Gravitational effects on electrochemical batteries

The existing work on gravitational effects on electrochemical batteries is summarized, certain conclusions are drawn, and recommendations are made for future activities in this field. The effects of sustained high-G environments on cycle silver-zinc and nickel-cadmium cells have been evaluated over four complete cycles in the region of 10 to 75 G. Although no effects on high current discharge performances or on ampere-hour capacity were noted, severe zinc migration and sloughing of active material from the zinc electrode were observed. This latter effect constitutes real damage, and over a long period of time would result in loss of capacity. It is recommended that a zero-G battery experiment be implemented. Both an orbiting satellite and a sounding rocket approach are being considered.

Design study for a liquid metal slip ring solar array orientation mechanism

The design of a single axis orientation mechanism for solar arrays on high power synchronous satellites is studied primarily with respect to providing 116 liquid metal slip rings for reduced friction and improved electrical characteristics. Designs and tradeoff studies for the slip rings and other components are presented. An assembly containing 33 slip rings of three design approaches was designed, fabricated, and vacuum tested to 30 amperes and 30,000 volts. Containment of the liquid metal gallium in large diameter slip rings was difficult. A design approach is presented which is expected to provide improved retention of the liquid metal.

High energy density primary batteries

By the use of fractional factorials, paths of steepest ascent and direct comparison experimentation, performance characteristics of the CuF2/LiAsF6-MF/Li electrochemical system were optimized under conditions of temperature environment, discharge rate, active stand, and use of anhydrous cathodes. Two hundred ampere-hours/lb of CuF2 and 600 watt-hours/lb of CuF2 were achieved in anhydrous cells at plus 40 C and at a discharge rate of 10 ma sq cm. Electrical performance is primarily altered by temperature and discharge rate; however, other factors such as cathode water content, cathode conductor content, separator thickness, and the use of SO2 gas also have significant effects.

Preliminary study of a wall stabilized constructed arc

An iterative, implicit, finite-difference numerical technique is described which is suitable for obtaining solutions to the governing equations for a gas flowing in an axially symmetric constricted-arc heater. The method is shown to provide adequate solutions for three cases of simple pipe flows found in the literature, and for flow in a constricted-arc heater by direct comparison with experimental data. The comparison with arc-heater data includes static pressure, arc voltage, and wall heat flux, all as a function of axial location, and a radial temperature profile at one axial station. The arc-heater data were taken with air as the test gas at a heater inlet pressure approximately 0.40 atm and two flow rates of 2.2 and 4.8 g/sec. The arc currents investigated were between 377 and 584 amperes.

Ironless armature torque motor

Four iron-less armature torque motors, four Hall device position sensor assemblies, and two test fixtures were fabricated. The design approach utilized samarium cobalt permanent magnets, a large airgap, and a three-phase winding in a stationary ironless armature. Hall devices were employed to sense rotor position. An ironless armature torque motor having an outer diameter of 4.25 inches was developed to produce a torque constant of 65 ounce-inches per ampere with a resistance of 20.5 ohms. The total weight, including structural elements, was 1.58 pounds. Test results indicated that all specifications were met except for generated voltage waveform. It is recommended that investigations be made concerning the generated voltage waveform to determine if it may be improved.

A 13000-hour test of a mercury hollow cathode

A mercury-fed hollow cathode was tested for 12,979 hours in a bell jar at SERT 2 neutralizer operating conditions. The net electron current drawn to a collector was 0.25 ampere at average collector voltages between 21.8 and 36.7 volts. The mercury flow rate was varied from 5.6 to 30.8 equivalent milliamperes to give stable operation at the desired electrode voltages and currents. Variations with time in the neutralizer discharge characteristics were observed and hypothesized to be related to changes in the cathode orifice dimensions and the availability of electron emissive material. A facility failure caused abnormal test conditions for the last 876 hours and led to the cathode heater failure which concluded the test.

High voltage and current, gate assisted, turn-off thyristor development

An improved high speed power switch with unique turn-off capability was developed. This gate assisted turn-off thyristor (GATT) was rated 1000 volts and 100 amperes with turn-off times of 2 microseconds. Fifty units were delivered for evaluation. In addition, test circuits designed to relate to the series inverter application were built and demonstrated. In the course of this work it was determined that the basic device design is adequate to meet the static characteristics and dynamic turn-off specification. It was further determined that the turn-on specification is critically dependent on the gate drive circuit due to the distributive nature of the cathode-gate geometry. Future work should emphasize design modifications which reduce the gate current required for fast turn-on, thereby opening the way to higher power (current) devices.

Experimental investigation of a wall stablized arc with comparisons to theoretical predictions

A wall-stabilized, constricted-arc heater was investigated by extensive measurements of pressure, voltage, and wall heat flux at different axial locations along the constrictor. Radial temperature profiles were measured at one axial location by the radiance of a single line method and also by the continuum radiance at a wavelength of 4955 A. The arc heater with an inside diameter of 2.37 cm and a constrictor length of 42 cm was operated with nitrogen flow rate from about 2 to 10 g/sec, and are currents from 400 to 1200 amperes. Based on a literature search, two different digital computer programs were selected which were used to predict the pertinent parameters by numerical solutions to the governing differential equations. The program selections were based on completeness and availability. In general the predictions were adequate when laminar flow was assumed, and the greatest difficulty was encountered in the predictions of wall heat flux. The results of the measurements are shown in graphical form, along with the theoretical predictions from both computer programs.

Electrostatic thrusters.

The current status of research and development programs on electrostatic thrusters is reviewed. Current programs that utilize mercury electron-bombardment thrusters range from 5- to 30-cm in diameter. Recent progress on the 5-cm thruster has emphasized durability, with accelerator time exceeding 6300 hours and total time on the rest of the thruster exceeding 8300 hours. Recent progress on the 30-cm thruster has been outstanding in dished-grid accelerator systems. Ion beams up to 5 amperes have been obtained for short periods with 1000 volts net accelerating potential difference. The cesium electron-bombardment and cesium contact programs are also described.

Experimental studies and applications of vanadium oxides.

The electrical and electrochemical properties of V-5 and V-7 vanadium oxides were investigated. The effects of pressure, temperature and moisture on the bulk resistivity of the oxides in powder, sintered, and crystalline form were determined, and the static and dynamic volt-ampere characteristics were obtained. Sintered samples tested showed better electrical stability than the compressed powder samples. Two types of commercially available vanadium pentoxide were heat-treated to obtain various crystalline oxide forms which were mounted on alumina substrates and terminated by thick-film conductors for making electrical connections. Indications are that these materials could have applications as sensors, critical-temperature resistors, high-speed switches, and temperature-compensation elements in hybrid microelectronic circuits.

Logic-controlled solid state switchgear for 270 volts dc

A feasibility study to design and demonstrate solid state switchgear in the form of circuit breakers and a power transfer switch is described. The switchgear operates on a nominal 270 V dc circuit and controls power to a load of up to 15 amperes. One circuit breaker may be interconnected to a second breaker to form a power transfer switch. On-off and transfer functions of the breakers or the transfer switch are remotely controlled. A number of reclosures with variable time delay between tripout and reclosure are programmed and controlled by integrated analog and COSMOS logic circuits. A unique commutation circuit, that generates only minimal transient disturbance to either source or load, was developed to interrupt current flow through the main SCR switching element. Laboratory tests demonstrated performance of the solid state circuit breakers over specified voltage and temperature ranges.

Metal-oxide-metal point contact junction detectors

The detection mechanism(s) and design of a mechanically stable metal-oxide-metal point contact junction detector are considered. A prototype for a mechanically stable device has been constructed and tested. A technique has been developed which accurately predicts microwave video detector and heterodyne mixer SIM (semiconductor-insulator-metal) diode performance from low dc frequency volt-ampere curves. The difference in contact potential between the two metals and geometrically induced rectification constitute the detection mechanisms.

Evaluation program for secondary spacecraft cells: Initial evaluation tests of Eagel-Picher Industries, Incorporated, 20.0 amphere-hour nickel-cadmium spacecraft cells

An evaluation test of the 20.0 ampere-hour cells was conducted to insure that all cells put into the life cycle program are of high quality. This is accomplished by the screening of cells found to have electrolyte leakage, internal shorts, low capacity, or inability of any cell to recover its open circuit voltage above 1.150 volts during the internal short test. The results obtained in the test are given, as well as the recommendations based on these findings.

Ultrapulse welding: A new joining technique

The ultrapulse process is a resistance welding process that utilizes unidirectional current of high magnitude for a very short time with a precisely controlled dynamic force pulse. Peak currents of up to 220,000 amperes for two to ten milliseconds are used with synchronized force pulses of up to nine thousand pounds. The welding current passing through the relatively high resistance of the interface between the parts that are being joined results in highly localized heating. Described is the UPW process as it applies to the automotive industry.

Research program in nuclear and solid state physics

The survey of negative pion absorption reactions on light and medium nuclei was continued. Muon spin precession was studied using an iron target. An impulse approximation model of the pion absorption process implied that the ion will absorb almost exclusively on nucleon pairs, single nucleon absorption being suppressed by energy and momentum conservation requirements. For measurements on both paramagnetic and ferromagnetic iron, the external magnetic field was supplied by a large C-type electromagnet carrying a current of about 100 amperes.

Metallic oxide switches using thick film technology

Metallic oxide thick film switches were processed on alumina substrates using thick film technology. Vanadium pentoxide in powder form was mixed with other oxides e.g., barium, strontium copper and glass frit, ground to a fine powder. Pastes and screen printable inks were made using commercial conductive vehicles and appropriate thinners. Some switching devices were processed by conventional screen printing and firing of the inks and commercial cermet conductor terminals on 96% alumina substrates while others were made by applying small beads or dots of the pastes between platinum wires. Static, and dynamic volt-ampere, and pulse tests indicate that the switching and self-oscillatory characteristics of these devices could make them useful in memory element, oscillator, and automatic control applications.
