A mechanistic study of cellulase adsorption onto lignin

To explore the effect of lignin composition on cellulase adsorption, here dehydrogenation polymers (DHPs) were prepared from p-glucocoumaryl alcohol/coniferin/syringin, giving rise to H-DHP, G-DHP, and S-DHP, respectively. The structures of DHPs were thoroughly characterized and compared by GPC and NMR techniques, and the Langmuir isotherm protocol was applied to determine the cellulase adsorption behaviors of these different types of DHPs. The adsorption study indicated that the binding strength between the DHPs and cellulase varied in the following order: G-DHP > H-DHP > S-DHP. The inhibition of different types of DHPs on enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose was in the same order as the cellulase adsorption, indicating that non-productive adsorption was the main way to influence cellulase. The correlation analysis results showed a positive association between the phenolic hydroxyl group content in DHPs and their maximum adsorption capacity toward enzymes. A negative correlation between the PDI and binding strength was also observed. It was also found that the adsorbed cellulase could be desorbed and retained normal enzyme activity, and so it was presumed that DHPs and cellulase were mainly linked by physisorption such as hydrogen bonding. This study clearly showed that the composition of lignin had a great impact on cellulase, and that G-type lignin exhibited the most detrimental effect. The results could provide useful information on the mechanism of cellulase adsorption onto lignin using DHPs as lignin model compounds.

Correlations of the physicochemical properties of organosolv lignins from Broussonetia papyrifera with their antioxidant activities

To understand the influence of lignin characteristics on their antioxidant activities, lignins were isolated from Broussonetia papyrifera by organosolv pretreatment at different temperatures. The physicochemical features of the lignins were investigated by GPC, 31 P NMR and 2D HSQC NMR analyses. An increase of organosolv pretreatment temperature resulted in a decrease of M w and an increase of the phenolic hydroxyl group content in the isolated lignin. The lignins extracted at higher organosolv pretreatment temperature showed higher antioxidant activity according to the IC 50 determined using DPPH and ABTS. The correlations between the physicochemical properties of organosolv lignins and their antioxidant activities were studied. The contents of phenolic hydroxyl groups, especially syringyl and guaiacyl, and double bonds in the C α position had positive effects on the antioxidant activity of the lignins. Finally, on the other hand, M w and aliphatic hydroxyl groups of the lignins exhibited negative correlations with the antioxidant activity.

An unprecedented quinoid–donor–acceptor strategy to boost the carrier mobilities of semiconducting polymers for organic field-effect transistors

Quinoidal–aromatic conjugated polymers hold great application potential in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). However, the development of high mobility quinoidal–aromatic conjugated polymers still lags behind the more popular donor–acceptor (D–A) conjugated polymers, mainly owing to the lack of a rational design strategy and efficient building block. Herein, a novel quinoid–donor–acceptor (Q–D–A) strategy is demonstrated to modulate the energy-level and boost the charge carrier transport mobility of conjugated polymers as opposed to the D–A system. On the basis of this strategy, a quinoidal–aromatic conjugated polymer, namely PAQM-BT, is designed and synthesized. With the combined use of quinoid, donor and acceptor units in the backbone, the resulting Q–D–A polymer PAQM-BT displays the narrowest bandgap with the deepest-lying lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy level, highest backbone coplanarity, enhanced thin-film crystallinity and smallest effective hole mass ($m^*_h$) in comparison with the corresponding D–A polymer PT3B1 and quinoid–donor (Q–D) polymer PAQM-3T. Benefitting from the more effective intra- and inter-chain charge transport, as corroborated by experiment and theoretical calculations, OFET devices based on PAQM-BT exhibit a highly boosted hole mobility of up to 5.10 cm 2 V -1 s -1 , which is one and four orders of magnitude higher than that of PAQM-3T and PT3B1, respectively, and is among the highest for quinoidal–aromatic conjugated polymers. Finally, the potent Q–D–A strategy not only allows the energy level to be modulated but also leads to effective charge carrier transport, opening up possibilities to the development of high mobility quinoidal–aromatic conjugated polymers based on a variety of quinoids, donors, and acceptors.

Benchmark relativistic delta-coupled-cluster calculations of K-edge core-ionization energies of third-row elements

Here a benchmark computational study of K-edge core-ionization energies of third-row elements using relativistic delta-coupled-cluster (ΔCC) methods and a revised core-valence separation (CVS) scheme is reported. High-level relativistic (HLR) corrections beyond the spin-free exact two-component theory in its one-electron variant (SFX2C-1e), including the contributions from two-electron picture-change effects, spin–orbit coupling, the Breit term, and quantum electrodynamics effects, have been taken into account and demonstrated to play an important role. Relativistic ΔCC calculations are shown to provide accurate results for core-ionization energies of third-row elements. The SFX2C-1e-CVS-ΔCC results augmented with HLR corrections show a maximum deviation of less than 0.5 eV with respect to experimental values.

Photoelectron spectroscopy of cryogenically cooled NiO 2 – via slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging

In this work, high-resolution anion photoelectron spectra of cryogenically cooled NiO 2 – anions, obtained using slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging (cryo-SEVI), are presented in tandem with coupled cluster electronic structure calculations including relativistic effects. The experimental spectra encompass the $\tilde{\text{X}}^1Σ_{\text{g}}^+ ← \tilde{\text{X}}^2Π_{\text{g}}, ã^3Π{\text{g}} ← \tilde{\text{X}}^2Π_{\text{g}}$, and $\tilde{\text{A}}^1Π_{\text{g}} ← \tilde{\text{X}}^2Π_{\text{g}}$ photodetachment transitions of linear ONiO 0/– , revealing previously unobserved vibrational structure in all three electronic bands. The high-resolution afforded by cryo-SEVI allows for the extraction of vibrational frequencies for each state, consistent with those previously measured in the ground state and in good agreement with scalar-relativistic coupled-cluster calculations. Previously unobserved vibrational structure is observed in the $ã^3Π_{\text{g}}$ and $Ã^1Π_{\text{g}}$ states and is tentatively assigned. Further, a refined electron affinity of 3.0464(7) eV for NiO 2 is obtained as well as precise term energies for the ã and à states of NiO 2 of 0.3982(7) and 0.7422(10) eV, respectively. Numerous Franck–Condon forbidden transitions involving the doubly degenerate $ν_2$ bending mode are observed and ascribed to Herzberg-Teller coupling to an excited electronic state.

Resolving atomistic structure and oxygen evolution activity in nickel antimonates

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) requires electrodes that are not only catalytically active, but also stable under harsh electrochemical environments to enable efficient, durable technologies. Our recent report of a stable amorphous Ni 0.5 Sb 0.5 O z OER photoanode established Ni–Sb–O as an important system for computational understanding of both the structural and catalytic behavior of these complex oxides. In the present work we show that Ni x Sb 1-x O z with x > 0.33 crystallizes into a previously unknown phase. Guided by experimental X-ray diffraction, here, we use density functional theory calculations to perform a prototype phase search to identify a broad family of stable and metastable mixed rutile and hexagonal-like phases for x = 0.33, 0.50, and 0.66 compositions. For the identified phases, we predict favorable oxygen vacancy formation energies for Ni-rich compositions under the reducing synthesis conditions which match measured Ni K-edge X-ray absorption spectra. The calculated overpotential for the most active site decreases with increasing Ni content, from 0.91 V (x = 0.33) to 0.49 V (x = 0.66), which captures the experimentally observed trend. We find the active site changes from the Ni–O–Sb bridge to a Ni–O–Ni bridge at increasing Ni concentrations, rather than the commonly studied singly under-coordinated sites. Finally, detailed Pourbaix analysis of the identified phases show excellent electrochemical stability, consistent with experimentally measured low metal ion concentrations in the electrolyte of photoelectrochemical cells. Collectively, our consideration of an ensemble of structures enables identification of the most catalytically prolific structural motifs, aiding the understanding of crystalline and amorphous catalysts and elucidating the co-optimization of activity and durability in nickel antimonates.

Relativistic coupled-cluster calculations of RaOH pertinent to spectroscopic detection and laser cooling

Here a relativistic coupled-cluster study of the low-lying electronic states in the radium monohydroxide molecule (RaOH), a radioactive polyatomic molecule of interest to laser cooling and to the search of new physics beyond the Standard Model, is reported. The level positions of the A 2 Π 1/2 and C 2 Σ states have been computed with an accuracy of around 200 cm –1 to facilitate spectroscopic observation of RaOH using laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy, thereby exploiting the systematic convergence of electron-correlation and basis-set effects in relativistic coupled-cluster calculations. The energy level for the B 2 Δ 3/2 state has also been calculated accurately to conclude that the B 2 Δ 3/2 state lies above the A 2 Π 1/2 state. This confirms X 2 Σ ↔ A 2 Π 1/2 as a promising optical cycling transition for laser cooling RaOH.

Trimerized small-molecule acceptors enable high-performance organic solar cells with high open-circuit voltage and prolonged life-time

Although the recent development of Y-series small-molecule acceptors (SMAs) has led to a dramatic increase in the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs), the operational stability (device lifetime) of OSCs is inadequate for commercialization. In this study, we develop a new trimer acceptor (TYT), consisting of three Y-based molecules linked by electron-donating spacers, to realize an OSC with high-performance (PCE > 18%) and -stability (t 80% lifetime > 8000 h under 1 sun illumination, in which t 80% lifetime is the time required for the PCE of the OSC to reach 80% of its initial value). We demonstrate that the trimerization approach affords an acceptor, TYT, with an upshifted lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy level, which, in turn, affords an efficient OSC with a high open-circuit voltage (0.964 V). In addition, the glass-transition temperature (T g ) of TYT (217 °C) is significantly higher than those of monomer (MYT, T g = 80 °C) and dimer (DYT, T g = 127 °C) acceptors, which effectively suppresses the molecular diffusion of TYT in a blend film with a polymer donor. Accordingly, a TYT-based OSC demonstrates a high PCE (18.2%) and long t 80% lifetime under 1 sun illumination (8454 h), outperforming MYT- and DYT-based OSCs that exhibit PCEs and t 80% lifetimes of 16.4% and 35 h, and 17.3% and 2551 h, respectively. Therefore, this study provides important guidelines for the design of electron acceptors in achieving OSCs with high performance and stability close to a commercial level.

Effect of Hydrophilicity-Imparting Substituents on Exciton Delocalization in Squaraine Dye Aggregates Covalently Templated to DNA Holliday Junctions

Molecular aggregates exhibit emergent properties, including the collective sharing of electronic excitation energy known as exciton delocalization, that can be leveraged in applications such as quantum computing, optical information processing, and light harvesting. In a previous study, we found unexpectedly large excitonic interactions (quantified by the excitonic hopping parameter J m,n ) in DNA-templated aggregates of squaraine (SQ) dyes with hydrophilic-imparting sulfo and butylsulfo substituents. Here, we characterize DNA Holliday junction (DNA-HJ) templated aggregates of an expanded set of SQs and evaluate their optical properties in the context of structural heterogeneity. Specifically, we characterized the orientation of and J m,n between dyes in dimer aggregates of non-chlorinated and chlorinated SQs. Here, three new chlorinated SQs that feature a varying number of butylsulfo substituents were synthesized and attached to a DNA-HJ via a covalent linker to form adjacent and transverse dimers. Various characteristics of the dye, including its hydrophilicity (in terms of log P o/w ) and surface area, and of the substituents, including their local bulkiness and electron withdrawing capacity, were quantified computationally.
