Isotropic etchback method of linewidth tailoring multilayer dielectric diffraction gratings for improvement of laser damage resistance and diffraction efficiency

A method of fabricating a multilayer dielectric (MLD) diffraction grating by providing a multilayer stack having a grating layer, and anisotropically etching the grating layer to form grating lines having an initial lineheight, an initial linewidth, and an initial grating duty cycle, that are greater than a target lineheight, a target linewidth, and a target grating duty cycle, respectively. An isotropic wet etch solution is then used to etch back the grating lines to the target lineheight, the target linewidth, and the target grating duty cycle so as to minimize electric field intensities and maximize diffraction efficiency for a given set of MLD illumination conditions.

Efficient ultrathin all-dielectric nonlinear optical device

An apparatus and method are provided for generating harmonic light from a pump beam that is impinged on a metasurface comprising a plurality of all-dielectric resonator bodies. A multiple quantum well structure formed in each resonator body includes asymmetric coupled quantum wells having intersubband transition frequencies that couple to Mie resonances of the resonator bodies.

Chemical Vapor Deposition-Grown Hexagonal Boron Nitride and Graphene for Tandem Dielectric Capacitive Polymer Devices

To address the low energy density of polymeric capacitors, this work explores how tandem combinations of antagonistic properties can enhance energy storage. We introduce multilayer architecture integrating chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-grown ≈2 nm hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and graphene with ferroelectric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and linear polyetherimide (PEI) layers to suppress leakage paths, reduce loss, and promote Maxwell–Wagner–Sillars polarization. Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and plasma focused ion beam (PFIB) analyses confirm robust material integration. In conclusion, for the tandem device, E BD ≈600 V/μm, while individual layers show lower values (PVDF|Graphene (Gr)|PVDF ≈ 50 V/μm and PEI|hBN|PEI ≈ 275 V/μm), yielding an overall ≈6000% enhancement and demonstrating the effectiveness of the 2D multilayer design.

RF sheath induced sputtering on Proto-MPEX. I. Sheath equivalent dielectric layer for modeling the RF sheath

The pulsed linear plasma device Prototype Material Plasma Exposure eXperiment (Proto-MPEX) uses a radio frequency (RF) helicon antenna with an aluminum nitride ceramic window for plasma production. The RF sheath created under the helicon antenna is sufficient to cause ion impact energies to be greater than the sputtering threshold of the AlN helicon window material and for impurities to be created. In this study, we investigate the RF sheath on the inner diameter of the helicon window and its impact on the impurity production rates in Proto-MPEX. Three models—a 3D COMSOL finite element RF model of the Proto-MPEX helicon region, a rectified DC sheath potential model, and the 3D Global Impurity TRansport code—are coupled together to study impurity production and transportation. This novel method of impurity generation and transport modeling spans length scales ranging from the sheath (millimeters or less) up to the full device (meters) and can be applied to other radio frequency sources and antennas in a wide range of plasma physics studies, including basic plasmas, low-temperature processing plasmas, plasma thrusters, and fusion plasmas.

Study of dielectric breakdown in liquid xenon with XeBrA: The xenon breakdown apparatus

Maintaining the electric fields necessary for the current generation of noble liquid time projection chambers (TPCs), with drift lengths exceeding 1 m, requires a large negative voltage applied to their cathode. Delivering such high voltage is associated with an elevated risk of electrostatic discharge and electroluminescence, which would be detrimental to the performance of the experiment. The Xenon Breakdown Apparatus (XeBrA) is a 5-l, high voltage test chamber built to investigate the contributing factors to electrical breakdown in noble liquids. Here, in this work, we present the main findings after conducting scans over stressed electrode areas, surface finish, pressure, and high voltage ramp speed in the medium of liquid xenon. Area scaling and surface finish were observed to be the dominant factors affecting breakdown, whereas no significant changes were observed with varying pressure or ramp speed. A general rise in both the anode current and photon rate was observed in the last 30 s, leading up to a breakdown, with a marked increase in the last couple of seconds. In addition, the position of breakdowns was reconstructed with a system of high-speed cameras and a moderate correlation with the Fowler–Nordheim field emission model was found. Tentative evidence for bubble nucleation being the originating mechanism of breakdown in the liquid was also observed. We deem the results presented in this work to be of particular interest for the design of future, large TPCs, and practical recommendations are provided.

Tuning superconductivity of Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+x by fluoride ion intercalation with LaF 3 gate dielectric

Here, we demonstrate fluorine intercalation into Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+x (BSCCO) flakes, as thick as 100 nm, by back-gating a single crystalline LaF 3 substrate. Element-sensitive analysis not only confirms the presence of fluorine in BSCCO after gating but also reveals lateral diffusion of fluorine in BSCCO. Transport measurements further demonstrate the hole-doping effect of fluoride ions in BSCCO through effective modulation of the superconducting transitions. Our work introduces a distinct type of ions (F - ) that can be intercalated into materials via solid state back-gating. It broadens the toolbox of ion back-gating and is useful for addressing exotic phenomena in the heavily hole doped regime.

High field dielectric response in κ-Ga 2 O 3 films

κ-Ga 2 O 3 has been predicted to be a potential ferroelectric material. In this work, undoped Ga 2 O 3 films were grown by either plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) or metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) on platinized sapphire substrates. 50 nm thick PEALD films with a mixture of κ-Ga 2 O 3 and β-Ga 2 O 3 had a relative permittivity of ~27, a loss tangent below 2%, and high electrical resistivity up to ~1.5 MV/cm. 700 nm thick MOCVD films with predominantly the κ-Ga 2 O 3 phase had relative permittivities of ~18 and a loss tangent of 1% at 10 kHz. Neither film showed compelling evidence for ferroelectricity measured at fields up to 1.5 MV/cm, even after hundreds of cycles. Here, piezoresponse force microscopy measurements on bare κ-Ga 2 O 3 showed a finite piezoelectric response that could not be reoriented for electric fields up to 1.33 MV/cm.
