Quantifying Message Aggregation Optimisations for Energy Savings in PGAS Models

Upon breaking past the exascale barrier, HPC systems are facing their greatest challenge yet - a power wall that must be addressed through new methods in both hardware and software. While energy costs are becoming a major issue at all levels, of particular concern is that of the network, as the relative cost of moving data is increasing faster than ever. The partitioned global address space (PGAS) model is critical within certain HPC domains, but is known to suffer from the small message problem, where irregular many-to-many access patterns result in congesting the network with excessive numbers of small messages. To address this, the conveyor aggregation library was developed to defer individual messages and group them for subsequent bulk processing. In this paper, we investigate its impact on energy use related to the network, with a focus on the Slingshot 11 interconnect. We will demonstrate that this strategy is not only highly performant, but also crucial to reducing energy footprints to remain within target power envelopes.

Measurement-informed Dynamic Aggregation of Distribution Systems

This paper proposes a measurement-informed dynamic aggregation methodology in order to create equivalent representations of distribution systems that are compatible with large-scale transmission analysis. By optimizing an equivalent feeder parameters using time-series measurements of active power, reactive power, and voltage at the Point of Interconnection (POI), the approach yields simplified yet dynamically accurate equivalents. Implemented in PSCAD with models of photovoltaic–battery systems, three-phase motors, and static loads, the method employs hybrid differential evolution and bounded least-squares optimization laying the foundation for for real-time state estimation and optimized sensor placement in distribution networks.

Impact of Aggregated PV on Subsynchronous Torsional Interaction: Preprint

This paper investigates induced oscillation (specifically subsynchronous torsional interactions) in power systems arising from photovoltaic (PV) power modulation. Time domain simulations of a modified IEEE first-benchmark system are presented and analyzed. In the IEEE benchmark system, a PV generator was added at the same bus where the synchronous generator is connected. The impact of different parameters of the PV inverters volt-volt-ampere reactive (volt-var) curve on SSTI is examined. The most severe impact found arises from the time response of the inverters reactive power change. A second-order time response with natural frequency matching the rotor speed deviation oscillation frequency and low-damping ratio quickly drives the system to an unstable region. Although it is highly unlikely that conditions necessary for distributed energy resource-induced oscillations would occur in the field, with knowledge of this vulnerability in mind, inverters' control parameters can be designed to avoid it.

Genesis of Active Pt/CeO 2 Catalyst for Dry Reforming of Methane by Reduction and Aggregation of Isolated Platinum Atoms into Clusters

Atomically dispersed metal catalysts offer the advantages of efficient metal utilization and high selectivities for reactions of technological importance. Such catalysts have been suggested to be strong candidates for dry reforming of methane (DRM), offering prospects of high selectivity for synthesis gas without coke formation, which requires ensembles of metal sites and is a challenge to overcome in DRM catalysis. However, investigations of the structures of isolated metal sites on metal oxide supports under DRM conditions are lacking, and the catalytically active sites remain undetermined. Data characterizing the DRM reaction-driven structural evolution of a cerium oxide- supported catalyst, initially incorporating atomically dispersed platinum, and the corresponding changes in catalyst performance are reported. X-ray absorption and infrared spectra show that the reduction and agglomeration of isolated cationic platinum atoms to form small platinum clusters/nanoparticles are necessary for DRM activity. Density functional theory calculations of the energy barriers for methane dissociation on atomically dispersed platinum and on platinum clusters support these observations. Here the results emphasize the need for in-operando experiments to assess the active sites in such catalysts. The inferences about the catalytically active species are suggested to pertain to a broad class of catalytic conversions involving the rate-limiting dissociation of light alkanes.

Aggregation and analysis of indication-symptom relationships for drugs approved in the USA

Abstract Purpose Drug indications and disease symptoms often confound adverse event reports in real-world datasets, including electronic health records and reports in the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS). A thorough, standardized set of indications and symptoms is needed to identify these confounders in such datasets for drug research and safety assessment. The aim of this study is to create a comprehensive list of drug-indication associations and disease-symptom associations using multiple resources, including existing databases and natural language processing. Methods Drug indications for drugs approved in the USA were extracted from two databases, RxNorm and Side Effect Resource (SIDER). Symptoms for these indications were extracted from MedlinePlus and using natural language processing from PubMed abstracts. Results A total of 1361 unique drugs, 1656 unique indications, and 2201 unique symptoms were extracted from a wide variety of MedDRA System Organ Classes. Text-mining precision was maximized at 0.65 by examining Term Frequency Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) scores of the disease-symptom associations. Conclusion The drug-indication associations and disease-symptom associations collected in this study may be useful in identifying confounders in other datasets, such as safety reports. With further refinement and additional drugs, indications, and symptoms, this dataset may become a quality resource for disease symptoms.
