Comparative performance of double-focus and quadrupole mass spectrometers

Light-weight flight type double focus and quadruple mass spectrometer models were compared. Data cover size, weight, and power sensitivity required to achieve same resolution sensitivity at given mass number. Comparison was made using mathematical relationships. Analysis was confined to equal ion source area sensitivity variations not more than 40% over mass range.

Hyperfine structure of excited states and quadrupole moment of Ne-21 using laser-induced line-narrowing techniques.

Observation results are presented on the optical hyperfine structure in Ne-21 obtained with the aid of laser-induced line-narrowing techniques. The output from a long stabilized single-mode 1.15-micron He-Ne laser focused into an external sample cell containing Ne-21 was used in implementing these techniques. Their applicability is demonstrated for optical hyperfine structure observation in systems whose features are ordinarily masked by Doppler broadening.

Empirical model of global thermospheric temperature and composition based on data from the OGO-6 quadrupole mass spectrometer

An empirical global model for magnetically quiet conditions has been derived from longitudinally averaged N2, O, and He densities by means of an expansion in spherical harmonics. The data were obtained by the OGO-6 neutral mass spectrometer and cover the altitude range 400 to 600 km for the period 27 June 1969 to 13 May 1971. The accuracy of the analytical description is of the order of the experimental error for He and O and about three times experimental error for N2, thus providing a reasonable overall representation of the satellite observations. Two model schemes are used: one representing densities extrapolated to 450 km and one representing densities extrapolated to 120 km with exospheric temperatures inferred from N2 densities. Using the best fit model parameters the global thermospheric structure is presented in the form of a number of contour plots.

Quadrupole mass filter with means to generate a noise spectrum exclusive of the resonant frequency of the desired ions to deflect stable ions

A mass spectrometer for the separation or separate indication of ions of different specific electric charges is reported. The instrument uses a periodically varying electric field in its analyzing section to excite the injected ions into oscillations while traveling along their trajectories which are either stable or unstable depending on specific parameters. Only stable trajectory ions pass through the electric field to the collector for indication.

Sound radiation from a high speed axial flow fan due to the inlet turbulence quadrupole interaction

A formula is obtained for the total acoustic power spectra radiated out the front of the fan as a function of frequency. The formula involves the design parameters of the fan as well as the statistical properties of the incident turbulence. Numerical results are calculated for values of the parameters in the range of interest for quiet fans tested at the Lewis Research Center. As in the dipole analysis, when the turbulence correlation lengths become equal to the interblade spacing, the predicted spectra exhibit peaks around the blade passing frequency and its harmonics. There has recently been considerable conjecture about whether the stretching of turbulent eddies as they enter a stationary fan could result in the inlet turbulence being the dominant source of pure tones from nontranslating fans. The results of the current analysis show that, unless the turbulent eddies become quite elongated, this noise source contributes predominantly to the broadband spectrum.

H2 quadrupole rotation-vibration lines in infrared spectra of cool stars

A discrepancy between results concerning the 2-0 band and the 1-0 band obtained by Spinrad (1966) and by other observers is considered, and preliminary results of a search for lines from the stronger 1-0 band are reported. The results are reviewed in the light of recent model-atmosphere calculations. It is suggested that alternative identifications for the 2-0 lines near 1 micron can be found and that the hydrogen molecule is a very minor contributor to these stellar features.
