Site demonstration and performance evaluation of MPC for a large chiller plant with TES for renewable energy integration and grid decarbonization

Thermal energy storage (TES) for a cooling plant is a crucial resource for load flexibility. Traditionally, simple, heuristic control approaches, such as the storage priority control which charges TES during the nighttime and discharges during the daytime, have been widely used in practice, and shown reasonable performance in the past benefiting both the grid and the end-users such as buildings and district energy systems. However, the increasing penetration of renewables changes the situation, exposing the grid to a growing duck curve, which encourages the consumption of more energy in the daytime, and volatile renewable generation which requires dynamic planning. The growing pressure of diminishing greenhouse gas emissions also increases the complexity of cooling TES plant operations as different control strategies may apply to optimize operations for energy cost or carbon emissions. This paper presents a model predictive control (MPC), site demonstration and evaluation results of optimal operation of a chiller plant, TES and behind-meter photovoltaics for a campus-level district cooling system. The MPC was formulated as a mixed-integer linear program for better numerical and control properties. Compared with baseline rule-based controls, the MPC results show reductions of the excess PV power by around 25%, of the greenhouse gas emission by 10%, and of peak electricity demand by 10%.

Perspective—On the Need for Reliability and Safety Studies of Grid-Scale Aqueous Batteries

Li-ion batteries currently dominate electrochemical energy storage for grid-scale applications, but there are promising aqueous battery technologies on the path to commercial adoption. Though aqueous batteries are considered lower risk, they can still undergo problematic degradation processes. This perspective details the degradation that aqueous batteries can experience during normal and abusive operation, and how these processes can even lead to cascading failure. We outline methods for studying these phenomena at the material and single-cell level. Considering reliability and safety studies early in technology development will facilitate translation of emerging aqueous batteries from the lab to the field.

System and component development for long-duration energy storage using particle thermal energy storage

Energy storage, at various scales, will be required to maintain reliable power supply from variable renewable resources, and improve grid resilience. Long-duration energy storage (10-100 h) can substitute baseload coal power generation and increase levels of renewable power supply. Thermal energy storage (TES) has siting flexibility and the ability to store a large capacity of energy, and thus it has the potential to meet the needs of long-duration energy storage. Here, a novel TES system was developed by using solid particles as storage media and charging/discharging electricity from renewable power connected via the electric grid. The particle TES uses low-cost silica sand at 30-40$/Ton that is stable at high temperatures of >1,000 degrees C. Thus, the particle TES system has an overall low storage cost and high thermal-power efficiency. Key components of the system were conceptually designed and modeled for their performance. Conversion of electricity to thermal energy using electric heating can achieve a >98% charging efficiency, and the conversion of thermal energy back to electricity uses an air-Brayton combined power cycle with >52% thermal-to-electricity efficiency at >1,170 degrees C to achieve a >50% roundtrip efficiency after subtracting estimated plant parasitic losses. Laboratory-scale prototypes were fabricated and tested to verify their design approaches and operations relevant to product-scale components.

A Novel Three-Phase Oak Ridge AC / AC Converter for Wireless Mobility Energy Storage System (WMESS) Connectivity

In this study, a novel three-phase Oak Ridge ac to ac converter is introduced for wireless mobility energy storage system (WMESS) applications for grid support or ancillary service applications. The proposed topology can be used in bidirectional operation between ac grid and ac terminals of energy storage (output of the ESS inverter) by accomplishing unity power factor. Inherent merit of the technology is that it can directly merge ac input 60 Hz grid frequency with the high frequency by superimposing them with the Oak Ridge Converter (ORC) and through the wireless coils. Theoretical and simulation results are provided for 10 kW output power. The functionality of the proposed three-phase system is demonstrated with the coupling coils separated by 6 inches of air gap with the input / output of 277 V AC,RMS . The system overall design is presented, and simulation results demonstrate achieving 3% current total harmonic distortion (THD) and 0.99 power factor (PF) at full load of 10 kW wireless power transfer.

On the operational characteristics and economic value of pumped thermal energy storage

Pumped thermal energy storage (PTES) systems use an electrically-driven heat pump to store electricity in the form of thermal energy, and subsequently dispatch the stored thermal energy to generate electricity using a thermodynamic heat engine. Optimal day-ahead operational scheduling and annual value of a PTES system based on Joule-Brayton thermodynamic cycles and two-tank molten salt hot thermal storage is evaluated in this work. Production cost models, which simultaneously optimize commitment and dispatch schedules for an entire set of generators to minimize the cost of satisfying electricity demand, are employed to determine system-optimal operation and day-ahead energy value of the PTES system within each of six hypothetical near-future grid scenarios intended to approximately represent the U.S. Western Interconnection or the Texas Interconnection. Sensitivity to grid scenario (including the contribution of variable renewable energy sources), thermal storage capacity, relative heat pump and heat engine capacities, and startup/shutdown cycling costs are evaluated. PTES energy value and heat engine annual capacity factor increase strongly as the contribution of variable renewable resources increases, heat pump capacity increases relative to heat engine capacity, or PTES cycling costs decrease. Grid scenarios in which the contribution of variable renewable energy is dominated by solar photovoltaics (PV) vs. wind produce inherently different PTES operational patterns. Annual PTES energy value within PV-dominated scenarios increased with storage capacity only up to approximately seven hours of full-load discharge capacity, whereas that within wind-dominated scenarios exhibited a continual increase with storage duration up to at least 16 hours.

A Distributed Control Architecture for Cascaded H-Bridge Converter with Integrated Battery Energy Storage

Cascaded H-bridge topology has been used in grid-tied converters for battery energy storage system due to its modular structure. To fully utilize the converter’s modularity, this paper proposes a hierarchical distributed control architecture that consists of primary control, secondary control and battery state of charge (SOC) balancing control. Primary control ensures accurate current tracking while a distributed secondary control based on consensus algorithm is presented to regulate power sharing among modules and is proved to be stable theoretically. Here, a distributed SOC balancing control is further introduced to improve energy efficiency of battery energy storage system. Finally, the hierarchical distributed control strategy is implemented using hardware controllers and a software platform. Besides, a carrier phase shift control is also implemented to achieve multilevel output voltage and harmonic reduction. The experimental results demonstrate the performance of the proposed control scheme effectively.

Impact of Pendent Ammonium Groups on Solubility and Cycling Charge Carrier Performance in Nonaqueous Redox Flow Batteries

The synthesis, characterization, electrochemical performance, and theoretical modeling of two base-metal charge carrier complexes incorporating a pendent quaternary ammonium group, [Ni(bppn-Me3)][BF4], 3′, and [Fe(PyTRENMe)][OTf]3, 4’, are described. Both complexes were produced in high yield and fully characterized using NMR, IR, and UV–vis spectroscopies as well as elemental analysis and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The solubility of 3′ in acetonitrile showed a 283% improvement over its neutral precursor, whereas the solubility of complex 4’ was effectively unchanged. Cyclic voltammetry indicates an ∼0.1 V positive shift for all waves, with some changes in reversibility depending on the wave. Bulk electrochemical cycling demonstrates that both 3′ and 4’ can utilize the second more negative wave to a degree, whereas 4’ ceases to have a reversible positive wave. Flow cell testing of 3′ and 4’ with Fc as the posolyte reveals little improvement to the cycling performance of 3′ compared with its parent complex, whereas 4’ exhibits reductions in capacity decay when cycling either negative wave. Postcycling CVs indicate that crossover is the likely source of capacity loss in complexes 3, 3′, and 4’ because there is little change in the CV trace. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the ammonium group lowers the HOMO energy in 3′ and 4’, which may impart stability to cycling negative waves while making positive waves less accessible. The incorporation of a positively charged species can improve solubility, stored electron density, and capacity decay depending on the complex, features critical to high energy density redox flow battery performance.

Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians Solar Project

The Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa (the Tribe) implemented its first phase of energy independence through the installation of approximately 520 kW DC of solar photovoltaic (PV) at three tribal buildings: 200kW DC at the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), 300 kW DC at the Health & Wellness Center (Health Clinic), and 20 kW AC at the Chief Blackbird Administration Building (Administration Building). The solar PV systems were integrated with the existing utility grid and can operate independent of the grid using Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in combination with solar and existing back-up gas generators. The BESS also creates resiliency, providing power when the grid is down. All three buildings are essential Tribal buildings.

Storing Electricity with Salt and Iron (CRADA Final Report)

As part of the Cyclotron Road program, Inlyte Energy, Inc. investigated low-cost energy storage for the electricity grid via batteries manufactured from abundant materials. Low-cost energy storage can solve the problem of the intermittency of wind and solar power, thereby allowing these sources of energy to scale more rapidly. The project team explored development of a Na-FeCl 2 battery—which had as its starting redox-active materials the abundant materials table salt (NaCl) and iron—that can operate safely and efficiently over a long lifetime, and be produced at very low-cost. The Na-FeCl 2 battery is architecturally similar to the commercialized Zebra (Na-NiCl 2 ) batteries, which have demonstrated safety, efficiency, and long lifetime. This project explored and assessed key design changes, including the use of planar Na-β’’-alumina solid electrolyte and lower temperatures (~200 °C) with polymer seals aimed at decreasing costs.

Radiation effects on materials for electrochemical energy storage systems

Batteries and electrochemical capacitors (ECs) are of critical importance for applications such as electric vehicles, electric grids, and mobile devices. However, the performance of existing battery and EC technologies falls short of meeting the requirements of high energy/high power and long durability for increasing markets such as the automotive industry, aerospace, and grid-storage utilizing renewable energies. Therefore, improving energy storage materials performance metrics is imperative. In the past two decades, radiation has emerged as a new means to modify functionalities in energy storage materials. There exists a common misconception that radiation with energetic ions and electrons will always cause radiation damage to target materials, which might potentially prevent its applications in electrochemical energy storage systems. But in this review, we summarize recent progress in radiation effects on materials for electrochemical energy storage systems to show that radiation can have both beneficial and detrimental effects on various types of energy materials. Prior work suggests that fundamental understanding toward the energy loss mechanisms that govern the resulting microstructure, defect generation, interfacial properties, mechanical properties, and eventual electrochemical properties is critical. Here, we discuss radiation effects in the following categories: (1) defect engineering, (2) interface engineering, (3) radiation-induced degradation, and (4) radiation-assisted synthesis. We analyze the significant trends and provide our perspectives and outlook on current research and future directions in research seeking to harness radiation as a method for enhancing the synthesis and performance of battery materials.

An Innovative Circuit Breaker for Renewable Power Grids

A key step towards a carbon-neutral future could be reached through dispersed power grids, featuring networks of local-scale renewable energy and battery storage plants. To prevent these power grids from damaging themselves and their surroundings when electrical faults arise, they must be integrated with ‘circuit breakers’, which temporarily interrupt the current flowing through them. However, currently available circuit breakers cannot handle the medium-voltage direct currents best suited for these grids. Through an innovative new circuit breaker design, Steve Schmalz and his colleagues at Eaton Corporation, the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), Virginia Tech and the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), hope that this challenge will soon be overcome.
