Low-cost data analysis systems for processing multispectral scanner data

A research-oriented data analysis system was developed which is used for evaluating complex remote sensor systems and for development of techniques for application of remotely sensed data. Some modular hardware components were developed which may be added to one's existing facilities to establish a low-cost data analysis system for processing multispectral scanner data. Software modules which are compatible with small general purpose digital computers process and analyze remote sensor data, and convert it to information needed by users. The software modules are written in FORTRAN IV language for ease of transfer to other computer systems. The basic hardware and software system requirements are defined for some low-cost data analysis systems consisting of an image display system, a small general purpose digital computer, and an output recording device. The hardware modules consist of: a LANDSAT MSS data reformatting program; a series of spectral pattern recognition programs required to generate surface classification maps and tabular information; programs to convert computer generated maps from image space to a geographically referenced base; programs to extract data and irregularly shaped areas and to produce thematic maps of the designated areas; and programs to tabulate acreages of selected classification categories. Some off-the-shelf, inexpensive digital image display systems are described.

Phototelevision data display methods

Phototelevision devices (PTD) used to graphically display the results obtained from computerized data processing are described. The possibility and specifics of the use of PTD with a digital computer are presented. Requirements are formulated, and the principles used in the design of the PTD are given. General problems in interfacing the PTD and the digital computer are discussed. Recommendations are included.

A least mean squares CUBIC algorithm for on-line differential of sampled analog signals

A digital computer algorithm is developed for on-line time differentiation of sampled analog voltage signals. The derivative is obtained by employing a least mean squares technique. The recursive algorithm results in a considerable reduction in computer time compared to a complete new solution of the normal equations each time a new data point is accepted. Implementation of the algorithm on a digital computer is discussed. Examples are simulated on a DEC PDP-8 computer.

Development and modification of a digital program for final approach to landing

The development and implementation of a dynamic digital computer simulator which may be used to evaluate aircraft performance when operating under the control and guidance of various navigation, landing, and flight control systems are discussed. The digital computer program may be used to simulate and evaluate the relationships and interactions between various factors such as the microwave landing system, avionics receivers and onboard processors, aircraft aerodynamics, aircraft automatic control systems, control surfaces, and wind and other external effects. The models used to represent aircraft aerodynamics, control system and control surfaces; weather and wind effects; and the microwave landing system are described. Example results are presented for a simulation of a Boeing 737 using two sample control systems while subjected to various atmospheric conditions and microwave landing system errors. The limitations and performance capabilities of these control systems are discussed in terms of their ability to utilize the microwave landing system signal.

A search for sulfide-bearing areas using LANDSAT-1 data and digital image-processing techniques

Two experiments were conducted using LANDSAT-1 multispectral scanner data to identify ground features that are indicators of sulfide-bearing rock. A nearby known sulfide deposit was used as a control. In the first experiment, false-color composites were examined visually to locate possible favorable areas; in the second, favorable areas were classified by digital-computer processing. The results of the experiment show that outcrops of hydrothermally altered and mineralized rock can be identified from LANDSAT-1 data under favorable conditions. The empirical method of digital-computer classification of the multispectral scanner data was relatively unrefined and rapid. The five mineralized prospecting sites identified are in locations that the geologist would not have selected as favorable on the basis of geologic knowledge or photogeologic interpretation at the time of the investigation.

Thermal radiation view factor: Methods, accuracy and computer-aided procedures

The computer aided thermal analysis programs which predicts the result of predetermined acceptable temperature range prior to stationing of these orbiting equipment in various attitudes with respect to the Sun and the Earth was examined. Complexity of the surface geometries suggests the use of numerical schemes for the determination of these viewfactors. Basic definitions and standard methods which form the basis for various digital computer methods and various numerical methods are presented. The physical model and the mathematical methods on which a number of available programs are built are summarized. The strength and the weaknesses of the methods employed, the accuracy of the calculations and the time required for computations are evaluated. The situations where accuracies are important for energy calculations are identified and methods to save computational times are proposed. Guide to best use of the available programs at several centers and the future choices for efficient use of digital computers are included in the recommendations.

IPCS implications for future supersonic transport aircraft

The Integrated Propulsion Control System (IPCS) demonstrates control of an entire supersonic propulsion module - inlet, engine afterburner, and nozzle - with an HDC 601 digital computer. The program encompasses the design, build, qualification, and flight testing of control modes, software, and hardware. The flight test vehicle is an F-111E airplane. The L.H. inlet and engine will be operated under control of a digital computer mounted in the weapons bay. A general description and the current status of the IPCS program are given.

A thin-shock-layer solution for nonequilibrium, inviscid hypersonic flows in earth, Martian, and Venusian atmospheres

An approximate inverse solution is presented for the nonequilibrium flow in the inviscid shock layer about a vehicle in hypersonic flight. The method is based upon a thin-shock-layer approximation and has the advantage of being applicable to both subsonic and supersonic regions of the shock layer. The relative simplicity of the method makes it ideally suited for programming on a digital computer with a significant reduction in storage capacity and computing time required by other more exact methods. Comparison of nonequilibrium solutions for an air mixture obtained by the present method is made with solutions obtained by two other methods. Additional cases are presented for entry of spherical nose cones into representative Venusian and Martian atmospheres. A digital computer program written in FORTRAN language is presented that permits an arbitrary gas mixture to be employed in the solution. The effects of vibration, dissociation, recombination, electronic excitation, and ionization are included in the program.

A biplane roentgen videometry system for dynamic /60 per second/ studies of the shape and size of circulatory structures, particularly the left ventricle.

A roentgen-television digital-computer technique and a display system developed for dynamic circulatory structure studies are described. Details are given for a videoroentgenographic setup which is used for obtaining biplane roentgen silhouettes of a left ventricle. A 60 per sec measurement of the shape and volume of angiographically outlined cardiac chambers can be made by this technique along with simultaneous ECG, pressure, and flow measurements accessible for real-time digital computer processing and analysis.
