Kinetics of low temperature plasma assisted NH 3 /H 2 oxidation in a nanosecond-pulsed discharge

Ammonia (NH 3 ) has been widely recognized as one of the carbon-neutral fuels. However, ammonia combustion suffers low reactivity and high N 2 O/NO x emissions. Here, to overcome these issues, this work reports plasma assisted NH 3 /H 2 oxidation and unveils the kinetics of fuel oxidation and N 2 O/NO x formation by combining time-resolved laser diagnostics with plasma modeling. Firstly, we found that the NH 3 consumption is promoted with a H 2 blending ratio of 0.3, due to enhancements of H and OH formation by plasma assisted H 2 dissociation. Secondly, at a high reduced electric field, when the H 2 blending ratio increases, the NH 3 oxidation is promoted due to both the HO 2 formation and strong NO kinetic enhancement via NO-HO 2 and NO 2 -H pathways. In the meantime, it is shown that the NO mole fraction also increases with H 2 blending ratio, because the NO formation is enhanced via N( 2 D)-O 2 pathways, and the DeNO x chemistry is weakened with less NH 2 production. By contrast, at a lower reduced electric field, when the H 2 blending ratio increases, the decreased N( 2 D) formation does not produce enough NO to replenish the NO formation drop caused by lower NH 3 concentration. Thirdly, the reduced electric field non-monotonically affects fuel consumption and N 2 O/NO x formation by manipulating electron energy deposition pathways. The NH 3 consumption is maximized with an optimal reduced electric field where N 2 * excitation and O 2 dissociation are most efficient. When the reduced electric field deviates from its optimum, the NH 3 consumption decreases due to the discharge energy deposition to either vibrational excitation or dissociation of N 2 . The N 2 O/NO x emissions governed by the NH 3 oxidation follow the above NH 3 consumption trend.

Preliminary C3 Loading Analysis for Future High-Altitude Unmanned Aircraft in the NAS

This document provides a preliminary assessment and summary of the command, control, and communications (C(sup 3)) loading requirements of a generic future high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aircraft (UA) operating at in the National Airspace System. Two principal types of C(sup 3) traffic are considered in our analysis: communications links providing air traffic services (ATS) to the UA and its human pilot, and the command and control data links enabling the pilot to operate the UA remotely. we have quantified the loading requirements of both types of traffic for two different assumed levels of UA autonomy. Our results indicate that the potential use of UA-borne relays for the ATS links, and the degree of autonomy exercised by the UA during the departure and arrival phases of its flight, will be among the key drivers of C(sup 3) loading and bandwidth requirements.

Single Longitudinal Mode, High Repetition Rate, Q-switched Ho:YLF Laser for Remote Sensing

Ho:YLF/LuLiF lasers have specific applications for remote sensing such as wind-speed measurement and carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration measurement in the atmosphere because the operating wavelength (around 2 m) is located in the eye-safe range and can be tuned to the characteristic lines of CO2 absorption and there is strong backward scattering signal from aerosol (Mie scattering). Experimentally, a diode pumped Ho:Tm:YLF laser has been successfully used as the transmitter of coherent differential absorption lidar for the measurement of with a repetition rate of 5 Hz and pulse energy of 75 mJ [1]. For highly precise CO2 measurements with coherent detection technique, a laser with high repetition rate is required to averaging out the speckle effect [2]. In addition, laser efficiency is critically important for the air/space borne lidar applications, because of the limited power supply. A diode pumped Ho:Tm:YLF laser is difficult to efficiently operate in high repetition rate due to the large heat loading and up-conversion. However, a Tm:fiber laser pumped Ho:YLF laser with low heat loading can be operated at high repetition rates efficiently [3]. No matter whether wind-speed or carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration measurement is the goal, a Ho:YLF/LuLiF laser as the transmitter should operate in a single longitudinal mode. Injection seeding is a valid technique for a Q-switched laser to obtain single longitudinal mode operation. In this paper, we will report the new results for a single longitudinal mode, high repetition rate, Q-switched Ho:YLF laser. In order to avoid spectral hole burning and make injection seeding easier, a four mirror ring cavity is designed for single longitudinal mode, high repetition rate Q-switched Ho:YLF laser. The ramp-fire technique is chosen for injection seeding.

High-accuracy first-principles-based rate coefficients for the reaction of OH and CH 3 OOH

Here, the ˙OH-initiated oxidation of methyl hydroperoxide, which plays an important role in the atmospheric chemistry of methane, was theoretically characterized using high-accuracy composite amHEAT-345(Q) coupled-cluster calculations followed by a two-dimensional E,J resolved master equation analysis. The reaction is found to proceed through two distinct hydrogen-bonded pre-reactive complexes leading to two product channels, in accord with the experimental observations: (i) ˙OH + CH 3 OOH → CH 3 OO˙ + H 2 O with a yield of 0.8 ± 0.1, and (ii) ˙OH + CH 3 OOH → HCHO + ˙OH + H 2 O with a yield of 0.2 ± 0.1. The calculated reaction enthalpies are within 0.2 kcal mol -1 of the benchmark ATcT values. Overall thermal rate coefficients obtained from first principles are found to be in the low-pressure limit at atmospheric pressure; the total rate coefficient can be expressed over the T = 200–450 K range as k(T) = 5.0 × 10 -12 × T -0.152 × exp(287/T) cm 3 s -1 , strongly supporting the experimental results of Vaghjiani and Ravishankara, with which this expression agrees within ca. 15%. The current results show that (i) is the principal reaction channel and support the view that, due to its inherently fast transformations, CH 3 OOH is an important redistribution species for HO x ˙ radicals in the Earth's atmosphere.

Effects of triaxiality and residual n p interaction in the proton emission from Ho 140

Here we present a detailed theoretical investigation of proton emission from 140 Ho within the nonadiabatic quasiparticle approach. The calculated proton emission half-life reproduces well the measured data. The importance of triaxiality and of the residual np interaction are studied. The ground state spin and parity of 139 Dy (daughter) and 140 Ho (parent) are ascertained unambiguously as 7/2 + and 3 – , respectively, by analyzing the rotational energies, half-lives, and branching ratios.

Kinetic study of reaction C 2 H 5 + HO 2 in a photolysis reactor with time-resolved Faraday rotation spectroscopy

The rate constant and branching ratios of ethyl reaction with hydroperoxyl radical, C 2 H 5 + HO 2 (1), a key radical-radical reaction for intermediate temperature combustion chemistry, were measured in situ for the first time in a photolysis Herriott cell by using mid-IR Faraday rotation spectroscopy (FRS) and UV-IR direct absorption spectroscopy (DAS). The microsecond time-resolved diagnostic technique in this work enabled the direct rate measurements of the target reaction at 40 and 80 mbar and reduced the experimental uncertainty considerably. C 2 H 5 and HO 2 radicals were generated by the photolysis of (COCl) 2 /C 2 H 5 I/CH 3 OH/O 2 /He mixture at 266 nm. By direct measurements of the transient profiles of C 2 H 5 , HO 2 and OH concentrations, the overall rate constant for this reaction at 297 K was determined as k 1 (40 mbar) = (3.8 ± 0.8) × 10 –11 cm 3 molecule –1 s –1 and k 1 (80 mbar) = (4.1 ± 1.0) × 10 –11 cm 3 molecule –1 s –1 . As a result, the direct observation of hydroxyl radical (OH) indicated that OH formation channel was the major channel with a branching ratio of 0.8 ± 0.1.
