Estimation of conditional cumulative incidence functions under generalized semiparametric regression models with missing covariates, with application to analysis of biomarker correlates in vaccine trials

Herein, this article presents generalized semiparametric regression models for conditional cumulative incidence functions with competing risks data when covariates are missing by sampling design or happenstance. A doubly robust augmented inverse probability weighted (AIPW) complete-case approach to estimation and inference is investigated. This approach modifies IPW complete-case estimating equations by exploiting the key features in the relationship between the missing covariates and the phase-one data to improve efficiency. An iterative numerical procedure is derived to solve the nonlinear estimating equations. The asymptotic properties of the proposed estimators are established. A simulation study examining the finite-sample performances of the proposed estimators shows that the AIPW estimators are more efficient than the IPW estimators. The developed method is applied to the RV144 HIV-1 vaccine efficacy trial to investigate vaccine-induced IgG binding antibodies to HIV-1 as correlates of acquisition of HIV-1 infection while taking account of whether the HIV-1 sequences are near or far from the HIV-1 sequences represented in the vaccine construct.

Applications of remote sensing to stream discharge predictions

A feasibility study has been initiated on the use of remote earth observations for augmenting stream discharge prediction for the design and/or operation of major reservoir systems, pumping systems and irrigation systems. The near-term objectives are the interpolation of sparsely instrumented precipitation surveillance networks and the direct measurement of water loss by evaporation. The first steps of the study covered a survey of existing reservoir systems, stream discharge prediction methods, gage networks and the development of a self-adaptive variation of the Kentucky Watershed model, SNOPSET, that includes snowmelt. As a result of these studies, a special three channel scanner is being built for a small aircraft, which should provide snow, temperature and water vapor maps for the spatial and temporal interpolation of stream gages.

Thrust augmentor application for STOL and V/STOL

A general parametric description is suggested for thrust augmentor application to STOL and V/STOL aircraft. The parameters and their relationships are discussed using several aircraft augmentor integration problems. For a STOL transport design, the ram drag is a key consideration, limiting the maximum gross augmentation that can be utilized. Maximizing gross augmentation and balancing the aircraft are key considerations for a V/STOL fighter design. Results from wind tunnel investigations on several different thrust augmentor concepts and system studies on STOL transport designs are also included.

Solidification of high temperature molten salts for thermal energy storage systems

The solidification of phase change materials for the high temperature thermal energy storage system of an advanced solar thermal power system has been examined theoretically. In light of the particular thermophysical properties of candidate phase change high temperature salts, such as the eutectic mixture of NaF - MgF2, the heat transfer characteristics of one-dimensional inward solidification for a cylindrical geometry have been studied. The Biot number for the solidified salt is shown to be the critical design parameter for constant extraction heat flux. A fin-on-fin design concept of heat transfer surface augmentation is proposed in an effort to minimize the effects of the salt's low thermal conductivity and large volume change upon fusing.

Guidance and control/ACEE

Active controls improve airplane performance by stabilizing its flight, reducing departures from stable flight, and alleviating loads imposed by external forces such as gusts, turbulence, or maneuvers. Some uses for active control systems, the design of redundant and reliable stability augmentation systems, digital fly-by-wire, and NASA assessments of the technology of sensors and actuators are discussed. A series of trade-off studies to better define optimum flight control systems, and research by drone and full-scale models are described.

Demonstration of relaxed static stability on a commercial transport

Increasing jet aircraft fuel costs from 25 percent to nearly 60 percent of the aircraft direct operating costs have led to a heavy emphasis on the development of transport aircraft with significantly improved aerodynamic performance. The application of the concept of relaxed static stability (RSS) and the utilization of an active control stability augmentation system make it possible to design an aircraft with reduced aerodynamic trim drag due to a farther-aft cg balance. Reduced aerodynamic parasite drag and lower structural weight due to a smaller horizontal tail surface can also be obtained. The application of RSS has been studied under a NASA-sponsored program to determine ways of improving the energy efficiency in current and future transport aircraft. Attention is given to a near-term pitch active control system, an advanced pitch active control system, and an operational overview.

Control of V/STOL aircraft

This paper deals with control of V/STOL aircraft in powered-lift flight. A review of representative operational mission tasks is presented for the take-off, transition, hover and landing flight phases. Characteristics inherent in the basic airframe and propulsion system and the behavior associated with control augmentation systems are considered. Demands for augmented stability and control response to meet certain mission operational requirements are discussed. Experience from ground-based simulation and flight experiments that illustrates the impact of augmented stability and control on aircraft design is related by example.

Large space antennas: A systems analysis case history

The value of systems analysis and engineering is aptly demonstrated by the work on Large Space Antennas (LSA) by the NASA Langley Spacecraft Analysis Branch. This work was accomplished over the last half-decade by augmenting traditional system engineering, analysis, and design techniques with computer-aided engineering (CAE) techniques using the Langley-developed Interactive Design and Evaluation of Advanced Spacecraft (IDEAS) system. This report chronicles the research highlights and special systems analyses that focused the LSA work on deployable truss antennas. It notes developmental trends toward greater use of CAE techniques in their design and analysis. A look to the future envisions the application of improved systems analysis capabilities to advanced space systems such as an advanced space station or to lunar and Martian missions and human habitats.

Plans for the development of EOS SAR systems using the Alaska SAR facility

The Alaska SAR Facility (ASF) program for the acquisition and processing of data from the ESA ERS-1, the NASDA ERS-1, and Radarsat and to carry out a program of science investigations using the data is introduced. Agreements for data acquisition and analysis are in place except for the agreement between NASA and Radarsat which is in negotiation. The ASF baseline system, consisting of the Receiving Ground System, the SAR Processor System and the Archive and Operations System, passed critical design review and is fully in implementation phase. Augments to the baseline system for systems to perform geophysical processing and for processing of J-ERS-1 optical data are in the design and implementation phase. The ASF provides a very effective vehicle with which to prepare for the Earth Observing System (EOS) in that it will aid the development of systems and technologies for handling the data volumes produced by the systems of the next decades, and it will also supply some of the data types that will be produced by EOS.

Large-scale wind tunnel studies of a jet-engined powered ejector-lift STOVL aircraft

A full-scale model of a supersonic STOVL single engine flighter aircraft employing an ejector to augment lift in hover and in low-speed flight was tested in the 40- by 80-ft and 80- by 120-ft test sections of the National Full-Scale Aerodynamics Complex located at the NASA Ames Research Center. The measured ejector augmentation ratio in hover met the design requirement of 1.6 and continued to provide the lift necessary in forward flight for good transition qualities. The up-and-away aerodynamics (ejector system stowed) were found to be conventional for this class of vehicle. The pitch control provided by the full-span blown flaps is sufficient to control the large pitching moments generated by ventral exhaust nozzle vectoring and propulsion induced aerodynamic effects such as the turning of the flow entrained into the ejectors.

Stable H(infinity) Controller Design for the Longitudinal Dynamics of an Aircraft

This report discusses different approaches to stable H infinity controller design applied to the problem of augmenting the longitudinal dynamics of an aircraft. Stability of the H infinity controller is investigated by analyzing the effects of changes in the performance index weights, and modifications in the measured outputs. The existence of a stable suboptimal controller is also investigated. It is shown that this is equivalent to finding a stable controller, whose infinity norm is less than a specified bound, for an unstable plant which is determined from parametrization of all H infinity controllers. Examples are given for a gust alleviation and a command tracking problem.

NASA/University Technology Cooperation

NASA is extensively engaged in cooperative technology development efforts with the nation's research universities. An example of NASA/university cooperation is the work of the Space Technology Center at the University of Kansas (KU) and the KU Center for Research, Inc. (CRINC). Directed by Professor Bill G. Barr, the Space Technology Center is one of 27 interdisciplinary centers established as part of a NASA plan to set up a network of advanced facilities across the nation. Since 1981 CRINC has been involved in a technology transfer program supported by the NASA Technology Utilization Division and by industry. The objective of the technology transfer program is to encourage industrial innovation through utilization of NASA technology through improved industry/university cooperation. At KU, research is conducted by the Industrial Innovation Laboratory and the Computer Integrated Manufacturing Laboratory which utilize graduate students in engineering and computer science as research assistants. A new project of the Space Technology Center is one designed to advance NASA objectives in "augmented telerobotics." A telerobot is programmed to respond to commands from a human operator, or to mimic the movements of its human operator. The project is being conducted under the guidance of Langley Research Center.

Thrust Augmentation of a Turbojet Engine at Simulated Flight Conditions by Introduction of a Water-Alcohol Mixture into the Compressor

An investigation was conducted at simulated high-altitude flight conditions to evaluate the use of compressor evaporative cooling as a means of turbojet-engine thrust augmentation. Comparison of the performance of the engine with water-alcohol injection at the compressor inlet, at the sixth stage of the compressor, and at the sixth and ninth stages was made. From consideration of the thrust increases achieved, the interstage injection of the coolant was considered more desirable preferred over the combined sixth- and ninth-stage injection because of its relative simplicity. A maximum augmented net-thrust ratio of 1.106 and a maximum augmented jet-thrust ratio of 1.062 were obtained at an augmented liquid ratio of 2.98 and an engine-inlet temperature of 80 F. At lower inlet temperatures (-40 to 40 F), the maximum augmented net-thrust ratios ranged from 1.040 to 1.076 and the maximum augmented jet-thrust ratios ranged from 1.027 to 1.048, depending upon the inlet temperature. The relatively small increase in performance at the lower inlet-air temperatures can be partially attributed to the inadequate evaporation of the water-alcohol mixture, but the more significant limitation was believed to be caused by the negative influence of the liquid coolant on engine- component performance. In general, it is concluded that the effectiveness of the injection of a coolant into the compressor as a means of thrust augmentation is considerably influenced by the design characteristics of the components of the engine being used.

Realizing a Spacesuit Compatible Augmented Reality System to Meet the Work Needs of Future Human Spaceflight Exploration

In this paper, we identify the broad range of challenges associated with creating an augmented reality for future spaceflight missions. The challenges were framed within a sociotechnical framework to explore how an imagined augmented reality system might one day help crew cope with future exploration mission demands. Key challenges include an augmented reality system cannot simply be designed to help a single suited astronaut and must enable the broader mission team. There exists a host of optical, compute, and control technical challenges that must be simultaneously addressed while the work domain itself is in development. There exist limited methods to help cope with the envisioned world problem; however, we emphasize a few strategies to articulate work design assumptions and host this detail in a transparent fashion. Finally, we note the broader organizational constraints that shape the creation of such novel technology for spaceflight. By addressing these broad range of challenges directly, early in the design and development process, key trade-offs can be considered and fundamental concerns within the community can be addressed to yield desired mission outcomes.

Towards constrained grid-forming control

Grid-forming converters are commonly envisioned to replace conventional synchronous generators as the cornerstone of future power systems. However, compared to synchronous generators, power converters and their power sources (e.g., renewable generation, energy storage) are subject to significant physical constraints (e.g., current limits, modulation limits). Grid-forming controls are commonly designed neglecting these constraints and subsequently augmented with limiters for a subset of constraints. In this work, we propose a systematic approach to constrained grid-forming control of two-level voltage source converters interfacing photovoltaics. We first formulate grid-forming control objectives and constraints of voltage source converters and photovoltaics in a one-step optimal grid-forming control problem. Next, we leverage primal-dual dynamics to obtain a dynamic feedback controller that approximates the solution of the one-step optimal grid-forming control problem. Finally, electromagnetic transient simulations are used to illustrate the results.
