Baseline vs. DER Scenario

Projections and associated uncertainty estimates are generated for a variety of user-selectable EV charging sessions, electricity tariffs, subsidy levels, revenue schemes, charging station configurations, and on-site solar and/or storage options. The outputs are presented in CHIP's web portal browser in the form of easily interpretable graphics (interactive graphs and bar charts) that facilitate convenient comparison among different scenarios to aid decision-making. The user should bring assumptions for modeling on simulation planning horizon, number of EV charging sessions per year, electricity costs (energy and demand charge rates; flat versus time-of-use rate), site capital costs (equipment for EV chargers and transformer), solar PV, and battery energy storage (kW).

Influence of root- vs needle-derived litter on soil C and N stabilization in a California coniferous forest from 2001 to 2011

How plant inputs from above- versus below-ground affect long term carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) retention and stabilization in soils is not well known. We present results of a decade-long field study that traced the decomposition of 13C- and 15N-labeled Pinus ponderosa needle and fine root litter placed in O or A soil horizons of a sandy Alfisol under a coniferous forest. We measured the retention of litter-derived C and N in particulate (>2 mm) and bulk soil (<2 mm) fractions, as well as in density-separated free light and three mineral-associated fractions. After 10 years, the influence of slower initial mineralization of root litter compared to needle litter was still evident: almost twice as much root litter (44% of C) was retained than needle litter (22–28% of C). After 10 years, the O horizon retained more litter in coarse particulate matter implying the crucial comminution step was slower than in the A horizon, while the A horizon retained more litter in the finer bulk soil, where it was recovered in organo-mineral associations. Retention in these A horizon mineral-associated fractions was similar for roots and needles. Nearly 5% of the applied litter C (and almost 15% of the applied N) was in organo-mineral associations, which had centennial residence times and potential for long-term stabilization. Vertical movement of litter-derived C was minimal after a decade, but N was significantly more mobile. Overall, the legacy of initial litter quality influences total SOM retention; however, the potential for and mechanisms of long-term SOM stabilization are influenced not by litter type but by soil horizon. This dataset comprises (1) litter recovery for each of 5 timepoints in >2mm, <2mm, and density fractions, (2) density fractionation results for the 10-year timepoint, and (3) vertical movement of applied litter.

Modeling Contact Angle vs. Temperature for the Quartz-Water-Decane System

Innovative approaches are needed to improve the efficiency of oil recovery technologies to meet the growing demands of fossil-fuel based energy consumption. Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods such as low-salinity waterflooding and chemically tuned waterflooding aim to optimize the reservoir’s wetting properties, detaching oil globules from rock surfaces and allowing easier oil flow through pore throats. This wetting behavior is commonly quantified by contact angle measurements of the rock-oil-brine interface, which have been thoroughly investigated and theorized for many systems at ambient temperatures and pressures. However, few studies exist for extending contact angle theories away from ambient conditions. In this paper, we model the contact angles of a quartz-water-decane system at elevated temperatures using the surface tension component (STC) approach. Temperature-dependent van der Waals [Lifshitz-van der Waals (LW)] interactions and hydrogen-bonding (acid-base) interactions were calculated and are incorporated into the model for the quartz-water-decane interface. Additionally, the Hough and White procedure was used to create temperature-dependent dielectric functions of quartz, water, and normal decane for calculations of Hamaker coefficients. Hamaker coefficients calculated this way are highly linear with temperature and agree well with Israelachvili’s approximation. The acid-base interactions likely contribute the most to system wettability changes. Resulting contact angles of the quartz-water-decane system shift from water-wet (16°) to slightly water-wet (57.4°) as temperature increases. The model was also successfully verified for the quartz-air-water system. Our results can be used in future studies to determine optimal injected water compositions for specific rock-oil-brine and other systems with consideration of reservoir temperature.

Trait Vs. Skill: Individual Differences -- Survey Questions

This document is UUR survey questions for use in an exploratory express LDRD experiment. The purpose of the study is to understand if people overestimate their performance only in some situations or some people are more prone to it do to an underlying trait. To investigate our aims, we must use 3 experimental tasks: two domain general (an English grammar task a logic task) and a domain specific task (a science & technology questionnaire). The reason we are using these tasks is to see if people overestimate their abilities on tasks they are more familiar with (grammar and logic) but not on domains in which they are more specialized (science and technology). To understand the traits and characteristics of our participants, we are using 7 well-validated assessments from the field of psychology. All questionnaires are available for research and teaching purposes. Citations for all materials have been included.

Scaling Law for Cloud-Rise Velocity vs. Scaled Height of Burst (SHOB)

The shockwave produced by a nuclear detonation leaves a low-density region in the vicinity of air zero (i.e., the point of detonation). As the shockwave degenerates into an acoustic wave, the buoyant force takes over and causes the low-density region to begin to rise at speeds that can reach as high as ~200-300 mph. The objective of this project was to find out if this initial cloud rise followed any scaling law, by stimulating a cloud rise for a 1 kiloton (kt) detonation and determining if a correlation existed between the scaled-height-of-burst (SHOB) and the scaled-cloud-rise velocity.

DAP: Cosmic Plastics D33/6120 vs. Sumitomo Bakelite 52-01

As soon as you lay eyes on the two data sheets for these materials, Cosmic D33/6120 and Sumitomo Bakelite 52-01, there are some pretty clear differences in mechanical, thermal, electrical, and physical properties. There are three distinct hypotheses relating to why the plastics are so distinctly different from one another: 1. unique composition; 2. different molding procedure; and 3. separate molding parameters A closer look into each of these hypotheses is necessary in explaining why the Sumitomo Bakelite and Cosmic DAPs are so different from one another.

Experimental Assessment of Elastic Modulus vs. Relative Density for Stretch- and Bend-Dominated Lattices

This project was designed to study the possibility of using structural properties of lattices to replicate the material properties of certain hard to manufacture designs and use topology optimization to determine the lattice type and density required to mimic these properties. The integration of additively manufactured lattice structures with topology optimization highlights the need for well characterized mechanical properties and uncertainty analyses to insure these optimized structures respond as predicted. Stereolithographically printed octet and rhombic dodecahedron lattices were manufactured at 10%, 25% and 65% density by volume. As a separate task, yet integrated into this work, finite element analysis (FEA) was used to predict the printed lattice’s mechanical properties, which were then compared to our experimental results. After comparing FEA and experimentallymeasured elastic moduli, it was determined that the FEA provides highly reliable predictions for the modulus of these printed lattice structures. These lattices also exhibited greater tensile stiffness than that of the solid material demonstrating the flexibility that lattices provide to designing parts with designer structural properties. The accurate printing and reliable modeling of these lattices will enable topology optimization of complex parts from well-characterized rhombic dodecahedron and octet lattice structures of varying densities.
