Inclusive cross section measurements in final states with and without protons for charged-current ν μ -Ar scattering in MicroBooNE

A detailed understanding of inclusive muon neutrino charged-current interactions on argon is crucial to the study of neutrino oscillations in current and future experiments using liquid argon time projection chambers. To that end, we report a comprehensive set of differential cross section measurements for this channel that simultaneously probe the leptonic and hadronic systems by dividing the channel into final states with and without protons. Measurements of the proton kinematics and proton multiplicity of the final state are also presented. For these measurements, we utilize data collected with the MicroBooNE detector from 6.4 × 10 20 protons on target from the Fermilab booster neutrino beam at a mean neutrino energy of approximately 0.8 GeV. We present in detail the cross section extraction procedure, including the unfolding, and model validation that uses data to model comparisons and the conditional constraint formalism to detect mismodeling that may introduce biases to extracted cross sections that are larger than their uncertainties. The validation exposes insufficiencies in the overall model, motivating the inclusion of an additional data-driven reweighting systematic to ensure the accuracy of the unfolding. The extracted results are compared to a number of event generators and their performance is discussed with a focus on the regions of phase space that indicate the greatest need for modeling improvements. Muon-Neutrino Charged-Current Cross Sections from MicroBooNE: First Simultaneous Measurements of Final States with and without Protons for Muon-Neutrino Scattering on Argon

A detailed understanding of muon neutrino charged-current interactions on argon is crucial to the study of neutrino oscillations in current and future experiments using liquid argon time projection chambers. To help fill this need, MicroBooNE has produced a comprehensive set of cross section measurements which simultaneously probe the leptonic and hadronic systems by dividing the inclusive channel into final states with and without protons. Data-driven model validation utilizing the conditional constraint formalism is employed to detect mismodeling that may bias the nominal flux averaged cross section results, which are extracted with the Wiener-SVD unfolding method. The results are compared to widely used event generator predictions revealing significant mismodeling of final states without protons, possibly due to insufficient treatment of final state interactions. These are first differential muon neutrino-argon cross section measurements made simultaneously for final states with and without protons and provide novel information that will help stimulate the improvement of event generator modeling.

MicroBooNE Electron-Neutrino Cross-Section Results

Measurement of the electron-neutrino cross-section with argon ($\nu$-Ar) is crucial for current and future neutrino experiments. Results from MicroBooNE detector, a liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) based at Fermilab, provide the most extensive and precise determination of these electron-neutrino cross-sections. MicroBooNE is situated on both on-axis and off-axis beams: the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) and Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beam, respectively. The background for both beams is dominated by showers from neutral pion decay, necessitating an electron-photon separation technique. In this proceeding, we review three recent electron-neutrino cross-section results from MicroBooNE using NuMI and BNB.

Melting LHC detectors: a novel search for stopped long-lived particles

Particles at the TeV scale with lifetimes of a year or longer could have been abundantly produced at the LHC yet escaped detection because of backgrounds, and could still be trapped within detector materials. With gluinos in split-supersymmetry as a working example, we show that these trapped particles can be recovered from detector materials once prepared in liquid form, for example, by melting silicon detectors, extracting liquid argon from the electromagnetic calorimeter, or constructing a large water pool near ATLAS or CMS. These liquid samples can then be processed using iterative centrifugation followed by mass spectrometry, enabling single-particle sensitivity in macroscopic samples. This method can potentially discover gluinos up to 3 TeV in mass at the HL-LHC. It can also improve upon existing limits for other long-lived particles. For example, it can discover the stop up to 2 TeV, and will also be sensitive to integer-charged particles in the TeV range.

Physics prospects with MeV neutrino-argon charged current interactions using enhanced photon detection in future LArTPCs

Here, we investigate MeV-scale electron neutrino charged current interactions in a liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) equipped with an enhanced photon detection system. Using simulations of deposited energy in charge and light calorimetry, we explore the potential for dual calorimetric neutrino energy reconstruction. We found energy reconstruction based on light-only calorimetry has a better resolution than combined charge and light calorimetry when hadrons are produced in these events. Meanwhile, enhanced light detection offers improved nanosecond timing resolution and broad optical coverage, enabling neutron tagging and identification of delayed low-energy gamma emissions. These advancements open new avenues in low-energy neutrino physics in next-generation LArTPCs.

Measurement of Triple-Differential Inclusive Muon Neutrino Charged-Current Cross Sections on Argon with the MicroBooNE Detector

We report the first measurement of the differential cross section $d^2σ(E_ν)/dcos(θ_µ)dP_µ$for inclusive muon neutrino charged-current scattering on argon. This measurement utilizes data from6.5×10 20 protons on target of exposure collected using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber located on-axis in the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam with a mean neutrino energy of approximately 0.8 GeV. In this note, the mapping from reconstructed kinematics to truth quantities, particularly from reconstructed to true neutrino energy, is validated by comparing the distribution of reconstructed hadronic energy in data to that of the model prediction in different muon scattering angle bins after conditional constraint from the muon momentum distribution in data. The success of this validation gives confidence that the missing energy in the MicroBooNE detector is well-modeled within its uncertainties in simulation, enabling the unfolding to an energy-dependent triple-differential measurement over muon momentum, muon scattering angle, and neutrino energy. The unfolded measurement covers an extensive phase space, providing a wealth of information useful for future LArTPC experiments measuring neutrino oscillations. Comparisons with model predictions show the best agreement with Neut 5.4.0.1 at low energy, and with NuWro 19.02.01 at higher energies, particularly at forward muon scattering angles.

Improving ProtoDUNE pion cross-section measurements with NuGraph Michel-electron tagging

Understanding hadron-argon interactions is essential for precise neutrino energy reconstruction and final-state interaction modeling in liquid-argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) experiments such as DUNE. In particular, pion absorption and charge-exchange processes constitute significant sources of systematic uncertainty in neutrino oscillation measurements. ProtoDUNE-SP, a large-scale LArTPC prototype operated at the CERN Neutrino Platform and exposed to charged-particle test beams in the few-GeV range, enables direct measurements of these processes. This work focuses on the measurement of differential cross sections for pion absorption and charge exchange using the 2 GeV/c pion beam data from the ProtoDUNE-SP run. A key component of this analysis is the identification of Michel electrons from $\pi \rightarrow \mu \rightarrow e$ decay chains, which helps separate different interaction topologies and improves background rejection. Michel electron identification will also assist in reliably calibrating the electromagnetic response in ProtoDUNE-SP data and for the future DUNE detectors. In this analysis, we apply NuGraph to identify Michel electrons. NuGraph is a graph neural network that models detector hits as nodes connected by spatial and temporal edges for particle and topology classification in LArTPC detectors. We first benchmark NuGraph’s Michel electron classification performance using ICEBERG data, a small-scale LArTPC prototype used for DUNE electronics and reconstruction development, and then transfer the approach to ProtoDUNE-SP. This poster presents the analysis strategy, NuGraph-based classification studies, and discusses how these developments are expected to improve the pion cross-section measurement.

First nuclear ultraheavy dark matter search in argon time projection chambers with the DarkSide-50 experiment

We report on the first search for nuclear ultraheavy dark matter (UHDM) in a dual-phase liquid argon time projection chamber using the DarkSide-50 experiment. Unlike conventional weakly interacting massive particles, a nuclear UHDM model may be composed of many dark nucleons and scatter numerous times while passing through the detector. Accounting for energy loss through the Earth’s overburden, we apply selection criteria optimized for multiscatter event topologies using the 532-day low-radiation campaign of the DarkSide-50 detector. Excluded limits on the UHDM-nucleon scattering cross section for dark nucleon masses of m χ = 10 , 50 , 100 , 500 GeV / c 2 are presented.

Multi-Differential Charged Current 𝝂_𝝁− Argon Cross Section without Pions in the Final State Measurement in MicroBooNE , and Current Status of Simultaneous Cross Section Extraction with ANNIE

MicroBooNE, an 85-tonne liquid argon time projection chamber detector is on-axis to the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. MicroBooNE is elucidating neutrino interactions with argon through cross-section measurements to refine interaction models and reduce uncertainties. In this poster, we present recent published single and double multi-differential charged current (CC) cross section with zero pions in the final state (CC-0 ) as a function of muon momentum ( ) and the cosine of the muon angle ( ). We present the details of the event selection and the extraction of 1D and 2D cross sections. We further report on the status of a simultaneous cross-section extraction conducted in conjunction with the ANNIE experiment, which employs a Gd-H O target and operates on the same BNB beamline. This joint measurement enables a precision test of nuclear A-dependence between oxygen and argon, with shared flux and cross-section model correlations leading to the cancellation of systematic uncertainties.

Improving neutrino energy estimation of charged-current interaction events with recurrent neural networks in MicroBooNE

We present a deep learning-based method for estimating the neutrino energy of charged-current neutrino-argon interactions. We employ a recurrent neural network (RNN) architecture for neutrino energy estimation in the MicroBooNE experiment, utilizing liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) detector technology. Traditional energy estimation approaches in LArTPCs, which largely rely on reconstructing and summing visible energies, often experience sizable biases and resolution smearing because of the complex nature of neutrino interactions and the detector response. The estimation of neutrino energy can be improved after considering the kinematics information of reconstructed final-state particles. Utilizing kinematic information of reconstructed particles, the deep learning-based approach shows improved resolution and reduced bias for the muon neutrino Monte Carlo simulation sample compared to the traditional approach. In order to address the common concern about the effectiveness of this method on experimental data, the RNN-based energy estimator is further examined and validated with dedicated data-simulation consistency tests using MicroBooNE data. We also assess its potential impact on a neutrino oscillation study after accounting for all statistical and systematic uncertainties and show that it enhances physics sensitivity. This method has good potential to improve the performance of other physics analyses. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Investigating Interference Term in DUNE And SBND Neutrino Interactions with ACHILLES

Understanding neutrino-nucleus interactions is critical for conducting precise neutrino oscillation ex- periments. However, uncertainties in neutrino-nucleus cross section measurements and our incomplete understanding of nuclear effects remain a significant challenge in neutrino physics. In this paper, we investigate contributions from quantum interference between one-body and two-body interactions in charged-current quasi-elastic (CCQE) neutrino scattering amplitudes, using the ACHILLES event gen- erator. Simulations are performed using muon neutrino flux from Fermilab’s Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB), as well as Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) flux. We observe the neutrino flux interact- ing with Argon nuclei as detected by the Short Baseline Near Detector (SBND) and DUNE Near Detector (DUNE-ND), both Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers (LArTPC). We focus on one muon and one proton final states with cascade interactions. We analyze multiple experimental observables including outgoing kinematic variables, energy-momentum transfer variables, and Transverse Kinematic Imbalance (TKI) variables. In this study, we also investigate the effects of PRISM (a method of sampling flux from multiple off-axis angles which creates different neutrino energy spectra). We find that the ratio of in- terference to quasi-elastic contributions gives a non-flat distribution across a 0-3.5 GeV energy range, indicating that effects of interference vary with the neutrino energy sampled. Our ultimate goal is to reduce systematic uncertainties from neutrino interactions when conducting oscillation experiments by working to disentangle the effects of quantum interference from the quasi-elastic signature.

Measurement of Piplus - Argon Absorption and Charge Exchange Interactions Using Protodune-sp

ProtoDUNE-SP is a prototype detector for the upcoming Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). It is a Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) with a similar configuration to DUNE's detector, and is designed to provide a test-bed for the future experiment. In addition to serving as a prototype, its 0.3 - 7 GeV/ c charged particle beam line provided the ability to perform physics measurements of pions, protons, kaons, muons, and electrons. Importantly, the LArTPC allowed for the measurement of hadronic interactions on argon nuclei.Pions are often present in the final state of neutrino interactions in the energy range of DUNE's neutrino beam. These particles can undergo various types of interactions with argon nuclei in the detector, and this can interfere with the characterization of neutrino interactions in DUNE's far detector. The rate of these so-called secondary interactionswill be accounted for using Monte Carlo simulation of neutrino interactions. Measurements of secondary interaction rates provide necessary data which can be used to estimate and propagate uncertainties or provide tunes of the secondary interaction model used within DUNE's experimental simulation. This analysis provides a simultaneous measurement of the piplus - Ar absorption and charge exchange cross sections using 1 GeV/ c piplus data taken by ProtoDUNE-SP during its initial run period in Fall 2018. This is one of the first hadronic interaction measurements provided by ProtoDUNE-SP. It is also the first piplus - Ar absorption measurement in 20 years and the first ever piplus - Ar charge exchange measurement.Read

Measurement of neutral current single π 0 production on argon with the MicroBooNE detector

We report the first measurement of π 0 production in neutral current (NC) interactions on argon with average neutrino energy of ≲1 GeV. We use data from the MicroBooNE detector’s 85-tonne active volume liquid argon time projection chamber situated in Fermilab’s Booster Neutrino Beam and exposed to 5.89 × 10 20 protons on target for this measurement. Measurements of NC π 0 events are reported for two exclusive event topologies without charged pions. Those include a topology with two photons from the decay of the π 0 and one proton and a topology with two photons and zero protons. Flux-averaged cross-sections for each exclusive topology and for their semi-inclusive combination are extracted (efficiency-correcting for two-plus proton final states), and the results are compared to predictions from the GENIE, NEUT, and NUWRO neutrino event generators. We measure cross sections of 1.243 ± 0.185 (syst) ±0.076 (stat), 0.444 ± 0.098 ± 0.047, and 0.624 ± 0.131 ± 0.075 [10 -38 cm 2 /Ar] for the semi-inclusive NCπ 0 , exclusive NCπ 0 +1p, and exclusive NCπ 0 +0p processes, respectively.

First study of neutrino angle reconstruction using quasielasticlike interactions in MicroBooNE

We investigate the expected precision of the reconstructed neutrino direction using a 𝜈 𝜇 -argon quasielasticlike event topology with one muon and one proton in the final state and the reconstruction capabilities of the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber. This direction is of importance in the context of DUNE sub-GeV atmospheric oscillation studies. MicroBooNE allows for a data-driven quantification of this resolution by investigating the deviation of the reconstructed muon-proton system orientation with respect to the well-known direction of neutrinos originating from the Booster Neutrino Beam with an exposure of 1.3 ×10 21 protons on target. Using simulation studies, we derive the expected sub-GeV DUNE atmospheric-neutrino reconstructed simulated spectrum by developing a reweighting scheme as a function of the true neutrino energy. We further report flux-integrated single- and double-differential cross section measurements of charged-current 𝜈 𝜇 quasielasticlike scattering on argon as a function of the muon-proton system angle using the full MicroBooNE data sets. We also demonstrate the sensitivity of these results to nuclear effects and final state hadronic reinteraction modeling.

Nucleation of Frank Dislocation during the Squeeze-Out Process in Boundary Lubrication: A Molecular Dynamics Study

Liquid–vapor molecular dynamics (LVMD) simulations are performed to reinvestigate the phase transition and solvation force oscillation behavior of a simple argon liquid film confined between two solid surfaces. Our simulations present a novel scenario in which the n → n – 1 layering transitions are accompanied by the formation, climb, and annihilation of Frank partial dislocations during the squeeze-out process under compression. This is indicated by the splitting of the repulsive peaks in the solvation force profile. The detailed analysis reveals that the formation–climb–annihilation mechanism of Frank dislocation occurs during approach and disappears during receding, which would result in force hysteresis. In combination with our recent works, this study provides new insights into the physical property of nanoconfined lubricant films in boundary lubrication.
