High-field superconducting nested coil magnet

Superconducting magnet, employed in conjunction with five types of superconducting cables in a nested solenoid configuration, produces total, central magnetic field strengths approaching 70 kG. The multiple coils permit maximum information on cable characteristics to be gathered from one test.

Bubble-domain circuit wafer evaluation coil set

Coil structures have been designed to permit nondestructive testing of bubble wafers. Wafers can be electrically or optically inspected and operated from quasi-static frequency to maximum device operating frequency.

Zero-angle helical coil

Device is constructed of bimetallic stock material formed into segments of small diameters and fastened together by metal strips. Coil is useful in various types of actuators, such as temperature controls.

Simplified deflection-coil linearity testing

Mask placed over face of image-dissecting photomultiplier tube has precision array of pinholes that permit light to impinge on tube at known points. Signals are fed to deflection coil which sweeps beam across each point without complex operator procedures.

Differential-Coil Eddy-Current Material Sorter

Small metal or other electrically conductive parts of same shape but different composition quickly sorted with differential-coil eddy-current sorter. Developed to distinguish between turbine blades of different alloys, hardnesses, and residual stress, sorter generally applicable to parts of simple and complex shape.

Application of induction coil measurements to the study of superalloy hot corrosion and oxidation

The assessment of the degree of hot corrosion attack on nickel based alloys is a difficult task, especially when the definition specifies that it must be in terms of metal consumed and even more difficult if the measurement must be nondestructive. The inductance of a solenoid coil responds to changes in volume of fill and composition of metal cores, therefore, it may be used for nondestructive measurement of hot corrosion. The hot corrosion of U700 was studied at 900 C in a Mach 0.3 flame doped with 0.85 wppm of sodium. The change of inductance was found to define the known corrosion behavior and to suggest its use as a tool with predictive capabilities. Sufficient sensitivity exists to detect oxidation of this alloy at 900 C.

Role of long-wavelength degrees of freedom in the rod-to-coil transition in polymers

An analytical model is fitted to experimental data to show that rod-to-coil (RTC) transformations in single strand polymers (SSPs) are close to true phase transitions. The RTC are known to occur when the temperature or pH of a solvent in which the SSP is immersed is varied abruptly. Long wavelength degrees of freedom in the SSPs induce long range interactions in the molecule which lead to a first order phase transition. The Landau formalism suggests that a long-range ordered state can appear at a low temperature. A microscopic model of the phonon degrees of freedom identifies the nonzero temperature threshold at which the phase transition will occur. The phenomenology described is similar to a previous model for transitions in double-strand polymers.

Segmented Coil Fails In Steps

Electromagnetic coil degrades in steps when faults occur, continues to operate at reduced level instead of failing catastrophically. Made in segments connected in series and separated by electrically insulating barriers. Fault does not damage adjacent components or create hazard. Used to control valves in such critical applications as cooling systems of power generators and chemical process equipment, where flammable liquids or gases handled. Also adapts to electrical control of motors.

Adjustable Induction-Heating Coil

Improved design for induction-heating work coil facilitates optimization of heating in different metal specimens. Three segments adjusted independently to obtain desired distribution of temperature. Reduces time needed to achieve required temperature profiles.

Improved Voice-Coil Actuators Have Lower Copper Losses

Improved design concept for electromagnetic linear-motion actuators of loudspeaker-voice-coil type reduces both copper losses (dissipation of power in electrical resistances of windings) and magnetic interference with other equipment. Includes closed magnetic circuit, which suppresses fringing flux. Pr/Fe/B permanent magnets yield better performance at lower temperatures. Intended for use where power supplies limited, heating must be minimized, and/or adequate performance at temperatures far below ambient required.

Tool Removes Coil-Spring Thread Inserts

Tool removes coil-spring thread inserts from threaded holes. Threads into hole, pries insert loose, grips insert, then pulls insert to thread it out of hole. Effects essentially reverse of insertion process to ease removal and avoid further damage to threaded inner surface of hole.
