Solid-state switch modeling

A model for predicting voltages and currents of passive loads during turn on and turn off of remote power controllers is presented. The model is concerned with two devices, a five ampere device and a twenty ampere device. The model is presented as a general circuit diagram. The load current is determined by the load parameters and the conditions at switching and the steady state conditions are reached according to time constants determined by the load. The model is used to analyze the turn on and turn off conditions of certain loads including a R-C load and a R-L load.

An idealized model of homogeneous solid propellant combustion

The idealization of solid propellant combustion which consists of a single condensed-phase reaction and a single gas-phase reaction is discussed. A limiting-case solution to the gas-phase conservation equations is developed and tested by comparison with transformed thermocouple data. Closed-form expressions are derived for the burning rate and temperature sensitivity. Both quantities are linked explicitly to the solid and gas activation energies. It is concluded that the combustion phenomenology associated with the above idealization is still not fully understood. It is suggested that a careful study of the various limiting-case solutions tempered by a small set of numerical benchmark calculations might further such understanding.

Analysis and test of a space truss foldable hinge

The Mini-Mast is a 20-meter long deployable, three-longeron, truss-beam being used to develop analytical and experimental methods for predicting the physical behavior of large space structures. With 57 corner-body hinges and 54 mid-body hinges, the Mini-Mast is highly joint-dominated, necessitating inclusion of the compliance of the joints in analytical models. This study demonstrates an approach for calculating the stiffness properties of a complicated hinge called the mid-body hinge. The process includes detailed modeling with solid-body modeling software and the use of finite element analysis. Load-deflection tests were conducted to determine the axial stiffness of the mid-body hinge. This is compared to the axial stiffness value determined from a finite element analysis.

Benchmark of the LAMMPS code on CRESCO and SUMMIT HPC systems

In this work we present the benchmark results of a numerical model where the solid Deuterium grows under gas pressure. The two-phase molecular Deuterium systems (gas + solid) is modeled using classical molecular dynamics approach and the LAMMPS code. The performance between different modern supercomputers are analyzed and compared. In addition, the numerical simulations reach high accuracy to produce results that match with the data collected through laboratory experiments.

Ab initio property predictions of quinary solid solutions using small binary cells

The Set of Small Ordered Structures (SSOS) approach is an ab initio technique for modelling random solid solutions in which many small structures are averaged so that their correlation functions match those of a desired composition. SSOS has been shown to be effective in reducing the cost of density functional theory calculations relative to other well-known techniques such as cluster expansions and special quasirandom structures for modelling solid solutions. Here in this work, we demonstrate that SSOS’s can be constructed using cells with only a subset of elements while still accurately modelling multi-component systems. Specifically, we show that small binary cells can effectively model two quinary high entropy alloys – NbTaTiHfZr and MoNbTaVW – accurately capturing properties such as formation energy, lattice parameters, elastic constants, and root-mean-square atomic displacements. Overall, this insight is useful for those looking to construct databases of such small structures for predicting the properties of multi-component solid solutions, as it greatly decreases the number of structures that needs to be considered.

Force test of a 0.88 percent scale 142-inch diameter solid rocket booster (MSFC model number 461) in the NASA/MSFC high Reynolds number wind tunnel (SA13F)

The results are presented of a force test of a .88 percent scale model of the 142 inch solid rocket booster without protuberances, conducted in the MSFC high Reynolds number wind tunnel. The objective of this test was to obtain aerodynamic force data over a large range of Reynolds numbers. The test was conducted over a Mach number range from 0.4 to 3.5. Reynolds numbers based on model diameter (1.25 inches) ranged from .75 million to 13.5 million. The angle of attack range was from 35 to 145 degrees.

Development of a solid propellant viscoelastic dynamic model

The results of a one year study to develop a dynamic response model for the Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Motor (SRM) propellant are presented. An extensive literature survey was conducted, from which it was concluded that the only significant variables affecting the dynamic response of the SRM propellant are temperature and frequency. Based on this study, and experimental data on propellants related to the SRM propellant, a dynamic constitutive model was developed in the form of a simple power law with temperature incorporated in the form of a modified power law. A computer program was generated which performs a least-squares curve-fit of laboratory data to determine the model parameters and it calculates dynamic moduli at any desired temperature and frequency. Additional studies investigated dynamic scaling laws and the extent of coupling between the SRM propellant and motor cases. It was found, in agreement with other investigations, that the propellant provides all of the mass and damping characteristics whereas the case provides all of the stiffness.

Landsat test of diffuse reflectance models for aquatic suspended solids measurement

Landsat radiance data were used to test mathematical models relating diffuse reflectance to aquatic suspended solids concentration. Digital CCT data for Landsat passes over the Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia were analyzed on a General Electric Co. Image 100 multispectral analysis system. Three data sets were studied separately and together in all combinations with and without solar angle correction. Statistical analysis and chromaticity analysis show that a nonlinear relationship between Landsat radiance and suspended solids concentration is better at curve-fitting than a linear relationship. In particular, the quasi-single-scattering diffuse reflectance model developed by Gordon and coworkers is corroborated. The Gordon model applied to 33 points of MSS 5 data combined from three dates produced r = 0.98.

Experimental validation of model predictive control for solid oxide fuel cells

Here, this paper presents implementation of a model predictive controller (MPC) for an experimental solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system. The MPC controller is based on a gain-scheduled predictor with block-oriented structure that can capture important non-linear effects while still keeping the computational complexity low enough to meet real time control requirements. Experimental results show the MPC is able to regulate the SOFC cathode outlet temperature in the face of startup transients and input perturbations.

Modeling the electrical double layer at solid-state electrochemical interfaces

Models of the electrical double layer (EDL) at electrode/liquid-electrolyte interfaces no longer hold for all-solid-state electrochemistry. Here we show a more general model for the EDL at a solid-state electrochemical interface based on the Poisson–Fermi–Dirac equation. By combining this model with density functional theory predictions, the interconnected electronic and ionic degrees of freedom in all-solid-state batteries, including the electronic band bending and defect concentration variation in the space-charge layer, are captured self-consistently. Along with a general mathematical solution, the EDL structure is presented in various materials that are thermodynamically stable in contact with a lithium metal anode: the solid electrolyte Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) and the solid interlayer materials LiF, Li 2 O and Li 2 CO 3 . Here, the model further allows design of the optimum interlayer thicknesses to minimize the electrostatic barrier for lithium ion transport at relevant solid-state battery interfaces.

Solid rocket booster performance evaluation model. Volume 3: Sample case

The solid rocket booster performance evaluation model (SRB-11) is used to predict internal ballistics in a sample motor. This motor contains a five segmented grain. The first segment has a 14 pointed star configuration with a web which wraps partially around the forward dome. The other segments are circular in cross-section and are tapered along the interior burning surface. Two of the segments are inhibited on the forward face. The nozzle is not assumed to be submerged. The performance prediction is broken into two simulation parts: the delivered end item specific impulse and the propellant properties which are required as inputs for the internal ballistics module are determined; and the internal ballistics for the entire burn duration of the motor are simulated.

Stress evolution and creep deformation in solid-oxide electrolysis cell systems – Dynamic modeling and multi-objective optimization to maximize stack life and efficiency

Here, this study develops a thermal stress model of solid-oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) including a model for creep strain and failure probability that is integrated with a dynamic plant-wide model of a hydrogen production process. Uncertainties in key material properties of the cell are quantified to assess their impact on stress profile variability. The oxygen electrode is found to have about 10 times higher failure probability compared to the fuel electrode. The study shows that if the stack operation is not optimized, cycling operation would lead to stress build-up eventually leading to catastrophic failure. A dynamic optimization problem is set up for obtaining the optimal operational profile considering a variable hydrogen production rate. Due to the tradeoff between the efficiency and stress build-up, the dynamic optimization problem is multi-objective. It is observed that the optimizer can considerably reduce the stress build-up (i.e., can increase the stack life) albeit at the cost of a lower efficiency thus exhibiting strong tradeoffs between capital and operating costs. For example, if the stack would be replaced in 0.5 yr, specific energy requirement would be 48.5 kWh/kg H 2 while for a stack replacement time of about 6 yr, the specific energy requirement rises by about 4.2 %.
