Absence of Y-pocket in 1-Fe Brillouin zone and reversed orbital occupation imbalance in FeSe

The FeSe nematic phase has been the focus of recent research on iron-based superconductors (IBSs) due to its unusual properties, which are distinct from those of the pnictides. A series of theoretical/experimental studies were performed to determine the origin of the nematic phase. However, they yielded conflicting results and caused additional controversies. Here, we report the results of angle-resolved photoemission and X-ray absorption spectroscopy studies on FeSe detwinned by a piezo stack. We fully resolved band dispersions with orbital characters near the Brillouin zone (BZ) corner, and revealed an absence of any Fermi pocket at the Y point in the 1-Fe BZ. In addition, the occupation imbalance between d xz and d yz orbitals was the opposite of that of iron pnictides, consistent with the identified band characters. These results resolve issues associated with the FeSe nematic phase and shed light on the origin of the nematic phase in IBSs.

Robust Kagome Electronic Structure in Topological Quantum Magnets XMn 6 Sn 6 (X = Dy, Tb, Gd, Y)

Crystal geometry can greatly influence the emergent properties of quantum materials. As an example, the kagome lattice is an ideal platform to study the rich interplay between topology, magnetism, and electronic correlation. In this work, combining high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculation, we systematically investigate the electronic structure of XMn 6 Sn 6 (X=Dy,Tb,Gd,Y) family compounds. Here, we observe the Dirac fermion and the flat band arising from the magnetic kagome lattice of Mn atoms. Interestingly, the flat band locates in the same energy region in all compounds studied, regardless of their different magnetic ground states and 4f electronic configurations. These observations suggest a robust Mn magnetic kagome lattice across the XMn 6 Sn 6 family, thus providing an ideal platform for the search for, and investigation of, new emergent phenomena in magnetic topological materials.

Selective Heating Through Y-Junction Waveguide Designed by Acoustic Shape Optimization

Unlike phononic crystals or systems designed by topology optimization, waveguides designed by shape optimization do not have voids or internal defects, making the fabrication process more suitable for additive manufacturing. By designing a Y-junction waveguide through shape optimization, an ultrasonic wave can be controlled so that it propagates to a predetermined location just by adjusting its frequency. These demultiplexed ultrasonic waves can be used to transport signals or stimulate nearby materials. As an example, the ultrasonic wave is converted to heat at different locations, which can be applied to mechanisms that can take advantage of heating. First, shape optimization is performed on a cylindrical structure to selectively propagate ultrasonic waves of a particular frequency while attenuating others, which is analyzed through a finite element model. The numerical study results are compared with experimental measurements from samples fabricated through additive manufacturing methods. After verifying the concept, the Y-junction waveguide is fabricated to demultiplex the wave and selectively heat different locations. Here the results show that the method of combining shape optimization with additive manufacturing is exceptionally simple and capable of demultiplexing ultrasonic waves, which can replace complex electrical components with single-material waveguides.

A New Family of Proton‐Conducting Electrolytes for Reversible Solid Oxide Cells: BaHf x Ce 0.8− x Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3− δ

Abstract Reversible solid oxide cells based on ceramic proton conductors have potential to be the most efficient system for large‐scale energy storage. The performance and long‐term durability of these systems, however, are often limited by the ionic conductivity or stability of the proton‐conducting electrolyte. Here new family of solid oxide electrolytes, BaHf x Ce 0.8− x Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3− δ (BHCYYb), which demonstrate a superior ionic conductivity to stability trade‐off than the state‐of‐the‐art proton conductors, BaZr x Ce 0.8− x Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3− δ (BZCYYb), at similar Zr/Hf concentrations, as confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis, Raman, and X‐ray diffraction analysis of samples over 500 h of testing are reported. The increase in performance is revealed through thermodynamic arguments and first‐principle calculations. In addition, lab scale full cells are fabricated, demonstrating high peak power densities of 1.1, 1.4, and 1.6 W cm −2 at 600, 650, and 700 °C, respectively. Round‐trip efficiencies for steam electrolysis at 1 A cm −2 are 78%, 72%, and 62% at 700, 650, and 600 °C, respectively. Finally, CO 2 H 2 O electrolysis is carried out for over 700 h with no degradation.

Lithium Iron Aluminum Nickelate, LiNi x Fe y Al z O 2 —New Sustainable Cathodes for Next–Generation Cobalt–Free Li–Ion Batteries

In recent years, cobalt has become a critical constraint on the supply chain of the Li-ion battery industry. Here, with the ever-increasing projections for electric vehicles, the dependency of current Li-ion batteries on the ever-fluctuating cobalt prices poses serious environmental and sustainability issues. To address these challenges, a new class of cobalt-free materials with general formula of LiNi x Fe y Al z O 2 ( x + y + z = 1), termed as the lithium iron aluminum nickelate (NFA) class of cathodes, is introduced. These cobalt-free materials are synthesized using the sol–gel process to explore their compositional landscape by varying aluminum and iron. These NFA variants are characterized using electron microscopy, neutron and X-ray diffraction, and Mössbauer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to investigate their morphological, physical, and crystal-structure properties. Operando experiments by X-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and galvanostatic intermittent titration have been also used to study the crystallographic transitions, electrochemical activity, and Li-ion diffusivity upon lithium removal and uptake in the NFA cathodes. NFA compositions yield specific capacities of ≈200 mAh g -1 , demonstrating reasonable rate capability and cycling stability with ≈80% capacity retention after 100 charge/discharge cycles. While this is an early stage of research, the potential that these cathodes could have as viable candidates in next-generation cobalt-free lithium-ion batteries is highlighted here.

Y-Type Non-Fullerene Acceptors with Outer Branched Side Chains and Inner Cyclohexane Side Chains for 19.36% Efficiency Polymer Solar Cells

Raising the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy level of Y-type non-fullerene acceptors can increase the open-circuit voltage (V oc ) and thus the photovoltaic performance of the current top performing polymer solar cells (PSCs). One of the viable routes is demonstrated by the successful Y6 derivative of L8-BO with the branched alkyl chains at the outer side. This will introduce steric hindrance and reduce intermolecular aggregation, thus open up the bandgap and raise the LUMO energy level. To take further advantages of the steric hindrance influence on optoelectronic properties of Y6 derivatives, two Y-type non-fullerene acceptors of BTP-Cy-4F and BTP-Cy-4Cl are designed and synthesized by adopting outer branched side chains and inner cyclohexane side chains. An outstanding V oc of 0.937 V is achieved in the D18:BTP-Cy-4F binary blend devices along with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.52%. With the addition of BTP-eC9 to extend the absorption spectral coverage, a remarkable PCE of 19.36% is realized finally in the related ternary blend devices, which is one of the highest values for single-junction PSCs at present. The results illustrate the great potential of cyclohexane side chains in constructing high-performance non-fullerene acceptors and their PSCs.

Mixed Ionic–Electronic Conductor of Perovskite Li x La y MO 3-δ toward Carbon-Free Cathode for Reversible Lithium–Air Batteries

Mixed ionic–electronic conductors (MIECs) can play a pivotal role in achieving high energies and power densities in rechargeable batteries owing to their ability to simultaneously conduct ions and electrons. In our study, a new strategy is proposed wherein late 3d transition metals (TMs) are substituted into a perovskite Li-ion conductor to transform it into a Li-containing MIEC. First-principles calculations show that perovskite Li x La y MO 3 with late 3d TMs have a low oxygen vacancy formation energy, implying high electron carrier concentrations corresponding to high electronic conductivity. The activation barriers for Li diffusion in Li x La y MO 3 (M = Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co) are below 0.411 eV, resulting in high Li-ion conductivity. The designed perovskites of Li0.34La 0.55 MnO 3-δ experimentally prove to have high electronic (2.04 × 10 -3 S cm -1 ) and Li-ion (8.53 × 10 -5 S cm -1 ) conductivities, and when applied in a carbon-free cathode of a Li–air cell, they deliver superior reversibility at 0.21 mAh cm -2 over 100 charge/discharge cycles while avoiding the degradation associated with carbonaceous materials. Finally, this strategy enables the effective design of Li-conducting MIEC and reversible Li–air batteries.

Revealing the Chemical State of Palladium in Operating In 2 O 3 Gas Sensors: Metallic Pd Enhances Sensing Response and Intermetallic In x Pd y Compound Blocks It

The sensing response of metal oxides activated with noble metal nanoparticles is significantly influenced by changes to the chemical state of corresponding elements under operating conditions. Here, a PdO/rh-In 2 O3 consisting of PdO nanoparticles loaded onto rhombohedral In 2 O 3 was studied as a gas sensor for H 2 gas (100–40000 ppm in an oxygen-free atmosphere) in the temperature range of 25–450 °C. The phase composition and chemical state of elements were examined by resistance measurements combined with synchrotron-based in situ X-ray diffraction and ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. As found, PdO/rh-In 2 O 3 undergoes a series of structural and chemical transformations during operation: from PdO to Pd/PdH x and finally to the intermetallic In x Pd y phase. The maximal sensing response (R N2 /R H2 ) of ~5 · 10 7 towards 40000 ppm (4 vol %) H 2 at 70 °C is correlated with the formation of PdH 0.706 /Pd. The In x Pd y intermetallic compounds formed around 250 °C significantly decrease the sensing response.

Precise Pore Engineering of fcu–Type Y–MOFs for One–Step C 2 H 4 Purification from Ternary C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 2 Mixtures

The purification of C 2 H 4 from C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 2 mixtures is of great significance in the chemical industry for C 2 H 4 production but remains a daunting task. Guided by powerful reticular chemistry principles, herein a systematic study is carried out to engineer pore dimensions and pore functionality of fcu-type Y-based metal–organic frameworks (Y-MOFs) through the construction of a series of eight new structures using linear dicarboxylate linkers with different length and functional groups. This study illustrates how delicate changes in pore size and pore surface chemistry can effectively influence the adsorption preference of C 2 H 6 , C 2 H 4 , and C 2 H 2 by the MOFs. Importantly, clear relations between pore size/pore surface polarity and C 2 adsorption selectivities of this series of MOFs are established. In particular, HIAM-326 built on a linker decorated with trifluoromethoxy group shows notably preferential adsorption of C 2 H 6 and C 2 H 2 over C 2 H 4 , with balanced C 2 H 2 /C 2 H 4 and C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 selectivities. Furthermore, this endows the compound with the capability of one-step purification of C 2 H 4 from C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 2 ternary mixtures, which is validated by breakthrough measurements where high purity C 2 H 4 (99.9%+) can be obtained directly from the separation column. Its adsorption thermodynamics and underlying selective adsorption mechanisms are further revealed by ab initio calculations.

Extraction of 88 Y, 152 Eu, 228 Ac, 241 Am, and 244 Cm with 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA) resin

In this report the behavior of 88 Y, 152 Eu, 228 Ac, 241 Am, and 244 Cm was studied with 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone resin with batch uptake, kinetics and column studies. Studies were performed in acetate buffer solutions (pH ~ 2 to ~ 6) and there was high uptake of all isotopes, except 228 Ac, at pH > 4.5. The kinetics of uptake were reasonable, although slower for the actinides, and sufficient for column studies. The retention of 88 Y, 152 Eu, and 241 Am on the resin in column studies was demonstrated as well as a reasonable separation of these isotopes from 228 Ac.

Template-free fabrication of fractal porous Y 2 O 3 monolithic foam and its functional modification by Ni-doping

Fractal structures which display nearly the same character at every scale exist widely in nature, however, it is still a great challenge to fabricate a fractal nanostructure. Herein, a Y 2 O 3 monolith with unique hierarchically fractal porous structure was fabricated via calcination of a fractal porous coordination polymer precursor. The monolith exhibits porous feature with the pore-size ranging from micrometers to nanometers. Interestingly, each level of the pore-wall is composed of secondary porous structures, whose pore-wall is composed of sub-level self-similar porous feature. Moreover, by Ni-doping in the coordination polymer precursor, fractal porous Ni@Y 2 O 3 was prepared, and exhibited enhanced activity in ethanol steam reforming compared with that of a common supported NiO catalyst.

Simultaneously improved J sc and V oc achieving 19.15% efficiency in ternary blend polymer solar cell containing a Y-type acceptor with thiophene based end groups

Simultaneously enhancing the short-circuit current density (J sc ) and open-circuit voltage (V oc ) of current state-of-the-art polymer solar cells (PSCs) containing wide bandgap polymers as donors and Y6 derivatives as acceptors is of great challenge but essential for further improvement of the photovoltaic performances. Here, in this work, two Y-type non-fullerene acceptors of BTP-T and BTP-TCl were designed and successfully synthesized with relatively weak electron-accepting thiophene based end groups, where blue-shifted absorption and upshifted LUMO energy levels were achieved to fill the well-known absorption gap at 700 nm of typical binary devices based Y-type molecules and rise the output voltage, respectively. Simultaneously increased J sc and V oc were achieved in ternary blend devices containing D18:BTP-eC9:BTP-TCl with a significantly improved PCE up to 19.15 %, which is over 7 % increase compared to the binary device. Our results illustrated the great potential of rational design of Y6 derivatives for constructing ternary PSCs to improve their performances.

Improved catalytic activity of Mo x Ni y Al z thin films as electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline media

In this work, we report activities of Mo x Ni y X z (where X is Al, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, W)-based electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in a 1 M NaOH solution. Mo x Ni y X z thin film electrocatslysts were prepared by magentron sputtering at 25°C and 800°C and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyzer and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Here, the catalytic activity of electrocatalyst was studied by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The electrocatalyst based on Mo 80 Ni 5 Al 15 (800°C) shows the best value of the overpotential (-181 mV) for HER from all tested ternary systems. XRD analysis indicates that HER activity only Mo 80 Ni 5 Al 15 thin films prepared at 800°C contained fcc phase. Other less active composition contained only bcc phase. The results obtained from impedance spectroscopy are consistent with the results from cyclic voltammetry. The stability of the prepared catalyst was studied by chronoamperometric analysis. The results from chronoamperometry show that HER activity of Mo 80 Ni 5 Al 15 prepared at 800°C, after very slight initial activity decrease, stays constant, while activity of Ni catalyst decreased almost twice in measured time window. Since Ni is commonly used industrial catalyst, Mo 80 Ni 5 Al 15 based alloy could be more attractive catalyst material for alkaline electrolyzers.

The orbital effect on the anomalous magnetism and evolution in La $x$ Y 1-$x$ VO 3 (0 ≤ $x$ ≤ 0.2) single crystals

The orbital effect on the anomalous magnetism and evolution of single crystals with low La doping, La $x$ Y 1-$x$ VO 3 ($x$ = 0, 0.1, and 0.2), has been studied using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, specific heat, magnetization, and Raman-scattering techniques. It is found that substituting Y 3+ by La 3+ increases the degeneracy of the $yz/zx$ orbitals and decreases the Jahn-Teller distortion. These weakens the G-type (antiphase ordering along the c axis) orbital ordering phase. Meanwhile, the substituting decreases the magnetism entropy, indicating the shrinking of the t 2g and e g orbital hybridization, eventually destabilizing the C-type (in-phase ordering along the c axis) antiferromagnetic ordering phase. In addition, the mechanism for the shrinking of the diamagnetism with increasing $x$ is analyzed. In conclusion, it may attribute to the competition between the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinsky–Moriya interaction and the single-ion anisotropy.

La 3+ and Y 3+ interactions with the carboxylic acid moiety at the liquid/vapor interface: Identification of binding complexes, charge reversal, and detection limits

Specific interactions of yttrium and lanthanum ions with a fatty acid Langmuir monolayer were investigated using vibrational sum frequency spectroscopy. The trivalent ions were shown to interact with the charged form of the carboxylic acid group from nanomolar concentrations (<300 nM). Analysis of the spectral features from both the symmetric and the asymmetric carboxylate modes reveals the presence of at least three distinct coordination structures linked to specific binding configurations. Although the same species were identified for both La 3+ and Y 3+ , they display a different concentration dependence, highlighting the ion-specificity of the interaction. From the analysis of the response of interfacial water molecules, the reversal of the surface charge, as well as the formation of yttrium hydroxide complexes, were detected upon increasing the amount of salt in solution. The binding interaction and kinetics of absorption are sensitive to the solution pH, showing a distinct ion speciation in the interfacial region when compared to the bulk. Changing the subphase pH or adding a monovalent background electrolyte that promotes deprotonation of the carboxylic acid headgroup could further improve the detection limit of La 3+ and Y 3+ to concentrations < 100 nM. These findings demonstrate that nM concentrations of trace metals contaminants, typically found on monovalent salts, can significantly influence the binding structure and kinetics in Langmuir monolayers.

Intrinsic and hard magnetic properties of (Sm 1-x R x )-Fe-Co-V alloys (R = Gd, Zr, and Y)

SmFe 12 -based compounds with the ThMn 12 -type structure have a great potential as future rare-earth-lean permanent magnets. However, their reliance on stabilizing non-magnetic elements has impeded practical applications. Therefore, elements such as Gd, Y, and Zr have gained popularity as candidates to minimize the need for stabilizing elements by reducing the formation energy of the ThMn 12 (1:12) phase. Here, this study examines the effect of Gd, Y, and Zr on the intrinsic and hard magnetic properties in (Sm 1-x R x ) 1.2 Fe 8.4 Co 2.1 V 1.5 (or with nominal composition of (Sm 1-x R x ) 9.1 Fe 63.6 Co 15.9 V 11.4 ) with a single 1:12 phase for 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3. Notably, samples substituted with Gd exhibit an enhanced temperature dependence of the magnetic properties.

LiNi x Fe y Al z O 2 , a new cobalt-free layered cathode material for advanced Li-ion batteries

Recently, rapid fluctuations in cobalt prices have created a worsening supply chain constraint that has become a serious cause of concern amidst global battery manufacturers. To address this challenge, we report herein a new class of cobalt-free, nickel-rich layered cathode material termed the NFA class with general formula LiNi x Fe y Al z O 2 (x + y + z = 1). Using co-precipitation reaction in a continuous stirred tank reactor, we synthesized NFA(OH) 2 precursors with the constituent Ni, Fe and Al elements successfully incorporated. The obtained LiNFAO 2 cathode was characterized using X-Ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Electrochemical behavior was assessed using cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge/discharge, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and galvanostatic intermittent titration technique at various states of lithiation/delithiation. Electrochemical performance evaluations revealed that our cobalt-free material delivers high capacity of 190 mAh/g at 0.1C. Rate and cycling performance evaluations also indicated good rate capability and cycling stability with 88% capacity retention after 100 cycles at C/3. Using NFA cathodes, we also fabricated a 0.5Ah (C/3) cobalt-free Li-ion battery which demonstrated reasonable cycling stability with ~72% capacity retained after 200 cycles. Overall, our work demonstrates the immense potential of the cobalt-free NFA class cathodes as viable candidates towards development of next generation cost effective lithium ion batteries.

A small-box approach to the local crystal structure of Y 3 NbO 7

The local crystal structure of Y 3 NbO 7 was probed using neutron total scattering. Five different structural models were fit to the experimental pair distribution function of this material up to 15 Å. Fits of defect fluorite (Fm$\overline{3}$m), pyrochlore (Fd$\overline{3}$m), and orthorhombic C weberite models (C222 1 ) were attempted based on prior structural investigations of Y 3 NbO 7 and related fluorite-based materials. Orthorhombic P weberite (P222 1 ) and monoclinic weberite models (P112 1 ) were derived via symmetry reduction of the orthorhombic C weberite structure. All models except monoclinic weberite failed to reproduce the experimental pair distribution function. Misfits were clearly visible for peaks arising from atom pairs within the first coordination shell (defect fluorite and pyrochlore) and beyond (orthorhombic C and P weberite). By contrast, monoclinic weberite (γ ≈ 91.8°) provided an excellent fit, with no major misfits observed. This unit cell features distorted YO 8 dodecahedra, YO 7 monocapped octahedra, and NbO 6 octahedra as building blocks. Comparison between the topologies of the cationic and anionic substructures in monoclinic weberite and its parent orthorhombic C structure revealed displacements of the metal atoms along the [100] direction and a less compact spatial distribution of oxygen atoms along the a axis. In conclusion, the monoclinic weberite model presented herein may serve as a starting point to revisit structural modeling of fluorite-based materials with challenging local structures.
