The development of hurricane Inez, 1966, as shown by satellite nighttime radiometric and daytime television coverage

A complete documentation of Numbus 2 High Resolution infrared Radiometer data and ESSA-1 and 3 television photographs is presented for the life-time of Hurricane Inez, 1966. Ten computer produced radiation charts were analyzed in order to delineate the three dimensional cloud structure during the formative, mature and dissipating stages of this tropical cyclone. Time sections were drawn throughout the storm's life cycle to relate the warm core development and upper level outflow of the storm with their respective cloud canopies, as shown by the radiation data. Aerial reconnaissance weather reports, radar photographs and conventional weather analyses were used to complement the satellite data. A computer program was utilized to accept Nimbus 2 HRIR equivalent blackbody temperatures within historical maximum and minimum sea surface temperature limits over the tropical Atlantic Ocean.

Satellite observation of lake ice as a climate indicator - Initial results from statewide monitoring in Wisconsin

The research reported herein focused on the general hypothesis that satellite remote sensing of large-area, long-term trends in lake ice phenology (formation and breakup) is a robust, integrated measure of regional and global climate change. To validate this hypothesis, we explored the use of data from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) to discriminate the presence and extent of lake ice during the winter of 1990-1991 on the 45 lakes and reservoirs in Wisconsin with a surface area greater than 1,000 hectares. Our results suggest both the feasibility of using the AVHRR to determine the date of lake ice breakup as well as the strong correlation (R= -0.87) of the date so derived with local surface-based temperature measurements. These results suggest the potential of using current and archival satellite data to monitor changes in the date of lake ice breakup as a means of detecting regional 'signals' of greenhouse warming.

TFaNS Tone Fan Noise Design/Prediction System: System Description, CUP3D Technical Documentation and Manual for Code Developers - Volume 1

TFaNS is the Tone Fan Noise Design/Prediction System developed by Pratt & Whitney under contract to NASA Lewis (presently NASA Glenn). The purpose of this system is to predict tone noise emanating from a fan stage including the effects of reflection and transmission by the rotor and stator and by the duct inlet and nozzle. These effects have been added to an existing annular duct/isolated stator noise prediction capability. TFaNS consists of: The codes that compute the acoustic properties (reflection and transmission coefficients) of the various elements and write them to files. Cup3D: Fan Noise Coupling Code that reads these files, solves the coupling problem, and outputs the desired noise predictions. AWAKEN: CFD/Measured Wake Postprocessor which reformats CFD wake predictions and/or measured wake data so it can be used by the system. This volume of the report provides technical background for TFaNS including the organization of the system and CUP3D technical documentation. This document also provides information for code developers who must write Acoustic Property Files in the CUP3D format. This report is divided into three volumes: Volume I: System Description, CUP3D Technical Documentation, and Manual for Code Developers; Volume II: User's Manual, TFaNS Vers. 1.4; Volume III: Evaluation of System Codes.

MaROS Strategic Relay Planning and Coordination Interfaces

The Mars Relay Operations Service (MaROS) is designed to provide planning and analysis tools in support of ongoing Mars Network relay operations. Strategic relay planning requires coordination between lander and orbiter mission ground data system (GDS) teams to schedule and execute relay communications passes. MaROS centralizes this process, correlating all data relevant to relay coordination to provide a cohesive picture of the relay state. Service users interact with the system through thin-layer command line and web user interface client applications. Users provide and utilize data such as lander view periods of orbiters, Deep Space Network (DSN) antenna tracks, and reports of relay pass performance. Users upload and download relevant relay data via formally defined and documented file structures including some described in Extensible Markup Language (XML). Clients interface with the system via an http-based Representational State Transfer (ReST) pattern using Javascript Object Notation (JSON) formats. This paper will provide a general overview of the service architecture and detail the software interfaces and considerations for interface design.

Using PAFEC as a preprocessor for COSMIC/NASTRAN

Programs for Automatic Finite Element Calculations (PAFEC) is a general purpose, three dimensional linear and nonlinear finite element program (ref. 1). PAFEC's features include free format input utilizing engineering keywords, powerful mesh generating facilities, sophisticated data base management procedures, and extensive data validation checks. Presented here is a description of a software interface that permits PAFEC to be used as a preprocessor for COSMIC/NASTRAN. This user friendly software, called PAFCOS, frees the stress analyst from the laborious and error prone procedure of creating and debugging a rigid format COSMIC/NASTRAN bulk data deck. By interactively creating and debugging a finite element model with PAFEC, thus taking full advantage of the free format engineering keyword oriented data structure of PAFEC, the amount of time spent during model generation can be drastically reduced. The PAFCOS software will automatically convert a PAFEC data structure into a COSMIC/NASTRAN bulk data deck. The capabilities and limitations of the PAFCOS software are fully discussed in the following report.

Optical and infrared surface photometry of NGC 3077

Photoelectric U, B, and V, photovoltaic K, and four-filter CCD surface photometry of the small, M81-linked Irr II galaxy NGC 3077 are reported. The observations are compared with data from previous studies, and the mass, density, and optical depth ratios are determined for a prominent dust cloud near the center of the galaxy. These characteristics are found to be similar to those of galactic dust clouds associated with star-formation sites. The observed intensity distribution at various wavelengths indicates that NGC 3077 was an elliptical galaxy before its interaction with M81. During the interaction NGC 3077 acquired the interstellar material which is currently forming stars in its central regions.

A search for pre-main sequence stars in the high-latitude molecular clouds. II - A survey of the Einstein database

The preliminary results are reported of a survey of every EINSTEIN image which overlaps any high-latitude molecular cloud in a search for X-ray emitting pre-main sequence stars. This survey, together with complementary KPNO and IRAS data, will allow the determination of how prevalent low mass star formation is in these clouds in general and, particularly, in the translucent molecular clouds.

Human Factors Process Task Analysis Liquid Oxygen Pump Acceptance Test Procedure for the Advanced Technology Development Center

A process task analysis effort was undertaken by Dynacs Inc. commencing in June 2002 under contract from NASA YA-D6. Funding was provided through NASA's Ames Research Center (ARC), Code M/HQ, and Industrial Engineering and Safety (IES). The John F. Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Engineering Development Contract (EDC) Task Order was 5SMA768. The scope of the effort was to conduct a Human Factors Process Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (HF PFMEA) of a hazardous activity and provide recommendations to eliminate or reduce the effects of errors caused by human factors. The Liquid Oxygen (LOX) Pump Acceptance Test Procedure (ATP) was selected for this analysis. The HF PFMEA table (see appendix A) provides an analysis of six major categories evaluated for this study. These categories include Personnel Certification, Test Procedure Format, Test Procedure Safety Controls, Test Article Data, Instrumentation, and Voice Communication. For each specific requirement listed in appendix A, the following topics were addressed: Requirement, Potential Human Error, Performance-Shaping Factors, Potential Effects of the Error, Barriers and Controls, Risk Priority Numbers, and Recommended Actions. This report summarizes findings and gives recommendations as determined by the data contained in appendix A. It also includes a discussion of technology barriers and challenges to performing task analyses, as well as lessons learned. The HF PFMEA table in appendix A recommends the use of accepted and required safety criteria in order to reduce the risk of human error. The items with the highest risk priority numbers should receive the greatest amount of consideration. Implementation of the recommendations will result in a safer operation for all personnel.

Enhanced Reporting of Mars Exploration Rover Telemetry

Mars Exploration Rover Enhanced Telemetry Extraction and Reporting System (METERS) is software that generates a human-readable representation of the state of the mobility and arm-related systems of the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) vehicles on each Martian solar day (sol). Data are received from the MER spacecraft in multiple streams having various formats including text messages, sparsely-sampled engineering quantities, images, and individual motor-command histories.

Research Report: Building a Wide Reach Corpus for Secure Parser Development

Whether developing from a specification or deriving parsers from samples, LangSec parser developers require widereach corpora of their target file format in order to identify key edge cases or common deviations from the format’s specification. In this work-in-progress paper, we report the details of several methods we’ve used to gather 30 million files, extract features and make these features amenable to search and other analytics. This paper documents opportunities and limitations of some popular open source data and tools and this paper will benefit researchers who need to efficiently gather a large file corpus.

New format presentation for infrared spectral emittance data. Infrared spectrometry studies, phase 5

Methods for infrared radiance measurements from geological materials were studied for airborne use over terrains with minimal vegetation. The tasks of the investigation were: (1) calculation of emittance ratios, (2) comparison of IR spectral emittance data with K-band scatterometer data over Pisgah Crater, and (3) standard infrared spectral file. Published papers reporting the research are included.

Greenland 1979 microwave remote sensing data catalog report, 14-15 October 1979

Microwave remote sensing measurements were cataloged for active and passive instruments in support of the 1979 Greenland Remote Sensing Experiment. Instruments used in this field experiment include the stepped frequency microwave radiometer (4 to 8 GHz) and the airborne microwave scatterometer (14.6 GHz). The microwave signature data are inventoried and cataloged in a user friendly format and are available on 9 track computer compatible tapes upon request.

An ALMA Study of the Massive Molecular Clump N159W-North in the Large Magellanic Cloud: A Possible Gas Flow Penetrating One of the Most Massive Protocluster Systems in the Local Group

Massive dense clumps in the Large Magellanic Cloud can be an important laboratory to explore the formation ofpopulous clusters. We report multiscale ALMA observations of the N159W-North clump, which is the most CO-intense region in the galaxy. High-resolution CO isotope and 1.3 mm continuum observations with an angularresolution of∼025(∼0.07 pc)revealed more thanfive protostellar sources with CO outflows within the mainridge clump. One of the thermal continuum sources, MMS-2, shows an especially massive/dense nature whosetotal H2mass and peak column density are∼104Meand∼1024cm−2, respectively, and harbors massive(∼100Me)starless core candidates identified as its internal substructures. The main ridge containing this sourcecan be categorized as one of the most massive protocluster systems in the Local Group. The CO high-resolutionobservations found several distinctfilamentary clouds extending southward from the star-forming spots. The CO(1–0)data set with a largerfield of view reveals a conical,∼30 pc long complex extending toward the northerndirection. These features indicate that a large-scale gas compression event may have produced the massive star-forming complex. Based on the striking similarity between the N159W-North complex and the other twopreviously reported high-mass star-forming clouds in the nearby regions, we propose a“teardrops inflow model”that explains the synchronized, extreme star formation across>50 pc, including one of the most massiveprotocluster clumps in the Local Group.

Significant achievements in the Planetary Geology Program

Developments reported at a meeting of principal investigators for NASA's planetology geology program are summarized. Topics covered include: constraints on solar system formation; asteriods, comets, and satellites; constraints on planetary interiors; volatiles and regoliths; instrument development techniques; planetary cartography; geological and geochemical constraints on planetary evolution; fluvial processes and channel formation; volcanic processes; Eolian processes; radar studies of planetary surfaces; cratering as a process, landform, and dating method; and the Tharsis region of Mars. Activities at a planetary geology field conference on Eolian processes are reported and techniques recommended for the presentation and analysis of crater size-frequency data are included.

Alternate methods of applying diffusants to silicon solar cells

Low-melting phosphate and borate glasses were screen printed on silicon wafers and heated to form n and p junctions. Data on surface appearance, sheet resistance and junction depth are presented. Similar data are reported for vapor phase transport from sintered aluminum metaphosphate and boron-containing glass-ceramic solid sources. Simultaneous diffusion of an N(+) layer with screen-printed glass and a p(+) layer with screen-printed Al alloy paste was attempted. No p(+) back surface field formation was achieved. Some good cells were produced but the heating in an endless-belt furnace caused a large scatter in sheet resistance and junction depth for three separate lots of wafers.

The infrared astronomical satellite asteroid database

The creation, maintenance, and distribution of the set of ground-based observational data being used to help calculate the diameters and albedos of asteroids observed by IRAS during the sky survey of February-November 1983 are discussed in a status report. The database comprises orbital elements, absolute magnitudes, UBV colors, thermal radiometry, light-curve parameters, and taxonomic classifications; supplementary files include eight-color photometry, spectrophotometry, polarimetry, JHK observations, proper elements, discovery data, occultation diameters, radar characteristics, and references. Distribution in machine-readable and hard-copy formats and maintenance of the database by incorporating new data as they are published are planned.

Space technology: A study of the significance of recognition for innovators of spinoff technologies. Commercial Space Expo-USA, 1993

This is a report on the data collected at the Commercial Space Expo. The Expo was held 13-14 April 1993, in conjunction with the National Space Symposium. There were two modes of data gathering: surveys of expo registrants and exhibit feedback. In addition, exhibitors were interviewed to get their perspectives on the format of the expo and exhibits. Expo registrants were given a paper-pencil survey instrument at the beginning of the day and were asked to turn in the survey when they left for the day. Of the approximately 100 registrants, 22 surveys were returned. In the exhibit hall were five computers set up to collect people's reactions to specific exhibits. It was envisioned that people would react to each (or several) exhibits they visited. In fact, few people did this: almost everyone who visited a computer responded to one exhibit and did not stop by another computer. Therefore, we did not get a large number of responses for any particular exhibit. Nevertheless, there are some interesting data.

The Contribution of Ionizing Stars to the Far-Infrared and Radio Emission in the Galaxy

This is the first report of a new contract. However, this project represents ongoing work, so there are completed tasks as well as newly started tasks to report. The project involves the completion of the IRAS Galaxy Atlas (IGA), a large image database produced using data from the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS). In this phase, the project switches from the production and characterization of the IGA to its use in astronomical research studies of massive star formation. The research utilizes the IGA as well as two other large data sets being produced by research partners.
