Hardware acceleration for HPS algorithms in two and three dimensions

We provide a flexible, open-source framework for hardware acceleration, namely massively-parallel execution on general-purpose graphics processing units (GPUs), applied to the hierarchical Poincaré–Steklov (HPS) family of algorithms for building fast direct solvers for linear elliptic partial differential equations. To take full advantage of the power of hardware acceleration, we propose two variants of HPS algorithms to improve performance on two- and three-dimensional problems. In the two-dimensional setting, we introduce a novel recomputation strategy that minimizes costly data transfers to and from the GPU; in three dimensions, we modify and extend the adaptive discretization technique of Geldermans and Gillman [1] to greatly reduce peak memory usage. We provide an open-source implementation of these methods written in JAX, a high-level accelerated linear algebra package, which allows for the first integration of a high-order fast direct solver with automatic differentiation tools. We conclude with extensive numerical examples showing our methods are fast and accurate on two- and three-dimensional problems.

Determination of the strong coupling and its running from measurements of inclusive jet production

The value of the strong coupling α S is determined in a comprehensive analysis at next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy in quantum chromodynamics. The analysis uses double-differential cross section measurements from the CMS Collaboration at the CERN LHC of inclusive jet production in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 2.76, 7, 8, and 13 TeV, combined with inclusive deep-inelastic data from HERA. The value α S (m z ) = 0.1176 $^{+0.0014}_{-0.0016}$ is obtained at the scale of the Z boson mass. By using the measurements in different intervals of jet transverse momentum, the running of α S is probed for energies between 100 and 1600 GeV.

Tuning Microstructure of Mesophase Pitch Carbon Fiber by Altering the Carbonization Ramp Rate

The microstructure of mesophase pitch carbon fibers (CFs) are tuned by varying ramp rates from 1 to 50 °C min –1 up to 1000 °C to study the effect of ramp rate on CFs’ microstructure, thermal and mechanical properties with the goal of offsetting the cost by decreasing cycle time. The ramp rates represent carbonization times ranging from 16.4 to 1.17 h, not including cool down. Differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and derivative thermogravimetry are used to investigate the impact ramp rate has on the thermal properties of mesophase pitch. It is found that lower ramp rates are endothermic in nature with a lower temperature onset and maximum weight loss. Higher ramp rates possess an exothermic nature with higher temperatures resulting in maximal weight loss over a smaller range of temperatures. Mechanical testing shows varying CF strengths and moduli dependent on ramp rate and an optimized process is developed to produce the strongest CF. Furthermore, microstructural characterization revealed that faster ramp rates lead to smaller interplanar spacings and larger crystallites but possessed greater disorder.

Synthesis and characterization of biobased copolyesters based on pentanediol: (1) Poly(pentylene dodecanoate–co–furandicarboxylate)

A series of biobased aliphatic-aromatic copolyesters, poly(pentylene dodecanoate-co-furandicarboxylates) (PPeDFs) were synthesized via an esterification and polycondensation melt process. The copolyesters were characterized using gel permeation chromatography, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1 H NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, wide angle x-ray scattering, and tensile testing. The thermal transition behavior was strongly dependent on composition, with the melting and glass transition temperatures reaching a minimum at approximately equimolar ratio of D to F. All copolyesters were stable below 300°C with their R 600 (the weight of material remaining at 600°C) values increasing with F fraction. PPeD to PPeDF30 (e.g., mole ratio D/F = 7:3) show sharp PPeD crystalline reflections only while broad PPeF reflections are shown in PPeF and PPeDF90. PPeDF40 to PPeDF80 showed both crystal structures. The fractional crystallinity for the PPeD was much higher than PPeF and the fractional crystallinity of the copolymers showed a minimum at D/F ratios closer to the latter. Here, the stress at break and modulus both exhibited maxima at D/F ratios that were either high or low, but somewhat surprisingly a strong maximum in percent elongation at break of over 600% occurs at PPeDF40. For this composition, a typical plastic behavior curve was found including a yield point, high elongation at break, and strain hardening.

Cytochrome P450s CYP380C6 and CYP380C9 in green peach aphid facilitate its adaptation to indole glucosinolate‐mediated plant defense

Abstract BACKGROUND Overexpressing CIRCADIAN CLOCK ASSOCIATED1 in Arabidopsis thaliana ( CCA1‐ox ) increases indole glucosinolate production and resistance to green peach aphid ( Myzus persicae ). Little is known of how aphids respond to this group of plant defense compounds or of the underlying molecular mechanism. Results Aphids reared on CCA1‐ox for over 40 generations (namely the CCA population) became less susceptible to CCA1‐ox than aphids maintained on the wild‐type Col‐0 (namely the COL population). This elevated tolerance was transgenerational as it remained for at least eight generations after the CCA population was transferred to Col‐0. Intriguingly, transcriptome analysis indicated that all differential cytochrome P450 monooxygenase genes ( MpCYPs ), primarily MpCYP4 s, MpCYP380s and MpCYP6 s, were more highly expressed in the CCA population. Application of a P450 inhibitor to the CCA population resulted in decreased aphid reproduction on CCA1‐ox , which was not observed if aphids were reared on Col‐0. When indole glucosinolate biosynthesis in CCA1‐ox was blocked using virus‐induced gene silencing, the effect of the P450 inhibitor on the CCA population was attenuated, affirming the essential role played by MpCYPs in counteracting the defense mechanism in CCA1‐ox that is low or absent in Col‐0. Furthermore, we used host‐induced gene silencing to identify MpCYP380C6 and MpCYP380C9 that specifically facilitated the CCA population to cope with CCA1 ‐mediated plant defense. Expression profiles revealed their possible contribution to the transgenerational tolerance observed in aphids. Conclusion MpCYP380C6 and MpCYP380C9 in aphids play a crucial role in mitigating indole glucosinolate‐mediated plant defense, and this effect is transgenerational.

Holomorphic modular bootstrap revisited

In this work we revisit the “holomorphic modular bootstrap”, i.e. the classification of rational conformal field theories via an analysis of the modular differential equations satisfied by their characters. By making use of the representation theory of PSL(2, $\mathbb{Z}_n$), we describe a method to classify allowed central charges and weights (c, h i ) for theories with any number of characters d. This allows us to avoid various bottlenecks encountered previously in the literature, and leads to a classification of consistent characters up to d = 5 whose modular differential equations are uniquely fixed in terms of (c, h i ). In the process, we identify the full set of constraints on the allowed values of the Wronskian index for fixed d ≤ 5.

Effect of supplementary cementitious materials on carbonation of cement pastes

Supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) are increasingly used in concrete for economical and environmental reasons. However, the durability of reinforced concretes against, for example, corrosion induced by carbonation varies. Here, the phase assemblage of various cement pastes with/without SCM (slag, fly ash and metakaolin), carbonated in accelerated conditions (1.5% CO{sub 2} and 65% RH) or not, has been investigated by various technics (XRD, TGA/DTA and {sup 29}Si as well as {sup 27}Al nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy) and compared. Results show that, after carbonation, anhydrous phases are less decalcified than hydrated phases. In cement pastes with slag, most of the calcium remains in the non-hydrated part of the slag. In contrast, the C-A,S-H phase is deeply modified and results show a coupling between C-A,S-H and hydrated aluminate phases during carbonation. In all carbonated materials, these phases tend to become an aluminosilicate gel, a very amorphous/disordered phase, containing less water than the original hydrates.

Influence of plasticizers on thermal and mechanical properties of biocomposite filaments made from lignin and polylactic acid for 3D printing

Polylactic acid (PLA) and organosolv lignin were mixed at different ratios and extruded to obtain PLA-lignin composite filaments. PLA was replaced with lignin up to 20 wt%. Two plasticizers (polyethylene glycol (PEG) 2000 and struktol TR451) were added in varying concentrations to enhance the properties of PLA_L20 (20% lignin in PLA) composite filaments. Furthermore, the effect of lignin in PLA, and PEG, and struktol in PLA_L20 composites was investigated via tensile test, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of the filaments, and dynamic mechanical analysis of 3D printed samples. A 2 wt% PEG was able to enhance both tensile stress and elongation at maximum load of PLA_L20 composite by 19% and 35%, respectively, whereas struktol TR451 was able to improve elongation at maximum load by 24%.
