Vapor-to-glass preparation of biaxially aligned organic semiconductors

Physical vapor deposition (PVD) provides a route to prepare highly stable and anisotropic organic glasses that are utilized in multi-layer structures such as organic light-emitting devices. While previous work has demonstrated that anisotropic glasses with uniaxial symmetry can be prepared by PVD, here, we prepare biaxially aligned glasses in which molecular orientation has a preferred in-plane direction. With the collective effect of the surface equilibration mechanism and template growth on an aligned substrate, macroscopic biaxial alignment is achieved in depositions as much as 180 K below the clearing point TLC−iso (and 50 K below the glass transition temperature Tg) with single-component disk-like (phenanthroperylene ester) and rod-like (itraconazole) mesogens. The preparation of biaxially aligned organic semiconductors adds a new dimension of structural control for vapor-deposited glasses and may enable polarized emission and in-plane control of charge mobility.

Simple model for lambda-doublet propensities in bimolecular reactions

A simple geometric model is presented to account for lambda-doublet propensities in bimolecular reactions A + BC - AB + C. It applies to reactions in which AB is formed in a pi state, and in which the unpaired molecular orbital responsible for lambda-doubling arises from breaking the B-C bond. The lambda-doublet population ratio is predicted to be 2:1 provided that: (1) the motion of A in the transition state determines the plane of rotation of AB; (2) the unpaired pi orbital lying initially along the B-C bond may be resolved into a projection onto the AB plane of rotation and a projection perpendicular to this plane; (3) there is no preferred geometry for dissociation of ABC. The 2:1 lambda-doublet ratio is the 'unconstrained dynamics prior' lambda-doublet distribution for such reactions.

Fabrication Of High-Tc Superconducting Integrated Circuits

Microwave ring resonator fabricated to demonstrate process for fabrication of passive integrated circuits containing high-transition-temperature superconductors. Superconductors increase efficiencies of communication systems, particularly microwave communication systems, by reducing ohmic losses and dispersion of signals. Used to reduce sizes and masses and increase aiming accuracies and tracking speeds of millimeter-wavelength, electronically steerable antennas. High-Tc superconductors preferable for such applications because they operate at higher temperatures than low-Tc superconductors do, therefore, refrigeration systems needed to maintain superconductivity designed smaller and lighter and to consume less power.

Gas transport characteristics of supramolecular networks of metal-coordinated highly branched Poly(ethylene oxide)

Model systems are developed and investigated to better understand the effect of polyether-metal ion interactions on gas separation characteristics. These systems help answer current questions raised by the substantial body of research on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) dispersed in polyethers to improve gas separation performance, where favorable interactions between the metal centers and polyethers are preferred to improve interfacial compatibility. Specifically, we investigate CO 2 /gas transport properties of supramolecular networks comprising cross-linked poly(ethylene oxide) (XLPEO) and dissociable salts, including LiClO 4 , Ni(BF 4 ) 2 , and Cu(BF 4 ) 2 . Increasing the salt content increases the glass transition temperature (T g ) and generally decreases gas diffusivity and permeability, which can be successfully described using a T g -integrated free volume model with an expression similar to the Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher (VTF) equation. Surprisingly, low loadings of LiClO 4 and Cu(BF 4 ) 2 (2 mass% or less) can increase gas permeability by 30%–70% without affecting the CO 2 /gas selectivity. This increase correlates with polyether-metal ion dynamics as measured by dielectric spectroscopy. Understanding how interaction-mediated dynamics affect gas transport will be instrumental to designing MOF-based mixed matrix materials for gas separations.

Ethylene Polymerizations Catalyzed by Fluorinated “Sandwich” Diimine-Nickel and Palladium Complexes

Nickel and palladium complexes bearing “sandwich” diimine ligands with perfluorinated aryl caps have been synthesized, characterized, and explored in ethylene polymerization reactions. The X-ray crystallographic analysis of the precatalysts 16 and 6b show differences from their non-fluorinated analogues 17 and 19, with the perfluorinated aryl caps centered precisely over the nickel and palladium centers which results in higher buried volumes of the metal centers relative to the non-fluorinated analogs. The sandwich diimine palladium complexes 5a and 5b containing perfluorinated aryl caps polymerize ethylene in a controlled fashion with activities that are substantially increased compared with their non-fluorinated analogues. Migratory insertion rates in relevant methyl ethylene complexes agree with activities exhibited in bulk polymerization experiments. DFT studies suggest that facility of ethylene rotation from its preferred orientation perpendicular to the Pd-alkyl bond into a parallel in-plane conformation contributes to the higher polymerization activity for 5b relative to 18a. For these palladium systems polymer molecular weights can be controlled via hydrogen addition (hydrogenolysis) which is unusual for late transition metal-catalyzed olefin polymerizations with no catalyst deactivation occurring. Sandwich diimine nickel complexes 6a and 6b with perfluorinated aryl caps show ethylene polymerization activities that are about half that of classical tetraisopropyl-substituted catalyst 2 but again are more active than the analogous nonfluorinated sandwich complexes. Ethylene polymerizations exhibit living behavior and branched ultra-high molecular weight polyethylenes (UHMWPEs) with very low molecular weight distributions (less than 1.1) are obtained. The activated nickel catalysts are stable in the absence of monomer and show good long-term stability at 25 °C.

Ba 1−x Sr x FeO 3−δ as an improved oxygen storage material for chemical looping air separation: a computational and experimental study

Chemical looping air separation (CLAS) is a promising technology to generate oxygen-rich gas streams to enable efficient carbon dioxide capture during fossil fuel combustion or gasification. CLAS relies on the capture and release of oxygen from the atmosphere using the redox properties of an oxygen-selective solid oxide carrier. This study investigates the redox characteristics of Ba 1−x Sr x FeO 3−δ (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.417, 0.0 ≤ δ ≤ 0.5) using a combination of density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental verification using X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and oxygen-temperature-programmed desorption. The DFT computed energies of the Ba 1−x Sr x FeO 3−δ perovskites reveal a composition-dependent transition from hexagonal to cubic phases as the Sr-concentration or oxygen vacancy concentration increases. Oxygen vacancy formation energies of the cubic perovskites are found to be lower than those of their hexagonal counterparts. A low oxygen diffusion barrier of ∼1 eV combined with the thermodynamic preference of Ba 1−x Sr x FeO 3−δ compositions that form in a cubic phase suggests them as promising candidates for oxygen storage applications. The experimental results corroborate this finding by identifying Ba 0.75 Sr 0.25 FeO 3−δ in the cubic phase as an optimal composition offering low-temperature oxygen storage capacities comparable to that of the state-of-the-art Sr 0.75 Ca 0.25 FeO 3−δ perovskite oxygen storage material at 325 °C and 350 °C.

Design criteria for integrated flight/propulsion control systems for STOVL fighter aircraft

As part of NASA's program to develop technology for short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) fighter aircraft, control system designs have been developed for a conceptual STOVL aircraft. This aircraft is representative of the class of mixed-flow remote-lift concepts that was identified as the preferred design approach by the US/UK STOVL Joint Assessment and Ranking Team. The control system designs have been evaluated throughout the powered-lift flight envelope on Ames Research Center's Vertical Motion Simulator. Items assessed in the control system evaluation were: maximum control power used in transition and vertical flight, control system dynamic response associated with thrust transfer for attitude control, thrust margin in the presence of ground effect and hot gas ingestion, and dynamic thrust response for the engine core. Effects of wind, turbulence, and ship airwake disturbances are incorporated in the evaluation. Results provide the basis for a reassessment of existing flying qualities design criteria applied to STOVL aircraft.

Monitoring Human Performance on Future Deep Space Missions Abstract

NASA and the commercial spacecraft community are working diligently to put the first woman on the moon in the 2024 timeframe. At the same time, NASA researchers are thinking about how to solve the even larger challenges that future deep space missions will bring. Space travel itself is difficult, but astronauts on deep space missions will face obstacles and unknowns never before experienced. In addition to the altered gravity and hostile/closed environment of a spacecraft, deep space crews will face increased radiation, isolation, and distance from Earth. During Extravehicular Activity (EVA, or “spacewalk”) operations, crew will experience increased physical and cognitive workload due to extended types, frequencies and durations of tasks performed on exploration missions in partial gravity environments. All of these stressors will impact crew physical and mental health and performance in difficult-to-anticipate ways. Crew autonomy may be one of the biggest challenges faced. Communication delays and blackouts will occur, and in those situations, the crew may not have access to the Mission Control Center (MCC). They may be forced to be solely dependent on each other and the available information onboard to stay alive, healthy, and achieve the mission. The only conceivable way to meet the challenges of Earth independence is to enable the crew to monitor their own health and performance -- preferably unobtrusively as they perform their duties. Technologies and techniques must be developed to aid the crew in these assessments. A deep space mission is expected to have relatively short periods of high cognitive demand, stress, and fatigue, alongside potentially long periods of cognitive underload during the transit, where boredom, loneliness, and depression can set in. Both ends of this spectrum are dangerous. Crew must be made aware when their task performance drops significantly, when their cognitive workload is too high, when they have lost situation awareness, or when they are too stressed or too fatigued to perform well. They must be able to identify these risks, and then mitigate them with countermeasures available onboard. A number of self-monitoring technologies are presently being explored by NASA to advance crew state determination capabilities. These range from real-time, physiological workload and situation awareness assessments, to crew health measurements determining physical and mental fitness for duty, to task performance metrics such as suit resource expenditures. For EVA tasks during surface exploration missions, biomedical information such as metabolic rate may be provided to crewmembers for situational awareness related to task performance efficiency. In addition, translation distances, hydration, nutrition, inspired CO2 exposure and other consumables usage rates may be useful input metrics for modeling individualized performance during tasks to inform crew or provide estimates of work efficiency. Oculomotor metrics such as gaze dwell time, pupilometry, and eye tracking collected in advanced helmet mounted displays could potentially be used to characterize crew situation awareness. This paper highlights some of these projects, and provides broader discussion about the need for advanced monitoring and smart technologies, as NASA takes the leap into the next generation of space exploration.

First-Principles Statistical Mechanics Study of Magnetic Fluctuations and Order–Disorder in the Spinel LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 Cathode

While significant magnetic interactions exist in lithium transition metal oxides, commonly used as Li-ion cathodes, the interplay between magnetic couplings, disorder, and redox processes remains poorly understood. In this work, we focus on the high-voltage spinel LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 (LNMO) cathode as a model system on which to apply a computational framework that uses first principles-based statistical mechanics methods to predict the finite temperature magnetic properties of materials and provide insights into the complex interplay between magnetic and chemical degrees of freedom. Density functional theory calculations on multiple distinct Ni–Mn orderings within the LNMO system, including the ordered ground-state structure (space group P4332), reveal a preference for a ferrimagnetic arrangement of the Ni and Mn sublattices due to strong antiferromagnetic superexchange interactions between neighboring Mn 4+ and Ni 2+ ions and ferromagnetic Mn–Mn and Ni–Ni couplings, as revealed by magnetic cluster expansions. These results are consistent with qualitative predictions using the Goodenough-Kanamori-Anderson rules. Simulations of the finite temperature magnetic properties of LNMO are conducted using Metropolis Monte Carlo. We find that a “semiclassical” Monte Carlo sampling method based on the Heisenberg Hamiltonian accurately predicts experimental magnetic transition temperatures observed in magnetometry measurements. This study highlights the importance of a robust computational toolkit that accurately captures the complex chemomagnetic interactions and predicts finite temperature magnetic behavior to help analyze experimental magnetic and magnetic resonance spectroscopy data acquired ex situ and operando.
