Application of a single laser Doppler system to the measurement of atmospheric winds

The feasibility of employing a single laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) system to remotely measure one-, two-, and three-dimensional velocity components in atmospheric flow fields is presented. A focused continuous wave CO2 laser emitting at the 10.6 mu wavelength is used as the laser source. Scan configurations employed by the LDV system were single-point, two-point, conical, and spiral conical. Test results are presented, which include favorable comparisons of velocity components measured by conventional anemometry and the LDV system. The feasibility using a single-beam LDV employing a conical scan technique for measuring two- and three-dimensional mean winds. Measurements to 300 m in dense fogs showed the ability of the LDV system to operate in dense fogs.

Dual wavelength scanning Doppler velocimeter

A laser Doppler velocimeter is described simultaneously measuring localized orthogonal velocity components in a fluid stream without perturbation of the flowfield. A first pair of beams of a first common wavelength and a second pair of beams of a second common wavelength are derived from a single laser source, directed along a single optical axis. The respective beams of each pair of beams are disposed parallel to the axis, symmetrically about the axis, and are positioned orthogonally about the axis relative to each other. The four beams are then focused upon a selected test volume within the flowfield. Light scattered at that point is collected by an appropriate optical system and focused onto photodetectors which develop electrical output signals commensurate with the orthogonal velocity components at the test point.

Measuring scatter angle from mirrors

Two instrumentation systems are used to measure scatter angle: intensity scatterometer makes small angle measurements on order of 10 arc-minutes; amplitude scatterometer, which uses interferometric principle, measures smaller angles on order of 10 arc-seconds. Both scatterometers use laser sources and can measure into ultraviolet (0.325 micron) wavelengths.

Optical storage in lithium niobate

Holographic storage and retrieval using photorefractive media (electro-optic ferroelectric materials), particularly iron-doped lithium niobate with its enhanced sensitivity, are discussed. Refractive index changes induced by exposure to light render the materials useful for read-write memories and read-write memory simulation. Resolution, dark storage time, write and erase times, reversibility, and noise levels of the materials are examined. The laser source, deflection system, hololens, page composer, and detector array of the holographic memory system are described. High SNR and two orders of magnitude improvement in speed are reported over earlier experimental prototypes, but the system is still too slow to meet practical needs.

Asymmetric photolysis of /RS/-leucine with circularly polarized ultraviolet light

(RS)-leucine in 0.1 M HCl solution has been subjected to photolysis with 212.8-nm right (R-) and left circularly polarized light (LCPL) obtained from a laser source. RCPL preferentially photolyzed the (R)-leucine component and LCPL the (S)-leucine component of the RS substrate. The enantiomeric excess produced were 1.98% for the 59% conversion with RCPL and 2.50% for the 75% conversion with LCPL. These 'equal and opposite' effects represent the second highest enantiomeric enrichments yet reported for an asymmetric photolysis and the first ever reported for a prebiotically important substrate - an amino acid. Implications regarding the origin of optical activity are briefly discussed.

Nephelometer evaluation for measurement of cloud parameters in earth and planetary atmospheres

Initial work was concerned with determining whether the radiation emitted from a laser source could be sufficiently collimated to provide a suitable source for a nephelometer-type instrument. It was necessary to develop a standard scatterer that could be used to evaluate the performance of a nephelometer. The possible use of a gallium arsenide diode as a radiation source also was investigated. The first of these utilized a single lens to focus the light scattered from a target onto a ring detector. The second configuration used reflecting and refracting axicons as optical-system elements. The work performed in each of these areas is described.

L-series satellite spectra in Ti XII and Fe XVI

Transitions in Na-like Ti and Fe ions, which appear as satellites to 2p-3s and 2p-3d transitions in Ne-like ions, were studied. The soft X-ray spectra produced by a focused-laser source and a vacuum-spark device were obtained with the same grazing-incidence spectrograph. Atomic structure calculations agreed with the observed 2p-3s spectral patterns and made possible line identifications in Ti XII and Fe XVI.

Fiber Ring Optical Gyroscope (FROG)

The design, construction, and testing of a one meter diameter fiber ring optical gyro, using 1.57 kilometers of single mode fiber, are described. The various noise components: electronic, thermal, mechanical, and optical, were evaluated. Both dc and ac methods were used. An attempt was made to measure the Earth rotation rate; however, the results were questionable because of the optical and electronic noise present. It was concluded that fiber ring optical gyroscopes using all discrete components have many serious problems that can only be overcome by discarding the discrete approach and adapting an all integrated optic technique that has the laser source, modulator, detector, beamsplitters, and bias element on a single chip.

Laser angle measurement system

The design and fabrication of a laser angle measurement system is described. The instrument is a fringe counting interferometer that monitors the pitch attitude of a model in a wind tunnel. A laser source and detector are mounted above the mode. Interference fringes are generated by a small passive element on the model. The fringe count is accumulated and displayed by a processor in the wind tunnel control room. Optical and electrical schematics, system maintenance and operation procedures are included, and the results of a demonstration test are given.

Velocity Visualization in Gaseous Flows

Techniques yielding simultaneous, multiple point measurements of velocity in reacting or nonreacting flow fields have the potential to significantly impact basic and applied studies of fluid mechanics. Several candidate schemes which could provide such measurement capability were investigated. The concepts utilize laser sources which lead to scattered light which can be monitored by a film based camera or a multielement solid state camera. Velocity measurements in supersonic flows using a novel Doppler modulated fluorescence concept are presented.

Velocity visualization in gaseous flows

Techniques yielding simultaneous, multiple-point measurements of velocity in reacting or nonreacting flow fields have the potential to significantly impact basic and applied studies of fluid mechanics. This research program is aimed at investigating several candidate schemes which could provide such measurement capability. The concepts under study have in common the use of a laser source (to illuminate a column, a grid, a plane or a volume in the flow) and the collection of light at right angles (from Mie scattering, fluorescence, phosphorescence or chemiluminescence) using a multi-element solid-state camera (100 x 100 array of photodiodes). The work will include an overview and a status report of work in progress with particular emphasis on the method of Doppler-modulated absorption.

One of the cavities ('control' cavity) is operated below threshold and assists the longitudinal mode selection and tuning of the other laser. With a minor modification, the same device can operate as an independent two-wavelength laser source.

A redetermination of the succinonitrile-water phase diagram

The phase diagram of the water/succinonitrile system often used in modeling binary metallic alloys is determined experimentally using a laser scattering method. Triply distilled and zone-refined succinonitrile is placed in a jacketed water-cooled vessel with a magnetic mixer and a copper-constantan thermocouple, and the melting point is determined under vacuum and under Ar by observing the response of a photodiode placed opposite a laser source as the chamber is cooled and reheated. Then water is added, and the eutectic and monotectic temperatures and the entire phase diagram are determined under Ar. The results are presented in a table and graph and compared to those of Schreinemakers (1897): significant discrepancies are noted and attributed to impurities in the succinonitrile used by Schreinemakers. The importance of accurate phase diagrams for modeling binary alloys is stressed.
