Accessibility and Mechanical Stability of Nanoporous Zinc Oxide and Aluminum Oxide Coatings Synthesized via Infiltration of Polymer Templates

The conformal nanoporous inorganic coatings with accessible pores that are stable under applied thermal and mechanical stresses represent an important class of materials used in the design of sensors, optical coatings, and biomedical systems. Here, we synthesize porous AlO x and ZnO coatings by the sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS) of two types of polymers that enable the design of porous conformal coatings—polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIM) and block co-polymer (BCP) templates. Using quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), we show that alumina precursors infiltrate both polymer templates four times more efficiently than zinc oxide precursors. Using the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) technique, we provide a comprehensive study on the room temperature accessibility to water and ethanol of pores in block copolymers (BCPs) and porous polymer templates using polystyrene-block-poly-4-vinyl pyridine (PS75-b-P4VP25) and polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1), polymer templates modified by swelling, and porous inorganic coatings such as AlO x and ZnO synthesized by SIS using such templates. Importantly, we demonstrate that no structural damage occurs in inorganic nanoporous AlO x and ZnO coatings synthesized via infiltration of the polymer templates during the water freezing/melting cycling tests, suggesting excellent mechanical stability of the coatings, even though the hardness of the inorganic nanoporous coating is affected by the polymer and precursor selections. We show that the hardness of the coatings is further improved by their annealing at 900 °C for 1 h, though for all the cases except ZnO obtained using the BCP template, this annealing has a negligible effect on the porosity of the material, as is confirmed by the consistency in the optical characteristics. These findings unravel new potential for the materials being used across various environment and temperature conditions.

Depolymerization as a Design Strategy: Depolymerization Etching of Polymerization-Induced Microphase Separations

Thermally triggered depolymerization has traditionally been viewed through the lens of sustainability and recycling, not as a constructive tool for materials design. Herein, we show that selective, thermally triggered depolymerization to gaseous monomer serves as a solvent-free strategy for generating porosity in nanostructured polymer materials, offering a means to bypass the mass transport limitations inherent in conventional solution-based etching. As a demonstration platform, we employed polymerization-induced microphase separation (PIMS) to generate disordered bicontinuous block copolymer structures with embedded depolymerizable domains. By incorporating a methacrylate block susceptible to thermal depolymerization within a cross-linked, depolymerization-resistant styrenic matrix, we developed a process we term depolymerization etching of polymerization-induced microphase separations (DEPIMS). This approach enables highly selective and efficient domain removal via reversion to monomer to produce mesoporous materials with high surface areas (>200 m 2 /g). Subsequent surface functionalization yielded mesoporous adsorbents with tunable uptake kinetics and among the highest dye adsorption capacities reported for PIMS-derived materials, demonstrating the adaptability of the DEPIMS platform for chemical separations. DEPIMS can also be extended to a gram-scale, one-pot approach to yield mesoporous materials with recoverable monomer in under 12 h. These findings reposition thermal depolymerization from a sustainability tool to a broadly enabling strategy for scalable, on-demand fabrication of functional nanostructured materials.

Dispersity-Driven Stabilization of Coexisting Morphologies in Asymmetric Diblock Copolymer Thin Films

Despite decades of research, characterization of the effects of polymer chain dispersity on the structural properties of block copolymer thin films remains challenging. Here we present an integrated experimental and modeling approach to characterize the morphology of thin films containing asymmetric diblock copolymers. Specifically, we used synergistic neutron reflectivity (NR) and self-consistent field theory (SCFT)-based modeling to realize unexpected morphology of thin films containing asymmetric copolymers. Using NR, a highly stable and reproducible mixed phase of coexisting cylinders and lamellar domains was discovered in asymmetric poly(deuterated-styrene-b-n butyl methacrylate) (dPS-PBMA) copolymer thin films containing 34% volume fraction of dPS. SCFT reveals how to obtain such a thermodynamically stable morphology in the presence of disperse majority block and asymmetric interactions of polymer species with surfaces. Stabilization of the coexisting domains is a consequence of the depth segregation based on chain-length distribution. The asymmetric chains microphase-separate into cylindrical domains close to the substrate and near-symmetric chains form lamellar domains at the air interface. In the absence of dispersity, the coexistence of cylindrical and lamellar domains is thermodynamically unstable because of the absence of depth segregation. Overall, such an effect of dispersity on diblock copolymer thin-film morphology reveals a unique and powerful strategy to create coexisting nanoscale domains and tailor properties of thin films.

Circular olefin copolymers made de novo from ethylene and α-olefins

Ethylene/α-olefin copolymers are produced in huge scale and widely used, but their after-use disposal has caused plastic pollution problems. Their chemical inertness made chemical re/upcycling difficult. Ideally, PE materials should be made de novo to have a circular closed-loop lifecycle. However, synthesis of circular ethylene/α-olefin copolymers, including high-volume, linear low-density PE as well as high-value olefin elastomers and block copolymers, presents a particular challenge due to difficulties in introducing branches while simultaneously installing chemical recyclability and directly using industrial ethylene and α-olefin feedstocks. Here we show that coupling of industrial coordination copolymerization of ethylene and α-olefins with a designed functionalized chain-transfer agent, followed by modular assembly of the resulting AB telechelic polyolefin building blocks by polycondensation, affords a series of ester-linked PE-based copolymers. These new materials not only retain thermomechanical properties of PE-based materials but also exhibit full chemical circularity via simple transesterification and markedly enhanced adhesion to polar surfaces.

Synthesis of Poly(ionic Liquid)s-block-poly(methyl Methacrylate) Copolymer-Grafted Silica Particle Brushes with Enhanced CO 2 Permeability and Mechanical Performance

Poly(ionic liquid) (PIL)-based block copolymers are of particular interest as they combine the specific properties of PILs with the self-assembling behaviors of block copolymers, broadening the range of potential applications for PIL-based materials. In this work, three particle brushes: SiO 2 -g-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), SiO 2 -g-PIL, and SiO 2 -g-PMMA-b-PIL were prepared through surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization. Unlike the homogeneous homopolymer particle brushes, the block copolymer particle brush SiO 2 -g-PMMA-b-PIL exhibited a bimodal chain architecture and unique phase-separated morphology, which were confirmed by size-exclusion chromatography and transmission electron microscopy. In addition, the influence of the introduction of the PMMA segment on the gas separation and mechanical performance of the PIL-containing block copolymer particle brushes were investigated. A significant improvement of Young’s modulus was observed in the SiO 2 -g-PMMA-b-PIL compared to the SiO 2 -g-PIL bulk films; meanwhile, their gas separation performances (CO 2 permeability and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity) were the same, which demonstrates the possibility of improving the mechanical properties of PIL-based particle brushes without compromising their gas separation performance.

Imide/Arylene Ether Copolymers Containing Phosphine Oxide

Phosphine oxide groups react with oxygen to form protective phosphate surface layers. Series of imide/arylene ether block copolymers containing phosphine oxide units in backbone synthesized and characterized. In comparison with commercial polyimide, these copolymers display better resistance to etching by oxygen plasma. Tensile strengths and tensile moduli greater than those of polyarylene ether homopolymer. Combination of properties makes copolymers attractive for films, coatings, adhesives, and composite matrices where resistance to atomic oxygen needed.

Engineering endosomolytic nanocarriers of diverse morphologies using confined impingement jet mixing

The clinical translation of many biomolecular therapeutics has been hindered by undesirable pharmacokinetic (PK) properties, inadequate membrane permeability, poor endosomal escape and cytosolic delivery, and/or susceptibility to degradation. Overcoming these challenges merits the development of nanoscale drug carriers (nanocarriers) to improve the delivery of therapeutic cargo. Herein, we implement a flash nanoprecipitation (FNP) approach to produce nanocarriers of diverse vesicular morphologies by using various molecular weight PEG-bl-DEAEMA-co-BMA (PEG-DB) polymers. We demonstrated that FNP can produce uniform (PDI < 0.1) particles after 5 impingements, and that by varying the copolymer hydrophilic mass fraction, FNP enables access to a diverse variety of nanoarchitectures including micelles, unilamellar vesicles (polymersomes), and multi-compartment vesicles (MCVs). We synthesized a library of 2 kDa PEG block copolymers, with DEAEMA-co-BMA second block molecular weights of 3, 6, 12, 15, 20, and 30 kDa. All formulations were both pH responsive, endosomolytic, and capable of loading and cytosolically delivering small negatively charged molecules – albeit to different degrees. Using a B16.F10 melanoma model, we showcased the therapeutic potential of a lead FNP formulated PEG-DB nanocarrier, encapsulating the cyclic dinucleotide (CDN) cGAMP to activate the stimulator of interferon genes (STING) pathway in a therapeutically relevant context. Collectively, these data demonstrate that an FNP process can be used to formulate pH-responsive nanocarriers of diverse morphologies using a PEG-DB polymer system. As FNP is an industrially scalable process, these data address the critical translational challenge of producing PEG-DB nanoparticles at scale. Furthermore, the diverse morphologies produced may specialize in the delivery of distinct biomolecular cargos for other therapeutic applications, implicating the therapeutic potential of this platform in an array of disease applications.

Characterization of Gramicidin A in Triblock and Diblock Polymersomes and Hybrid Vesicles via Continuous Wave Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

Studying membrane proteins in a native environment is crucial to understanding their structural and/or functional studies. Often, widely accepted mimetic systems have limitations that prevent the study of some membrane proteins. Micelles, bicelles, and liposomes are common biomimetic systems but have problems with membrane compatibility, limited lipid composition, and heterogeneity. To overcome these limitations, polymersomes and hybrid vesicles have become popular alternatives. Polymersomes form from amphiphilic triblock or diblock copolymers and are considered more robust than liposomes. Hybrid vesicles are a combination of lipids and block copolymers that form vesicles composed of a mixture of the two. These hybrid vesicles are appealing because they have the native lipid environment of bilayers but also the stability and customizability of polymersomes. Gramicidin A was incorporated into these polymersomes and characterized using continuous wave electron paramagnetic resonance (CW-EPR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). EPR spectroscopy is a powerful biophysical technique used to study the structure and dynamic properties of membrane proteins in their native environment. Spectroscopic studies of gramicidin A have been limited to liposomes; in this study, the membrane peptide is studied in both polymersomes and hybrid vesicles using CW-EPR spectroscopy. Lineshape analysis of spin-labeled gramicidin A revealed linewidth broadening, suggesting that the thicker polymersome membranes restrict the motion of the spin label more when compared to liposome membranes. Statement of Significance: Understanding membrane proteins’ structures and functions is critical in the study of many diseases. In order to study them in a native environment, membrane mimetics must be developed that can be suitable for obtaining superior biophysical data quality to characterize structural dynamics while maintaining their native functions and structures. Many currently widely accepted methods have limitations, such as a loss of native structure and function, heterogeneous vesicle formation, restricted lipid types for the vesicle formation for many proteins, and experimental artifacts, which leaves rooms for the development of new biomembrane mimetics. The triblock and diblock polymersomes and hybrid versicles utilized in this study may overcome these limitations and provide the stability and customizability of polymersomes, keeping the biocompatibility and functionality of liposomes for EPR studies of membrane proteins.

Oxygen plasma resistant phosphine oxide containing imide/arylene copolymers

A series of oxygen plasma resistant imide/arylene ether copolymers were prepared by reacting anhydride-terminated poly(amide acids) and amine-terminated polyarylene ethers containing phosphine oxide units. Inherent viscosities for these copolymers ranged from 0.42 to 0.80 dL/g. After curing, the resulting copolymers had glass transition temperatures ranging from 224 C to 228 C. Solution cast films of the block copolymers were tough and flexible with tensile strength, tensile moduli, and elongation at break up to 16.1 ksi, 439 ksi, and 23 percent, respectively at 25 C and 9.1 ksi, 308 ksi and 97 percent, respectively at 150 C. The copolymers show a significant improvement in resistance to oxygen plasma when compared to the commercial polyimide Kapton. The imide/arylene ether copolymers containing phosphine oxide units are suitable as coatings, films, adhesives, and composite matrices.

Relationship between molecular structure and corrugations in self-assembled polypeptoid nanosheets revealed by cryogenic electron microscopy

Designing conformationally dynamic molecules that self-assemble into predictable nanostructures remains an important unmet challenge. This paper describes how atomic-scale cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) can be used to explore the relationship between molecular structure and self-assembly of block copolymers. We examined sheetlike micelles formed in water using a series of diblock copolypeptoids with the same hydrophilic block and three distinct crystalline hydrophobic blocks. Our cryo-TEM images revealed all the structures share nansoscale features, but differ in their intermolecular packing geometries. Different molecular arrangements, parallel and antiparallel V-shaped crystal motifs, were revealed by two-dimensional atomic-scale through-plane images. However, images from tilted samples revealed an unexpected feature when the hydrophobic polypeptoid block comprised phenyl rings with substituted bromine atoms at the para position. The nanosheets contained atomic-scale corrugations that were absent in the other systems which comprised unsubstituted aliphatic and aromatic side chains. We hypothesize that these corrugations are due to the dipolar characteristics of the brominated phenyl group and interactions between this group and water molecules. Direct synthesis of ordered mesoporous materials from thermoplastic elastomers

Abstract The ability to manufacture ordered mesoporous materials using low-cost precursors and scalable processes is essential for unlocking their enormous potential to enable advancement in nanotechnology. While templating-based methods play a central role in the development of mesoporous materials, several limitations exist in conventional system design, including cost, volatile solvent consumption, and attainable pore sizes from commercial templating agents. This work pioneers a new manufacturing platform for producing ordered mesoporous materials through direct pyrolysis of crosslinked thermoplastic elastomer-based block copolymers. Specifically, olefinic majority phases are selectively crosslinked through sulfonation reactions and subsequently converted to carbon, while the minority block can be decomposed to form ordered mesopores. We demonstrate that this process can be extended to different polymer precursors for synthesizing mesoporous polymer, carbon, and silica. Furthermore, the obtained carbons possess large mesopores, sulfur-doped carbon framework, with tailorable pore textures upon varying the precursor identities.

AI‐Accelerated Optimization of Self‐Assembled Organic Mixed Ionic‐Electronic Conductors (OMIEC) (Final Report)

This document describes research activities, products and outcomes of a DOE-funded program to help accelerate development of Organic Mixed Ionic Electronic Conductors (OMIECs) using neutron scattering and high-throughput experimentation. OMIECs are organic materials that conduct both ionic and electronic charge carriers. For these new OMIEC materials, self-assembling ion-conducting block copolymers (BCPs) are used as a structural template for electronic conducting polymers. This forms OMIECs with long-range structural order that can help facilitate long-range electronic transport. The conductive properties of OMIECs are closely associated with their structure, which is affected by solution conditions and polymer macromolecular designs. Thus high-throughput experimentation has been implemented to explore this large design space effectively. The BCP-CP OMIEC systems explored are composed of ion-conducting diblock or triblock copolymers containing polyethylene oxide (PEO), di(ethylene glycol) ethyl ether acrylate (DEGEEA) or poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate) (PEGMEA) hydrophilic blocks. These blocks will be coupled with either polypropylene oxide (PPO) or polyheptafluorobutyl acrylate (PHFBA) hydrophobic blocks to drive assembly. The electronic conducting component consists of several different types of conjugated polymers. Small angle scattering of neutrons and X-rays (SANS/SAXS) as well as electrochemical analysis have been coupled with modern algorithms for autonomous research using artificial intelligence (AI).

Reversible Photoswitching in Poly(2-oxazoline) Nanoreactors

This contribution reports light responsive catalytic nanoreactors based on poly(2-oxazoline) diblock copolymers. The hydrophobic block of the copolymer is a random copolymer consisting of a spiropyran functionalized 2-oxazoline (SPOx) and 2-(but-3-yn-1-yl)-4,5-dihydrooxazole (ButynOx), while the hydrophilic block is based on 2-methyl-2-oxazoline (MeOx). The block copolymer is terminated with tris(2-aminoethyl) amine (TREN) that serves as catalyst in a Knoevenagel condensation. Four block copolymers with different ButynOx/SPOx and hydrophilic/hydrophobic ratios are synthesized and self-assembled through solvent exchange. Micelles and vesicles of various sizes are observed by TEM, which undergo morphological and size changes in response to irradiation with UV light. We hypothesize that these transformations in the nanostructures are caused by increases in the hydrophilicity of the hydrophobic block when spiropyran (SP) isomerizes to merocyanine (MC) in the presence of UV light. The reversible transition from micellar to vesicular nanoreactors resulted in increased reaction kinetics through improved substrate accessibility to the catalytic site, or termination of the catalytic reaction due to polymer precipitation. Furthermore, these nanoreactors present a promising platform towards photoregulating reaction outcomes based on changes in nanostructure morphology.

Self-Assembly of a Triblock Copolymer in the Presence of a Rigid Conjugated Polyelectrolyte

The properties of conducting polymers are strongly influenced by structural changes induced by long-range order, which can be achieved by using block copolymers that self-assemble into crystalline structures. These blends result in unique mesophases distinct from the pure components with self-assembly behavior modulated by solution conditions and polymer architectures. High-throughput small-angle X-ray scattering data of aqueous Pluronic P123 (PEO 20 –PPO 70 –PEO 20 ) and conjugated polyelectrolyte poly[3-(potassium-4-butanoate) thiophene-2,5-diyl] (PPBT) blends at various concentrations and temperatures were automatically classified into phase maps by autophasemap, an unsupervised statistical analysis algorithm. The outlined phase boundaries revealed that adding PPBT to high P123 concentrations induced a transition from cubicly ordered spherical micelles to hexagonally packed cylindrical micelles. Shear alignment via rheological small-angle neutron scattering of the blends produced monolithic oriented cubic and hexagonal crystal gels. Furthermore, these insights into the self-assembly of conductive polymer blends will aid in the design of soft materials with tunable structural and electronic properties.
