

Turbo Prolog is a recently available, compiled version of the programming language Prolog. Turbo Prolog is designed to provide not only a Prolog compiler, but also a program development environment for the IBM Personal Computer family. An evaluation of Turbo Prolog was made, comparing its features to other versions of Prolog and to the community of languages commonly used in artificial intelligence (AI) research and development. Three programs were employed to determine the execution speed of Turbo Prolog applied to various problems. The results of this evaluation demonstrated that Turbo Prolog can perform much better than many commonly employed AI languages for numerically intensive problems and can equal the speed of development languages such as OPS5+ and CLIPS, running on the IBM PC. Applications for which Turbo Prolog is best suited include those which (1) lend themselves naturally to backward-chaining approaches, (2) require extensive use of mathematics, (3) contain few rules, (4) seek to make use of the window/color graphics capabilities of the IBM PC, and (5) require linkage to programs in other languages to form a complete executable image.

On the connection between mare basalts and picritic volcanic glasses

The liquid lines of descent were calculated for low-pressure equilibrium and fractional crystallization of mare basaltic liquids in order to examine the postulated link between picritic volcanic glasses and mare basalts. The models of Longhi (1977, 1982) were modified by including expressions for the armalcolite/ilmenite surface boundary and the Cr-spinel liquidus surface, average molar partition coefficients for armalcolite/liquid pairs, and new experimental data of Longhi and Pan (1987). The results indicate that, with two exceptions, mare basalts and picritic volcanic glasses are not related by simple, linear-surface crystallization processes. However, the compositions of Luna 24 ferrobasalt and Apollo 11 high-K basalts could be closely matched with the lines of liquid descent of certain green and orange picritic glasses, respectively. The calculations also show that the picritic magmas would have fractionated to produce basalts with bulk and mineral compositions similar to those of mare basalts, supporting the hypothesis that mare basalts have fractionated compositions and that the small number of observed linkages between basalts and picritic parents is a consequence of limited sampling.

Experience with synchronous and asynchronous digital control systems

Flight control systems have undergone a revolution since the days of simple mechanical linkages; presently the most advanced systems are full-authority, full-time digital systems controlling unstable aircraft. With the use of advanced control systems, the aerodynamic design can incorporate features that allow greater performance and fuel savings, as can be seen on the new Airbus design and advanced tactical fighter concepts. These advanced aircraft will be and are relying on the flight control system to provide the stability and handling qualities required for safe flight and to allow the pilot to control the aircraft. Various design philosophies have been proposed and followed to investigate system architectures for these advanced flight control systems. One major area of discussion is whether a multichannel digital control system should be synchronous or asynchronous. This paper addressed the flight experience at the Dryden Flight Research Facility of NASA's Ames Research Center with both synchronous and asynchronous digital flight control systems. Four different flight control systems are evaluated against criteria such as software reliability, cost increases, and schedule delays.

Modeling of environmentally induced transients within satellites

A technique is described that allows an estimation of possible spacecraft charging hazards. This technique, called SCREENS (spacecraft response to environments of space), utilizes the NASA charging analyzer program (NASCAP) to estimate the electrical stress locations and the charge stored in the dielectric coatings due to spacecraft encounter with a geomagnetic substorm environment. This information can then be used to determine the response of the spacecraft electrical system to a surface discharge by means of lumped element models. The coupling into the electronics is assumed to be due to magnetic linkage from the transient currents flowing as a result of the discharge transient. The behavior of a spinning spacecraft encountering a severe substorm is predicted using this technique. It is found that systems are potentially vulnerable to upset if transient signals enter through the ground lines.

Quadrennial review of the magnetotail

The findings of research conducted on the magnetotail in the years 1983-1986 are presented. The topics discussed include observations of the distant (between 60 and 220 earth radii) and the near-earth (earthward of 35 earth radii) magnetotail regions by the ISEE l, 2, and 3 and IMP 8 spacecraft, and magnetotail theory and modeling. These studies established the association between substorms and plasmoids in the deep tail and the linkage between the magnetosphere and the ionosphere via field-aligned currents and electric fields.

Articulated figure positioning by multiple constraints

A problem that arises in positioning an articulated figure is the solution of three-dimensional joint positions (kinematics) when goal positions, rather than joint angles, are given. If more than one such goal is to be achieved, the problem is often solved interactively by positioning or solving one component of the linkage, then adjusting another, then redoing the first, and so on. This iterative process is slow and tedious. The paper presents a method that automatically solves multiple simultaneous joint position goals. The user interface offers a six-degree-of-freedom input device to specify joint angles and goal positions interactively. Examples are used to demonstrate the power and efficiency of this method for key-position animation.

Shear flow instability generated by non-homogeneous external forcing

An experiment has been designed and conducted in order to ascertain whether instability waves can be generated by nonhomogeneous forcing, using a biconvex vane located outside the mixing layer whose oscillation was induced by an electromagnetic shaker through a linkage. The vane was oscillated at 20 Hz, and the resulting spectra were computed by a spectrum analyzer. The data are judged to provide an example of instability waves generated solely through nonhomogeneous forcing.

Stabilizing PFAE Against Oxidation

Process makes commercial perfluoroalkylether (PFAE) hydraulic fluid more stable in presence of metals in hot oxidizing atmospheres. Consists of thermal oxidation in presence of catalyst to remove weak links, followed by transformation of newly-created functional groups into phospha-s-triazine linkages, which impart antioxidation and anticorrosion properties. A 66-percent yield of stable PFAE obtained. Fluid used as lubricant, grease, or hydraulic fluid at temperatures from -55 to +300 degree C in presence of metals in oxidizing atmosphere.

Synthesis and characterization of processable polyimides with enhanced thermal stability

Many of the emerging applications of polymers on space vehicles require materials with outstanding thermal stability. These polymers must also be readily processable in order to facilitate their use. The syntheses and polymerization of a cardo dianhydride were investigated. This monomer was prepared via the reaction of N-methyl 4-nitrophthalimide with a cardo diol. Polyimides containing oxyalkylene linkages were studied. The effects of two additional structural modifications on the polymers' properties were investigated. The effects of carrying out the preparation of poly(amic acid)s under non-equilibrium conditions were examined. Approaches that were investigated included the in-situ neutralization of the generated amic acid and its in-situ esterification.

Assessment of the COFSI/MAST I project

The COFS (MAST I) deployer/retractor assembly (DRA) which has a cluster of mechanisms that constitute the collapsible/extensible Mast, contains mechanisms/linkages that deploy and retract. The Mast is a flexible spatial (3D) linkage with hinges that lock into place during deployment to form a truss type structure. It is 60 meters long with repeating sections of two bays. Each bay has alternating diagonals. All joints are single degree-of-freedom hinges, arranged such that the Mast does not rotate during deployment/restow and that deformation energy is minimized. Mispan hinges are incorporated in the diagonals and half of the batten members. The various operational aspects and characteristics of the various mechanisms within the DRA are analyzed. In view of the disadvantages of statical in determinancy as well as the inefficiencies inherent in recirculating gear trains, it is recommended that the bevel gear trains and the bell-crank mechanisms be redesigned.

STIP Symposium on Physical Interpretation of Solar/Interplanetary and Cometary Intervals

The study of travelling interplanetary phenomena has continued over a period of years. The STIP (Study of Travelling Interplanetary Phenomena) Symposium on Physical Interpretation of Solar/Interplanetary and Cometary Intervals was held in Huntsville, Alabama, on May 12-15, 1987, the first of these meetings to be held in the United States. The Symposium's objective was to coordinate and disseminate new science gained from the recent solar-terrestrial and cometary intervals which can be used to better understand the linkage of physical events to the Sun's vagaries (flares, coronal holes, eruptive prominences) from their initial detection to their consequence. Fifty-one presentations were made during the four-day period. Abstracts of these reports are included as Appendix A.

A Generalized Method for Automatic Downhand and Wirefeed Control of a Welding Robot and Positioner

A generalized method for controlling a six degree-of-freedom (DOF) robot and a two DOF positioner used for arc welding operations is described. The welding path is defined in the part reference frame, and robot/positioner joint angles of the equivalent eight DOF serial linkage are determined via an iterative solution. Three algorithms are presented: the first solution controls motion of the eight DOF mechanism such that proper torch motion is achieved while minimizing the sum-of-squares of joint displacements; the second algorithm adds two constraint equations to achieve torch control while maintaining part orientation so that welding occurs in the downhand position; and the third algorithm adds the ability to control the proper orientation of a wire feed mechanism used in gas tungsten arc (GTA) welding operations. A verification of these algorithms is given using ROBOSIM, a NASA developed computer graphic simulation software package design for robot systems development.
