Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov theory for number-parity-violating fermionic Hamiltonians

It is usually asserted that physical Hamiltonians for fermions must contain an even number of fermion operators. This is indeed true in electronic structure theory. However, when the Jordan–Wigner (JW) transformation is used to map physical spin Hamiltonians to Hamiltonians of spinless fermions, terms that contain an odd number of fermion operators may appear. The resulting fermionic Hamiltonian thus does not have number parity symmetry and requires wave functions that do not have this symmetry either. In this work, we discuss the extension of standard Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov (HFB) theory to the number-parity-nonconserving case. These ideas had appeared in the literature before but, perhaps for lack of practical applications, had, to the best of our knowledge, never been employed. We here present a useful application for this more general HFB theory based on coherent states of the SO(2M + 1) Lie group, where M is the number of orbitals. Here, we also show how using these unusual mean-field states can provide significant improvements when studying the JW transformation of chemically relevant spin Hamiltonians.

Repeated horizontal gene transfer of GAL actose metabolism genes violates Dollo’s law of irreversible loss

Dollo’s law posits that evolutionary losses are irreversible, thereby narrowing the potential paths of evolutionary change. While phenotypic reversals to ancestral states have been observed, little is known about their underlying genetic causes. The genomes of budding yeasts have been shaped by extensive reductive evolution, such as reduced genome sizes and the losses of metabolic capabilities. However, the extent and mechanisms of trait reacquisition after gene loss in yeasts have not been thoroughly studied. Here, through phylogenomic analyses, we reconstructed the evolutionary history of the yeast galactose utilization pathway and observed widespread and repeated losses of the ability to utilize galactose, which occurred concurrently with the losses of GALactose (GAL) utilization genes. Unexpectedly, we detected multiple galactose-utilizing lineages that were deeply embedded within clades that underwent ancient losses of galactose utilization. We show that at least two, and possibly three, lineages reacquired the GAL pathway via yeast-to-yeast horizontal gene transfer. Our results show how trait reacquisition can occur tens of millions of years after an initial loss via horizontal gene transfer from distant relatives. Furthermore, these findings demonstrate that the losses of complex traits and even whole pathways are not always evolutionary dead-ends, highlighting how reversals to ancestral states can occur.

First Results on the Search for Lepton Number Violating Neutrinoless Double-𝛽 Decay with the LEGEND-200 Experiment

The LEGEND Collaboration is searching for neutrinoless double-beta (0⁢𝜈⁢𝛽⁢𝛽) decay by operating high-purity germanium detectors enriched in 76 Ge in a low-background liquid argon environment. Building on key technological innovations from the GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) experiment and the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR experiment, LEGEND-200 has performed a first 0⁢𝜈⁢𝛽⁢𝛽 decay search based on 61.0 kg yr of data. Over half of this exposure comes from our highest performing detectors, including newly developed inverted-coaxial detectors, and is characterized by an estimated background level of 0.5$^{+0.3}_{−0.2}$ ⁢cts/(keV ton yr) in the 0⁢𝜈⁢𝛽⁢𝛽 decay signal region. A combined analysis of data from GERDA, the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR, and LEGEND-200, characterized by a 90% confidence level exclusion sensitivity of 2.8 ×10 26 yr on the half-life of 0⁢𝜈⁢𝛽⁢𝛽 decay, reveals no evidence for a signal and sets a new observed lower limit at 𝑇$^{⁢0𝜈}_{1/2}$ > 1.9 × 10 26 yr (90% confidence level). Assuming the decay is mediated by Majorana neutrinos, this corresponds to an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass in the range 𝑚 𝛽⁢𝛽 < 75–200 meV, depending on the adopted nuclear matrix element.

Violation of the rule of parsimony: Mixed local moment and itinerant Fe magnetism in Fe 3 GeN

Ternary iron nitrides are of considerable interest due to their diverse magnetic properties. We find, based on first principles calculations, that the relatively minor structural distortion from the cubic antiperovskite structure in Fe$_3$GeN, consisting of octahedral rotations, leads to unusual magnetic behavior. In particular, there is a separation into Fe sites with very different magnetic behaviors, specifically a site with Fe atoms having a stable local moment and a site where the Fe shows characteristics of much more itinerant behavior. This shows a remarkable flexibility of the Fe magnetic behavior in these nitrides and points towards the possibility of systems where minor structural and chemical changes can lead to dramatic changes in magnetic properties. The results suggest that, analogously to oxide perovskite materials, modulation of magnetic properties via chemical or strain control of octahedral rotation may be feasible. Furthermore, this may then lead to approaches for tuning magnetism to realize properties of interest, for example tuning magnetic transitions to quantum critical regimes or to proximity to metamagnetic transitions of interest for devices.
