Liquid-Level Monitor for Pressurized Vessels

Technique for monitoring water levels in pressurized stainless-steel cylinders, based on differences in gamma-ray attenuation coefficients in water and air, developed. Full-scale laboratory prototype system constructed to test technique. Technique usable with liquids other than water, since linear attenuation coefficients for intermediate-energy gamma rays in air considerably lower than in liquids. Also adaptable for continuous monitoring of liquid levels in resevoir systems and in underground storage tanks.

Progressive Damage and Fracture of Unstiffened and Stiffened Composite Pressure Vessels

Structural durability and damage tolerance characteristics of pressurized graphite/epoxy laminated thin composite cylinders are investigated via computational simulation. Both unstiffened and integral hoop stiffened cylinders are considered. A computer code is utilized for the simulation of composite structural degradation under loading. Damage initiation, growth, accumulation, and propagation to structural fracture are included in the simulation. The increase of burst pressure due to hoop stiffening is quantified. Results demonstrate the significance of the type and size of local defects on the structural durability of pressurized composite cylindrical shells.

Layered Pressure Vessels (LPV) Validating an Aging, Non-compliant Product

General information regarding efforts by NASA to validate continued use of fifty to sixty-five year old passive pressure containing vessels, to assess and reduce risks associated with LPV. With the goal of developing a standard Agency process for continued usage, maintenance, and inspection of LPV.

Ultra-lightweight pressure vessels

Composite tanks fabricated from two metal spheres which are pressure welded and then overwrapped with plastic composite are 66 percent lighter than similar all-metal vessels. Overwrap minimizes shrapnel effects, shifts failure mode to that of cyclic leakage, and withstands minimum burst pressure.

Viscoelastic/damage modeling of filament-wound spherical pressure vessels

A model of the viscoelastic/damage response of a filament-wound spherical vessel used for long-term pressure containment is developed. The matrix material of the composite system is assumed to be linearly viscoelastic. Internal accumulated damage based upon a quadratic relationship between transverse modulus and maximum circumferential strain is postulated. The resulting nonlinear problem is solved by an iterative routine. The elastic-viscoelastic correspondence is employed to produce, in the Laplace domain, the associated elastic solution for the maximum circumferential strain which is inverted by the method of collocation to yield the time-dependent solution. Results obtained with the model are compared to experimental observations.

Stress analysis of pressure vessel assembly

A radome assembly capable of withstanding large hydrostatic pressures was designed with a sapphire hemisperical dome and a plastic housing. These two parts were connected with a stainless steel flange ring. A finite-element stress analysis of this assembly was accomplished and an experimental load test was performed to verify the predicted stresses.

NASA Engineering and Safety Center Technical Bulletin No. 11-01: Nickel-Hydrogen (NiH 2 ) Common Pressure Vessel (CPV) Cell Capacity Loss and Voltage Collapse

During an investigation of anomalous voltages during a NASA scientific mission, a NASA Engineering and Safety Center (NESC) team discovered that the design of NiH 2 CPV batteries may be susceptible to a unique electrolyte bridging between the two internal cells resulting in undesired ionic current flow. This condition can lead to depletion of the capacity within one of the two cells.

A flexible all-temperature pressure vessel

By interrupting lines of stress with convolutions, structure can be designed to contain pressure, operate at cryogenic and high temperatures, and provide flexibility necessary for repetitive cycles of parallel-offset shear translation.

Structural durability of a composite pressure vessel

The effect of local ply fiber fracture on the load-carrying capability and structural behavior of a composite cylindrical shell under internal pressure is investigated, using the CODSTRAN computer code to simulate the composite structural degradation under loading. Results show that an initial outer-surface defect in the vessel begins to grow at a relatively low pressure but exhibits localized gradual damage growth prior to structural fracture and that an initial inner-surface defect shows an overall damage progression and fracture behavior closely similar to that of the outer surface defect. An initial defect located near the mid-thickness of the shell requires a higher pressure to cause damage initiation, but, once the damage initiation pressure is reached, a sudden structural fracture stage is entered by rapid damage propagation at a slightly higher pressure.

Instability analysis of torispherical pressure vessel heads with triangular thin-shell finite elements

The elastic instability of an internally-pressurized cylindrical tank with a torispherical head is investigated using a triangular, doubly curved, thin-shell finite element. The formulation of the finite element, which is based upon cubic displacement functions and a modified principle of potential energy, is first described. Then, the element is verified by comparing numerical results for the linear, stable analysis to alternative solutions for the same problem. The subsequent instability investigation includes the solution of the linearized problem of equilibrium bifurcation, that is, of the classical eigenvalue problem, and a general nonlinear analysis, based on tracing the nonlinear load-displacement path. The critical pressure, obtained with use of the general nonlinear analysis, agrees closely with an experimental result as well as with a numerical solution stemming from an axisymmetric formulation.
