Investigating Effects of Controlled Flights through Fast-Time Simulation

Departure flights at major U.S. airports are often subject to Traffic Management Initiatives to mitigate congestion and delay due to demand-capacity imbalances. These controlled flights can lead to inefficiency and delay on the airport surface. The integrated arrival, departure, and surface traffic management capabilities developed by NASA’s Airspace Technology Demonstration 2 (ATD-2) sub-project provide enhanced operational efficiency and predictability of flight operations through data exchange and integration, surface metering, and automated coordination of release time of controlled flights for overhead stream insertion. This paper evaluates the impacts of controlled flights on airport performance and assesses the ATD-2 benefits of pushback hold advisories for both controlled and non-controlled flights using fast-time simulation for Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

The New Millennium Program: Fast-Track Procurements

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA'a) New Millennium Program (NMP) has embarked on a technology flight-validation demonstration program to enable the kinds of missions that NASA envisions for the 21st century. Embedded in the program is the concept of rapid mission development supported by a fast-track procurement process.

Preliminary Analysis of Separation Standards for Urban Air Mobility using Unmitigated Fast-Time Simulation

This research provides a preliminary analysis of various separation standards for Urban Air Mobility (UAM) operations. This study focuses on understanding and analyzing potential conflicts between UAM flights and conflicts between UAM and conventional aircraft. Fast-time simulations are conducted with a projected high-density of UAM traffic scenario and historical conventional non-UAM traffic flying under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) or Visual Flight Rules (VFR) in Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) airspace. The conflicts are analyzed by examining losses of separation and near mid-air collisions of UAM flights and unmitigated risk of collision. A set of varied separation standards are used to investigate the impact of the new UAM operations on safety. The preliminary conflict analysis results will help inform separation standards development and in airspace and route design activities for future UAM operations.

Landau Damping of Transverse Waves in the Exosphere by Fast Particle Fluxes

We have investigated the Landau damping of transverse waves propagating in the thermal exospheric plasma, by fast particle fluxes which also exist in these regions. The most intense non-thermal fluxes so far detected are those of the auroral producing electrons and protons measured by McIlwain. We find that these fluxes may considerably damp the propagation of whistler modes through some regions. The damping of hydromagnetic waves in the exosphere by this mechanism is negligible.

New anemometer has fast response, measures dynamic pressure directly

A simple anemometer having a fast response to high frequency wind fluctuations by direct measurement of two drag-force components in orthogonal planes is described. It may be used to determine wind profiles to extensive heights and would be helpful in takeoff and landing of light planes.

Inductor flyback characteristic gives voltage regulator fast response

Voltage regulator alternately connects an inductor in parallel and in series with the input voltage source. This flyback voltage regulator provides a regulated dc voltage to varying loads from a varying dc supply and gives fast response to load and supply changes.
