Computer program documentation: Raw-to-processed SINDA program (RTOPHS) user's guide

Use of the Raw to Processed SINDA(System Improved Numerical Differencing Analyzer) Program, RTOPHS, which provides a means of making the temperature prediction data on binary HSTFLO and HISTRY units generated by SINDA available to engineers in an easy to use format, is discussed. The program accomplishes this by reading the HISTRY unit and according to user input instructions, the desired times and temperature prediction data are extracted and written to a word addressable drum file.

Design and development of a hard tube flexible radiator system

The construction and operational characteristics of an extended life flexible radiator panel is described. The radiator panel consists of a flexible fin laminate and stainless steel flow tubes designed for a 90 percent probability of surviving 5 years in an Earth orbit micrometeoroid environment. The radiator panel rejects 1.1 kW sub t of heat into an environmental sink temperature of 0 F. Total area is 170 square feet and the panel extends 25 feet in the fully deployed position. When retracted the panel rolls onto a 11.5 inch diameter by 52 inch long storage drum, for a final stored diameter of 22 inches.

Electric vehicle motors and controllers

Improved and advanced components being developed include electronically commutated permanent magnet motors of both drum and disk configuration, an unconventional brush commutated motor, and ac induction motors and various controllers. Test results on developmental motors, controllers, and combinations thereof indicate that efficiencies of 90% and higher for individual components, and 80% to 90% for motor/controller combinations can be obtained at rated power. The simplicity of the developmental motors and the potential for ultimately low cost electronics indicate that one or more of these approaches to electric vehicle propulsion may eventually displace presently used controllers and brush commutated dc motors.

A comparison of some static and dynamic mechanical properties of 18 x 5.5 and 49 x 17 type 7 aircraft tires as measured by three test facilities

The properties were measured during static, slow rolling, and high-speed tests, and comparisons were made between data as acquired on indoor drum dynamometers and on an outdoor test track. In addition, mechanical properties were also obtained from scale model tires and compared with corresponding properties from full-size tires. While the tests covered a wide range of tire properties, results seem to indicate that speed effects are not large, scale models may be used for obtaining some but not all tire properties, and that predictive equations developed in NASA TR R-64 are still useful in estimating most mechanical properties.

Screening of high temperature adhesives for large area bonding

High temperature-resistant adhesive systems were screened for processability, mechanical and physical properties, operational capability at 589 K (600 F), and the ability to produce large area bonds of high quality in fabricating Space Shuttle components. The adhesives consisted primarily of polyimide systems, including FM34B-18, NR-150B2 (DuPont), PMR-15, LARC-13, LARC-160, Thermid 600, and AI-1130L (AMOCA). The processing studies included preparation of polyimide resins, fabrication of film adhesives, development of lay-up and cure procedures, fabrication of honeycomb sandwich panels, and fabrication of mid-plane bonded panels in joints up to 30.5 cm (12 in.) wide. The screening program included tests for tack and drape properties, reticulation and filleting characteristics, ability to produce void-free or low porosity bonds in mid-plane bonded panels, out-time stability, lap shear strength, climbing drum peel strength, and glass transition temperature (Tg). This paper describes the processing methods developed and the test results.

Cosmic ray detector for high energy iron nuclei

An experiment to directly measure the differential energy spectra of nuclei with charge between 15-28 inclusive with a balloon borne instrument is presented. A High Energy Gas Cerenkov Spectrometer (HEGCS) is described, and consists of a 3 m diam drum 4.5 m tall containing three light diffusion chambers. A hodoscopic array of scintillators emit light into the top and bottom light chambers which serve for track recordings of the trajectory and charge of incident cosmic rays. A center chamber pressure vessel, the HEGCS, has a 4.0 m sr and a threshold of 50 GeV/amu. The hexagonal array scintillators have 24 elements/array feeding photomultiplier tubes at the vertices between the scintillators, with other PMTs located around the top and bottom chambers to capture escaped scintillator light. The HEGCS is filled with freon-12, with reflective paint on the inner surface to convert UV Cerenkov photons into visible photons near 425 nm.

Flexible radiator system: Executive summary

A full scale prototype flexible radiator panel was designed, built and tested. The panel, has approximately 173 sq ft of radiating area and is designed to reject 1.33 kW of heat to a 0 F sink with a 100 F fluid inlet. The panel is constructed from a flexible Teflon/silver mesh fin surrounding 1/8 inch Teflon tubes. The prototype panel is stowed on a 10 inch diameter by 4 foot wide drum. (It rolls up to a diameter of 17 inches when fully stowed). Deployment of the soft tube prototype is via two four inch diameter Kevlar/Mylar inflation tubes with flat springs incorporated in each tube. Nitrogen is normally used for the deployment with approximately 1 psi required. The springs retract the panels when the inflation tubes are deflated. Another method of deployment available for the soft tube flexible is a motor driven deployable boom. This eliminates the need for expendables when the panel area is varied during the mission for heat load control. The soft tube panel is designed for a 90% probability of no punctured tube in a 30 day mission. The acceptable working fluids for this soft tube flexible are Coolanol 15, Coolanol 20 and Glycol/water (a eutectic mixture).

Trajectories and orbital maneuvers for the ISEE-3/ICE comet mission

The ISEE-3/ICE spacecraft, (launched in 1978), and expected to obtain the first measurements of comet Giacobinni-Zinner in September 1985, has undertaken a combination of propulsive maneuvers, lunar swing-bys, and solar perturbations to produce its present trajectory profile. ISEE-3 is a drum-shaped, spin-stabilized spacecraft equipped with a redundant pair of high-resolution sun sensors, a medium-gain S-band antenna, a hydrazine propulsion system and a science experiment payload. After being placed into a sun-earth libration halo orbit in late 1978, ISEE-3 was retargeted to the geomagnetotail in mid-1982 and became the first spacecraft to explore the geomagnetic tail between 80 and 237 earth radii in 1983. These types of maneuvers may prove important for future scientific missions planned as follow-ons to ISEE-3/ICE, such as a joint NASA/ISAS project spacecraft scheduled for Shuttle launch in 1991, and a possible encounter with two comets in 1996 anad 1998.

LANDSAT 4 investigations of Thematic Mapper and Multispectral Scanner applications

Structural and stratigraphic characteristics of the Drum Mountains in Utah were obtained using LANDSAT 5 TM data that were digitally enhanced using band ratioing, principal components analysis, and spatial filtering techniques. Color ratioing composite images proved most useful for distinguishing between and identifying exposure of hyroxly bearing hydrothermally altered inclusive rocks and bleached contact metamorphic rocks dominated by calc-silicate mineral assemblages. The amount and detail of geologic information interpreted from TM images is more significant than that from MSS and in geologic maps. Enhanced LANDSAT 5 TM data also identified and mapped hydrothermal alteration and distinguished between altered and unaltered limonitic assemblages in the Tonopath, Nevada quadrangle.

What Is Being Done to Control Motion Sickness?

AFT (Autogenic Feedback Training) involves practicing a series of mental exercises to speed up or slow down the control of autonomic activity. This produces a reduced tendency for autonomic activity levels to diverge from baseline (at rest) under stressful motion-sickness-inducing conditions. Subjects conditions. Subjects engaged in applying AFT exercises are required to closely monitor their own bodily sensations during motion-sickness-eliciting tests. These tests include the Coriolis Sickness Susceptibility Index (CSSI), which consists of sitting a subject into a rotating chair that moves at various speeds while a visual background turns at differing speeds and directions, and the Vertical Acceleration Rotation Device (VARD) test, which involves the placing of a subject in a drum that moves in an upward and downward motion until he or she is sick, while simultaneously monitoring the subject's vital signs. These tests provide investigators with evidence of slight changes in autonomic activities such as increases in heart rate, skin temperature, and sweat. All of these symptoms occur in subjects that experience bodily weakness or discomfort with the onset of motion sickness.
