String Midpoint Monitoring for Li-Ion Batteries

The paper introduces the midpoint monitoring method for detecting cell voltage imbalance in a series string of 8 electrochemical cells. Monte Carlo analysis is performed for normal cell End of Discharge open and closed circuit voltage behavior to assess the extent to which derived guard band voltage limits will detect over discharged cells, provide false positive indication, or fail to detect over discharged cells. Forward work is proposed to refine the battery monitoring method for operational use in 28V lithium ion batteries.

Overview and Performance Characterization of Northrop Grumman’s 1 kW Hall Thruster String

Northrop Grumman (NG) Tactical Space SystemsDivisionhas embarked on the development and qualification of a high throughput, low power Hall Thruster String (HTS) using hardware designed and built in-house.Following the success of Mission Extension Vehicles 1 and 2, NG is currently developing the next generation in its lineupof satellite servicing capabilities, the Mission Robotics Vehicle(MRV)and Mission Extension Pod (MEP).MEP’s mission profile imposes highly demanding requirements upon the electric propulsion system. When surveying the industry for available systems, NGwas unable to identify any mature Hall thrustersystems that could satisfy the performance and lifetime requirements for MEP. Eventually, it was decided to vertically integrate the EP development process, partneringwith NASA Glenn Research Center to leverage ongoing development at GRC of a high throughput, low power Hall thruster. The components of the HTS have successfully passed PDR and are currently in the engineering development and test phase. Based on performancecharacterization testingof the development hardware,NG’s low power Hall thruster, dubbed the NGHT-1X, promises to deliver state-of-the-art performanceand lifetime for a sub-kW Hall thruster, achieving total efficiencies of 50-55% over a wide range of throttle conditions. Results of a seriesof characterization tests including integrated systems testingwith the PPUare presented.Qualification methodology andthruster lifetime verification is also discussed. Environmental qualification of the HTS components is expected to completein mid-2023 with a first flight in mid-2024.

Wire-based metallization and stringing for solar cells

Wire-based metallization and stringing techniques for solar cells, and the resulting solar cells, modules, and equipment, are described. In an example, a substrate has a surface. A plurality of N-type and P-type semiconductor regions is disposed in or above the surface of the substrate. A conductive contact structure is disposed on the plurality of N-type and P-type semiconductor regions. The conductive contact structure includes a plurality of conductive wires, each conductive wire of the plurality of conductive wires essentially continuously bonded directly to a corresponding one of the N-type and P-type semiconductor regions.

Method and apparatus for removal of microscopic contaminant particulates from superconducting radio frequency cavities and cavity strings

A method and apparatus for removing microscopic contaminant particulates by high pressure liquid nitrogen jet cleaning from the inner surface of a superconducting radio frequency cavity or a string of multiple cavities and transporting the removed particulates out of the inner space enclosed by the cleaned surfaces. The cleaning method of the invention suppresses field emission, resulting in an increase of the usable accelerating gradient of the cavities and a reduction of the activated radioactivity in accelerator components around cavities.

Metallization and stringing for back-contact solar cells

Metallization and stringing methods for back-contact solar cells, and resulting solar cells, are described. In an example, in one embodiment, a method involves aligning conductive wires over the back sides of adjacent solar cells, wherein the wires are aligned substantially parallel to P-type and N-type doped diffusion regions of the solar cells. The method involves bonding the wires to the back side of each of the solar cells over the P-type and N-type doped diffusion regions. The method further includes cutting every other one of the wires between each adjacent pair of the solar cells.

Subregion entropy for the doubly-holographic global black string

We study the growth of entanglement entropy in a doubly holographic model of gravity for a spherical AdS black hole. Compared to previous work, which was limited to the case of planar black holes, this introduces an extra scale to the problem. This allows us to analyze the interplay between the reorganization of entanglement entropy due to island formation and the onset of the Hawking-Page phase transition and to find the appearance of a new critical black hole radius unrelated to the thermodynamics. We also find that the geometry of the Ryu-Takayanagi surface capturing the physics of islands exhibits drastically different behavior than in the planar case.
