Learning compact physics‐aware delayed photocurrent models using dynamic mode decomposition

Abstract Radiation‐induced photocurrent in semiconductor devices can be simulated using complex physics‐based models, which are accurate, but computationally expensive. This presents a challenge for implementing device characteristics in high‐level circuit simulations where it is computationally infeasible to evaluate detailed models for multiple individual circuit elements. In this work we demonstrate a procedure for learning compact delayed photocurrent models that are efficient enough to implement in large‐scale circuit simulations, but remain faithful to the underlying physics. Our approach utilizes dynamic mode decomposition (DMD), a system identification technique for learning reduced‐order discrete‐time dynamical systems from time series data based on singular value decomposition. To obtain physics‐aware device models, we simulate the excess carrier density induced by radiation pulses by solving numerically the ambipolar diffusion equation, then use the simulated internal state as training data for the DMD algorithm. Our results show that the significantly reduced‐order delayed photocurrent models obtained via this method accurately approximate the dynamics of the internal excess carrier density—which can be used to calculate the induced current at the device boundaries—while remaining compact enough to incorporate into larger circuit simulations.

Randomized Algorithms for Low-Rank Matrix and Tensor Decompositions

This paper surveys randomized algorithms in numerical linear algebra for low-rank decompositions of matrices and tensors. The survey begins with a review of classical matrix algorithms that can be accelerated by randomized dimensionality reduction, such as the singular value decomposition (SVD) or interpolative (ID) and CUR decompositions. Recent advances in randomized dimensionality reduction are discussed, including new methods of fast matrix sketching and sampling techniques, which are incorporated into classical matrix algorithms for fast low-rank matrix approximations. The extension of randomized matrix algorithms to tensors is then explored for several low-rank tensor decompositions in the CP and Tucker formats, including the higher-order SVD, ID, and CUR decomposition.

Celestial operator product expansions and w 1+∞ symmetry for all spins

The operator product expansion of massless celestial primary operators of arbitrary spin is investigated. Poincaré symmetry is found to imply a set of recursion relations on the operator product expansion coefficients of the leading singular terms at tree-level in a holomorphic limit. The symmetry constraints are solved by an Euler beta function with arguments that depend simply on the right-moving conformal weights of the operators in the product. These symmetry-derived coefficients are shown not only to match precisely those arising from momentum-space tree-level collinear limits, but also to obey an infinite number of additional symmetry transformations that respect the algebra of w 1+∞ . In tree-level minimally-coupled gravitational theories, celestial currents are constructed from light transforms of conformally soft gravitons and found to generate the action of w 1+∞ on arbitrary massless celestial primaries. Results include operator product expansion coefficients for fermions as well as those arising from higher-derivative non-minimal couplings of gluons and gravitons.

Renormalization group improved photon impact factors and the high energy virtual photon scattering

We perform the renormalization group improved collinear resummation of the photon-gluon impact factors. We construct the resummed cross section for virtual photon-photon (γ ∗ γ ∗ ) scattering which incorporates the impact factors and BFKL gluon Green’s function up to the next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy in energy. The impact factors include important kinematical effects which are responsible for the most singular poles in Mellin space at next-to-leading order. Further conditions on the resummed cross section are obtained by requiring the consistency with the collinear limits. Our analysis is consistent with previous impact factor calculations at NLO, apart from a new term proportional to C F that we find for the longitudinal polarization. Finally, we use the resummed cross section to compare with the LEP data on the γ ∗ γ ∗ cross section and with previous calculations. The resummed result is lower than the leading logarithmic approximation but higher than the pure next-to-leading one, and is consistent with the experimental data.

Gluon transverse-momentum-dependent distributions from large-momentum effective theory

We demonstrate that gluon transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs) can be extracted from lattice calculations of appropriate Euclidean correlations in large-momentum effective theory (LaMET). Based on perturbative calculations of gluon unpolarized and helicity TMDPDFs, we present a matching formula connecting them and their LaMET counterparts, where the latter are renormalized in a scheme facilitating lattice calculations and converted to the $\overline{MS}$ scheme. The hard matching kernel is given up to one-loop level. We also show that the perturbative result is independent of the prescription used for the pinch-pole singularity in the relevant correlations. Our results offer a guidance for the extraction of gluon TMDPDFs from lattice simulations, and have the potential to greatly facilitate perturbative calculations of the hard matching kernel.

Integrable field theories and their CCFT duals

We compute the Mellin transforms of various two-dimensional integrable S-matrices, providing the first explicit, non-perturbative realizations of celestial CFT. In two dimensions, the Mellin transform is simply the Fourier transform in rapidity space, and the “celestial correlator” has no position dependence. The simplified setting allows us to study the analytic properties of CCFT correlators exactly as a function of the conformal dimensions. We find that the correlators exist as real distributions of the conformal weights, with asymptotics controlled by the mass spectrum and three-point couplings of the model. Coupling these models to a flat space limit of JT gravity preserves integrability and dresses the amplitudes by a rapidly varying gravitational phase. We find that the coupling to gravity smooths out certain singular aspects of the Mellin-transformed correlators.

The reflected entanglement spectrum for free fermions

We consider the reflected entropy and the associated entanglement spectrum for free fermions reduced to two intervals in 1 + 1 dimensions. Working directly in the continuum theory the reflected entropy can be extracted from the spectrum of a singular integral equation whose kernel is determined by the known free fermion modular evolved correlation function. We find the spectrum numerically and analytically in certain limits. For intervals that almost touch the reflected entanglement spectrum approaches the spectrum of the thermal density matrix. This suggests that the reflected entanglement spectrum is well suited to the task of extracting physical data of the theory directly from the ground state wave function.

Thermal energy of a charm-meson molecule in a pion gas

The thermal corrections to the propagator of a loosely bound charm-meson molecule in a pion gas are calculated to next-to-leading order in the heavy-meson expansion using a zero-range effective field theory. Ultraviolet divergences in the charm-meson-pair self energy are canceled by corrections to the charm-meson-pair contact vertex. Terms that are singular at the charm-meson-pair threshold can be absorbed into thermal corrections to the rest energies and kinetic masses of the charm-meson constituents. The remaining terms reduce to a thermal correction to the binding momentum that is proportional to the pion number density and suppressed by the pion/charm-meson mass ratio. The correction gives a tiny decrease in the binding energy of the charm-meson molecule relative to the charm-meson-pair threshold in the pion gas and a change in its thermal width that is small compared to the thermal widths of the charm-meson constituents. These results are encouraging for the prospects of observing X(3872) and $T$$^{+}_{cc}$ (3875) in the expanding hadron gas produced by heavy-ion collisions.

Fibers add flavor. Part II. 5d SCFTs, gauge theories, and dualities

In [1, 2] we proposed an approach based on graphs to characterize 5d superconformal field theories (SCFTs), which arise as compactifications of 6d $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (1 , 0) SCFTs. The graphs, so-called combined fiber diagrams (CFDs), are derived using the realization of 5d SCFTs via M-theory on a non-compact Calabi-Yau threefold with a canonical singularity. In this paper we complement this geometric approach by connecting the CFD of an SCFT to its weakly coupled gauge theory or quiver descriptions and demonstrate that the CFD as recovered from the gauge theory approach is consistent with that as determined by geometry. To each quiver description we also associate a graph, and the embedding of this graph into the CFD that is associated to an SCFT provides a systematic way to enumerate all possible consistent weakly coupled gauge theory descriptions of this SCFT. Furthermore, different embeddings of gauge theory graphs into a fixed CFD can give rise to new UV-dualities for which we provide evidence through an analysis of the prepotential, and which, for some examples, we substantiate by constructing the M-theory geometry in which the dual quiver descriptions are manifest.

Complement to thermodynamics of dyonic Taub-NUT-AdS spacetime

We examine the thermodynamics of Euclidean dyonic Taub-Nut/Bolt-AdS 4 black holes for a variety of horizon geometries to understand how gauge field regularity conditions influence the thermodynamic relations. We find several distinct features that distinguish the NUT-charged case from its dyonic Reissner-Nordstrom counterpart. For the Nut solution, the gauge field vanishes at the horizon and so regularity is ensured. For the Bolt solution we find that the norm of the gauge field is required to vanish at the horizon in order to satisfy both regularity and the first law of thermodynamics. This regularity condition yields a constraint on the electric and magnetic charges and so reduces cohomogeneity of the system; for spherical horizons, the regularity condition removing the Misner string singularity further reduces cohomogeneity. We observe that bolt solutions with increasing electric charge have positive heat capacity, but upon turning on the magnetic charge to make the solution dyonic, we find that the properties of the uncharged one are retained, having both positive and negative heat capacity. We also study the extremal Bolt solution, finding that Misner string disappears at the horizon in the zero temperature limit. We find that the extremal solution has finite-temperature-like behaviour, with the electric potential playing a role similar to temperature.

Integrands of less-supersymmetric Yang-Mills at one loop

We construct a prescriptive, bubble power-counting basis of one-loop integrands suitable for representing amplitude integrands in less-supersymmetric (1 ≤ $\mathcal{N}$ ≤ 4) Yang-Mills theory. With the exception of massless bubbles, all integrands have unambiguous, leading singularities as coefficients defined in field theory; for the massless bubbles on external legs, we find two natural choices which lead to different integrands that highlight distinct aspects of field theory. For concreteness, we give the all-multiplicity integrands for MHV amplitudes, and the split-helicity amplitude integrand for six-particle NMHV. The basis we construct is mostly pure and is divided into to separately UV- and IR-finite sectors of fixed transcendental weight, resulting in UV- and IR-finite ratio functions of n-particle helicity amplitudes.

Exact WKB and the quantum Seiberg-Witten curve for 4d $N$ = 2 pure SU(3) Yang-Mills. Abelianization

We investigate the exact WKB method for the quantum Seiberg-Witten curve of 4d N = 2 pure SU(3) Yang-Mills in the language of abelianization. The relevant differential equation is a third-order equation on $\mathbb{CP}^1$ with two irregular singularities. We employ the exact WKB method to study the solutions to such a third-order equation and the associated Stokes phenomena. We also investigate the exact quantization condition for a certain spectral problem. Moreover, exact WKB analysis leads us to consider new Darboux coordinates on a moduli space of flat SL(3,$\mathbb{C}$)-connections. In particular, in the weak coupling region we encounter coordinates of the higher length-twist type generalizing Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates. The Darboux coordinates are conjectured to admit asymptotic expansions given by the formal quantum periods series and we perform numerical analysis supporting this conjecture.

Exact quantization and analytic continuation

In this paper we give a streamlined derivation of the exact quantization condition (EQC) on the quantum periods of the Schrödinger problem in one dimension with a general polynomial potential, based on Wronskian relations. We further generalize the EQC to potentials with a regular singularity, describing spherical symmetric quantum mechanical systems in a given angular momentum sector. We show that the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) equations that govern the quantum periods undergo nontrivial monodromies as the angular momentum is analytically continued between integer values in the complex plane. The TBA equations together with the EQC are checked numerically against Hamiltonian truncation at real angular momenta and couplings, and are used to explore the analytic continuation of the spectrum on the complex angular momentum plane in examples.

Love symmetry in higher-dimensional rotating black hole spacetimes

We develop a method for constructing a 1-parameter family of globally-defined Love symmetry generators in rotating black hole spacetimes of general dimension. The key ingredient is to focus on the vicinity of the (physical) outer horizon, matching only the radial derivative and the outer horizon pole pieces of the Klein-Gordon operator in the black hole spacetime to the SL(2, ℝ) Casimir operator. After revisiting the 4D Kerr and 5D Myers-Perry cases, the procedure is illustrated on generalized Lense-Thirring spacetimes which describe a wide variety of slowly rotating black hole metrics in any number of dimensions. Such spacetimes are known to admit an extended tower of Killing tensor and Killing vector symmetries and, as demonstrated in this paper, allow for separability of the massive scalar wave equation in Myers-Perry-like coordinates. Interestingly, separability also occurs in the horizon-penetrating Painlevé–Gullstrand coordinates associated with the freely infalling observer who registers flat space around her all the way to singularity.

Right-handed neutrinos and U(1) X symmetry-breaking

In [1] we proposed a model for Heterotic F-theory duality with Wilson line symmetry-breaking and a 4 + 1 split of the F-theory spectral divisor. One goal of this note is to call attention to the existence of right-handed neutrinos in our F-theory model. As pointed out in section 4 of [2] such existence may be evidence for the U(1) X -symmetry that remains after the Higgsing of E 8 via E 8 $\Rightarrow$ SU(5) gauge ⊕ [SU(4) ⊕ U(1) X ] Higgs occasioned by the 4 + 1 split of the spectral divisor. In addition, as a result of the $\mathbb{Z}$ 2 -action that supports the Wilson line we argue that the U(1) X -symmetry is, in fact, broken to $\mathbb{Z}$ 2 -matter parity. Finally we identify co-dimension 3 singularities which determine Yukawa couplings for the MSSM matter fields.

New superstrata from three-dimensional supergravity

We find a two-parameter family of generalized superstrata that emerge as smooth, supersymmetric solutions in three-dimensional gauged supergravity coupled to additional scalar fields. This new family of generalized superstrata are smooth microstate geometries and may be thought of as supersymmetric Coulomb-branch extensions of the original superstrata in which the underlying supertube undergoes an elliptical deformation. These solutions had already been obtained numerically, and as series solutions, to the equations of motion, and some of them were conjectured to be supersymmetric. Here we prove the supersymmetry of an entire two-parameter family and we obtain a highly non-trivial analytic and smooth solution for a one-parameter limit in which the global symmetry of the metric is enhanced to SO(3). We also confirm that the other known families of microstrata are not supersymmetric. We conclude with a cursory analysis of some of the singular brane distributions that can be accessed from three-dimensional gauged supergravity while preserving the same supersymmetries as the superstratum, and therefore of the three-charge black hole.

Scalar-scaffolded gluons and the combinatorial origins of Yang-Mills theory

We present a new formulation for Yang-Mills scattering amplitudes in any number of dimensions and at any loop order, based on the same combinatorial and binary-geometric ideas in kinematic space recently used to give an all-order description of Tr Φ 3 theory. We propose that in a precise sense the amplitudes for a suitably “stringy” form of these two theories are identical, up to a simple shift of kinematic variables. This connection is made possible by describing the amplitudes for n gluons via a “scalar scaffolding”, arising from the scattering of 2n colored scalars coming in n distinct pairs of flavors fusing to produce the gluons. Fundamental properties of the “u-variables”, describing the “binary geometry” for surfaces appearing in the topological expansion, magically guarantee that the kinematically shifted Tr Φ 3 amplitudes satisfy the physical properties needed to be interpreted as scaffolded gluons. These include multilinearity, gauge invariance, and factorization on tree- and loop-level gluon cuts. Our “stringy” scaffolded gluon amplitudes coincide with amplitudes in the bosonic string for extra-dimensional gluon polarizations at tree-level, but differ (and are simpler) at loop-level. We provide many checks on our proposal, including matching non-trivial leading singularities through two loops. The simple counting problem underlying the u variables autonomously “knows” about everything needed to convert colored scalar to gluon amplitudes, exposing a striking “discovery” of Yang-Mills amplitudes from elementary combinatorial ideas in kinematic space.

The price of curiosity: information recovery in de Sitter space

Recent works have revealed that quantum extremal islands can contribute to the fine-grained entropy of black hole radiation reproducing the unitary Page curve. In this paper, we use these results to assess if an observer in de Sitter space can decode information hidden behind their cosmological horizon. By computing the fine-grained entropy of the Gibbons-Hawking radiation in a region where gravity is weak we find that this is possible, but the observer’s curiosity comes at a price. At the same time the island appears, which happens much earlier than the Page time, a singularity forms which the observer will eventually hit. We arrive at this conclusion by studying de Sitter space in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. We emphasize the role of the observer collecting radiation, breaking the thermal equilibrium studied so far in the literature. By analytically solving for the backreacted geometry we show how an island appears in this out-of-equilibrium state.
