Systematic Crosstalk Mitigation for Superconducting Qubits via Frequency-Aware Compilation

One of the key challenges in current Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) computers is to control a quantum system with high-fidelity quantum gates. There are many reasons a quantum gate can go wrong - for superconducting transmon qubits in particular, one major source of gate error is the unwanted crosstalk between neighboring qubits due to a phenomenon called frequency crowding. We motivate a systematic approach for understanding and mitigating the crosstalk noise when executing near-term quantum programs on superconducting NISQ computers. Here, we present a general software solution to alleviate frequency crowding by systematically tuning qubit frequencies according to input programs, trading parallelism for higher gate fidelity when necessary. The net result is that our work dramatically improves the crosstalk resilience of tunable-qubit, fixed-coupler hardware, matching or surpassing other more complex architectural designs such as tunable-coupler systems. On NISQ benchmarks, we improve worst-case program success rate by 13.3x on average, compared to existing traditional serialization strategies.

Heave Plate Hydrodynamic Coefficients for Floating Offshore Wind Turbines - A Compilation of Data

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory's OpenFAST software is utilized by academics and industry professionals alike to simulate offshore wind turbines. The software's modeling of hydrodynamic loads on heave plates attached to these structures relies on user-specified hydrodynamic coefficients. To guide the proper selection of these coefficients and potentially develop a new functionality within OpenFAST that automatically prescribes and/or adjusts the heave-plate hydrodynamic coefficients, we review past literature to examine the dependence of the added mass, damping, and drag coefficients on various relevant nondimensional parameters, including the Keulegan-Carpenter number, the frequency parameter, and the plate thickness ratio. Existing data in the literature show strong dependence of the hydrodynamic coefficients on the Keulegan-Carpenter number. We observe consistent trends across a range of different plate geometry, plate porosity, and flow conditions. Secondary dependence of the coefficients on the frequency parameter and plate thickness ratio is also present.

Quantum Search Compiler (Qsearch) v2.0

Quantum Gate Synthesis is the process of taking a desired quantum gate operation, in this case specified as a unitary matrix, and decomposing it into a list of operations that can actually be performed on a quantum computer. Qsearch is an implementation of a quantum synthesis algorithm based on combining A* search with numerical optimization. It is designed to minimize CNOT count at the expense of having a long runtime. It produces particularly efficient quantum circuits in terms of CNOT count, up until about 4 qubits. It is generally impractical to run Qsearch on circuits with more than 4 qubits, but it can be used as a subroutine in algorithms designed to work with these larger circuits. Qsearch takes the form of a Python package, taking advantage of Numpy and Scipy, with part of the package written in Rust and taking advantage of OpenBLAS, NLOPT, and Google Ceres for faster runtime.

Compilation of Site Names and Spatial Extents for Sites in the Hanford Site Disposition Database

Several analyses that will be completed as part of the Hanford Composite Analysis (CA) and Cumulative Impact Evaluation (CIE) require the extents of facilities, waste sites, and other locations on the Hanford Site. The purpose of this calculation is to provide spatial extents and consistent naming convention for those locations used as part of the analyses in a single dataset. This calculation documents the process used to develop the dataset.

A Compilation of Historical Data on Hagan Drop Testing with Results

The Hagan nuclear material storage container was designed in the late 1990’s to provide a robust container for daily use, safe transport within the plutonium facility PF-4, and storage of nuclear material for up to twenty years. There are currently >3000 loaded Hagan containers in use at TA-55. The majority of these are in the TA-55 vault, but they are also used in safes and in floor locations on the main floor of PF-4. The original design criteria are given below

Biota Modeling in EPA’s Preliminary Remediation Goal and Dose Compliance Concentration Calculators for Use in EPA Superfund Risk Assessment: Explanation of Intake Rate Derivation, Transfer Factor Compilation, and Mass Loading Factor Sources

The Preliminary Remediation Goal (PRG) and Dose Compliance Concentration (DCC) calculators are screening level risk assessment tools that set forth the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) recommended approaches and currently available risk assessment guidance for response actions at Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) sites, commonly known as Superfund. The environmental screening levels derived by the PRG and DCC calculators are used to identify isotopes contributing the highest risk and dose as well as establish preliminary remediation goals. Each calculator has residential gardening and subsistence farmer exposure scenarios that model transfer of contaminants from soil and water into various types of biota (crops and animal products). New publications of human intake rates of biota; farm animal intakes of water, soil, and fodder; and soil to plant interactions require updates be implemented into the PRG and DCC calculators. Recent improvements in the biota modeling for these calculators include newly derived biota intake rates, enhanced soil mass loading factors (MLFs), and more comprehensive soil to plant transfer factors (BV’s) and soil to tissue transfer factors (TFs) for animals. New biota have been added in both the produce and animal products categories that greatly improve the accuracy and utility of the PRG and DCC calculators and encompass greater geographic diversity on a national and international scale.

Compilation and Evaluation of Data from Groundwater Impounded within the U12n and U12t Tunnels, Rainier and Aqueduct Mesas, Nevada National Security Site

The Department of Defense (DOD) Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Environmental Management Nevada Program (EM NV) conducted routine physical and geochemical monitoring of water impounded behind impermeable structures placed within the U12n and U12t tunnels on the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) (formerly the Nevada Test Site [NTS]). Desert Research Institute (DRI) conducted a semiquantitative evaluation of pressure data to determine the extent to which the tunnels have been inundated and a qualitative evaluation of monitored geochemical parameters to determine if trends exist that were indicative of hydrologic and/or geochemical processes operating behind the tunnel plugs. Data were also evaluated to determine if monitored radiological parameters exceeded primary standards associated with the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) (40 C.F.R. § 141.66).
