Understanding the deformation behavior of the γ rich transformative Fe 38.5 Mn 20 Co 20 Cr 15 Si 5 Cu 1.5 complex concentrated alloy using in situ synchrotron diffraction

In situ tensile testing coupled with synchrotron x-ray diffraction was used to study the deformation behavior of metastability-engineered Fe 38.5 Mn 20 Co 20 Cr 15 Si 5 Cu 1.5 complex concentrated alloy. Monitoring the evolution of phase fraction and strain hardening response allowed the determination of true critical stress for the onset of the transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) to be ∼375 MPa, preceded by slip starting at ∼255 MPa. In situ EBSD was used to validate the critical stress for transformation at the microstructure level and observe slip traces to confirm prior slip activity before the transformation. Further, a modeling framework based on stacking fault energy (SFE) was developed to predict the critical stress for transformation. Modeling suggested the SFE of the alloy to fall nearly 15 mJ/m 2 , which agrees well with SFE values calculated using synchrotron peak shifting (12 mJ/m 2 ) and thermodynamic calculation (11 mJ/m 2 ). As a result of γ-fcc to ε-hcp phase transformation, new {0002} ε planes emerged parallel to unaligned {111} γ planes with the tensile loading following S-N orientation relationship. Such selective emergence of new diffraction rings corresponding to ε phase is understood based on the reorientation of γ crystals with reference to tensile axis. In conclusion, this approach can be extended to effectively design alloys based on critical stress required for activating different deformation mechanisms to further push the limits of the strength-ductility envelope.

Transformation of a ceramic precursor to a biomedical (metallic) alloy: Part I – sinterability of Ta 2 O 5 and TiO 2 mixed oxides

Mixed Ta 2 O 5 – TiO 2 binary system was studied by a combination of differential thermal analysis (DTA), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and in situ high temperature X-ray diffraction (HT-XRD) techniques. Different compositions of the mixed oxide powders were fabricated by ball–milling the powdered compositions, pelletizing the homogenized composite powders, and heating the green pellets in air at different temperatures for fixed time intervals. The sintered pellets were evaluated and characterized with respect to porosity, morphology, and phase distribution. DTA runs of the un-sintered powders indicated the onset temperatures for both exothermic and endothermic changes in the binary system. Significant amount of sintering was observed to take place at temperatures higher than 900 °C. Both room and high temperature X-ray diffraction patterns exhibited consistency in phase formation. A ternary compound (TaTiO 4 ) and a ternary solid solution (Ti 0.33 Ta 0.67 O 2 ) were observed to form in both room and high temperatures in addition to the respective binary phases (Ta 2 O 5 and TiO 2 ). A sintering temperature in the range 900–1000 °C was observed to be adequate to achieve the requisite mechanical strength and optimum internal porosity (40–48%) for subsequent electrochemical polarization experiments.

Intrinsic property of defective β-Ga 2 O 3 to self-heal under ionizing irradiation

Damage evolution and phase stability in defective β-Ga 2 O 3 and an irradiation-converted γ-Ga 2 O 3 layer have been studied under ionizing irradiation at 300 K. By exploring athermal nonequilibrium processes in β-Ga 2 O 3 , we succeed in identifying a self-healing mechanism that enables recovery pre-existing damage, characterized by a recovery cross-section of ~0.17 nm 2 . Remarkably, this study further demonstrates that the crystallinity of the irradiation-converted γ-Ga 2 O 3 layer improves under ionizing irradiation. More importantly, X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the highly-strained 𝛾 -phase transforms into a highly-crystalline structure without film disintegration, contrasting to that reported for isochronal annealing at 1000 K. The inelastic thermal spike calculations provide insights into the important effects of energy transfer to electrons in reordering the local atomic arrangement of both defective β- Ga 2 O 3 and 𝛾-Ga 2 O 3 . This behavior suggests a pathway for low-temperature crystallization, offering a promising strategy for fabricating ultrahigh-speed non-volatile memory devices.

Measurement of the free neutron lifetime in a magneto-gravitational trap with in situ detection

Here, in this study, we publish three years of data from the UCNτ experiment performed at the Los Alamos Ultracold Neutron Facility at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. These data are in addition to our previously published data. Our goals in this paper are to better understand and quantify systematic uncertainties and to improve the lifetime statistical precision. We previously reported a value from our 2017–2018 data for the neutron lifetime of 877.75 ± 0.28 (statistical) +0.22–0.16 (systematic) s. We have collected an additional three years of data reported here for the first time. When all the data from UCNτ are averaged for 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, and 2022, we report an updated value for the lifetime of 877.83 ± 0.22 (statistical)+0.20–0.17 (systematic) s. We utilized improved monitor detectors, reduced our correction due to UCN upscattering on residual gas, and employed four different UCN detector geometries both to reduce the correction required for rate dependence and to explore potential contributions due to phase space evolution.

Preliminary study of auto-differentiation algorithm in beam dynamics with stochastic process

Modern particle accelerator optimization requires sophisticated computational methods to address the inherently stochastic nature of beam dynamics. This research develops a framework applying AD to SDEs that specifically addresses beam dynamics challenges in particle accelerators, focusing on accurately modeling and optimizing beam behavior in regimes dominated by stochastic processes. By incorporating key physical phenomena such as synchrotron radiation, wakefield effects, and quantum excitation, the framework aims to provide auto differentiation on the figure of merit of the phase space evolution and beam dynamics. The methodology will enable effective optimization method in a dynamic system with stochastic process.

Solid-State Transformation of an Additive Manufactured Inconel 625 Alloy at 700 °C

Inconel 625, a nickel-based superalloy, has drawn much attention in the emerging field of additive manufacturing (AM) because of its excellent weldability and resistance to hot cracking. The extreme processing condition of AM often introduces enormous residual stress (hundreds of MPa to GPa) in the as-fabricated parts, which requires stress-relief heat treatment to remove or reduce the internal stresses. Typical residual stress heat treatment for AM Inconel 625, conducted at 800 °C or 870 °C, introduces a substantial precipitation of the δ phase, a deleterious intermetallic phase. In this work, we used synchrotron-based in situ scattering and diffraction methods and ex situ electron microscopy to investigate the solid-state transformation of an AM Inconel 625 at 700 °C. Our results show that while the δ phase still precipitates from the matrix at this temperature, its precipitation rate and size at a given time are both smaller when compared with their counterparts during typical heat treatment temperatures of 800 °C and 870 °C. A comparison with thermodynamic modeling predictions elucidates these experimental findings. Our work provides the rigorous microstructural kinetics data required to explore the feasibility of a promising lower-temperature stress-relief heat treatment for AM Inconel 625. The combined methodology is readily extendable to investigate the solid-state transformation of other AM alloys.

Stellar Rotation of T Tauri Stars in the Orion Star-forming Complex

We present a large-scale study of stellar rotation for T Tauri stars in the Orion star-forming complex. We use the projected rotational velocity ($v\sin (i)$) estimations reported by the APOGEE-2 collaboration as well as individual masses and ages derived from the position of the stars in the HR diagram, considering Gaia-EDR3 parallaxes and photometry plus diverse evolutionary models. We find an empirical trend for $v\sin (i)$ decreasing with age for low-mass stars (0.4M ⊙ < M $\star$ < 1.2M ⊙ ). Our results support the existence of a mechanism linking $v\sin (i)$ to the presence of accreting protoplanetary disks, responsible for regulating stellar rotation on timescales of about 6 Myr, which is the timescale in which most of the T Tauri stars lose their inner disk. Our results provide important constraints to models of rotation in the early phases of evolution of young stars and their disks.

Evidence for X-Ray Emission in Excess to the Jet-afterglow Decay 3.5 yr after the Binary Neutron Star Merger GW 170817: A New Emission Component

For the first ~3 yrs after the binary neutron star merger event GW 170817, the radio and X-ray radiation has been dominated by emission from a structured relativistic off-axis jet propagating into a low-density medium with n < 0.01 cm -3 . We report on observational evidence for an excess of X-ray emission at δt > 900 days after the merger. With L x ≈ 5 × 10 38 erg s -1 at 1234 days, the recently detected X-ray emission represents a ≥ 3.2σ (Gaussian equivalent) deviation from the universal post-jet-break model that best fits the multiwavelength afterglow at earlier times. In the context of JetFit afterglow models, current data represent a departure with statistical significance ≥ 3.1σ, depending on the fireball collimation, with the most realistic models showing excesses at the level of ≥ 3.7σ. A lack of detectable 3 GHz radio emission suggests a harder broadband spectrum than the jet afterglow. These properties are consistent with the emergence of a new emission component such as synchrotron radiation from a mildly relativistic shock generated by the expanding merger ejecta, i.e., a kilonova afterglow. In this context, we present a set of ab initio numerical relativity binary neutron star (BNS) merger simulations that show that an X-ray excess supports the presence of a high-velocity tail in the merger ejecta, and argues against the prompt collapse of the merger remnant into a black hole. Radiation from accretion processes on the compact-object remnant represents a viable alternative. Neither a kilonova afterglow nor accretion-powered emission have been observed before, as detections of BNS mergers at this phase of evolution are unprecedented

Fossil dust shells around luminous supergiants

The observed frequency with which infrared excesses appear in F, G, and K supergiants of luminosity class Ia supports the idea that these excesses arise in a 'fossil' circumstellar dust shell that was formed during a prior M-super-giant phase of evolution. The required leftward evolution of the star on the H-R diagram would then imply that the Ledoux, rather than the Schwarzschild, criterion for convective mixing is the correct criterion to use in stellar evolution calculations.

Optically-thick, highly-variable plasma in interacting binaries

The interacting binaries HD 207739 and R Arae were observed by IUE. The ultraviolet spectrum of HD 207739 undergoes complex variations in both the lines and the continuum. Considerable circumstellar matter is present; R Arae (B9p + ?) exhibits SiIV, CIV and even NV absorption features. Both the lines and continuum are variable. An unusual secondary eclipse which is deeper in the ultraviolet than in the visible is present near phase 0.6. The CII line has a P cygni profile with emission present at all observed phases. These systems are probably in a relatively short-lived phase of evolution which is not often observed.

Einstein X-ray survey of the Pleiades - The dependence of X-ray emission on stellar age

The data obtained with two pointed observations of 1 deg by 1 deg fields of the Pleiades region have been analyzed, and the results are presented. The maximum-likelihood X-ray luminosity functions for the Pleiades G and K stars in the cluster are derived, and it is shown that, for the G stars, the Pleiades X-ray luminosity function is significantly brighter than the corresponding function for Hyades G dwarf stars. This finding indicates a dependence of X-ray luminosity on stellar age, which is confirmed by comparison of the same data with median X-ray luminosities of pre-main sequence and local disk population dwarf G stars. It is suggested that the significantly larger number of bright X-ray sources associated with G stars than with K stars, the lack of detection of M stars, and the relatively rapid rotation of the Pleiades K stars can be explained in terms of the onset of internal differential rotation near the convective envelope-radidative core interface after the spin-up phase during evolution to the main sequence.

Complex structure of the supernova remnant HB 3

HB 3 is an old, large (84 pc diameter) supernova remnant associated with the W3 H II region/molecular cloud complex. Observations of the imaging proportional counter (IPC) onboard the Einstein X-ray astronomy satellite have been reprocessed to yield a contour map of X-ray brightness and spectra of various regions of this remnant. The measured IPC flux is 2.4 x 10 to the -11th ergs per sq cm per s, giving a 0.2-4 keV luminosity of 1.6 x 10 to the 35th ergs/s for a column densityof 6 x 10 to the 21st per sq cm. The measured X-ray temperatures reveal a decrease from center to limb of the remnant of 1-0.3 keV. HB 3 is in the late adiabatic blast-wave phase of evolution, 30,000 to 50,000 yr old and with an initial blast energy of 3 x 10 to the 50th ergs. The X-ray map is compared with available radio and optical images. In X-rays, HB 3 has two components - a diffuse emission inside the 84 pc radio remnant and a ring of emission at the center of 30 pc in diameter. The diffuse emission is similar to that from other supernova remnants which are moderately obscured (column density, nH approximately 10 to the 22nd per sq cm). Three possibilities for the origin of the ring are explored: (1) a second supernova remnant, (2) a shocked shell in the interstellar medium surrounding HB 3, and (3) reverse-shock heated ejecta. There is no hot neutron star within the remnant.

Volcanological constraints of Archaean tectonics

Volcanological and trace element geochemical data can be integrated to place some constraints upon the size, character and evolutionary history of Archean volcanic plumbing, and hence indirectly, Archean tectonics. The earliest volcanism in any greenhouse belt is almost universally tholeitic basalt. Archean mafic magma chambers were usually the site of low pressure fractionation of olivine, plagioclase and later Cpx + or - an oxide phase during evolution of tholeitic liquids. Several models suggest basalt becoming more contaminated by sial with time. Data in the Uchi Subprovince shows early felsic volcanics to have fractionated REE patterns followed by flat REE pattern rhyolites. This is interpreted as initial felsic liquids produced by melting of a garnetiferous mafic source followed by large scale melting of LIL-rich sial. Rare andesites in the Uchi Subprovince are produced by basalt fractionation, direct mantle melts and mixing of basaltic and tonalitic liquids. Composite dikes in the Abitibi Subprovince have a basaltic edge with a chill margin, a rhyolitic interior with no basalt-rhyolite chill margin and partially melted sialic inclusions. Ignimbrites in the Uchi and Abitibi Subprovinces have mafic pumice toward the top. Integration of these data suggest initial mantle-derived basaltic liquids pond in a sialic crust, fractionate and melt sial. The inirial melts low in heavy REE are melts of mafic material, subsequently melting of adjacent sial produces a chamber with a felsic upper part underlain by mafic magma.

Formation of the giant planets and their satellite-ring systems - An overview

The origin of the outer planets and their satellite systems is discussed within the framework of astrophysical theories of the origin of stars and the nature of viscous accretion disks. The nature of the outer planet systems is reviewed, and the gas-instability and core-instability models of the origin of the outer planets are described. Critical tests of the models are discussed, showing that the core-instability model is favored. The main phases of evolution that the giant planets underwent during and after their formation are outlined, and the source of their current excess luminosity is considered in detail. The origin of the regular and irregular satellites of the outer planets is discussed, focusing on their formation in viscous accretion disks or by collision, and the possibility of capture by planets.
