3D-CHESS: Decentralized, Distributed, Dynamic, and Context-aware Heterogeneous Sensor Systems

This paper describes the objectives and current status of the 3D-CHESS project which aims to demonstrate a new Earth observing strategy based on a context-aware Earth observing sensor web. This sensor web consists of a set of nodes with a knowledge base, heterogeneous sensors, edge computing, and autonomous decision-making capabilities. Context awareness is defined as the ability for the nodes to gather, exchange, and leverage contextual information (e.g., state of the Earth system, state and capabilities of itself and of other nodes in the network, and how those states relate to the dy- namic mission objectives) to improve decision making and planning. The current goal of the project is to demonstrate proof of concept by comparing the performance of a 3D- CHESS sensor web with that of status quo architectures in the context of a multi-sensor inland hydrologic and ecologic monitoring system.

CLAIRE: Enabling Heterogeneous Communication Network Optimization for Robust and Resilient Operations

In this paper, we present the capabilities of the CLAIRE System which provides resilient communications for NASA in presence of interference and congestion for a heterogeneous multi-vendor network. CLAIRE increases mission science data return to improve resource efficiencies and ensures resilience in the unpredictable space environment for NASA missions and communication networks. CLAIRE provides technology / waveform agnostic cognitive control plane that is instantiated at the Application Layer (APP) so that it can ride on NASA’s HDTN bundle protocol or any other protocol stack that is used by the network. The cognitive control plane is instantiated using Heartbeats (HTBTs). CLAIRE is assisted by Wideband UHF-Ka Band RF Sensing that leverages advances in the Direct Digital Transceiver (DDTRX) technology. The Wideband RF Sensing is driven by statistical signal processing and machine learning algorithms. Interference is mitigated using Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA). Finally, CLAIRE addresses congestion using spectrum aware packet forwarding algorithm. CLAIRE provides an extensible protocol that allows passing of RF spectrum situational awareness, cross-layer sensing, delay tolerant networking and dynamic spectrum access information that can help with network optimization. Cross-Layer Sensing (CLS) and CLAIRE Decision Engine (CDE) enable spectrum and delay aware packet forwarding and Dynamic Spectrum Access during cases of severe interference.

Natural sunlight-driven oxidation of Mn 2+ (aq) and heterogeneous formation of Mn oxides on hematite

The oxidation of dissolved Mn 2+ (aq) plays a critical role in driving manganese cycles and regulating the fate of essential elements and contaminants in environmental systems. Based on sluggish oxidation rate, abiotic processes have been considered less effective oxidation pathway for manganese oxidation in environmental systems. Interestingly, a recent study (Jung et al., 2021) has shown that the rapid photochemical oxidation of Mn 2+ (aq) could be a feasible scenario to uncover the potential significance of abiotic Mn 2+ (aq) oxidation. Nevertheless, the significance of photochemical oxidation of Mn 2+ (aq) under natural sunlight exposure remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate the rapid photocatalytic oxidation of Mn 2+ (aq) and the heterogeneous growth of tunnel-structured Mn oxides under simulated freshwater and seawater conditions in the presence of natural sunlight and hematite. The natural sunlight-driven photocatalytic oxidation of Mn 2+ (aq) by hematite showed kinetic constants of 1.02 h -−1 and 0.342 h −1 under freshwater and seawater conditions, respectively. The natural sunlight-driven photocatalytic oxidation rates are quite comparable to the results obtained from the previous laboratory test using artificial sunlight, which has ∼4.5 times stronger light intensity. It is likely because of ∼5.5 times larger light exposure area in the natural sunlight-driven photocatalytic oxidation than that of the laboratory test using artificial sunlight. We also elucidate the roles of cation species in controlling the oxidation rate of Mn 2+ (aq) and the crystalline structure of Mn oxide products. Specifically, in the presence of large amounts of cations, the oxidation rate of Mn 2+ (aq) was slower likely because of competitive adsorption. Furthermore, our findings highlight that Mn 2+ contributes significantly to the formation of large-tunneled Mn oxides. These results illuminate the importance of abiotic photocatalytic processes in controlling the redox chemistry of Mn in real environmental aqueous systems on the oxidation of Mn 2+ (aq), and provide an environmentally sustainable approach to effectively remediate water contaminated with Mn 2+ (aq) using natural sunlight.

The Science Discovery Engine: Connecting Heterogeneous Scientific Data and Information

Transformative science often occurs at the boundaries of different disciplines. Making interdisciplinary science data, software and documentation discoverable and accessible is essential to enabling transformative science. However, connecting this diverse and heterogeneous information is often a challenge due to several factors including the dispersed and sometimes isolated nature of data and the semantic differences between topical areas. NASA’s Science Discovery Engine (SDE) has developed several approaches to tackling these challenges. The SDE is a unified, insightful search experience that enables discovery of NASA’s open science data across five topical areas: astrophysics, biological and physical sciences, Earth science, heliophysics and planetary science. In this presentation, we will discuss our efforts to develop a systematic scientific curation workflow to integrate diverse content into a single search environment. We will also share lessons learned from our work to create a metadata crosswalk across the five disciplines.

Chemical Heterogeneity on Mercury's Surface Revealed by the MESSENGER X-ray Spectrometer

We present the analysis of 205 spatially resolved measurements of the surfacecomposition of Mercury from MESSENGERs X-Ray Spectrometer. The surfacefootprints of these measurements are categorized according to geological terrain. Northernsmooth plains deposits and the plains interior to the Caloris basin differ compositionallyfrom older terrain on Mercury. The older terrain generally has higher MgSi, SSi, andCaSi ratios, and a lower AlSi ratio than the smooth plains. Mercurys surface mineralogyis likely dominated by high-Mg mafic minerals (e.g., enstatite), plagioclase feldspar, andlesser amounts of Ca, Mg, andor Fe sulfides (e.g., oldhamite). The compositionaldifference between the volcanic smooth plains and the older terrain reflects differentabundances of these minerals and points to the crystallization of the smooth plains from amore chemically evolved magma source. High-degree partial melts of enstatite chondritematerial provide a generally good compositional and mineralogical match for much ofthe surface of Mercury. An exception is Fe, for which the low surface abundance onMercury is still higher than that of melts from enstatite chondrites and may indicate anexogenous contribution from meteoroid impacts.

Quantifying Libya-4 Surface Reflectance Heterogeneity With WorldView-1, 2 and EO-1 Hyperion

The land surface imaging (LSI) virtual constellation approach promotes the concept of increasing Earth observations from multiple but disparate satellites. We evaluated this through spectral and spatial domains, by comparing surface reflectance from 30-m Hyperion and 2-m resolution WorldView-2 (WV-2) data in the Libya-4 pseudoinvariant calibration site. We convolved and resampled Hyperion to WV-2 bands using both cubic convolution and nearest neighbor (NN) interpolation. Additionally, WV-2 and WV-1 same-date imagery were processed as a cross-track stereo pair to generate a digital terrain model to evaluate the effects from large (>70 m) linear dunes. Agreement was moderate to low on dune peaks between WV-2 and Hyperion (R2 <; 0.4) but higher in areas of lower elevation and slope (R2 > 0.6). Our results provide a satellite sensor intercomparison protocol for an LSI virtual constellation at high spatial resolution, which should start with geolocation of pixels, followed by NN interpolation to avoid tall dunes that enhance surface reflectance differences across this internationally utilized site.
