Safety and Security Defense-in-Depth for Nuclear Power Plants

This report describes the risk-informed technical elements that will contribute to a defense-in-depth assessment for cybersecurity. Risk-informed cybersecurity must leverage the technical elements of a risk-informed approach appropriately in order to evaluate cybersecurity risk insights. HAZCADS and HAZOP+ are suitable methodologies to model the connection between digital harm and process hazards. Risk assessment modeling needs to be expanded beyond HAZCADS and HAZOP+ to consider the sequence of events that lead to plant consequences. Leveraging current practices in PRA can lead to categorization of digital assets and prioritizing digital assets commensurate with the risk. Ultimately, the culmination of cyber hazard methodologies, event sequence modeling, and digital asset categorization will facilitate a defense-in-depth assessment of cybersecurity.

Xe Recovery from Nuclear Power Plants Off-Gas Streams: Molecular Simulations of Gas Permeation through DD3R Zeolite Membrane

Recent experimental work has shown zeolite membrane-based separation as a promising potential technology for Kr/Xe gas mixtures due to its much lower energy requirements in comparison to cryogenic distillation, the conventional separation method for such mixtures. Such a separation is also economically rewarding because Xe is in high demand, as a valuable product for many applications/processes. In this work, we have used Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations to study the effects of different conditions, i.e., temperature, pressure, and gas feed composition, on Kr/Xe separation performance via DD3R zeolite membranes. We provide a comprehensive study of the permeation of the different gas species, density profiles, and diffusion coefficients. Molecular simulations show that if the feed is changed from pure Kr/Xe to an equimolar mixture, the Kr/Xe separation factor increases, which agrees with experiments. In addition, when Ar is introduced as a sweep gas, the adsorption of both Kr and Xe increases, while the permeation of pure Kr increases. A similar behavior is observed with equimolar mixtures of Kr/Xe with Ar as the sweep gas. High-separation Kr/Xe selectivity is observed at 50 atm and 425 K but with low total permeation rates. Changing pressure and temperature are found to have profound effects on optimizing the separation selectivity and the permeation throughput.

After heat distribution of a mobile nuclear power plant

A computer program was developed to analyze the transient afterheat temperature and pressure response of a mobile gas-cooled reactor power plant following impact. The program considers (in addition to the standard modes of heat transfer) fission product decay and transport, metal-water reactions, core and shield melting and displacement, and pressure and containment vessel stress response. Analyses were performed for eight cases (both deformed and undeformed models) to verify operability of the program options. The results indicated that for a 350 psi (241 n/sq cm) initial internal pressure, the containment vessel can survive over 100,000 seconds following impact before creep rupture occurs. Recommendations were developed as to directions for redesign to extend containment vessel life.

The Complexity and Challenges of Irradiation-Induced Phase Instability Phenomenon in Nuclear Power Plant Components

High energy irradiation by neutrons or ions of metastable austenitic 300-series steels appears to initiate formation of bcc-phases with different morphology and elemental composition compared to that of retained ferrite. Extensive formation of specific Fe-rich ferrite was observed on the grain boundaries of annealed Russian steel 12Cr18Ni10Ti, an analog of AISI 321, after irradiation in the center-core region of sodium-cooled BN-350 fast reactor (SFR) doses up to 57 dpa at ~1×10-6dpa/sec. The ferrite fraction determined from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) closely matched the magnetic fraction determined using a ferritscope confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis and selected area diffraction patterns. Chemical composition of the secondary phases was determined by energy dispersive X-ray analysis using transmission electron microscope, showing Fe-rich ferrite domains. Fe-ion irradiation (2.3 MeV) was used to study the accumulation of ferrite and martensite phases at higher dpa rates. The very high etchability of these ferrite particles in alcohol-based solutions may signal a very high etching in hot water, leading to accelerated intergranular cracking, especially upon long-term exposure during extended plant lifetimes.

Friction Stir Welding – an Advanced Approach to Repair Nuclear Power Plant Components

Solid phase joining technique friction stir welding (FSW) has been shown to mitigate helium-related issues in fusion welding of irradiated steels. Here, we present detailed characterization results of the first friction stir weld of an irradiated 304L stainless steel (SS) coupon contained 5.2 atomic parts per million (appm) helium. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to characterize a cross section specimen removed from the friction stir weld. No macro helium induced crack was observed at the analyzed cross-section, and only 1 – 1.5 µm size pores were found in the stir zone (SZ) and the thermal-mechanical affected zone (TMAZ). Moreover, some minor helium aggregations (Maximum ~20 µm in length) appeared along grain boundaries inside the TMAZ. Thereafter, miniature tensile specimens were extracted from the SZ, TMAZ and heat affected zone (HAZ), and base metal (BM) and tested. All welded specimens showed high total elongations (> 60%) and strengths (> 75% BM strengths). Overall, the weld made by FSW showed much better results comparing with traditional fusion welding on irradiated SS.
