A theoretical study of the effects of interacting grain boundaries on electron-beam-induced currents

The influence of several grain boundaries on the electron-beam-induced current in polycrystalline silicon is investigated. The simple geometry contemplated here, consisting of two plane parallel grain boundaries possessing different effective, albeit constant, surface recombination velocities, intersecting a planar junction at right angles allows for an exact solution of the corresponding boundary value problem. It is shown that if the distance between the grain boundaries w becomes less than the diffusion length for minority carriers L within the grain, the grain boundary with the smaller effective recombination velocity becomes less and less visible the smaller the ratio w/L.

Current understanding and issues on electron beam injection in space

The status of the physics understanding involved in electron beam injection in space is reviewed. The paper examines our understanding of beam plasma interactions and their associated wave and energized particle spectra of the processes involved in the beam plasma discharge, and of the vehicle charge neutralization. 'Strawman' models are presented for comparison with experimental observations.

Pulsed electron beam emission in space

During the Spacelab-2 mission of July 1985, electron beams (1 keV, 50-150 mA) pulsed at ELF and VLF frequencies were emitted from the Space Shuttle Orbiter. The wave fields generated by the beam were monitored by a Plasma Diagnostics Package which was released as a free-flying subsatellite during a six hour period. Measurements of the Orbiter potential and the return current during beam emissions were obtained from a Charge and Current Probe mounted in the payload bay.

Self-rectifying electron beam melter for pendant-drop containerless processing

A self-rectifying electron beam melting technique is described. Utilizing an ac power supply, in contrast to the more usual dc supply, the in situ self-rectifying approach offers a simple and very inexpensive means of producing metallic pendant drops for use in containerless melt-processing experiments.

ELF waves and ion resonances produced by an electron beam emitting rocket in the ionosphere

Results are reported from the ECHO-6 electron-beam-injection experiment, performed in the auroral-zone ionosphere on March 30, 1983 using a sounding rocket equipped with two electron guns and a free-flying plasma-diagnostics instrument package. The data are presented in extensive graphs and diagrams and characterized in detail. Large ELF wave variations, superposed on the strong beam-sector-directed quasi-dc component, are observed in the 100-eV beam-induced plasma when the beam is injected in a transverse spiral, but not when it is injected upward parallel to the magnetic-field line. ELF activity is found to be suppressed whenever the rocket passed through field lines with auroral activity, suggesting that the waves are produced by the interaction of the beam potentials, plasma currents, and return currents neutralizing the accelerator payload.

Texture-Induced Anisotropy in an Inconel 718 Alloy Deposited Using Electron Beam Freeform Fabrication

A test block of Inconel (IN) 718 was fabricated using electron beam freeform fabrication (EBF(sup 3)) to examine how the EBF(sup 3) deposition process affects the microstructure, crystallographic texture, and mechanical properties of IN 718. Tests revealed significant anisotropy in the elastic modulus for the as-deposited IN 718. Subsequent tests were conducted on specimens subjected to a heat treatment designed to decrease the level of anisotropy. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) was used to characterize crystallographic texture in the as-deposited and heat treated conditions. The anisotropy in the as-deposited condition was strongly affected by texture as evidenced by its dependence on orientation relative to the deposition direction. Heat treatment resulted in a significant improvement in modulus of the EBF(sup 3) product to a level nearly equivalent to that for wrought IN 718 with reduced anisotropy; reduction in texture through recrystallization; and production of a more homogeneous microstructure.

The quasi-linear relaxation of thick-target electron beams in solar flares

The effects of quasi-linear interactions on thick-target electron beams in the solar corona are investigated. Coulomb collisions produce regions of positive gradient in electron distributions which are initially monotonic decreasing functions of energy. In the resulting two-stream instability, energy and momentum are transferred from electrons to Langmuir waves and the region of positive slope in the electron distribution is replaced by a plateau. In the corona, the timescale for this quasi-linear relaxation is very short compared to the collision time. It is therefore possible to model the effects of quasi-linear relaxation by replacing any region of positive slop in the distribution by a plateau at each time step, in such a way as to conserve particle number. The X-ray bremsstrahlung and collisional heating rate produced by a relaxed beam are evaluated. Although the analysis is strictly steady state, it is relevant to the theoretical interpretation of hard X-ray bursts with durations of the order of a few seconds (i.e., the majority of such bursts).

Strong interaction of low-power electron beams with the ionosphere

The late stages of the beam-plasma instability are not yet completely understood. A better knowledge of the evolution of the beam is necessary to explain the results of the electron beam experiments carried out in the ionosphere. An alternative to the complete stabilization by quasi-linear (QL) diffusion is the parametric 'stabilization'. In this case the beam remains unstable for very long distances, while retaining its 'hot-beam' characteristics. A recent flight provides data that indicate the relevance of this mechanism in the evolution of the beam-plasma instability.

Control of Space-Based Electron Beam Free Form Fabrication

Engineering a closed-loop control system for an electron beam welder for space-based additive manufacturing is challenging. For earth and space based applications, components must work in a vacuum and optical components become occluded with metal vapor deposition. For extraterrestrial applications added components increase launch weight, increase complexity, and increase space flight certification efforts. Here we present a software tool that closely couples path planning and E-beam parameter controls into the build process to increase flexibility. In an environment where data collection hinders real-time control, another approach is considered that will still yield a high quality build.
