Another Set of Python Tools for Visualizing and Manipulating Small-Angle Neutron Scattering Data: Descriptions and Examples

The GP-SANS, Bio-SANS and EQ-SANS instruments at ORNL utilize drtsans for data reduction. drtsans is built on Python, and it can be run using python scripts and Jupyter notebooks. The flexibility afforded by Python makes it possible to incorporate additional actions into the scripts used for data reduction, such as analysis and visualization. Here, a new set of tools for visualizing and manipulating SANS data that can be incorporated into the data reduction scripts for the ORNL SANS instruments, or employed during post–processing, is presented that expands the capabilities of the two previously-released tool sets.

FECM/NETL Hydrogen Pipeline Cost Model (2024): Description and User’s Manual

The FECM/NETL Hydrogen Pipeline Cost Model (H2_P_COM) estimates costs for transporting gaseous hydrogen in a pipeline from a source, such as a hydrogen production facility, to a final destination which may be a user of the hydrogen or a distribution center where hydrogen in the pipeline is diverted to multiple end users. This document provides two main functions. First, the document describes the equations and algorithms that are used by the model to calculate technical quantities (such as the minimum inner pipe diameter needed to transport a user-specified H 2 mass flow rate a specified distance) and engineering-economic quantities (such as capital costs, operating costs, and cash flows). Second, the document is a user’s manual for the model that describes the procedures the user must follow to run the model. The model can be accessed at this URL: https://www.netl.doe.gov/energy-analysis/details?id=db897190-8e26-40b1-9535-ee78ac934193

A Physics-Informed Deep Learning Description of Knudsen Layer Reactivity Reduction

A physics-informed neural network (PINN) is used to evaluate the fast ion distribution in the hot spot of an inertial confinement fusion target. The use of tailored input and output layers to the neural network is shown to enable a PINN to learn the parametric solution to the Vlasov–Fokker–Planck equation in the absence of any synthetic or experimental data. As an explicit demonstration of the approach, the specific problem of Knudsen layer fusion yield reduction is treated. Here, the predictions from the Vlasov–Fokker–Planck PINN are used to provide a non-perturbative solution of the fast ion tail in the vicinity of the hot spot, thus allowing the spatial profile of the fusion reactivity to be evaluated for a range of collisionalities and hot spot conditions. Excellent agreement is found between the predictions of the Vlasov–Fokker–Planck PINN and the results from traditional numerical solvers with respect to both the energy and spatial distribution of fast ions and the fusion reactivity profile, demonstrating that the Vlasov–Fokker–Planck PINN provides an accurate and efficient means of determining the impact of Knudsen layer yield reduction across a broad range of plasma conditions.

FECM/NETL Natural Gas with Hydrogen Pipeline Cost Model (2024): Description and User’s Manual

This is the user’s manual for The FECM/NETL Natural Gas with Hydrogen Pipeline Cost Model (NG-H2_P_COM) that estimates costs for transporting gaseous hydrogen with natural gas in a pipeline from a source, such as a hydrogen production facility, to a final destination which may be a user of the hydrogen and natural gas or a distribution center where hydrogen in the pipeline with natural gas is diverted to multiple end users. This user’s manual provides two main functions. First, the detailed statement describes the equations and algorithms that are used by the model to calculate technical quantities (such as blend hydrogen percentage, reuse percentage of the pipeline and stations, the pipe diameter size and length needed to transport a user-specified hydrogen with natural gas rate in a specified distance) and engineering-economic quantities (such as capital costs, operating costs, and cash flows). Second, the document is a user’s manual for the model that describes the procedures the user must follow to configure and setup the model, run the model, analyze the results, and visualize the outcomes. Such details offer user a quick and handy way to utilize the model for their application and decision making. Description of the Gas Sampling and Circulation System for the LYNM PE1-A Experiment

A series of multiphysics experiments, referred to as Physics Experiment 1 (PE1) is underway at the U.S. Nevada National Security Site. The PE1 series includes detonations of three underground chemical explosions. As the name implies, there are a number of experiments investigating the signals generated by the explosion. The experiment series objectives are outlined in a report from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.1 One of the experiments is a gas migration experiment. Gas tracers were imbedded in the explosives and gas sampling boreholes were installed in the formation in the test bed. Connected to the monitoring points is a circulation system that moves gas to a central measurement location. This report does not describe the gas analysis or collection systems, but rather the circulation system that provides the gas for measurement. Here, we have combined four project documents into a single report that describes the design, build, installation, testing, and operation of the gas sampling network.

Requirements Description of GAMSOR and GAMSRC

This report presents the modeling and simulation capabilities of Argonne National Laboratory’s GAMSOR and GAMSRC code that is used in present reactor analysis activities. These capabilities will then be used to establish the set of verification tasks necessary to verify GAMSOR for use on commercial projects. A similar approach was taken for the PERSENT, REBUS and DIF3D software packages. The GAMSOR program is a modified version of DIF3D used to obtain the coupled neutron gamma flux distributions for a given reactor system. GAMSOR was first developed in the 1980s and its work has progressed in parallel with DIF3D throughout its various development phases. While GAMSOR is compatible with DIF3D-FD and DIF3D-Nodal, DIF3D-VARIANT is most commonly used today and will be the focus of the present verification effort. As covered in [1], GAMSOR was built to provide more accurate heating distributions by explicitly solving for both the gamma and neutron heating distributions. Without this consideration, gamma heat is normally assumed to be deposited locally at the site of gamma production. This is acceptable for modeling some phenomena because the total energy production is preserved, but it can lead to inaccurate approximations of fluence-dependent behaviors such as fuel performance, swelling, cladding embrittlement, radiation induced creep, and power peaking. The outputs from GAMSOR are contained in multiple intermediate and final output files: FIXSRC, VARSRC, GTFLUX, GHFLUX, PWDINT, NPDINT, and GPDINT. DIF3D normally produces a PWDINT file containing power density results, with the assumption that gamma rays are absorbed where they are emitted (i.e., energy deposition is local with no modeled transport). With GAMSOR, neutron power density (NPDINT) and gamma power density (GPDINT) are both produced, with their summed power densities replacing the results in PWDINT for total heating (i.e., recoverable) power density.

A similar path was followed for the REBUS [2] and DIF3D [3] software packages.
