Quantile regression-enriched event modeling framework for dropout analysis in high-temperature superconductor manufacturing

High-temperature superconductor (HTS) tapes have shown promising characteristics of high critical current, which are prerequisites for applications in high-field magnets. Due to the unstable growth conditions in the HTS manufacturing process, however, the frequent occurrences of dropouts in the critical current impede the consistent performance of HTS tapes. To manufacture HTS tapes with large scale, high yield, and uniform performance, it is essential to develop novel data analysis approaches for modeling the dropouts and identifying the related important process parameters. Conventional methods for modeling recurrent events, such as the point process, require the extraction of events from quality measurements. As the critical current is a continuous process, it may not comprehensively represent the drop patterns by transforming the time-series measurements into a set of events. Here, to solve this issue, we develop a novel quantile regression-enriched event modeling (QREM) framework that integrates the non-homogeneous Poisson process for modeling the occurrence of dropouts and the quantile regression for capturing the drop patterns. By incorporating the feature selection and regularization, the proposed framework identifies a set of significant process parameters that can potentially cause the dropouts of HTS tapes. The proposed method is tested on real HTS tapes produced using an advanced manufacturing process, successfully identifying important parameters that influence dropout events including the substrate temperature and voltage. The results demonstrate that the proposed QREM method outperforms the standard point process in predicting the occurrence of dropouts.

Evaluation of residual gas fraction estimation methods for cycle-to-cycle combustion variability analysis and modeling

Cycle-to-cycle combustion variability in spark-ignition engines during normal operation is mainly caused by random perturbations of the in-cylinder conditions such as the flow velocity field, homogeneity of the air-fuel distribution, spark energy discharge, and turbulence intensity of the flame front. Such perturbations translate into the variability of the energy released observed at the end of the combustion process. During normal operating conditions, the cycle-to-cycle variability (CCV) of the energy release behaves as random uncorrelated noise. However, during diluted combustion, in either the form of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) or excess air (lean operation), the CCV tends to increase as dilution increases. Moreover, when the ignition limit is reached at high dilution levels, the combustion CCV is exacerbated by sporadic occurrences of incomplete combustion events, and the uncorrelation assumption no longer holds. The low or null energy released by partial burns and misfires has an impact on the following combustion event due to the residual gas that carries burned and unburned gases, which contributes to the deterministic coupling between engine cycles. Many residual gas fraction estimation methods, however, only address the nominal case where complete combustion occurs and combustion events are uncorrelated. Here we evaluate the efficacy of such methods on capturing the effects of partial burns and misfires on the residual gas estimate for high-EGR operation. The advantages and disadvantages of each method are discussed based on their ability to generate cycle-to-cycle estimates. Finally, a comparison between the different estimation techniques is presented based on their usefulness for control-oriented modeling.

Crystal Growth and Elemental Homogeneity of the Multicomponent Rare-Earth Garnet (Lu 1/6 Y 1/6 Ho 1/6 Dy 1/6 Tb 1/6 Gd 1/6 ) 3 Al 5 O 12

We report high-entropy aluminum garnets were grown as bulk single crystals using the micro-pulling-down method, taking the synthesis of complex ceramics a step further from the conventional preparation of polycrystalline materials. We studied the effects of growth parameters on the elemental distribution in high optical quality crystals of (Lu 1/6 Y 1/6 Ho 1/6 Dy 1/6 Tb 1/6 Gd 1/6 ) 3 Al 5 O 12 containing six cations (yttrium and rare-earths) taken in equimolar amounts. A single garnet structure was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction. Electron microprobe measurements were obtained to correlate the radial distribution of rare-earth elements with pulling rates and molten zone height. The nature of the elemental distribution in the radial direction was associated with ionic radius: smaller rare-earths concentrated in the center of the crystal, while larger rare-earths segregated toward the outer edge of the cylindrical crystal. Faster pulling rates led to a flattening of the concentration profiles toward the nominal concentration, promoting a more homogeneous radial elemental distribution, while varying the molten zone height did not have a significant effect. The demonstrated success with crystal growth enables the practical availability of single crystals of multicomponent aluminum garnets for further discovery of new phenomena and applications.

Lead-lead oxide-carbon nanocomposite for energy storage cells and method of preparation

Lead/lead oxide/carbon (“Pb—O—C”) nanocomposite materials are useful as electrode active materials for electrodes in lithium and sodium batteries. A Pb—O—C nanocomposite as described herein comprises Pb and lead oxide nanoparticles homogeneously dispersed in a carbon nanoparticle matrix. In the nanocomposite, the other element or elements (e.g., transition metals, Al, Si, P, Sn, Sb, and Bi) can be alloyed with the Pb nanoparticles, incorporated as a mixed oxide with the lead oxide nanoparticles, or can be present as distinct elemental or oxide nanoparticles within the carbon nanoparticle matrix. In some embodiments, the additional element or elements are present as alloys and mixed oxides with the Pb materials and as distinct elemental and/or oxide nanoparticles. In a preferred embodiment the Pb nanoparticles surface is oxidized to lead oxide thus creating a shell on core nanostructure.

Efficiency analysis of helium-cooled MAS DNP: case studies of surface-modified nanoparticles and homogeneous small-molecule solutions

Despite the growing number of successful applications of dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP)-enhanced magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR in structural biology and materials science, the nuclear polarizations achieved by current MAS DNP instrumentation are still considerably lower than the theoretical maximum. Here, the method could be significantly strengthened if experiments were performed at temperatures much lower than those currently widely used (~100 K). Recently, the prospects of helium (He)-cooled MAS DNP have been increased with the instrumental developments in MAS technology that uses cold helium gas for sample cooling. Despite the additional gains in sensitivity that have been observed with He-cooled MAS DNP, the performance of the technique has not been evaluated in the case of surfaces and interfaces that benefit the most from DNP. Herein, we studied the efficiency of DNP at temperatures between ~30 K and ~100 K for organically functionalized silica material and a homogeneous solution of small organic molecules at a magnetic field B 0 = 16.4 T. We recorded the changes in signal enhancement, paramagnet-induced quenching and depolarization effects, DNP build-up rate, and Boltzmann polarization. For these samples, the increases in MAS-induced depolarization and DNP build-up times at around 30 K were not as severe as anticipated. In the case of the surface species, we determined that MAS DNP at 30 K provided ~10 times higher sensitivity than MAS DNP at 90 K, which corresponds to the acceleration of experiments by multiplicative factors of up to 100.

Decoupling the effects of texture and composition on magnetic properties of Fe-Si sheet processed by shear deformation

Soft magnetic Fe-Si alloys (electrical steels) possess exceptional functional properties such as high permeability, low coercivity, and low core loss, which generally improve with increasing Si content in the alloy. However, Fe-Si alloys containing > 3.5 wt% Si are also characterized by prohibitively low workability and poor ductility that have prevented their efficient commercial production in sheet form by rolling. This has limited their use for improving efficiency of motors and transformers. In this study, hybrid cutting-extrusion (HCE) is used as a single-step thermomechanical processing method to produce continuous Fe-Si alloy sheet with high Si compositions of 4 wt% to 6.5 wt%. HCE sheet is shown to have a homogeneous annealed grain structure and simple-shear crystallographic textures. By controlling the HCE deformation path, varied crystallographic shear textures are created in the sheet. Quasi-static magnetic properties of the HCE sheet are evaluated to decouple the effects of sheet texture and Si composition on resultant permeability and coercivity properties. The results suggest that HCE, with suitable process scaling, is a viable route for production of high-Si content electrical steel sheet for next-generation motors and transformers.

Facilitated transport membranes for H 2 purification from coal-derived syngas: A techno-economic analysis

A single-stage membrane process has been designed for using facilitated transport membranes (FTMs) to decarbonize the coal-derived syngas from an integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plant. The necessary process model and costing method have also been developed to assess the technical feasibility and process economics. In order to account for the carrier saturation phenomenon associated with FTMs, a homogeneous reactive diffusion model is integrated into the process model. The techno-economic study reveals that the mitigated carrier saturation upon bulk CO 2 removal can lead to appreciable increases in the CO 2 permeance and CO 2 /H 2 selectivity, which can be utilized to achieve 95% CO 2 purity and 95% H 2 recovery with a CO 2 /H 2 selectivity of 50 at the complete carrier saturation. FTMs with different facilitated transport characteristics can also be arranged in a hybrid membrane configuration to render a H 2 recovery of 99% and a cost of electricity of $\$118.5$ /MWh, which is 12.5% lower than that of the benchmark Selexol process.

First-principles study of L -shell iron and chromium opacity at stellar interior temperatures

Recently developed free-energy density functional theory (DFT)-based methodology for optical property calculations of warm dense matter has been applied for studying L-shell opacity of iron and chromium at T = 182 eV. We use Mermin–Kohn–Sham density functional theory with a ground-state and a fully temperature-dependent generalized gradient approximation exchange-correlation (XC) functionals. It is demonstrated that the role of XC at such a high-T is negligible due to the total free-energy of interacting system being dominated by the noninteracting free-energy term in agreement with estimations for the homogeneous electron gas. Furthermore, our DFT predictions are compared to the radiative emissivity and opacity of dense plasmas model, to the real-space Greens function method, and to experimental measurements. Good agreement is found between all three theoretical methods, and in the bound–continuum region for Cr when compared to the experiment, while the discrepancy between direct DFT calculations and the experiment for Fe remains essentially the same as for plasma-physics models.

Solvent effects on the heterogeneous growth of TiO 2 nanostructure arrays by solvothermal synthesis

One-dimensional titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanostructure arrays (nanoarrays) are important metal oxide nanomaterials that can be synthesized via facile solvothermal methods. The properties of the organic solvents can impose significant effects on the microstructures and properties of the final products. However, the discussions were limited to the homogeneously nucleated TiO 2 nanomaterials in free-standing powder form, while the solvent effects are less understood during the heterogeneous growth of TiO 2 nanoarrays on a substrate surface. In this work, six organic compounds, namely 2-butanone, n-decane, n-hexane, toluene, ethylene glycol and ethanol, were selected as the solvents for the solvothermal synthesis of TiO 2 nanoarrays on the cordierite monolithic substrates. Special attentions are paid to the morphology, crystallinity, specific surface area, and porosity of the samples. The heterogeneous growth of TiO 2 nanoarrays on substrate surfaces is found to favor the solvents with moderate dielectric constants, which can be partially dissolved in the aqueous solution and modulate the reaction rate during the solvothermal synthesis. Organic solvents with low dielectric constants may result in a complete separation between the precursors and aqueous solution, and therefore slow down the overall reaction, causing the insufficient growth of the nanoarrays. The TiO 2 nanoarrays are obtained with optimum morphology from the combination of 2-butanone and titanium (IV) butoxide as solvent and precusor, respectively, with a high specific surface area up to 56 m 2 /g including cordierite substrate given a micron thickness. When loaded with Pt catalyst, the TiO 2 nanoarray-based monolithic catalysts show excellent low-temperature catalytic activity and hydrothermal stability for the CO and hydrocarbon oxidation under the simulated exhausted conditions. This article shall shed light on a better understanding of the growth mechanism and rational design of TiO 2 nanoarrays for high-performance catalytic converters.

In Situ and Operando Morphology Study of Germanium-Selenium Alloy Anode for Li-ion Batteries

Selenium-doped germanium (GeSe) micrometersized particles have been reported with good cycling performance and rate capability due to a Li-Se-Ge network formed during the first lithiation that provides a Li-ion fast pathway. To understand the effect of the Li-Se-Ge network at a high cycling rate, we monitored the morphology change of both pure Ge and GeSe particles during cycling with an in situ/operando focused-ion beam-scanning electron microscope method. Our results showed that the proposed inactive Li-Se-Ge network can provide fast Li-ion transport and also buffer volume variation, resulting in homogeneous volume change and uniform microstructural evolution.

Magnetic field induced phase transitions of the triangular spin model

In this work, motivated by a recent inelastic neutron scattering experiment on YbMgGaO 4 , I study the homogeneous spin model on the triangular lattice using the cluster mean-field theory and exact diagonalization. Phase diagrams with and without magnetic field are computed. The results show that the magnetic field can induce the phase transition from the spin liquid state (or the stripe state) to the 120 ° antiferromagnetic state. These phase transitions are suppressed by the next-nearest-neighbor exchange interaction J 2 / J 1 and vanish as J 2 / J 1 > 0.11 . I analyze a parameter space at J 2 / J 1 = 0.1 , where a field induced phase transition can occur, and find that the deviation of the theoretical spin excitation energy from the experimental data is only about 0.054. These results imply that an effective homogeneous spin model still applies to YbMgGaO 4 .

On the Use of Field RR Lyrae As Galactic Probes: IV. New Insights Into and Around the Oosterhoff Dichotomy

We discuss the largest and most homogeneous spectroscopic data set of field RR Lyrae variables (RRLs) available to date. We estimated abundances using both high-resolution and low-resolution ($Δ$S method) spectra for fundamental (RRab) and first overtone (RRc) RRLs. The iron abundances for 7941 RRLs were supplemented with similar estimates that are available in the literature, ending up with 9015 RRLs (6150 RRab, 2865 RRc). The metallicity distribution shows a mean value of $\langle$[Fe/H]$\rangle$ = -1.51 ± 0.01, and $σ$(standard deviation) = 0.41 dex with a long metal-poor tail approaching [Fe/H] ≃ - 3 and a sharp metal-rich tail approaching solar iron abundance. The RRab variables are more metal-rich ( $\langle$[Fe/H]$\rangle$ ab = -1.48 ± 0.01, $σ$ = 0.41 dex) than RRc variables ($\langle$[Fe/H]$\rangle$ c = -1.58 ± 0.01, $σ$ = 0.40 dex). The relative fraction of RRab variables in the Bailey diagram (visual amplitude versus period) located along the short-period (more metal-rich) and the long-period (more metalpoor) sequences are 80% and 20%, while RRc variables display an opposite trend, namely 30% and 70%, respectively. We found that the pulsation period of both RRab and RRc variables steadily decreases when moving from the metal-poor to the metal-rich regime. Furthermore, the visual amplitude shows the same trend, but RRc amplitudes are almost two times more sensitive than RRab amplitudes to metallicity. We also investigated the dependence of the population ratio (N $c$ /N tot ) of field RRLs on the metallicity and we found that the distribution is more complex than in globular clusters. The population ratio steadily increases from ~0.25 to ~0.36 in the metal-poor regime, it decreases from ~0.36 to ~0.18 for -1.8 ≤ [Fe/H] ≤ -0.9 and it increases to a value of ~0.3 approaching solar iron abundance.

Advancing Sodium-Ion Battery Cathodes: A Low-Cost, Eco-Friendly Mechanofusion Route from TiO 2 Coating to Ti 4+ Doping

Layered oxide battery cathodes often require extra stabilization strategies, such as surface coating or doping, to mitigate side reactions and enhance longevity. Conventional methods such as aqueous deposition and atomic layer deposition are costly and environmentally unfriendly and even damage the original structure, especially for air-sensitive sodium-ion battery (SIB) cathodes. Herein, we introduce an all-dry mechanofusion technique that modifies hydroxide precursors with TiO 2 coating before sintering with a sodium source. Using advanced characterizations including X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance for structural insights, X-ray absorption spectroscopy to study metal valence states, and transmission X-ray microscopy for nanoscale visualization of nickel oxidation states, we verified that postsintering transforms TiO 2 surface coating into Ti doping, leading to improved Ni-oxidation homogeneity, modified charge compensation, and enhanced thermal stability. Electrochemical tests reveal superior performance in capacity retention, rate capability, and air stability for these modified cathodes, with pouch cells maintaining over 85% capacity after 650 cycles. This method presents a sustainable, cost-effective route for advanced SIB cathode development.

Design of a multi-functional gel polymer electrolyte with a 3D compact stacked polymer micro-sphere matrix for high-performance lithium metal batteries

We report lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are considered as promising high energy density batteries. However, they still suffer from poor cyclability due to the instability of solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs) and Li dendrite issues. Herein, a novel 3D densely packed multifunctional crosslinked gel polymer electrolyte (PHGPE) has been synthesized by in situ copolymerization of pentaerythritol tetraacrylate and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate in a liquid electrolyte via a thermal initiation method. Due to intermolecular hydrogen bonding in the frameworks, the PHGPE exhibits a 3D compact-stacked and crosslinked micro-sphere structure, which benefits the construction of homogeneous Li + flux, enabling uniform Li plating/stripping and formation of robust SEIs onto the lithium electrode. Benefiting from the above advantages, symmetric Li cells in the PHGPE deliver excellent cyclabilities of 6000 h at a current density of 1 mA cm -2 (1 mA h cm -2 ) and 7700 h at 0.5 mA cm -2 (2 mA h cm -2 ). Moreover, the PHGPE has such a wide electrochemical window that it is compatible with both high-voltage LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 and sulfur cathodes to realize long cycle life. Additionally, a LiFePO 4 based pouch size LMB also presents promising performance. Therefore, this study of the PHGPE has opened a new avenue for high-performance LMBs with excellent versatility and practicality.

Understanding the Behavioral Aspects of Rate Design

Consumer demand for electricity has often been thought of as homogenous and inelastic. However, consumers may have preferences for their electricity consumption that they have been unable to realize due to the structures of electricity rates, and historic methods of regulation. As ratemaking becomes more dynamic, consumers will have a newfound ability to realize these preferences. This paper conducts a review of this issue through the lenses of utility regulation, neoclassical economics, and behavioral economics. It surveys what aspects of consumer preferences and behavior have been well established for the electricity sector and identifies gaps that could be filled by future research. This analysis has implications for stakeholders looking to understand how households will function in transactive and real time pricing environments.

Data augmentation and multimodal learning for predicting drug response in patient-derived xenografts from gene expressions and histology images

Patient-derived xenografts (PDXs) are an appealing platform for preclinical drug studies. A primary challenge in modeling drug response prediction (DRP) with PDXs and neural networks (NNs) is the limited number of drug response samples. We investigate multimodal neural network (MM-Net) and data augmentation for DRP in PDXs. The MM-Net learns to predict response using drug descriptors, gene expressions (GE), and histology whole-slide images (WSIs). We explore whether combining WSIs with GE improves predictions as compared with models that use GE alone. We propose two data augmentation methods which allow us training multimodal and unimodal NNs without changing architectures with a single larger dataset: 1) combine single-drug and drug-pair treatments by homogenizing drug representations, and 2) augment drug-pairs which doubles the sample size of all drug-pair samples. Unimodal NNs which use GE are compared to assess the contribution of data augmentation. The NN that uses the original and the augmented drug-pair treatments as well as single-drug treatments outperforms NNs that ignore either the augmented drug-pairs or the single-drug treatments. In assessing the multimodal learning based on the MCC metric, MM-Net outperforms all the baselines. Our results show that data augmentation and integration of histology images with GE can improve prediction performance of drug response in PDXs.
