Quantitative Determination of Total Cesium in Savannah River Site (SRS) Tank Waste by Inductively Coupled Plasma Emission Spectroscropy
Utilization of the significant and unique wavelength dynamic range (165 to 1100 nm) available on the Leeman Prodigy Inductively Coupled Plasma Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-ES) allows for quantification of cesium using the emission line 894.347 nm without the potential of Barium interference in nuclear waste samples. Samples are added to a Sodium Peroxide Fusion and Lithium Carbonate buffer in 2% nitric acid solution to increase sensitivity of the easily ionizable (<6 eV) cesium for quantitation to 5 pbb. Through direct comparison of analytical data results, the method is proven to be complementary to the Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis (LOQ 100 ppt) in support of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Nuclear Waste Mission.

Evaluating a Semi-Quantitative, Spectrophotometric Method for the Rapid Determination of Total Rare Earth Element Concentrations in Citrate Leaching Solutions
Quick, reliable methods to measure the rare earth elements (REEs) in process streams are needed to support real-time parameterization and monitoring for a burgeoning number of REE extraction schemes. Such methods would ideally be fast, reproducible, and field-deployable. This study evaluates the feasibility of using a chromogenic indicator, arsenazo(III) (hereafter abbreviated as Arsz(III)) to detect the concentration of REEs in complex citrate leaching solutions using a spectrophotometer. Arsz(III) forms a chromogenic complex with the lanthanide elements that produces a blue/purple color detectable in the visible light range. Matrices of solutions containing varied concentrations of calcium, iron, and lanthanum were scanned in the presence of an Arsz(III) indicator to generate a modeled relationship that could be used to back calculate REE concentrations. While relatively quick (scan times on the order of seconds), the results indicated that the calcium and iron concentrations of typical mining solutions overwhelm the signal of the REEs, to the extent that sensitivity of the method is no less than 50 µM REEs. These results demonstrate the difficulties of accurately measuring trace metals in complex solutions, although the method may still hold utility for processes with significantly lower calcium and iron concentrations or REE concentrations much greater than 50 µM.
Study of 149 Sm Capture and Total Cross Sections for Burnup Credit Applications [Slides]
This presentation highlights how capture and transmission measurements were performed with the DANCE (Detector for Advanced Neutron Capture Experiments) instrument with capture data from 8 eV – 1 keV, and DICER (Device for Indirect Capture Experiments on Radionuclides) instruments with transmission data from 1meV – 1 keV. There were additional measurements of 147 Sm which had contaminant in the samples, 3.4 eV strong resonance, interesting abnormalities. The data analysis is complete and the R-Matrix analysis almost (90%) complete.

Np-237 LoD Measurement by TIMS-Multi-Ion Counting Total Evaporation [Poster]
Requests for ultra-low-level 237 Np analyses highlight the importance of a robust chemical purification and measurement technique for Np. In FY2022, LANL is quantifying the instrumental 237 Np LoD. Need to incorporate a chemical purification procedure for TIMS-MICTE sample preparation. What is the recovery of the chemical purification procedure? What is the ultimate detection limit that can be achieved while incorporating a chemical purification procedure? We have adapted and refined the Pu TIMS-MICTE method for Np analyses. We have determined expected uncertainties for 237 Np TIMS-MICTE measurements. We have increased sensitivity through technique improvements. We have improved method reliability for Np analyses and increased throughput. Apply knowledge gained from progress made in FY2022 to further develop Np sample purification and analyses by TIMSMICTE.
