Machine Learning Decoding of Full Duplex Signals

A full duplex signal is when two endpoints (server one and server two) transmit on a single conductor pair simultaneously and with the same frequency. This results in the waveforms created from each server to be merged with one another when observed at any point along the transmission line making physical analysis of the wave unobtainable. This project was orchestrated to find the means to separate the merged signal into two separate signals which represent the signals originally sent from each server without an active tap.

The effects of process parameters on the properties of manganese-rich carbonate precursors: A study of co-precipitation synthesis using semi-batch reactors

The synthesis of precursors for lithium- and manganese-rich xLi 2 MnO 3 ∙ (1-x)LiMO 2 (M = Ni, Mn, Co) (LMR-NMC) materials is generally carried out via co-precipitation using a continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR) under steady-state conditions. But during the early stages of research (e.g., when screening compositional spaces of interest), using a CSTR in steady-state mode can be time consuming and wasteful. An alternative is to operate the reactor in semi-batch mode, which shortens reaction times and reduces the amount of waste. However, the effect of this mode on the product is not well documented. The present work investigates how several process variables affect the physical properties of Mn-rich NMC carbonate precursors prepared under semi-batch operation of a CSTR. The process variables examined are pH, ammonia concentration of feed solution, process temperature, stirring speed, and reaction time. Overall, the results can help guide research-scale production to support efficient development of Mn-rich carbonates for cathode oxides.

High entropy alloys as catalysts: A focused review

A brief literature review of recent experimental and computational efforts on the use of high entropy alloys (HEAs) as catalysts is presented, while also sharing some perspectives and future insights. To fully broach the vast compositional possibilities of HEA materials, integrating computational modeling with high-throughput experimental synthesis and validation is necessary to accelerate their design and development. Once identified, specific HEAs can be a class of materials for the next generation of catalysts when addressing global challenges related to energy independence, commodity chemical production, environmental remediation, abating emissions, and modernized domestic supply chain resilience.

Fermi-Based Kinetic Model for the Sabatier Reaction: Sabatier Principle and Beyond It

The CO 2 methanation reaction (aka the Sabatier reaction) is one of the important carbon utilization technologies to reduce atmospheric greenhouse gases. In this study, kinetic modeling of the Sabatier reaction proceeding via the CO route has been presented by considering weak and strong chemisorption concepts rooted in electronic theory. Based on the single-route mechanism of the Sabatier reaction, the dependence of the reaction rate on the position of the catalyst Fermi level with respect to the antibonding states of the reagent (CO 2 ) and the product (CH 4 ), is demonstrated with the classic Sabatier volcano-shape. Furthermore, the model was applied to explain experimental results of reaction rates for Ni- and Ru-based catalytic systems and to understand origin of enhancement of turnover frequencies established for dynamic catalysis.

Enabling Realistic Communications Evaluations for ADMS

Increasing penetration levels of inverter-based distributed energy resources (DERs) in distribution systems are creating challenges in system operation. Currently, wired or proprietary wireless communications are used by advanced distribution management systems (ADMS) to detect the state of the system and control the DERs for optimal operation. Wireless communications are an alternative solution that can enable connectivity between the dispersed assets used in distribution system applications. As demand for the seamless integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) continues to increase, proper networking and communications systems are becoming important to support the DER infrastructure. This report summarizes validation of a private wireless LTE network in a laboratory environment. The purpose of this work is to 1) demonstrate the effectiveness of private wireless LTE communication for grid applications and 2) provide a means of evaluating latency and overall performance of wireless communication in grid applications. First, private wireless LTE communication was validated in a direct transfer trip relaying scenario as an example of one-way communications using grid equipment. This study provided a baseline understanding of the variation in latency for seven different kinds of wireless scenarios shown in Figure A below. As expected, weak (attenuated) wireless signal-based communication yielded the widest ranges in latency. When higher priority was set for the trip signal communication, this resulted in lower latency in communication timing. In the final phase of this project, the private wireless LTE network was validated using two-way communications in an advanced distribution management system (ADMS) testbed which was developed in the ESIF at NREL. The purpose of this was to study the impact of wireless communication on grid performance.

Current measurements in the intermittent-contact mode of atomic force microscopy using the Fourier method: a feasibility analysis

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is an important tool for measuring a variety of nanoscale surface properties, such as topography, viscoelasticity, electrical potential and conductivity. Some of these properties are measured using contact methods (static contact or intermittent contact), while others are measured using noncontact methods. Some properties can be measured using different approaches. Conductivity, in particular, is mapped using the contact-mode method. However, this modality can be destructive to delicate samples, since it involves continuously dragging the cantilever tip on the surface during the raster scan, while a constant tip–sample force is applied. In this paper we discuss a possible approach to develop an intermittent-contact conductive AFM mode based on Fourier analysis, whereby the measured current response consists of higher harmonics of the cantilever oscillation frequency. Such an approach may enable the characterization of soft samples with less damage than contact-mode imaging. To explore its feasibility, we derive the analytical form of the tip–sample current that would be obtained for attractive (noncontact) and repulsive (intermittent-contact) dynamic AFM characterization, and compare it with results obtained from numerical simulations. Although significant instrumentation challenges are anticipated, the modelling results are promising and suggest that Fourier-based higher-harmonics current measurement may enable the development of a reliable intermittent-contact conductive AFM method.

Combined Heat and Power Deployment Program

Combined heat and power (CHP) is an efficient and clean approach to generating on-site electric power and useful thermal energy from a single fuel source. Instead of purchasing electricity from the distribution grid and burning fuel in an on-site furnace or boiler to produce thermal energy, CHP provides both energy services to a facility in one energy-efficient step.
