Microflora in soils of desert regions

Desert soil samples, collected using aseptic techniques, are low in organic matter and cation exchange capacity. Aerobic and microaerophilic bacteria are most abundant, next are algae and molds. Chemical and physical properties are determined by standard procedures, including the Kjeldahl method and the use of Munsell soil color charts.

Thermodynamics of rock forming crystalline solutions

Analysis of phase diagrams and cation distributions within crystalline solutions as means of obtaining thermodynamic data on rock forming crystalline solutions is discussed along with some aspects of partitioning of elements in coexisting phases. Crystalline solutions, components in a silicate mineral, and chemical potentials of these components were defined. Examples were given for calculating thermodynamic mixing functions in the CaW04-SrW04, olivine-chloride solution, and orthopyroxene systems.

Developable Images Produced by X-rays Using the Nickel Hypophosphite System. 1 X-ray Sensitive Salts

Twenty-eight crystalline salts were X-irradiated and treated with an ammoniacal nickel hypophosphite solution. Treatment (development) of six of the salts resulted in precipitation of nickel metal. The developable salts were four hypophosphites, sodium phosphite, and nickel formate. A mechanism is proposed for the process based on the postulate that micro amounts of hydrogen atoms are formed during the radiation step. During development, these hydrogen atoms cause the formation of nucleation sites of nickel metal. In turn, these sites catalyze further reduction of the nickel cations by the hypophosphite. The results are discussed in terms of application of the process to the formation of developable latent images.

Study directed at development of an implantable biotelemetry ion detector

A literature search was conducted to currently update known information in the field of ion-selective electrodes. The review attempts to identify present trends in cation and anions selective electrodes pertinent to the area of bioimplantable units. An electronic circuit was designed to provide the high impedance interface between the ion-selective sensors and signal-processing equipment. The resulting design emphasized the need for low power and miniaturization. Many of the circuits were constructed and used to evaluate the ion-selective electrodes. A cuvette capable of holding the ion-selective and the reference electrodes was designed and constructed. This equipment was used to evaluate commercially available ion-selective electrodes and the electrodes designed and constructed in the study. The results of the electrode tests are included.

Study of permeability characteristics of membranes

Pressure-permeation experiments were performed with the concentration-clamp cell. Streaming potentials and hydraulic permeabilities were measured for an AMF C-103 cation-exchange membrane bounded by 0.1 N NaCl solutions. The streaming potential calculated from the slope of the recorded potential differences versus the applied pressure, yields a value of 1.895 millivolt/dekabar. When comparison with other membranes of similar characteristics could be made, good agreement was found. The values of the hydraulic permeability varied somewhat with the applied pressure difference and are between 1.3 x 10 to the minus 8th power and 3.9 x 10 to the minus 8th power sq cm/dekabar-sec. The specific hydraulic permeabilities were also calculated and compared with data from the literature. Fair agreement was found. The diffusion coefficient of the chloride ion in the AMF C-103 membrane was calculated, using Fick's first law of diffusion based on ion concentrations calculated from the Donnan equilibrium concentration of Cl(-).

Study of permeability characteristics of membranes

A method is reported for evaluating transport experiments with membranes which is based on conservative fluxes, i.e. fluxes of quantities which do not vary across the membrane in the steady state. Conductance coefficients were calculated for the system: 0.05 N NaCl - C-103 cation-exchange membrane- 0.1 N NaCl. It is concluded that this method can be used to characterize any system of the type - solution-membrane-solution.

Rare-gas effects on metabolism and inert gas narcosis

The detailed examination is reported of the theory that narcosis results from expansion of the cell membrane under high partial pressures. The research is partially based on the hypothesis that, like oxygen toxicity, the mechanism of metabolic effects of rare gases may be similar at both low and high pressures and are simply more observable at high pressures. Using adult female goats, the parameters measured include oxygen consumption, CO2 production, respiration rate, heart rate, rectal and skin temperatures and the analysis of electroencephalograms and evoked response. Additionally, the specific activity is measured of plasma glucose subsequent to injection of glucose-UL-C-14, intravenous infusion, specific activity of expired CO2, unesterified fatty acid levels and whole blood lactate-to-pyruvate ratios. Also studied were the effects of acetylsalicylic acid, vitamin E and cationic detergents (which alleviate narcosis) upon metabolic changes induced by high pressure narcosis.

Elastic properties of alpha quartz and the alkali halides based on an interatomic force model.

A two-body central-force atomic model can be used to describe accurately the elastic properties of alpha quartz if the nontetrahedral O:O forces are included. The strength of the Si:O interaction has little effect on the bulk modulus. The technique is sufficiently general to allow calculations of the elastic properties of a specified structure under arbitrary pressure from a complete description of the interatomic forces. The elastic constants for the NaCl structure and the CsCl structure are examined. Our model includes two-body, central, anion-anion, anion-cation, and electrostatic interactions.

Deformation processes in forging ceramics

The deformation processes involved in the forging of refractory ceramic oxides were investigated. A combination of mechanical testing and forging was utilized to investigate both the flow and fracture processes involved. Deformation studies of very fine grain Al203 revealed an apparent transition in behavior, characterized by a shift in the strain rate sensitivity from 0.5 at low stresses to near unity at higher stresses. The behavior is indicative of a shift in control between two dependent mechanisms, one of which is indicated to be cation limited diffusional creep with significant boundary enhancement. The possible contributions of slip, indicated by crystallographic texture, interface control of the diffusional creep and inhomogeneous boundary sliding are also discussed. Additional experiments indicated an independence of deformation behavior on MgO doping and retained hot pressing impurities, at least for ultrafine grained material, and also an independence of test atmosphere.

Ortho- and clinopyroxene compositions in ordinary chondrites and related blander model calculation procedures

Chemical analyses of the orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene compositions in chondrites are reported. Standard microprobe techniques to 15 kilovolts, 0.03 microamperes, and 40 second counting time were employed. Duplicate analyses were conducted on three grains of each opx and cpx together with two different raw data correction methods as checks on analytical precision and correction procedures. Only those analytical summations of between 99.20 and 100.80 weight percent, and cation summations between 3.980 and 4.020 (based on 6 oxygens) were used.

Site preferences of Ni/2+/ and Co/2+/ in clinopyroxene and olivine - Limitations of the statistical approach.

Criticism of a statistical approach used by Dasgupta (1972) in analyzing Snyder's (1959) chemical data for minerals from the Duluth Complex in Minnesota. Apart from obvious mathematical objections to citing correlation coefficients to four significant figures from Snyder's relatively inaccurate analytical data, several more fundamental criticisms are leveled at the statistical approach of Dasgupta. These relate to compositional zoning and disequilibrium in the minerals, inhomogeneities of the samples caused by inclusions and exsolved phases, measured site population data for the major cations in olivines and pyroxenes, and the importance of coupled substitutions in the crystal structures. It is concluded that the crystal field predictions of relative enrichments of Ni(2+) and Co(2+) ions in olivine and pyroxene structures have not been disproved by Dasgupta's statistical approach.

A quest for porphyrins in lunar soil - Samples from Apollo 11, 12 and 14.

Analyses for porphyrins in the lunar samples were carried out by extracting the lunar soils as received by organic solvents followed by analytical demetallation using methanesulfonic acid after which free-base porphyrins, if present, were recovered and demonstrably recomplexed with divalent cations. Samples from Apollo 11 showed the presence of fluorescent substances attributed to exhaust from the descent engine. One sample from Apollo 12 showed pigments resembling porphyrins. The Apollo 14 results were negative.
