Preliminary study for a Numerical Aerodynamic Simulation Facility

The state of the art of relevant technologies, of systems and processor architectures, and the measurable computational requirements of the two existing Navier-Stokes solution programs were assessed by Control Data Corporation to determine the best approach for designing a system for aerodynamic simulation. Standard parts and components were used to identify the support processing system, which is composed of commercially available equipment and software. Technological achievements in large scale integration technology and system organization of subcomponents borrowed from the STAR-100C project were used in the design of the Navier-Stokes solver.

Space life sciences pilot user development program for the midwest region

The use of space for research by the life science community was promoted through a series of informal one-day seminars with personal follow-up as circumstances dictated. The programs were planned to: (1) describe the space shuttle vehicle and some of its intended uses; (2) discuss problems of manned space flight; (3) stimulate ideas for biological research in space; (4) discuss costs and potential for industrial and; government sponsorship; and (5) show the researcher or corporate planner how to become an active participant in life sciences research in space. An outline of seminar topics is included along with a description of the seminar organization and lists of participants and materials used.

Definition study of the Shuttle Imaging Radar-A (SIR-A) antenna on the second space shuttle mission (OFT-2)

A definition is derived for an antenna configuration fixed-mounted high in the payload bay on the hybrid OFT-2 pallet which is compatible with Orbiter interface requirements. Tests showed that the combination of the selected panels and the designed corporate feed meets SIR-A performance requirement of 33 db gain. The effects of Orbiter structure proximity on performance were determined by scale model tests to be negligible. The potential for improved performance during subsequent reflights includes a multiple-beam capability and dual polarization.

Comparison of several NASTRAN analytical techniques for large structures

In order to plan for the finite element structural analysis of future aircraft, five static analysis techniques using the MacNeal-Schwendler Corporation version of NASTRAN were evaluated. The structure was analyzed as: (1) a single model with a symmetric loading condition; (2) a single model with symmetric/nonsymmetric loading conditions; (3) three substructures in three phases using tape storage with a symmetric loading condition; (4) three superelements using data base storage with a symmetric loading condition; and (5) three superelements using data base storage with cyclic symmetry for symmetric/nonsymmetric loading conditions. The superelement techniques proved superior to the single model approaches by reducing computer time for redesign work by as much as 70 percent.

Advanced program weight control system

The design and implementation of the Advanced Program Weight Control System (APWCS) are reported. The APWCS system allows the coordination of vehicle weight reduction programs well in advance so as to meet mandated requirements of fuel economy imposed by government and to achieve corporate targets of vehicle weights. The system is being used by multiple engineering offices to track weight reduction from inception to eventual production. The projected annualized savings due to the APWCS system is over $2.5 million.

Efficient searching and sorting applications using an associative array processor

The purpose of this paper is to describe a method of searching and sorting data by using some of the unique capabilities of an associative array processor. To understand the application, the associative array processor is described in detail. In particular, the content addressable memory and flip network are discussed because these two unique elements give the associative array processor the power to rapidly sort and search. A simple alphanumeric sorting example is explained in hardware and software terms. The hardware used to explain the application is the STARAN (Goodyear Aerospace Corporation) associative array processor. The software used is the APPLE (Array Processor Programming Language) programming language. Some applications of the array processor are discussed. This summary tries to differentiate between the techniques of the sequential machine and the associative array processor.

Analysis of complex decisionmaking processes

The analysis of corporate decisionmaking processes related to major system developments is unusually difficult because of the number of decisionmakers involved in the process and the long development cycle. A method for analyzing such decision processes is developed and illustrated through its application to the analysis of the commercial jet engine development process. The method uses interaction matrices as the key tool for structuring the problem, recording data, and analyzing the data to establish the rank order of the major factors affecting development decisions. In the example, the use of interaction matrices permitted analysts to collect and analyze approximately 50 factors that influenced decisions during the four phases of the development cycle, and to determine the key influencers of decisions at each development phase. The results of this study indicate that the cost of new technology installed on an aircraft is the prime concern of the engine manufacturer.

Space Shuttle nozzle review

Two Space Shuttle solid propellant rocket motor (SRM) nozzles have been tested, both successfully. This paper summarizes the results of these tests. The SRM nozzle was designed and fabricated at the Wasatch Division of Thiokol Corporation. It is over 13 ft. long, has a 54.43 in. initial throat diameter, and weighs over 11 tons. A flex bearing is employed for thrust vector control. Design and acceptance testing summaries are presented, along with the post-test results, erosion and actuation data.

OGO program summary, supplement 1

Scientific results from OGO-5 and OGO-6 experiments are summarized and approximately 200 citations are included to update the 1975 OGO bibliography. Personal author, subject, and corporate source indexes are included. The supplement follows the same format as that of the OGO Program Summary; it does not repeat the finalized information in the original publication, which should be consulted for indexes of experiments, experimenters, institutions, and the glossary of abbreviations and acronyms.
