Concentrator enhanced solar arrays design study

The analysis and preliminary design of a 25 kW concentrator enhanced lightweight flexible solar array are presented. The study was organized into five major tasks: (1) assessment and specification of design requirements; (2) mechanical design; (3) electric design; (4) concentrator design; and (5) cost projection. The tasks were conducted in an iterative manner so as to best derive a baseline design selection. The objectives of the study are discussed and comparative configurations and mass data on the SEP (Solar Electric Propulsion) array design, concentrator design options and configuration/mass data on the selected concentrator enhanced solar array baseline design are presented. Design requirements supporting design analysis and detailed baseline design data are discussed. The results of the cost projection analysis and new technology are also discussed.

Resolution enhanced sound detecting apparatus

An apparatus is described for enhancing the resolution of a sound detector of the type which includes an acoustic mirror for focusing sound from an object onto a microphone to enable the determination of the location from which the sound arises. The enhancement apparatus includes an enclosure which surrounds the space between the mirror and microphone, and contains a gas heavier than air, such as Freon, through which sound moves slower and therefore with a shorter wavelength than in air, so that a mirror of given size has greater resolving power. An acoustically transparent front wall of the enclosure which lies forward of the mirror, can include a pair of thin sheets with pressured air between them, to form an end of the region of heavy gas into a concave shape.

Digital enhancement of computerized axial tomograms

A systematic evaluation has been conducted of certain digital image enhancement techniques performed in image space. Three types of images have been used, computer generated phantoms, tomograms of a synthetic phantom, and axial tomograms of human anatomy containing images of lesions, artificially introduced into the tomograms. Several types of smoothing, sharpening, and histogram modification have been explored. It has been concluded that the most useful enhancement techniques are a selective smoothing of singular picture elements, combined with contrast manipulation. The most useful tool in applying these techniques is the gray-scale histogram.

Hydrogen over helium enhancement in successive solar flare particle events from the same active region

An analysis of all of the identified solar-flare-associated energetic particle events in the 1972-1975 period observed with instruments aboard the IMP 7 and IMP 8 satellites has revealed at least eight occasions when more than one particle-producing flare occurred within the same McMath active plage region during its transit of the visible solar disk. A strong tendency for second flares to produce hydrogen over helium (p/alpha) enhanced energetic particle fluxes when compared with the first flare in the 1.8-10.0 MeV per nucleon range emerged in these multiflare regions. The p/alpha enhancement is apparently transient, and for flares separated by at least about 100 hours the p/alpha ratio tends toward its preflare value. It is suggested that the substrate plasma in an active region may be enriched prior to a flare in elements heavier than hydrogen and the composition may not be significantly altered during subsequent acceleration, escape, and propagation. Thus, the preflare history of the active region must be added to the list of factors influencing observed solar-particle-event composition.

Contamination enhanced electrostatic discharge mechanisms

The two problems of enhanced electrostatic discharge (ESD) and contamination are discussed. It is shown that there is a synergistic relationship between them such that one enhances the probability of occurance of the other. The action of both provides substantially more deleterious affects than the effects of both separately. Mechanisms for such a relationship are discussed as well as application to large advanced technology systems.

Efficiency enhancement of coupled-cavity TWT's through cavity resonance tapering

The paper examines efficiency enhancement of coupled-cavity traveling-wave tube (TWT) through cavity resonance tapering. Beam-wave resynchronization through circuit velocity reduction is used for TWT efficiency enhancement, with circuit velocity reduction in coupled cavity TWT's accomplished through period tapering. However, the amount of the latter is limited by the stability considerations, so that beyond a critical value of velocity reduction, the tube may be subject to zero drive oscillations originating in the velocity taper region. The coupled-cavity resonance tapering allows the velocity reduction to continue beyond the limit of stable period tapering, and it is accomplished by a gradual reduction in the cavity resonance frequency, with the period and the circuit bandwidth unchanged. The advantages of cavity resonance tapering vs period tapering are discussed, and test data are presented with the results of large-signal computer calculations. It is shown that cavity resonance tapering can produce efficiencies as period tapering without incurring the same risk of lower band-edge oscillations.

Simultaneous ground-satellite observations of Pi 2 magnetic pulsations and their high frequency enhancement

Pi 2 magnetic pulsations are a frequent occurrence at the earth's surface and have been shown to be clearly correlated with substorm expansion onset. These pulsations are also observed in space at synchronous orbit at the same time as they are seen on the ground at the satellite conjugate point. This brief report describes three days in 1969 on which Pi 2 magnetic pulsations were simultaneously observed at the synchronous satellite ATS 1 and at Tungsten, N.W.T., Canada, near the foot of the ATS 1 magnetic field line. These Pi 2 bursts all exhibit the characteristic waveform and frequency, as well as an 0.3 Hz enhancement, at both locations. This high frequency enhancement appears to be an integral part of Pi 2 bursts both on the surface and at synchronous orbit and should be considered in the development of models of generation mechanisms.

Enhancement of peptide bond formation by polyribonucleotides on clay surfaces in fluctuating environments

The selective effects of polyribonucleotides on the formation of glycine peptide bonds in glycine on clay surfaces are investigated as a model for a template mechanism for the effects of polynucleotides on peptide bond formation. Free oligoglycine yields were determined for the cycling reaction of glycine in the presence and absence of clay and polyribonucleotides or polydeoxyribonucleotides. The polyribonucleotides are observed to lead to increases of up to fourfold increases in oligoglycine formed, with greater enhancements for poly-G nucleotides than for poly-A, poly-U and poly-C, indicating a codonic bias. Polydeoxyribonucleotides are found to provide no enhancement in peptide formation rates, and yields were also greatly reduced in the absence of clay. A mechanism for peptide synthesis is proposed which involves the activation of glycine on the clay surface, followed by the formation of esters between glycine and the 2-prime OH groups of the polyribonucleotide and peptide bonds between adjacent amino acyl esters. It is pointed out that if this mechanism is correct, it may provide a basis for a direct template translation process, which would produce a singlet genetic code.

The development of a magnetically enhanced hydrogen gas dissociation

Application of a dc magnetic field on an RF hydrogen gas dissociator led to the development of a more efficient source of atoms for hydrogen masers. The influence of the applied magnetic field on the plasma and some details of the resulting enhancement of the dissociation efficiency are discussed. Ways that this improved efficiency can result in the enhancement of the operation and field life of hydrogen masers, as well as aid the development of spaceborne masers, are considered.

Abundance enhancements in cosmic rays produced by collisionless shocks

It is shown that shocks preferentially accelerate partially ionized heavy elements over protons. Within the framework of a previously published model of injection, the spectra of different ion species are calculated from thermal to ultrarelativistic energies. For typical astrophysical parameters, the predicted enhancement is in qualitative agreement with observations for a 10 to the 6th K preshock plasma; ions with Z greater than 10 are enhanced by about an order of magnitude or so. The continuing increase with energy of the heavy-element abundances into the air-shower regime is discussed.

Enhanced orbital geochemical images by the Laplacian subtraction method

Orbital geochemical studies of the moon based on X-ray fluorescence and gamma-ray spectroscopy have been successful. There are, however, difficulties if geologic units or other features to be investigated are too small. Investigations have been conducted with the objective to improve with the aid of image enhancement methods both spatial resolution and contrast for the geochemical experiments. A description is provided of the Laplacian subtraction method of enhancement. It was found that the application of a least-squares version of this method to the Mg/Al ratios obtained by orbital X-ray fluorescence improved geochemical images considerably. The spatial resolution increased by about a factor of 2 and the contrast also increased. The Laplacian of an image can also be used to detect very small 'hot' or 'cold' spots in an image.

Damping enhancement and attitude control of large space structures

Enhancement of modal damping in large space structures (LSS) is highly desirable and sometimes essential for the stability of the primary attitude control system. This paper considers the use of a number of Annular Momentum Control Devices (AMCD's) for damping enhancement in LSS. It is proved that the closed-loop system is stable in the sense of Lyapunov. Sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability are also obtained.

Electron mobility enhancement in epitaxial multilayer Si-Si/1-x/Ge/x/ alloy films on /100/Si

Enhanced Hall-effect mobilities have been measured in epitaxial (100)-oriented multilayer n-type Si/Si(1-x)Ge(x) films grown on single-crystal Si substrates by chemical vapor deposition. Mobilities from 20 to 40% higher than that of epitaxial Si layers and about 100% higher than that of epitaxial SiGe layers on Si were measured for the doping range 8 x 10 to the 15th to 10 to the 17th/cu cm. No mobility enhancement was observed in multilayer p-type (100) films and n-type (111)-oriented films. Experimental studies included the effects upon film properties of layer composition, total film thickness, doping concentrations, layer thickness, and growth temperature.

Effect of scene illumination conditions on digital enhancement techniques of multispectral scanner LANDSAT images

Two sets of MSS/LANDSAT data with solar elevation ranging from 22 deg to 41 deg were used at the Image-100 System to implement the Eliason et alii technique for extracting the topographic modulation component. An unsupervised cluster analysis was used to obtain an average brightness image for each channel. Analysis of the enhanced imaged shows that the technique for extracting topographic modulation component is more appropriated to MSS data obtained under high sun elevation ngles. Low sun elevation increases the variance of each cluster so that the average brightness doesn't represent its albedo proprties. The topographic modulation component applied to low sun elevation angle damages rather than enhance topographic information. Better results were produced for channels 4 and 5 than for channels 6 and 7.
