Chemical Compositions of Red Giant Stars from Habitable Zone Planet Finder Spectroscopy

We have used the Habitable Zone Planet Finder (HPF) to gather high-resolution, high signal-to-noise near-infrared spectra of 13 field red horizontal branch (RHB) stars, one open cluster giant, and one very metal-poor halo red giant. The HPF spectra cover the 0.81–1.28 μm wavelength range of the zyJ bands, partially filling the gap between the optical (0.4–1.0 μm) and infrared (1.5–2.4 μm) spectra already available for the program stars. We derive abundances of 17 species from LTE-based computations involving equivalent widths and spectrum syntheses, and estimate abundance corrections for the species that are most affected by departures from LTE in RHB stars. Generally good agreement is found between HPF-based metallicities and abundance ratios and those from the optical and infrared spectral regions. Light element transitions dominate the HPF spectra of these red giants, and HPF data can be used to derive abundances from species with poor or no representation in optical spectra (e.g., C i, P i, S i, K i). Attention is drawn to the HPF abundances in two field solar-metallicity RHB stars of special interest: one with an extreme carbon isotope ratio, and one with a rare, very large lithium content. The latter star is unique in our sample in exhibiting very strong He i 10830 Å absorption. The abundances of the open cluster giant concur with those derived from other wavelength regions. Detections of C i and S i in HD 122563 are reported, yielding the lowest metallicity determination of [S/Fe] from more than one multiplet.

Top-Down Fabrication of Atomic Patterns in Twisted Bilayer Graphene

Atomic-scale engineering typically involves bottom-up approaches, leveraging parameters such as temperature, partial pressures, and chemical affinity to promote spontaneous arrangement of atoms. These parameters are applied globally, resulting in atomic-scale features scattered probabilistically throughout the material. In a top-down approach, different regions of the material are exposed to different parameters, resulting in structural changes varying on the scale of the resolution. In this work, the application of global and local parameters is combined in an aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) to demonstrate atomic-scale precision patterning of atoms in twisted bilayer graphene. The focused electron beam is used to define attachment points for foreign atoms through the controlled ejection of carbon atoms from the graphene lattice. The sample environment is staged with nearby source materials such that the sample temperature can induce migration of the source atoms across the sample surface. Under these conditions, the electron-beam (top-down) enables carbon atoms in the graphene to be replaced spontaneously by diffusing adatoms (bottom-up). Using image-based feedback control, arbitrary patterns of atoms and atom clusters are attached to the twisted bilayer graphene with limited human interaction. Finally, the role of substrate temperature on adatom and vacancy diffusion is explored by first-principles simulations.

Morphology–Diffusivity Relationships in Fluorine-Free Random Terpolymers for Proton-Exchange Membranes

Here, using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate the morphology and transport properties of a new family of fluorine-free terpolymers designed as proton-exchange membranes. Simulated random terpolymers consist of three monomers with a 5-carbon backbone with a phenylsulfonate, phenyl, or no pendant group and have ion exchange capacities (IECs) ranging from 1.06–4.14 mmol/g. At a hydration level of 9, cluster analysis reveals macrophase separation between water and terpolymers with IEC < 2.1 mmol/g and continuous, percolated hydrophilic and hydrophobic nanoscale domains at higher IECs. Channel width distribution analysis of the percolated morphologies revealed that more hydrophobic units produce less uniform channels. Decreasing the surface area per sulfonate group and increasing the fractal dimension of the hydrophilic domains correlate with increased water diffusivity, due to a more acidic interface and more isotropic water channels. Relative to the previously studied phenylsulfonate homopolymer, these terpolymers with lower IECs have only modestly lower water diffusion, and we anticipate other advantages related to processability.

Interactions between fullerene derivatives and biological systems

Attention towards nanoparticles from the pharmaceutical and biomedical fields has significantly increased due to their attractive surface modification, high drug-loading, and improved pharmacokinetics. Fullerenes, an allotrope of carbon, stand out for their molecularly precise structure, potent radical-scavenging activity, photoactivatable reactive-oxygen species generation, and ability to definitively confine metal atoms and clusters. Accordingly, fullerene systems have been applied in various biological contexts, including increased and controlled drug delivery, antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and photodynamic therapy, and magnetic resonance imaging. Ultimately, the pleiotropic activity of fullerenes, coupled with its precise structure and functionalization, can realize precise and tailorable medicines. Here, different from some excellent reviews focusing on the structure and chemistry of fullerene derivatives and their biomedical applications, this review highlights the interaction of fullerene materials with biological systems, with insights into their structural influence on their interactions with the cellular environment.

Unconventional nozzle tradeoff study

Plug cluster engine design, performance, weight, envelope, operational characteristics, development cost, and payload capability, were evaluated and comparisons were made with other space tug engine candidates using oxygen/hydrogen propellants. Parametric performance data were generated for existing developed or high technology thrust chambers clustered around a plug nozzle of very large diameter. The uncertainties in the performance prediction of plug cluster engines with large gaps between the modules (thrust chambers) were evaluated. The major uncertainty involves, the aerodynamics of the flow from discrete nozzles, and the lack of this flow to achieve the pressure ratio corresponding to the defined area ratio for a plug cluster. This uncertainty was reduced through a cluster design that consists of a plug contour that is formed from the cluster of high area ratio bell nozzles that have been scarfed. Light-weight, high area ratio, bell nozzles were achieved through the use of AGCarb (carbon-carbon cloth) nozzle extensions.

Spectral characteristics and the extent of paleosols of the Palouse formation

Spectral relationships were investigated for several bare soil fields which were in summer fallow rotation on the date of the imagery. Printouts of each band were examined and compared to aerial photography. Bands with dissimilar reflectance patterns for known areas were then combined using ratio techniques which were proven useful in other studies (Williams, 1983). Selected ratios were Thematic Mapper (TM) 1/TM4, TM3/TM4, and TM5/TM4. Cluster analyses and Baysian and Fastclass classifier images were produced using the three ratio images. Plots of cluster analysis outputs revealed distinct groupings of reflectance data representing green crops, ripened crops, soil and green plants, and bare soil. Bare soil was represented by a line of clusters on plots of the ratios TM5/TM4 and TM3/TM4. The soil line was investigated further to determine factors involved in the distributin of clusters alone the line. The clusters representing the bare soil line were also studied by plotting the Tm5/TM4, TM1/TM4 dimension. A total of 76 soil samples were gathered and analyzed for organic carbon.

A Correlated Ab Initio Study of Linear Carbon-Chain Radicals C(sub n)H (n=2-7)

Linear carbon-chain radicals C(sub n) H for n = 2-7 have been studied with correlation consistent valence and core-valence basis sets and the coupled cluster method RCCSD(T). Equilibrium structures, rotational constants, and dipole moments are reported and compared with available experimental data. The ground state of the even-n series changes from 2Sigma(+) to 2Pi as the chain is extended. For C4H, the 2Sigma(+) state was found to lie only 72 cm(exp -1) below the 2Pi state in the estimated complete basis set limit for valence correlation. The C2H(-) and C3H(-) anions have also been characterized.

Porting fragmentation methods to GPUs using an OpenMP API: Offloading the resolution-of-the-identity second-order Møller–Plesset perturbation method

Here, using an OpenMP Application Programming Interface, the resolution-of-the-identity second-order Møller–Plesset perturbation (RI-MP2) method has been off-loaded onto graphical processing units (GPUs), both as a standalone method in the GAMESS electronic structure program and as an electron correlation energy component in the effective fragment molecular orbital (EFMO) framework. First, a new scheme has been proposed to maximize data digestion on GPUs that subsequently linearizes data transfer from central processing units (CPUs) to GPUs. Second, the GAMESS Fortran code has been interfaced with GPU numerical libraries (e.g., NVIDIA cuBLAS and cuSOLVER) for efficient matrix operations (e.g., matrix multiplication, matrix decomposition, and matrix inversion). The standalone GPU RI-MP2 code shows an increasing speedup of up to 7.5× using one NVIDIA V100 GPU with one IBM 42-core P9 CPU for calculations on fullerenes of increasing size from 40 to 260 carbon atoms using the 6-31G(d)/cc-pVDZ-RI basis sets. A single Summit node with six V100s can compute the RI-MP2 correlation energy of a cluster of 175 water molecules using the correlation consistent basis sets cc-pVDZ/cc-pVDZ-RI containing 4375 atomic orbitals and 14 700 auxiliary basis functions in ~0.85 h. In the EFMO framework, the GPU RI-MP2 component shows near linear scaling for a large number of V100s when computing the energy of an 1800-atom mesoporous silica nanoparticle in a bath of 4000 water molecules. The parallel efficiencies of the GPU RI-MP2 component with 2304 and 4608 V100s are 98.0% and 96.1%, respectively.

Ion clusters and the Venus ultraviolet haze layer.

The daytime ionosphere of Venus is observed between 100 and 500 km altitude. Below 100 km ion clustering processes combine with the low temperature at the mesopause to form coagulates, giving rise to the UV haze layer which has frequently been observed. Ion ratios involving carbon dioxide are considered, taking into consideration also the possibility of a presence of nitrogen and oxygen in the Venus atmosphere.

The Experiment for Cryogenic Large-aperture Intensity Mapping (EXCLAIM)

Submillimeter and far-IR spectroscopy provides insight into galaxy evolution through measurement of atomic and molecular line emission. The EXperiment for Cryogenic Large-Aperture Intensity Mapping (EXCLAIM) is a cryogenic balloon-borne instrument designed to carry out intensity mapping to measure the cumulative redshifted line emission from carbon monoxide and singly-ionized carbon to probe star formation in windows from the present to z=3.5. During this time, the rate of star formation dropped dramatically, while dark matter continued to cluster. Intensity mapping permits a blind and complete survey of emitting gas through statistics of cumulative brightness fluctuations. EXCLAIM achieves high sensitivity using a cryogenic telescope coupled to six integrated spectrometers with spectral resolving power R=512 and employing microwave kinetic inductance detectors. Here we summarize the status of the mission.
