The NASA SETI Program - Objectives of the R&D activity

The current activity in NASA's SETI Program is a research and development program jointly carried out by the NASA Ames Research Center and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The purpose of this R&D phase is to develop all prerequisites for a well defined microwave observing program. The specific objectives include the development of a prototype search system which will ultimately be capable of processing data rates up to 10 gigabytes/second. Specialized signal detection algorithms and automated search procedures will be developed and tested with the prototype hardware. A series of field tests will be carried out with the NASA Deep Space Network facilities at Goldstone, CA and with the 305-m radio telescope at the Arecibo Ionospheric Observatory in Puerto Rico.

Plasma and electric field measurements of the PVO in the Venus ionosheath

A study of the plasma and electric-field measurements of the PVO in the Venus ionosheath near the terminator region is presented. A drastic decrease of the particle-flux intensity measured with the plasma instrument is encountered in the inner ionosheath before the inbound crossing of the ionopause. The outer boundary of the region of weak plasma fluxes is consistent with the presence of a rarefaction wave as reported previously from the Mariner 5 (Bridge et at., 1967), Venera (Verigin et al., 1978) and PVO (Spenner et al., 1980) plasma measurements in the Venus wake. Near that boundary there are, in addition, appreciable changes in the electric field signals detected with the PVO electric-field detectors. These observations suggest the existence of local plasma-wave activity associated with turbulent flow conditions in that region.

Mystery cloud of AD 536

The possible cause of the densest and most persistent dry fog on record, which was observed in Europe and the Middle East during AD 536 and 537, is discussed. The fog's long duration toward the south and the high sulfuric acid signal detected in Greenland in ice cores dated around AD 540 support the theory that the fog was due to the explosion of the Rabaul volcano, the occurrence of which has been dated at about AD 540 by the radiocarbon method.

A Model for the Effectiveness of Aircraft Alerting and Warning Systems

The effectiveness of an alerting system with a single alert was analyzed. The pilot's decision behavior is modeled by the theory of signal detection and therefore accounts for different strengths of cross check information and different pilot criteria. The model includes the effects of the alerting and warning system (CAWS) error rate; the pilot's past experience with the CAWS accuracy; his reliance on the CAWS rather than independent monitoring; missed alerts; and adoption of a minimum error or Neyman-Pearson objective rather than minimum cost objective. It is showwn that for rare events: (1) the expected cost is greatly increased if the pilot ignores the a posteriori information in the existence of an alert; (2) the expected cost is insensitive to CAWS Type 1 errors; and (3) the expected cost is sensitive to CAWS type 2 errors only when the cross check information is ambiguous.

Modulated voltage metastable ionization detector

The output current from a metastable ionization detector (MID) is applied to a modulation voltage circuit. An adjustment is made to balance out the background current, and an output current, above background, is applied to an input of a strip chart recorder. For low level concentrations, i.e., low detected output current, the ionization potential will be at a maximum and the metastable ionization detector will operate at its most sensitive level. When the detected current from the metastable ionization detector increases above a predetermined threshold level, a voltage control circuit is activated which turns on a high voltage transistor which acts to reduce the ionization potential. The ionization potential applied to the metastable ionization detector is then varied so as to maintain the detected signal level constant. The variation in ionization potential is now related to the concentration of the constituent and a representative amplitude is applied to another input of said strip chart recorder.

Combined analysis of soft and hard X-ray spectra from flares

An attempt is made to develop a self-consistent model which accounts for the line and continuum data generated by the three X-ray imaging instruments on the SMM satellite. The intensities measured covered the 4-500 kV energy range. The model is based on a differential emission measure and electron beam parameters and is used to predict absolute signals detected by the 15 channels of the SMM sensors. Consideration is given to the thermal contribution, instrumental characteristics, thin target excitation and thick target bremsstrahlung. In comparison with data from a flare event on June 29, 1980, model predictions provide a good fit, including the identification of hard electrons with a 5.3 index during the impulsive phase.

A proposed technique for the Venus balloon telemetry and Doppler frequency recovery

A technique is proposed to accurately estimate the Doppler frequency and demodulate the digitally encoded telemetry signal that contains the measurements from balloon instruments. Since the data are prerecorded, one can take advantage of noncausal estimators that are both simpler and more computationally efficient than the usual closed-loop or real-time estimators for signal detection and carrier tracking. Algorithms for carrier frequency estimation subcarrier demodulation, bit and frame synchronization are described. A Viterbi decoder algorithm using a branch indexing technique has been devised to decode constraint length 6, rate 1/2 convolutional code that is being used by the balloon transmitter. These algorithms are memory efficient and can be implemented on microcomputer systems.

Goldstone field test activities: Sky survey

The goals are to conduct a research and development program aimed at determining the most effective way to do SETI within the constraints of current technology and estimated budgets. The general search strategy adopted is that which is recommended by the SETI Science Working Group. The strategy for an all sky survey for SETI was further developed over the last year. Scan patterns, scan rates, and signal detection algorithms were developed. Spectral power measurement instrumentation was tested at the Venus Station of the Goldstone Deep Space Communication Complex. A specially designed radio frequency interference (RFI) measurement system was built and installed at the Venus Station. A data base management system for storage and retrieval of the RFI data was partially implemented on a VAX 750 computer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

JPL's role in the SETI program

The goal of the JPL SETI Team is to develop the strategies and the instrumentation required to carry out an effective, yet affordable, SETI Microwave Observing Program. The primary responsibility for JPL is the development and implementation of the Sky Survey component of the bimodal search program recommended by the SETI Science Working Group (NASA Technical Paper 2244, 1983). JPL is also responsible for the design and implementation of microwave analog instrumentation (including antenna feed systems, low noise RF amplifiers, antenna monitor and control interfaces, etc.) to cover the microwave window for the Sky Survey and the Target Search observations. The primary site for the current SETI Field Test activity is the Venus Station of the Goldstone Deep Space Communication Complex. A SETI controller was constructed and installed so that pre-programmed and real time SETI monitor and control data can be sent to and from the station controller. This unit will be interfaced with the MCSA. A SETI Hardware Handbook was prepared to describe the various systems that will be used by the project at the Venus Station; the handbook is frequently being expanded and updated. The 65,000 channel FFT Spectrum analyzer in the RFI Surveillance System was modified to permit operation with variable resolutions (300 Hz to less than 1 Hz) and with real-time accumulation, which will enhance the capability of the system for testing Sky Survey search strategies and signal detection algorithms.

Thermal dependence of stress-induced birefringence in single mode optical fibers

Measurements of the change in stress-induced birefringence with temperature in single mode optical fibers are reported. The fibers examined include those with low residual stress birefringence that have circular and elliptical cores. A section of each fiber was placed under constant load with weights and heated inside a furnace. Polarized light was coupled into and out of the fiber ends outside the furnace. Two mutually perpendicular polarization components were analyzed and detected at the fiber output end. Changes in the detected signal levels were monitored as a function of the temperature of the single mode fiber stressed under constant load. Discussion of results and applications to localized stress measurements at high temperatures are presented.

An observed upper limit on stratospheric hydrogen peroxide

Observations collected by a ground-based heterodyne receiver of an emission from the 7(0.7)-6(1.5) rotational torsional transition of H2O2 at 270.610 GHz are studied. An integrated spectrometer output of the data obtained at Mauna Kea, Hawaii in late May and early June of 1983 is presented. The removal of the ozone line background profile from the data is described. With no signal detected in the output of a 256-channel filter spectrometer the calculation of an upper limit on stratospheric H2O2 is possible. The utilization of the mixing ratio profile of Sze and Ko (1984) to compute the limit of H2O2 is examined. An upper limit for H2O2 of approximately 1 x 10 to the 14th/cu cm between 30-50 km is established.

Model verifies design of mobile data modem

It has been proposed to use differential minimum shift keying (DMSK) modems in spacecraft-based mobile communications systems. For an employment of these modems, it is necessary that the transmitted carrier frequency be known prior to signal detection. In addition, the time needed by the receiver to lock onto the carrier frequency must be minimized. The present article is concerned with a DMSK modem developed for the Mobile Satellite Service. This device demonstrated fast acquisition time and good performance in the presence of fading. However, certain problems arose in initial attempts to study the acquisition behavior of the AFC loop through breadboard techniques. The development of a software model of the AFC loop is discussed, taking into account two cases which were plotted using the model. Attention is given to a demonstration of the viability of the modem by an approach involving modeling and analysis of the frequency synchronizer.

Laser heterodyne system for obtaining height profiles of minor species in the atmosphere

An infrared laser heterodyne system for obtaining height profiles of minor constituents of the atmosphere was developed and erected. A brief discription of the system is given. The system consists of a tunable CO2 waveguide laser in the 9 to 11 micrometer band, that is used as a local oscillator and a heliostat that follows the sun and brings in solar radiation, that is mixed with the laser beam in a high speed liquid nitrogen cooled mercury cadmium telluride detector. The detected signal is analysed in a RF spectrum analyser that allows tracing absorption line profiles. Absorption lines of a number of minor constituents in the troposphere and stratosphere, such as O3, NH3, H2O, SO2, ClO, N2O, are in the 9 to 11 micrometer band and overlap with that of CO2 laser range. The experimental system has been made operational and trial observations taken. Current measurements are limited to ozone height profiles. Results are presented.

An amplitude modulated laser system for distance and displacement measurement

A laser distance and displacement measurement system is being developed to monitor small displacements in large space structures for strain analysis and structural control. The reflected laser beam is focused on a detector and the detected signal is mixed with the reference. Small displacements are indicated by a change in modulation frequency which is adjusted to maintain quadrature between the received signal and the reference signal from the voltage-controlled oscillator in a phase-locked loop. Measurement of absolute distance is accomplished by sweeping the modulation frequency from a quadrature lock point to an adjacent lock point.

Contamination control approach for the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer satellite instrumentation

The Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer will perform an all-sky survey and spectroscopic observations over the wavelength range 80-900A. Hydrocarbon and particulate contamination will potentially affect the throughput and signal to noise ratio of the signal detected by the instruments. A witness sample program is here used to investigate and monitor the effects of specific contaminants on EUV reflectivity. Witness samples were intentionally contaminated with thin layers of pump oil. An oil layer 150 A thick was applied and found to evaporate over 8 hours. The EUV reflectivity and imaging properties were then measured and found to be acceptable for grazing angles between 5 and 30 deg. In a second test, layers 500 A thick were deposited and then allowed to evaporate in vacuum; once the oil had evaporated to at least 350 A, the final sample reflectivity was degraded less than 10 percent, but the image was degraded severely by scattering. An outline of the contamination control program is also presented.

Supernova 1987A - A radiosphere resolved with VLBI five days after the neutrino burst

The results of VLBI observations of SN1987A are reported. No emission from the supernova above a level of about 20 percent of the supernova's total flux density was detected, although signals were detected from two calibrator sources with amplitudes roughly equal to those determined in earlier VLBI observations. It is inferred that the supernova's radiosphere was resolved, and a lower bound on the radiosphere's radius of 2.2 mas is estimated from an epoch 5.2 days after the neutrino burst. Given the photometric data from the supernova, a distance to the LMC of 50 + or - 5 kpc, and an apparent expansion velocity that varied systematically with time from 18,000-16,000 km/s, as estimated from the blue-shifted H-alpha absorption lines on the days preceding the observations, it is concluded that 5.2 days after the neutrino burst the supernova's radiosphere was at least 2.5 times larger than the inferred blackbody photosphere, and at least as large as the H-alpha line-forming region.

Sparse distributed memory prototype: Principles of operation

Sparse distributed memory is a generalized random access memory (RAM) for long binary words. Such words can be written into and read from the memory, and they can be used to address the memory. The main attribute of the memory is sensitivity to similarity, meaning that a word can be read back not only by giving the original right address but also by giving one close to it as measured by the Hamming distance between addresses. Large memories of this kind are expected to have wide use in speech and scene analysis, in signal detection and verification, and in adaptive control of automated equipment. The memory can be realized as a simple, massively parallel computer. Digital technology has reached a point where building large memories is becoming practical. The research is aimed at resolving major design issues that have to be faced in building the memories. The design of a prototype memory with 256-bit addresses and from 8K to 128K locations for 256-bit words is described. A key aspect of the design is extensive use of dynamic RAM and other standard components.
