Y(AsO)2 crystallizes in the tetragonal I4_1/amd space group. The structure is zero-dimensional and consists of eight Y(AsO)2 clusters. Y3+ is bonded in a linear geometry to two equivalent O2- atoms. Both Y–O bond lengths are 2.13 Å. As+0.50+ is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one O2- atom. The As–O bond length is 1.78 Å. O2- is bonded in a distorted linear geometry to one Y3+ and one As+0.50+ atom.
YFe4Ge2 crystallizes in the tetragonal P4_2/mnm space group. The structure is three-dimensional. Y is bonded to six equivalent Ge atoms to form a mixture of distorted edge and corner-sharing YGe6 octahedra. The corner-sharing octahedral tilt angles are 40°. There are four shorter (2.95 Å) and two longer (3.01 Å) Y–Ge bond lengths. Fe is bonded in a 3-coordinate geometry to three equivalent Ge atoms. There are two shorter (2.45 Å) and one longer (2.49 Å) Fe–Ge bond lengths. Ge is bonded in a 9-coordinate geometry to three equivalent Y and six equivalent Fe atoms.
YNi4As2 crystallizes in the tetragonal P4_2/mnm space group. The structure is three-dimensional. Y is bonded to six equivalent As atoms to form a mixture of distorted edge and corner-sharing YAs6 octahedra. The corner-sharing octahedral tilt angles are 40°. There are two shorter (2.90 Å) and four longer (2.92 Å) Y–As bond lengths. Ni is bonded in a 3-coordinate geometry to three equivalent As atoms. There are two shorter (2.40 Å) and one longer (2.41 Å) Ni–As bond lengths. As is bonded in a 9-coordinate geometry to three equivalent Y and six equivalent Ni atoms.
YNi4P2 crystallizes in the tetragonal P4_2/mnm space group. The structure is three-dimensional. Y is bonded in a 6-coordinate geometry to six equivalent P atoms. There are two shorter (2.80 Å) and four longer (2.85 Å) Y–P bond lengths. Ni is bonded in a 3-coordinate geometry to three equivalent P atoms. There are two shorter (2.30 Å) and one longer (2.32 Å) Ni–P bond lengths. P is bonded in a 9-coordinate geometry to three equivalent Y and six equivalent Ni atoms.
Y(CO2)4 crystallizes in the tetragonal P4/n space group. The structure is two-dimensional and consists of one Y(CO2)4 sheet oriented in the (0, 0, 1) direction. Y3+ is bonded in a distorted body-centered cubic geometry to eight O2- atoms. There are four shorter (2.29 Å) and four longer (2.46 Å) Y–O bond lengths. C+3.25+ is bonded in a bent 120 degrees geometry to two O2- atoms. There is one shorter (1.24 Å) and one longer (1.25 Å) C–O bond length. There are two inequivalent O2- sites. In the first O2- site, O2- is bonded in a bent 150 degrees geometry to one Y3+ and one C+3.25+ atom. In the second O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted linear geometry to one Y3+ and one C+3.25+ atom.
Y(PO)2 crystallizes in the tetragonal I4_1/amd space group. The structure is zero-dimensional and consists of eight Y(PO)2 clusters. Y3+ is bonded in a linear geometry to two equivalent O2- atoms. Both Y–O bond lengths are 2.16 Å. P+0.50+ is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one O2- atom. The P–O bond length is 1.60 Å. O2- is bonded in a distorted linear geometry to one Y3+ and one P+0.50+ atom.
In order to improve the sintering of SiC, mixtures of Al 2 O 3 and Y 2 O 3 powders are commonly included as sintering additives. The aim of this work was to use mechanically alloyed Al 2 O 3 –Y 2 O 3 mixtures as sintering additives to promote liquid phase sintering of SiC using spark plasma sintering. The results showed that milling reduced the particle size of the powders and led to the formation of complex oxide phases (YAP, YAM, and YAG) at low temperatures. As the ball milling time increased, the mass loss of specimens sintered with mechanically alloyed Al 2 O 3 –Y 2 O 3 mixtures decreased, and accordingly the relative density increased. However, the hardness and flexural strength of sintered SiC specimens first increased and then decreased. Because the specimens prepared with oxides milled for a long time contained too much YAG/YAP and accordingly too much liquid at sintering temperature. This negatively affected the mechanical properties of the SiC specimens because of the increased volume of the complex oxide phases, which have inferior mechanical properties to SiC, in the sintered specimens. In conclusion, when the ball milling time was 6h, the hardness (24.02 GPa) and flexural strength (655.61 MPa) of the SiC specimens reached maximum values.
Here, this study presents the first intrinsic kinetic model for the single-step conversion of ethanol to butene-rich olefins over bifunctional Cu-Y/Beta catalysts, addressing a critical gap in the design and scale-up of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) processes. The reaction network comprises ten global steps involving dehydrogenation, aldol condensation, hydrogenation, and dehydration reactions, distributed across Cu and rare-earth (Y) active sites. The model incorporates dual-site functionality (Cu and Y site) and explicitly accounts for key intermediates such as crotonaldehyde and butanal. Reaction rates are formulated using Langmuir–Hinshelwood–Hougen–Watson (LHHW) kinetics. Kinetic parameters are extracted by fitting the model to lab-scale packed-bed reactor data across a wide range of temperatures and space velocities, demonstrating strong agreement in ethanol conversion and product selectivity. The reaction kinetics developed in this work provide a foundational basis for constructing reactor models that enable process optimization and scale-up of ethanol-to-jet fuel technologies.
The atomization of a liquid jet is a multi-scale and multi-physics problem of interest for many engineering applications. Particularly, it drives the fuel-oxidizer mixing and dictates the efficiency of combustion engines. High-fidelity multi-phase simulations remain challenging due to the excessive computational cost required to capture all the atomization scales. Thus, atomization models are necessary to represent sub-grid liquid structures. Here, in this work, a modified Σ-Y model in the context of Eulerian-Lagrangian Spray Atomization (ELSA) is used to transport the surface area density of the spray. The model's predictive performance is assessed under various operating conditions relevant to heavy-duty engines using the Engine Combustion Network (ECN) Spray C and Spray D research-grade injectors. The classic droplet collision formulation of the Σ-Y model alone does not replicate the response of the measured spray surface area to changes in injector, ambient pressure, and injection pressure, requiring individual tuning of the model's parameters. Instead, a transition between dense and dilute spray breakup mechanisms is proposed in terms of the average droplet spacing. The collision breakup mechanism represents the dilute spray, whereas the droplet size in the dense spray is driven by a competition between the integral scale of turbulence and the balance between the turbulent kinetic energy and the surface energy of the droplets. Such an approach minimizes the requirements for model tuning. Moreover, the role of the constants of a compressible standard k-ε RANS model is assessed in the injector's internal flow and external spray simulation framework, and an updated set is proposed. The results are validated against x-ray radiography and Ultra-Small Angle X-ray Scattering (USAXS) data and highlight the predictive capabilities of the proposed physics-driven Σ-Y model, which is compatible with engine simulation turnaround times.
Abstract We present component-separated maps of the primary cosmic microwave background/kinematic Sunyaev–Zel’dovich (SZ) amplitude and the thermal SZ Compton- y parameter, created using data from the South Pole Telescope (SPT) and the Planck satellite. These maps, which cover the ∼2500 deg 2 of the southern sky imaged by the SPT-SZ survey, represent a significant improvement over previous such products available in this region by virtue of their higher angular resolution ( 1 .′ 25 for our highest-resolution Compton- y maps) and lower noise at small angular scales. In this work we detail the construction of these maps using linear combination techniques, including our method for limiting the correlation of our lowest-noise Compton- y map products with the cosmic infrared background. We perform a range of validation tests on these data products to test our sky modeling and combination algorithms, and we find good performance in all of these tests. Recognizing the potential utility of these data products for a wide range of astrophysical and cosmological analyses, including studies of the gas properties of galaxies, groups, and clusters, we make these products publicly available at http://pole.uchicago.edu/public/data/sptsz_ymap and on the NASA/LAMBDA website.
Perovskite oxides form a large family of materials with applications across various fields, owing to their structural and chemical flexibility. Efficient exploration of this extensive compositional space is now achievable through automated high-throughput experimentation combined with machine learning. In this study, we investigate the composition–structure–performance relationships of high-entropy La 0.8 Sr 0.2 Mn x Co y Fe z O 3±𝞭 perovskite oxides (0 < x, y, z <1; x+y+z≈1) for application as oxygen electrodes in Solid Oxide Cells. Following the deposition of a continuous compositional map using thin-film combinatorial pulsed laser deposition, compositional, structural, and performance properties are characterized using six different techniques with mapping capabilities. Random forests effectively model electrochemical performance, consistently identifying Fe-rich oxides as optimal compounds with the lowest area-specific resistance values for oxygen electrodes at 700 °C. Additionally, the models identify a statistical correlation between oxygen sublattice distortion—derived from spectral analysis of Raman-active modes—and enhanced performance.
In this study, single crystals of RE 3 Ni 5 Al 19 series (RE = Y, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er) are grown using the Al self-flux method. The crystal structure is examined by both single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction. Physical properties are studied for the first time for RE 3 Ni 5 Al 19 (RE = Y, Nd, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er) by means of magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and heat capacity measurements. Complex magnetic behaviors, with up to three transitions present for RE = Sm, Gd, Tb, and Dy, are revealed. Y 3 Ni 5 Al 19 is found to be a nonmagnetic nonsuperconducting metal (above T = 1.8 K) with weak electron–phonon coupling strength.
In this paper, the synthesis, structure, and physical properties of Y 5 Ru 2 O 12 , a new member of the Ln 5 B 2 O 12 class (Ln = lanthanide, B = Ru, Re, Mo) are reported. Single crystals of Y 5 Ru 2 O 12 are synthesized using a high-temperature, high-pressure (700 °C, 200 MPa) hydrothermal method. The structure features edge-sharing Ru—O—Ru 1D chains of distorted RuO6 octahedra. The YO n (n = 6 and 7) polyhedral groups bridge Ru—O—Ru chains across the unit cell by forming a complex 3D structure. The Ru—O—Ru chains contain alternating shorter and longer Ru—Ru distances along the chain. Single crystal neutron diffraction shows streak-like diffuse scattering along the H-direction, due to stacking faults. Temperature-dependent anisotropic magnetic measurements reveal a broad feature over a wide temperature range, with a maximum at ≈70 K indicating potential short-range ordering, with canted antiferromagnetic behavior below 30 K. The dominant magnetic interactions are antiferromagnetic with a large negative Weiss temperature θ ≈ –200 K. The compound has an effective magnetic moment that is anomalously large for this class of compounds (≈4 μ B Ru –1 ), and a phenomenological spin Hamiltonian describing the unusual anisotropic magnetization of Y 5 Ru 2 O 12 is proposed.
Density functional theory-based thermodynamic modeling was performed to determine the effect of humidity and H 2 /O 2 gas pressure on the defect chemistry and transport properties of proton conducting oxide BaZr 1-x Y x O 3-δ (x ≤ 0.1) in the temperature range of 800–1200K, relevant for solid oxide fuel/electrolysis cell applications. The first-principles charge defect analysis was carried out to obtain the defect energetic ensembles as a function of Fermi level as well as the dependence of the hydration and oxidation reaction energies on complex defect-dopant configurations. It is shown that oxygen vacancies introduced to compensate for the extra Ba vacancies may cause a slight increase in the concentration of hydroxyl and proton species upon hydration of Ba deficient BaZr 1-x Y x O 3-δ , while the overall proton diffusivity is predicted to decrease with increased proton hopping barriers upon trapping near the Ba vacancies. The developed defect model is further demonstrated to be able to describe the bulk defect chemistry and transport properties of BaZr 0.9 Y 0.1 O 3-δ under the solid oxide cell operating conditions. Finally, the theoretical framework developed in this work further allows the inclusion of configurational, energetic and electronic characteristics of the defects that can be used as a complementary tool to experimental measurements for testing various mechanistic pathways or to provide essential mechanistic data.
We present how 20 at% Sc addition affects the atomic packing and dynamics in a Y-Co-Al metallic glass (MG) and find that it greatly suppresses the dynamics of Co atoms by reducing the atomic packing difference in their surroundings. The Co atoms tending to be mobile or static depend on their nearest neighbors, i.e., possessing more Y/Y+Sc atoms but fewer Co atoms or vice versa. The X-ray absorption fine structure results confirm that Sc addition mainly changes the local environment around Co atoms, forming more Co-Co and Co-Sc pairs but significantly fewer Co-Y pairs than in the ternary counterpart, which can seriously slow the atomic dynamics and stabilize the competing phases. Our findings shed new light on the understanding of strong glass forming ability of the Sc-added Y-based high entropy MG from its local structure and dynamics and will be helpful in developing new bulk MGs.
Mg-Y cast alloy shows excellent ductility (elongation to failure > 15%) compared with pure Mg and commercial Mg cast alloys. By monitoring the microstructure evolution during an in situ tensile test of a Mg-2.5 wt%Y alloy, we identify the activation of prismatic slip, which is rare in Mg. Synchrotron X-ray micro-beam Laue diffraction (μ-Laue) and transmission electron microscopy revealed the morphology of prismatic slip bands and individual dislocations. Density functional theory and molecular dynamics calculations indicate that solute Y can significantly reduce the stacking fault energy (SFE) along direction on prismatic plane in Mg lattice and thus facilitate the nucleation of dislocations during deformation. The presence of free dislocations in the Mg lattice can also lead to nucleation of {10–12} twins even under unfavorable geometric conditions.
The statistical mechanic approach has been used to estimate the equilibrium defect distribution in a multiphase system by minimizing its free energy using microstructural characteristics and a finite set of defects obtained by first-principles calculations. Recently the approach was extended to take in consideration defects at the interface of the precipitate and matrix. Herein we apply the developed approach to the investigation of the stability of bcc Fe containing yttria, Y 2 O 3 , nanoclusters as a prototype of nanostructured ferritic alloys. It has been obtained that (100)Fe-O interface is unstable with respect to vacancies production. In a contrast to (100)Fe-O interface, the so called Klim interface is stable, i.e. local vacancy concentration at this interface at 600 K is below 10 -12 . It has been demonstrated that due to large defect formation energies the ODS particles are extremely stable and the main defect corresponds to Fe atoms substitute Y in Y 2 O 3 precipitate. Moreover, under thermodynamic equilibrium condition, the preexist vacancies in bulk Fe do not accumulate oxygen atom. The later observation not necessarily forbid the existence of a large amount of preexisting Fe vacancy - oxygen atom clusters at the initial stages of alloy formation far from equilibrium.
We propose a protocol to realize synthetic $p_x +ip_y$ superconductors in one-dimensional topological systems that host Majorana fermions. By periodically driving a localized Majorana mode across the system, our protocol realizes a topological pumping of Majorana fermions, analogous to the adiabatic Thouless pumping of electrical charges. Importantly, similar to the realization of a Chern insulator through Thouless pumping, we show that pumping of Majorana zero modes could lead to a $p_x +ip_y$ superconductor in the two dimensions of space and synthetic time. The Floquet theory is employed to map the driven one-dimensional system to a two-dimensional synthetic system by considering frequency as a new dimension. We demonstrate such Floquet $p_x +ip_y$ superconductors using the Kitaev $p$-wave superconductor chain, a prototypical 1D topological system, as well as its more realistic realization in the 1D Kondo lattice model as examples. We further show the appearance of Majorana $π$ mode at the Floquet zone boundary in an intermediate drive frequency region. Our work suggests a driven magnetic spiral coupled to a superconductor as a promising platform for the realization of novel topological superconductors.
