K-anonymity applied to the energy grid of things distributed energy resource management system

Smart grid infrastructure relies on information exchange between multiple actors in order to ensure system reliability. These actors include but are not limited to smart loads, grid control, and energy management technologies. As information exchange between these actors is susceptible to cyber-attacks, security and privacy issues are indispensable to ensure a reliable and stable grid. This position paper proposes a privacypreserving, trust-augmented secure scheme for a smart grid implementation.

State Regulatory Opportunities to Advance Distributed Energy Resource Aggregations in Wholesale Markets

The report discusses how state regulators can promote the participation of DERs in wholesale markets, including complementary actions that they can take to support Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Order 2222 implementation. It also summarizes wholesale market operators’ Order 2222 compliance and associated compliance challenges along with potential state regulator roles. The report identifies actions that state regulators can take to accelerate DER aggregations providing grid services.

Secure Distributed Energy Resource Communications (sDERC)

The slides will be presented at a DOE CESER Peer Review for the Risk Management Tools and Technology (RMT) that provide an overview of the sDERC project. The slides discuss the project plan for this new project and how the results will be demonstrated at the conclusion of this project. The peer review is scheduled for August 27-29.

Transactive Energy Systems: The Market-based Coordination of Distributed Energy Resources

This paper synthesizes a unifying framework that captures a large class of transactive energy systems studied in the literature. The framework consists of four key elements: agent preferences, control decisions, information structure, and solution concept. Among them, agent preference specifies the preferred outcome by each agent and models the conflict of interest in decision making. Control decision specifies the set of decisions for each agent to maximize its payoff. Information structure describes the information available to each agent before it makes a decision. Solution concept encodes the rationality assumptions of each agent in the system. These elements are important in identifying and distinguishing different transactive energy systems. In this paper, we use them to analyze a number of important ones, including the competitive equilibrium, Stackelberg game, reverse Stackelberg game, and mechanism design. Each class of these problems is formulated as a special case of the proposed transactive energy systems. Their connections and differences are discussed. Available tools and results for each category of problems are surveyed.

Real time feedback-based optimization of distributed energy resources

An example device includes a processor configured to receive a plurality of voltage values representing respective voltage magnitudes at voltage nodes in a first portion of a power system and determine, for each voltage node, a respective value of first and second voltage-constraint coefficients. The processor is also configured to receive a power value corresponding to a connection point of the first portion of the power system with a second portion of the power system and determine for the connection point, a respective value of first and second power-constraint coefficients. The processor is also configured to cause at least one energy resource connected to the first portion of the power system to modify an output power of the at least one energy resource based on the value of the first and second voltage-constraint coefficients for each voltage node and the value of the first and second power-constraint coefficients.

Power system restoration incorporating diverse distributed energy resources

An example system includes an aggregator configured to receive a service collaboration request and iteratively determine, based on minimum and maximum power values for DERs under its management, an optimized operation schedule. The aggregator may also be configured to iteratively determine, based on the optimized operation schedule, an estimated flexibility range for devices under its management and output an indication thereof. The system may also include a power management unit (PMU) configured to iteratively receive the indication and determine, based on a network model that includes the estimated flexibility range, a reconfiguration plan and an overall optimized operation schedule for the network. The PMU may also be configured to iteratively cause reconfiguration of the network based on the plan. The PMU and aggregator may also be configured to iteratively, at a fast timescale, cause energy resources under their management to modify operation based on the overall optimized operation schedule.
