Search for the decay χ c 1 ( 3872 ) → π + π − χ c 1

Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 10.9 fb − 1 collected at center-of-mass energies from 4.16 to 4.34 GeV with the BESIII detector, we search for the decay χ c 1 ( 3872 ) → π + π − χ c 1 in the radiative production e + e − → γ χ c 1 ( 3872 ) . No significant signal is observed, and the ratio for the branching fraction of χ c 1 ( 3872 ) → π + π − χ c 1 to χ c 1 ( 3872 ) → π + π − J / ψ is measured as R ≡ B [ χ c 1 ( 3872 ) → π + π − χ c 1 ] B [ χ c 1 ( 3872 ) → π + π − J / ψ ] < 0.18 at 90% confidence level. An upper limit on the product of the cross section σ [ e + e − → γ χ c 1 ( 3872 ) ] and the branching fraction B [ χ c 1 ( 3872 ) → π + π − χ c 1 ] at each center-of-mass energy is also given. These measurements favor the nonconventional charmonium nature of the χ c 1 ( 3872 ) state. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Search for heavy resonances and quantum black holes in eμ, eτ, and μτ final states in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search is reported for heavy resonances and quantum black holes decaying into eμ, eτ, and μτ final states in proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC during 2016–2018 at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 . The eμ, eτ, and μτ invariant mass spectra are reconstructed, and no evidence is found for physics beyond the standard model. Upper limits are set at 95% confidence level on the product of the cross section and branching fraction for lepton flavor violating signals. Three benchmark signals are studied: resonant τ sneutrino production in R parity violating supersymmetric models, heavy Z' gauge bosons with lepton flavor violating decays, and nonresonant quantum black hole production in models with extra spatial dimensions. Resonant τ sneutrinos are excluded for masses up to 4.2TeV in the eμ channel, 3.7TeV in the eτ channel, and 3.6TeV in the μτ channel. A Z' boson with lepton flavor violating couplings is excluded up to a mass of 5.0TeV in the eμ channel, up to 4.3Te V in the eτ channel, and up to 4.1TeV in the μτ channel. Quantum black holes in the benchmark model are excluded up to the threshold mass of 5.6TeV in the eμ channel, 5.2TeV in the eτ channel, and 5.0TeV in the μτ channel. In addition, model-independent limits are extracted to allow comparisons with other models for the same final states and similar event selection requirements. The results of these searches provide the most stringent limits available from collider experiments for heavy particles that undergo lepton flavor violating decays.

Search for hidden-charm tetraquark with strangeness in e + e - → $K$ + $D^{*}_{s}$ - $D$ *0 + c.c.*

We report a search for a heavier partner of the recently observed Z cs (3985) - state, denoted as $Z^{'-}_{cs}$, in the process e + e - → $K$ + $D^{*}_{s}$ - $D$ *0 + c.c., based on e + e - collision data collected at the center-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}$ = 4.661, 4.682 and 4.699 GeV with the BESIII detector. The $Z^{'-}_{cs}$ is of interest as it is expected to be a candidate for a hidden-charm and open-strange tetraquark. A partial-reconstruction technique is used to isolate K + recoil-mass spectra, which are probed for a potential contribution from $Z^{'-}_{cs}$ → $D^{*}_{s}$ - $D$ *0 + (c.c.). We find an excess of $Z^{'-}_{cs}$ → $D^{*}_{s}$ - $D$ *0 + (c.c.) candidates with a significance of 2.1σ, after considering systematic uncertainties, at a mass of 4123.5 ± 0.7 stat. ± 4.7 syst. ) MeV/c 2 . As the data set is limited in size, the upper limits are evaluated at the 90% confidence level on the product of the Born cross sections (σ BORN ) and the branching fraction ($\mathcal{B}$) of $Z^{'-}_{cs}$ → $D^{*}_{s}$ - $D$ *0 , under different assumptions of the $Z^{'-}_{cs}$ mass from 4.120 to 4.140 MeV and of the width from 10 to 50 MeV at the three center-of-mass energies. The upper limits of σ BORN ∙ $\mathcal{B}$ are found to be at the level of $\mathcal{O}$(1) pb at each energy. Larger data samples are needed to confirm the $Z^{'-}_{cs}$ state and clarify its nature in the coming years.

Search for dark matter production in association with bottom quarks and a lepton pair in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

A search is performed for dark matter produced in association with bottom quarks and a pair of electrons or muons in data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to 138 fb −1 of integrated luminosity of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. For the first time at the LHC, the associated production of a bottom quark-antiquark pair and a new heavy neutral Higgs boson (H) that subsequently decays into a leptonically decaying Z boson and a pseudoscalar (a) is explored. The latter acts as a dark matter mediator in the context of the two Higgs doublet model plus a pseudoscalar (2HDM+a). Multivariate techniques that target a wide range of mass configurations for the H and a particles are used. The observations are consistent with the expectations from standard model processes. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the product of cross section and branching fraction of the new particles, ranging from 10 −2 pb for an H mass of 400 GeV to 10 −3 pb for an H mass of 2000 GeV. Constraints on the parameter space of a benchmark 2HDM+a model are derived and compared with expectations in the context of cosmological predictions.

Search for a new scalar decaying into new spin-1 bosons in four-lepton final states with the ATLAS detector

A search is conducted for a new scalar boson S, with a mass distinct from that of the Higgs boson, decaying promptly into four leptons ( ℓ = e , μ) via an intermediate state containing two on-shell, promptly decaying new spin-1 bosons Z d : S → Z d Z d → 4 ℓ , where the Z d boson has a mass between 15 and 300 GeV, and the S boson has a mass between either 30 and 115 GeV or 130 and 800 GeV. The search uses proton–proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1 at a centre-of-mass energy of s = 13 TeV. No significant excess above the Standard Model background expectation is observed. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the production cross-section times branching ratio, σ ( g g → S ) × B ( S → Z d Z d → 4 ℓ ) , as a function of the mass of both particles, m S and m Z d .

Typical medium cluster approach for multibranch phonon localization

The phenomenon of Anderson localization in various disordered media has sustained significant interest over many decades. Specifically, the Anderson localization of phonons has been viewed as a potential mechanism for creating fascinating thermal transport properties in materials. However, despite extensive work, the influence of the vector nature of phonons on the Anderson localization transition has not been well explored. Here, to achieve such an understanding, we extend a recently developed phonon dynamical cluster approximation (DCA) and its typical medium variant (TMDCA) to investigate spectra and localization of multibranch phonons in the presence of pure mass disorder. We validate the new formalism against several limiting cases and exact diagonalization results. A comparison of results for the single-branch versus multibranch case shows that the vector nature of the phonons does not significantly affect the Anderson transition of phonons. The developed multibranch TMDCA formalism can be employed for studying phonon localization in real materials.

Search for pair production of scalar and vector leptoquarks decaying to muons and bottom quarks in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

A search for pair production of scalar and vector leptoquarks (LQs) each decaying to a muon and a bottom quark is performed using proton-proton collision data collected at s = 13 TeV with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb - 1 . No excess above standard model expectation is observed. Scalar (vector) LQs with masses less than 1810 (2120) GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming a 100% branching fraction of the LQ decaying to a muon and a bottom quark. These limits represent the most stringent to date.

Search for a Dark Higgs Boson Produced in Association with Inelastic Dark Matter at the Belle II Experiment

Inelastic dark matter models that have two dark matter particles and a massive dark photon can reproduce the observed relic dark matter density without violating cosmological limits. The mass splitting between the two dark matter particles 𝜒 1 and 𝜒 2 , with 𝑚⁡(𝜒 2 ) >𝑚⁡(𝜒 1 ), is induced by a dark Higgs field and a corresponding dark Higgs boson ℎ′. We present a search for dark matter in events with two vertices, at least one of which must be displaced from the interaction region, and missing energy. Using a 365 fb −1 data sample collected at Belle II, which operates at the SuperKEKB 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − collider, we observe no evidence for a signal. We set upper limits on the product of the production cross section 𝜎⁡(𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − → ℎ′⁡𝜒 1 ⁢𝜒 2 ), and the product of branching fractions ℬ⁡(𝜒 2 → 𝜒 1⁢ 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − ) ×ℬ⁡(ℎ′ → 𝑥 + ⁢𝑥 − ), where 𝑥 + ⁢𝑥 − indicates 𝜇 + ⁢𝜇 − , 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − , or 𝐾 + ⁢𝐾 − , as functions of ℎ′ mass and lifetime at the level of 10 −1 fb. We set model-dependent upper limits on the dark Higgs mixing angle at the level of 10 −5 and on the dark photon kinetic mixing parameter at the level of 10 −3 . This is the first search for dark Higgs bosons in association with inelastic dark matter.

The genetic basis for panicle trait variation in switchgrass ( Panicum virgatum )

Grass species exhibit large diversity in panicle architecture influenced by genes, the environment, and their interaction. The genetic study of panicle architecture in perennial grasses is limited. In this study, we evaluate the genetic basis of panicle architecture including panicle length, primary branching number, and secondary branching number in an outcrossed switchgrass QTL population grown across ten field sites in the central USA through multi-environment mixed QTL analysis. We also evaluate genetic effects in a diversity panel of switchgrass grown at three of the ten field sites using genome-wide association (GWAS) and multivariate adaptive shrinkage. Furthermore, we search for candidate genes underlying panicle traits in both of these independent mapping populations. Overall, 18 QTL were detected in the QTL mapping population for the three panicle traits, and 146 unlinked genomic regions in the diversity panel affected one or more panicle trait. Twelve of the QTL exhibited consistent effects (i.e., no QTL by environment interactions or no QTL × E), and most (four of six) of the effects with QTL × E exhibited site-specific effects. Most (59.3%) significant partially linked diversity panel SNPs had significant effects in all panicle traits and all field sites and showed pervasive pleiotropy and limited environment interactions. Panicle QTL co-localized with significant SNPs found using GWAS, providing additional power to distinguish between true and false associations in the diversity panel.

Search for Z' bosons decaying to pairs of heavy Majorana neutrinos in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

A search for the production of pairs of heavy Majorana neutrinos (N ℓ ) from the decays of Z' bosons is performed using the CMS detector at the LHC. The data were collected in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt s$ = 13 TeV, with an integrated luminosity of 138 fb –1 . The signature for the search is an excess in the invariant mass distribution of the final-state objects, two same-flavor leptons (e or μ) and at least two jets. No significant excess of events beyond the expected background is observed. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the product of the Z' production cross section and its branching fraction to a pair of N ℓ , as functions of N ℓ and Z' boson masses (m N ℓ and m Z' , respectively) for m Z' from 0.4 to 4.6 TeV and m N ℓ from 0.1 TeV to m Z' /2. In the theoretical framework of a left-right symmetric model, exclusion bounds in the m N ℓ -m Z' plane are presented in both the electron and muon channels. The observed upper limit on m Z' reaches up to 4.42 TeV. These are the most restrictive limits to date on the mass of N ℓ as a function of the Z' boson mass.

Wave topology in Hall magnetohydrodynamics

Hall magnetohydrodynamics (HMHD) extends ideal MHD by incorporating the Hall effect via the induction equation, making it more accurate for describing plasma behavior at length scales below the ion skin depth. Despite its importance, a comprehensive description of the eigenmodes in HMHD has been lacking. In this work, we derive the complete spectrum and eigenvectors of HMHD waves and identify their underlying topological structure. We prove that the HMHD wave spectrum is homotopic to that of ideal MHD, consisting of three distinct branches: the slow magnetosonic-Hall waves, the shear Alfvén-Hall waves, and the fast magnetosonic-Hall waves, which continuously reduce to their ideal MHD counterparts in the limit of vanishing Hall parameter. Contrary to a recent claim [Mahajan, Sharma, and Lingam, Phys. Plasmas 31, 090701 (2024)], we find that HMHD does not admit any additional wave branches beyond those in ideal MHD. In conclusion, the key qualitative difference lies in the topological nature of the HMHD wave structure: it exhibits nontrivial topology characterized by a Weyl point—an isolated eigenmode degeneracy point—and associated nonzero Chern numbers of the eigenmode bundles over a 2-sphere in 𝐤-space surrounding the Weyl point.

Search for charginos and neutralinos in final states with two boosted hadronically decaying bosons and missing transverse momentum in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for charginos and neutralinos at the Large Hadron Collider using fully hadronic final states and missing transverse momentum is reported. Pair-produced charginos or neutralinos are explored, each decaying into a high-p T Standard Model weak boson. Fully hadronic final states are studied to exploit the advantage of the large branching ratio, and the efficient rejection of backgrounds by identifying the high-p T bosons using large-radius jets and jet substructure information. An integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 of proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is used. No significant excess is found beyond the Standard Model expectation. Exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level are set on wino or higgsino production with various assumptions about the decay branching ratios and the type of lightest supersymmetric particle. A wino (higgsino) mass up to 1060 (900) GeV is excluded when the lightest supersymmetry particle mass is below 400 (240) GeV and the mass splitting is larger than 400 (450) GeV. The sensitivity to high-mass winos and higgsinos is significantly extended relative to previous LHC searches using other final states.

Search for a resonance decaying to a W boson and a photon in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV using leptonic W boson decays

A search for a new charged particle X with mass between 0.3 and 2.0 TeV decaying to a W boson and a photon is presented, using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. Particle X has electric charge $\pm$ 1 and is assumed to have spin 0. The search is performed using the electron and muon decays of the W boson. No significant excess above the predicted background is observed. The upper limit at 95% confidence level on the product of the production cross section of the X and its branching fraction to a W boson and a photon is found to be 94 (137) fb for a 0.3 TeV resonance and 0.75 (0.81) fb for a 2.0 TeV resonance, for an X width-to-mass ratio of 0.01% (5%). This search presents the most stringent constraints to date on the existence of such resonances across the probed mass range. A statistical combination with an earlier study based on the hadronic decay mode of the W boson is also performed, and the upper limit at 95% confidence level for a 2.0 TeV resonance is reduced to 0.50 (0.63) fb for an X width-to-mass ratio of 0.01% (5%).

Search for pair production of vector-like quarks in leptonic final states in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

A search is presented for vector-like T and B quark-antiquark pairs produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Data were collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2016–2018, with an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$. Events are separated into single-lepton, same-sign charge dilepton, and multi-lepton channels. In the analysis of the single-lepton channel a multilayer neural network and jet identification techniques are employed to select signal events, while the same-sign dilepton and multilepton channels rely on the high-energy signature of the signal to distinguish it from standard model backgrounds. The data are consistent with standard model background predictions, and the production of vector-like quark pairs is excluded at 95% confidence level for T quark masses up to 1.54 TeV and B quark masses up to 1.56 TeV, depending on the branching fractions assumed, with maximal sensitivity to decay modes that include multiple top quarks. The limits obtained in this search are the strongest limits to date for $ \textrm{T}\overline{\textrm{T}} $ production, excluding masses below 1.48 TeV for all decays to third generation quarks, and are the strongest limits to date for $ \textrm{B}\overline{\textrm{B}} $ production with B quark decays to tW.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Low temperature polyolefin deconstruction via tandem cracking-hydrogenation

The use of aluminum chloride in dichloromethane to crack polyolefin chains in tandem with alkylation of the resulting products has been previously reported as an efficient polyolefin recycling route. Building off this work, we report that a tandem cracking-hydrogenation system also efficiently converts polyolefins into gasoline-range light alkanes at mild temperatures without needing a hydrocarbon co-reactant. This Lewis acid and hydrogenation bifunctional system uses anhydrous aluminum chloride as the acid catalyst and Pd/C as a hydrogenation catalyst to achieve nearly 80 % conversion of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) at 70 °C in three hours, with 90+% selectivity towards gasoline-range (C 4 -C 12 ) branched alkanes. By combining the endothermic cracking reaction with the exothermic hydrogenation reaction, the thermodynamic limitations to low-temperature polyolefin deconstruction can be overcome. In using hydrogenation instead of alkylation, the system’s carbon efficiency is greatly improved, the cost of the reactants is reduced and the overall mass of both reactants and products reduced as well.

Search for pair-production of vector-like quarks in lepton+jets final states containing at least one b -tagged jet using the Run 2 data from the ATLAS experiment

A search is presented for the pair-production of heavy vector-like quarks in the lepton+jets final state using 140 fb -1 of proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector. The search is optimised for vector-like top-quarks (T) that decay into a W boson and a b-quark, with one W boson decaying leptonically and the other hadronically. Other vector-like quark flavours and decay modes are also considered. Events are selected with one high transverse-momentum electron or muon, large missing transverse momentum, a large-radius jet identified as a W boson, and multiple small-radius jets, at least one of which is b-tagged. Vector-like T-quarks with 100% branching ratio to Wb are excluded at 95% CL for masses below 1700 GeV. These limits are also applied to vector-like Y-quarks, which decay exclusively into a W boson and a b-quark. Isospin singlets with B(T→Wb:Ht:Zt)=1/2:1/4:1/4 are excluded for masses below 1360 GeV.
